now at 5:00, concern about passengers on this cruise ship. the ship is heading back to san francisco right now with people who may have been exposed to coronavirus. what we know about it this morning. good morning to you on this thursday, march 5th >> we're tracking the latest on coronavirus in the bay area. first we want to check in with mike for a look at the forecast today. >> let's see what's going on with the winds. clearly coming ashore, there's fog stretching from novato across 37 to where it gets thicker in american canyon, vallejo and napa. visibility down to an eighth of a mile. that could spread just a little bit as we're seeing the marine layer take over today. that means no more record high temperatures. we're starting them around 50

this morning. the coast staying in the 50s. 64 to 68 which is comfortable at noon. 68 to 70, very comfortable at 4:00, just not record setting like the last three days. more on the chance of rain saturday. here's jobina. >> thank you, mike. we have a couple crashes to get to right now that are coming into the studio. the first is in castro valley, this is westbound 580 at redwood road. the right lane is shut down. injuries may have been reported. this is a single car spinout in the area. moving over to oakland, southbound 880 before 98th avenue. a single car spinout that hit the center divide. rej sqggie and kumasi? investigators are working to figure out what sparked this fire in santa rosa. crews were called to the fire near frazier avenue and lotus court before 2:00 this morning. we're told the fire was contained to this one commercial building.

the death toll from the coronavirus is climbing in the u.s. it has now killed 11 americans. most of them in the seattle area. the latest death was reported in california. a 71-year-old man with underlying health conditions got sick last month after taking a cruise from san francisco to mexico. he died yesterday a day after testing positive by a state lab. there's more than 150 cases of coronavirus in the u.s., at least 33 in california. today the coast guard will fly in coronavirus testing kits to this cruise ship. it's the same one that the man from placer don't was on a fcou weeks ago. this ship traveled from san francisco to hawaii, and it was headed for mexico today. but it has been ordered to reroute to san francisco. amy hollyfield is live along the embarcadero with more on this.

>> we talked to a woman who was on board this ship at the time of the man who has now died. heidi walters says she was shocked to learn of the 71-year-old man's death. she has been in self-quarantine in her napa home since monday after hearing that three passengerers on board that ship with her have tested positive for the coronavirus. now one of those three has died. >> we're part of the target population that this virus seems to attack viciously. >> she said the ship did take necessary precautions to keep passengers safe. she said she was on the first leg that sailed from san francisco to mexico. three from that leg tested positive. now on the second leg we're

hearing 22 people on board are showing symptoms. so the cdc wants passengers to be tested before deciding where to send that ship. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thanks for the update. doctors in the east bay are preparing to treat coronavirus patients. local hospitals like john muir medical center are gearing up for an influx of possible coronavirus patients who may have to be completely separate from others. one significant feature is the sealed anti-room, a buffer between the hospital hallway where caregivers wear personal protective gear. there's also a special ventilation system to keep air from circulating to the rest of the hospital. >> we have to be prepared to see an influx of possibly sick patients that have this virus. along with the usual resources that those patients would take, we need to also ensure we have enough protective equipment for our staff and isolation rooms to

keep the patient or staff safe. >> there are about a dozen isolation rooms at the walnut creek hospital. the quarantine period is two weeks, but not everyone can be away from work that long. >> california's sick leave policy requires just three days of paid sick leave. m.i.t. says most u.s. workplaces are not ready to contain an outbreak. while many employers have been urging sick employees to stay home, it's easier said than done. eric johnson works in the service industry. >> in my profession, it would not be feasible. i would show up to work sick unfortunately. >> human resource experts say it's important for companies to take steps to protect their work force. the senate is expected to vote today on an emergency funding bill to fight virus. the 8$8.3 billion would be used to speed up development of vaccines and new medicines to pay for containment operations and improve preparedness.

