most of them in the seattle area. the latest death was reported in california. a 71-year-old man with underlying health conditions got sick last month after taking a cruise from san francisco to mexico. he died yesterday in placer county, a day after testing positive by a state lab. there's more than 150 cases of coronavirus in the u.s., at least 33 in california. today the coast guard will fly in coronavirus testing kits to this cruise ship. a person on a previous sailing on this ship was diagnosed and then died from the virus. this ship traveled from san francisco to hawaii, and it was headed for mexico today. princess cruise ordered that it be rerouted to san francisco. amy hollyfield is at pier 27 with how passengers are reacting. >> yeah. that ship was supposed to pull

in to this port today, not anymore. now they want to test the passengers on board the grand princess ship before deciding where to send them. we talked to a woman on the ship with the man who died. heidi waters says she was shocked to learn of the 71-year-old man's death, the first in california. now she's thinking about all the people on board with him and all the places they have been since. >> these people caught ubers, we had baggage handlers, bars, restaurants, grocery stores, people go to the salon, dentist without having concern. there should be a great deal of concern at this point. >> reporter: heidi has been in self-quarantine in her napa home since monday after hearing three passengers on board that ship with her have tested positive

care center nursing home, six people have died from covid-19, residents and families are scared and angry. >> the greatest country in the world, to slowly watch infirm elderly people be picked off by a deadly disease, it's unacceptable. >> reporter: vice president trying to reassure americans. >> if you're a healthy american, the risk of contracting the coronavirus remains low. >> reporter: congress has approved an 8$8.3 billion emergency funding bill to fight the outbreak. the senate is expected to vote on that bill and approve it later today. ines de la cuetara, abc news, washington. new at 6:00, scientists in china are reporting a second strain of coronavirus has emerged. dr. jennifer ashton explains what that means. >> so it was a very small report coming out of china identified two strains of this coronavirus. i want to you think of this just as we know there are multiple

strains of the influenza virus. it does not mean that there's been any mutation or change. it just means one is circulating more commonly than the other. one appears to be more highly transmissible but doesn't mean more severe. doctors in the east bay are preparing to treat coronavirus patients. >> hospitals like john muir medical center set up about a dozen airborne isolation rooms to keep patients totally separate from other people. doctors put on protective gear in the hallway, then they go into a patient's room will you a sealed area. there's a special ventilation system to keep the air circulating from the rest of the hospital. the quarantine period is two weeks, but not everybody can be away from work that long. >> california's sick leave policy requires just three days

so you can see him wrestling the suspect to the ground. the driver led officers on a short police chase before a tire deflation device stopped the suv. the good samaritan slapped hands with the officer before leaving with his dog. police are trying to find the dog walker to say thank you and commend him on this takedown. it is your voice your vote. battle lines are being drawn between former vice president joe biden and senator bernie sanders for the democratic presidential nomination. today sanders will hold a rally in phoenix, arizona reflecting on super tuesday results he explained his struggle with getting african-american voters to back him. >> it's not that i'm not popular. biden is running with his -- with 'tis this ties to obama, t working well. >> biden supporters are accusing the sanders campaign of trying to rewrite history. in an ad it shows former president obama praising sanders

in the past. sanders has been known to criticize the political establishment. more companies are skipping this year's south by southwest conference because of coronavirus concerns. amazon is the latest company to cancel plans to attend. multiple reports say apple, netflix, twitter and facebook are some of the other companies that have already backed out. south by southwest is an annual culture and tech festival held in austin. as of yesterday, organizers said the conference will still go on as planned. new at 6:00, what would you do if you came face-to-face with a shark? one diver decided to make this lemon shark his friend. james annern ener petting the shark and the shark just stays there. this is off of tiger beach in the bahamas. he is from florida, he said he has been traveling to tiger beach since 1998 for

