after billionaire michael bloomberg today dropped out of the race for the democratic presidential nomination, we're keeping an eye on the top three candidates, joe biden, bernie sanders, and elizabeth warren. >> that's right. new results are in from california with 90% of precincts reporting showing how we voted in yesterday's primary. 34% for sanders right now. biden now 25% of the vote. >> well, some people in the bay area had to wait to cast their vote. long lines formed at a number of polling places. maybe you were in one. >> abc7 news anchor liz is in the newsroom. >> reporter: the secretary of state's office says it is way too early to know official statewide turnout. counties have until april 3rd to complete their vote count so it could really be weeks until we know the results. but we are able to get a sense of how things are going, the direction things are going. so here's a look at what we
6:17 pm
learned so far. results are in, in the california primary. and vermont senator bernie sanders is the clear winner, leading in nearly every county in the state. but former vice president joe biden isn't far behind. he's also expected to snatch up some delegates, assign the last-minute strategy to consolidate the moderate vote might have worked. >> bernie sanders was on the cusp of sweeping a ton of these delegates. those changes likely would not have happened if it weren't for california being a part of super tuesday. >> reporter: final results could still be weeks away. for instance, inside san francisco's department of elections, thousands of ballots are still being counted. >> we have about 125,000 more ballots to review and process. >> reporter: it's the same across california where same-day voting, vote by mail and provisional ballots all result in an ultra complicated counting process. >> they are challenging elections because of all the different types of ballot cards. >> reporter: not to mention these long lines. here in alameda county, people
6:18 pm
waited late until the night to cast their ballot. but what does that say about turnout? san francisco says their turnout might be slightly than four years ago. but alameda and santa clara county says it'll be on par. the state wide turnout will also be similar to 2016. >> our rough projection was about 10 million voters. that would put us a million and a half voters above what we saw in 2016. >> reporter: again those are just projected numbers. if the turnout ends up being low, it also could be for a variety of reasons. both parties didn't have contentious primaries driving people to the polls. and some of those voters could have stayed home. live in the news room, abc7 news. let's bring in "chronicle" insider phil to get his take. >> they are still out there, especially in california. they've got a lot of ballots still to count.
6:19 pm
it's interesting, i'm going to go through a couple of terms that we throw around on election night. how many times did we say last night with 100% of the precincts reporting? well, i called the secretary of state's office and said what's that mean? they said, well, actually, phil, let's say placer county has five votes and they call in and say we've counted one, that's one precinct reporting and we're sitting here thinking they are reporting their full. no. they are just saying we are reporting in that we're starting our count and this is what it is. so it's estimated that we've gone through about half of the ballots. and in california as we saw biden comes in second behind bernie sanders in terms of the actual percentage out there. and, again, another thing we say is that bernie sanders won california. but the fact is he's going to have to split up the delegates with joe biden. so he came in first in california. we still have to split up the delegates on that. and then they go to milwaukee to
6:20 pm
decide who will win. >> let me ask you about elizabeth warren. a lot of pressure within the party to drop out of the race. >> she said she would not, but -- >> there's pressure within her race to drop out of the race. it comes down to money, dan and ama. you've gone so far. you are not going to go to the next level, what are you doing still here? >> and the money starts drying up too. >> and the money starts drying up. and they say, okay, what is the path forward? for all of them the path forward is a state called michigan. that's march 10th. an the reason that's big for joe biden and for bernie sanders, it's make it or break it for bernie sanders because that's where he has to prove whether or not he can do the blue collar vote, the minority vote, the middle america vote. this is not the carolinas. this is not california. this is not texas. this is that heart bread basket of matters in november. so all of the candidates are going to be focusing on michigan to say i can do it or i can't.
6:21 pm
>> one might think that biden has an advantage. but not necessarily. >> he has been organizing out there. and funny ten days ago people were staying instinctively joe biden, joe who? how does he comfortably exit the race? the voters out there, despite the media, despite the hundreds of millions of dollars in television ads, they are making this decision their own, and they are waiting till the last minute to decide. they are not being told what to do. it's democracy in action. democracy is human, and human is people, and people is like the secretary of state that calls in and says, hey, we're still counting the ballots because this is a tight election, it's a big election, and everybody did what they were supposed to do, which was vote by mail. only they voted at the last minute. >> now we wait. thank you, phil. you can read phil's columns every wednesday and sunday. be sure to check it out. >> and we have full election results for each race and ballot measure right now on