ghost tax preparers. that's when an uncertified person doesn't sign a tax return, instead they'll print the return and tell you, the taxpayer, to sign it and mail it to the irs. that's a huge red flag. the irs says the paid preparer may be looking to make a fast buck by promising a big refund or charging fees based on the size of your refund. officials say make sure your tax preparer has a valid preparer tax i.d. number and make sure they sign the return and get a receipt. ikea is recalling more than 800,000 chests because they can tip over. the recall covers the chests which are unstable if not properly anchored to the wall. anyone who has the chests should contact ikea for a refund or a free wall attachment kit. the chronicle reports that

are on their way to a cruise ship bound for san francisco to figure out if passengers are infected with coronavirus. it comes after a man died from the virus in placer county. amy hollyfield has more with how the city and state are responding. >> reporter: officials are discussing the fate of that ship out at sea but are also busy on land tracing the virus and its path from that ship. the 71-year-old man who died in california from the coronavirus had been on board thisship between february 11th and february 21st. governor newsom says health officials are tracing people who had contact with him. the governor says they are also focusing on figuring out whether other passengers who are still on board have the virus. >> we are going to be flying testing kits to the cruise ship. we will be sending those quickly

encouraging sick students and staff to stay home. there's been two confirmed cases of coronavirus in alameda county. on the peninsula, a school in atherton is closed after a staff member had contact with a relative infected with coronavirus. classes have been canceled through the weekend. julian glover is live with the impact this might have. good morning. >> good morning. a menlo girl's playoff game that was set to happen later today against bishop too be postponed as health officials work to determine if that game should be played. the "san francisco chronicle" reporting that this morning. all classes and activities have been canceled at the school through the weekend. the private prep school said in a statement it made the decision to cancel class out of an abundance of caution after one of its staff members came in contact with a relative who tested positive for coronavirus on tuesday. the school has 795 students in

grades 6th through 12th. parents were notified of the closure and told "the school is working closely with the san mateo county department of health and cdc." the statement also says we engaged a cleaning service and will use the time to deep clean the entire campus. now again this morning, the staff member that came in contact with a family member who has tested positive for the virus has not tested positive for the virus themselves. the school just saying they want to play it safe out of an abundance of caution, doing everything they can to protect their students. they promise to release more information to parents as soon as they get it. reporting live in atherton, julian glover, abc7 news. >> thank you. santa clara county has three new cases of coronavirus that's bringing the total now to 14. two patients were in close contact with an infected person and they're isolated at home. the third new patient is in the hospital. right now it's not clear how this person got the virus. in the south bay, good samaritan hospital set up tents in

preparation to treat a possible overflow of patients with coronavirus. the tents have been used in the past for patients for flu outbreaks. hospitals across the globe are taking the same treatment approach. san mateo county wants people to be informed about the coronavirus. it's opening a public call center to answer non-medical questions like how to prepare and prevent the spread of the virus. the county says the call center will be up and running by noon today. the number is on your screen. 650-363-4422. the call center will be open on weekdays between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. in washington, the senate could vote today on a measure to spend $8 billion to fight the virus. it's already passed in the house. east bay congresswoman barbara lee says democrats and republicans are working together on this. >> make no mistake, we are working very hard to ensure the government has what is needed to combat this deadly virus and to keep our families and communities safe. >> lee says the bill would fund

treatment and development of a vaccine and provide loans to small businesses impacted by the virus. it's been three weeks since a south bay mom and her daughter got back from federal quarantine. we first introduced you to esther last month after she and her daughter were evacuated from wuhan, china. she is a medical acupuncturist and noticed several clients canceled once she finally got back to work. she is assuming that people were trying to keep their distance. >> it was understandable but it was not necessary, i was cleared from cdc quarantine. >> she self-quarantined much longer than that to keep the concern down in the community. eventually her business picked up but so did panic over potential spread. now phone calls to her office are slowing again to a trickle. we are posting all of our stories about coronavirus in one

and tuesday. for the second time, thieves have targeted a little league in the east bay, this time they stole their pitching machine. the newark little league is set to start the season this saturday without its new two wheeled electronic pitching machine. the theft happened at the sports complex sometime between 6:00 tuesday night and yesterday morning. the league's president says last year somebody stole a quad vehicle used to maintain the field. >> all of us give our time, blood, sweat, and tears out there. and for someone to steal from these children, that something don't have nothing. so something we take in and give them everything for free. >> he says the league will now get security cameras. the league hopes donors will help them raise the money to get a new pitching machine. oakland is opening up a new keva hub to support female entrepreneurs. $4 million has been lent to over 800 people in oakland. 70% of which were women.