high temperatures today, 74 in san francisco yesterday. 61 today. 56 at half moon bay. a lot of mid to upper 60s around the bayshore. temperatures still at least away from san francisco and half moon bay a little bit warmer than average. tonight, you can see the cloud cover getting more extensive a chance of drizzle along the coast and the east bay hills, mid 40s to low 50s. it's back. we pulled it out. i cleaned it up earlier this morning. got the dust off it. today is day 37 without rain. tomorrow is 38. saturday is stops with drizzle. the light rain coming in on a storm impact scale of just a 1. that's all we can manage but it's something. future radar, friday into saturday morning, there's a good chance of steady rain for a couple hours. starting off as drizzle. becoming more moderate rain and tapering as we head into the afternoon and evening hours. i'll show you the rain to expect coming up next. here's my seven-day forecast.

6:24 on a thursday. already looking ahead to saturday. you can see the chance of rain. it's still there. that means we will end our streak tomorrow at 38 consecutive dry days. the rainfall amounts are not impressive coming in from a couple hundredths of an inch to a quarter inch, but it does stop the streak, there's a chance of rain monday and tuesday also where we could double these totals. things are getting better as far as the drought goes. happening today, an idaho mom is expected to be extradited from hawaii to face charges in the disappearance of her son and daughter.

toll plaza, from the toll plaza to san francisco, that's after you make it through this backup, about a 14-minute ride for you all. walnut creek, hello, everyone on 680, definitely looking at those brake lights for people making their way south right now. no major problems. drive times across the board, slow, tracy to dublin, 59-minute ride. dublin to mission boulevard, 25 minutes. highway 101 to cupertino, 23-minute ride. >> thank you. we have developing news on the coronavirus. the number of cases worldwide has climbed past 95,000. >> in the bay area officils are preparing for a cruise ship with thousands of people who may have been exposed to the virus. here's a look at where the ship is now. off the coast of california. it traveled from san francisco to hawaii. it was supposed to stop in mexico, but that leg of the trip was called off. we have live team coverage starting with amy hollyfield, she's live at pier 27 in san francisco.

>> reporter: good morning. officials are not only discussing the fate of that ship out at sea but also busy here on land tracing the path of that virus, that 71-year-old man who died here in california had been on board that ship. this is california's first death from the coronavirus. he was on board that ship from february 11th through the 21st. governor newsom says health officials are tracing people who had contact with him. the governor says they are also focusing on figuring out whether other passengers who are still on board have the virus. >> we are going to be flying testing kits to the cruise ship. and we are going to be sending those quickly back to the state, primarily to richmond lab where we'll be able to test very quickly, within a few hours, those samples. >> the ship is carrying about 2

stshg 2,500 passengers. 11 passengers and 10 crew members have developed symptoms. the governor declared a state of emergency. he said they'll be looking at those test results before dec e deciding what to do with this ship. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. an east bay school is taking no chance when it comes to coronavirus. aspire monarch academy in oakland will be closed for the rest of the week after a staff member may have been exposed to the virus. oakland unified school district released a statement saying the closure will give them time to assess the risk presented by that staff member. monarch academy is not the only school closed because of the virus. >> on the peninsula, a school in atherton is closed after a staff member had contact with a relative infected with

coronavirus. school activities have been canceled through the weekend. julian glover is live with the impact this might have. >> it could have a big impact. good morning. we're learning a menlo school girl's playoff basketball game set to happen later today could be postponed now. we're hearing school officials are considering whether or not the game should be played or pushed back until friday. again, all classes, all after-school activities and all practices are canceled at menlo school in atherton. the private prep school said in a statement sent out to the school community that they made the decision to cancel class out of an abundance of caution after one of its staff members came in contact with a relative who tested positive for coronavirus on tuesday. the school has 795 students in grades 6th through 12th. in that statement sent to the school community, parents were notified of the closure and told that the school is working

closely with the san mateo county department of health and the cdc. the statement going on to say we have also engaged a cleaning service and will use the time to deep clean the entire campus. we want to stress the staff member in question has not tested positive for coronavirus. the school is playing it safe because that staff member came in contact with a family member who has, in fact, tested positive for coronavirus. they're also planning to give the rest of the school community, parents and students, more information about this as they get more information. reporting live in atherton, julian glover, abc7 news. >> thank you. san mateo county wants people to be informed about coronavirus, so it's opening a public call center to answer non-medical questions. questions like how to prepare and prevent the spread of the virus. the county says the call center will be up and running by noon today. the number is on your screen.

mid 60s around 70 except for the coast, mid 50s. 1 to 9 inches of snow on saturday. another couple ichbls of snow on sunday. it's going to be a snowy time in tahoe. you should be seeing tahoe now. it will start saturday, it will keep snowing through wednesday next week. some airlines are taking extra steps to clean planes after coronavirus outbreak. this is video provided by alaska airlines, it's showing cleaning crews wiping down armrests, seat belts, tray tables. the airline says wiping those areas is regular protocol and the crew is also cleaning the handle for carry-on baggage come fort compartments, windows and everything else. delta is fogging some lights with an epa registered disinfectant. southwest says it is thoroughly

cleaning planes overnight. more on the coronavirus and the action congress is taking to stop the spread. the senate could vote today on a measure to spend $8 billion to fight the virus. barbara lee says democrats and republicans are working together. >> make no mistake, we are working very hard to ensure the government has what is needed to combat this deadly virus and to keep our families and communities safe. >> lee says the bill would fund treatment and development of a vaccine and provide loans to small businesses impacted by the virus. santa clara county has three new cases of coronavirus bringing the total to 14 now. two patients were in close contact with an infected person, they are being isolated at home. the third new patient is in the hospital and it's not clear how he got the virus. in the south bay, good samaritan hospital set up tents to prepare and treat an overflow of patients with coronavirus. the tents have been used in the past for flu patients during large outbreaks.

hospitals across the globe are taking the same treatment approach. it's been three weeks since a south bay mom and her daughter got back from federal quarantine. esther and her daughter last month were evac wade ecuated fr, china. she is a medical acupuncturist and noticed several clients canceled once she finally got back to work. she is assuming that people were trying to keep their distance. >> it was understandable but it was not necessary, i was cleared from cdc quarantine for two weeks from the government. >> she self-quarantined much longer than that to keep the concern down in the community. eventually her business picked up but so did panic over potential spread. now phone calls to her office are slowing yet again. the market doesn't know what to do with coronavirus. yesterday we were way up, so much in the gains department. today we're losing half of those

today. mid to upper 60s around the bayshore, upper 60s to 70s inland. still outside of san francisco and the coast warmer than average. tonight, more widespread the clouds are. gray there. temperatures in the mid 40s to around 50, 51 degrees. we brought it out. we cleaned it up. polished it off. saturday, the storm impact scale comes back. drizzle and then light rain, up to a quarter inch possible. in the right hand part of the screen, midnight. starts raining. drizzle possible elsewhere. heading through the early morning hours, our best chance of rain and then it tapers for the afternoon hours. so now it looks like a couple hundredths of an inch in the north bay, that may be underdone. a tenth to a quarter inch of rain for the rest of us. so, there you go a 1 on the storm impact scale. also saturday will be our coolest day in the 50s. we will have daylight savings begin. set those clocks forward. we have not put a storm impact

scale on monday and tuesday, but we might as we get closer. we have some snow up in the sierra this weekend. how about getting there now? jobina? >> it's time for the toyota tahoe traffic report. i have good news. no chains required but there is more snow. i know a lot of people have been waiting for that. just to look at drive times here. all of these are coming from the station in san francisco up to the various resorts. squaw alpine, northstar and heavenly, just over 3 hours for all of those drive times. we have no chains. base levels increasing. for squaw alpine, 36 inches to 88 inches, really good there. heavenly, 30 inches to 61. moving over to our other resorts here, for sugar bowl and sierra at tahoe, almost 3 hours to get there. for kirkwood, 3 hours and 22 minutes. base levels for sugar bowl, 37 inches to 97 inches.
