>> the latest death comes from washington state where authorities in the seattle area have urged all 2 million residents to work from home if they can. >> meanwhile, there's growing frustration and outrage at the slow pace of testing for the virus. vice president mike pence now admits there will not be enough test kits to meet the expected demand. >> abc's ines de la cuetara begins our coverage. she's in washington. ines, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, trevor and zohreen. the coronavirus outbreak may be slowing down in some parts of the world, but here in the u.s. there are now 162 confirmed cases across 18 states. as the coronavirus continues to spread around the country, the coast guard dropping off testing kits to the "grand princess" cruise ship to test passengers and crew potentially infected with the new virus after a man died from being exposed during a cruise on the same ship last month. some passengers showing symptoms, the ship being held off the coast of san francisco.

>> if we've been exposed, we've been exposed and there's not much we can do about it. >> reporter: in new york mayor bill de blasio telling residents who recently traveled to china, italy, iran and japan to self-quarantine. the city's department of health is monitoring close to 3,000 new yorkers for home isolation. in washington state, seattle area district schools closing for 22,000 students in an effort to slow the outbreak. federal investigators now asking questions at the nursing home where nearly a dozen people died from the virus. residents' families speaking out. >> somebody needs to come and take control of this site. >> reporter: vice president pence touching down in that state giving washington's governor an elbow bump and pledging the federal government's full support but admitting -- >> we don't have enough tests today to meet what we anticipate will be the demand going forward. >> reporter: president trump defending his administration's

response during a fox news town hall and with the dow plunging over 900 points admitting the virus could have an impact on the economy. >> it certainly might have an impact. at the same time i have to say people are now staying in the united states spending their money in the u.s., and i like that. >> reporter: and congress has approved more than $8 billion to fight the virus. the president is expected to sign that bill later today. trevor and zohreen. >> ines, thank you. and in response to this virus, more companies and schools are banning large gatherings. johns hopkins university is now banning fans from attending certain basketball games this weekend. meanwhile, from washington to new york, more schools are closing altogether, and worldwide nearly 300 million students are being forced to stay home. and as people take precautions ebay is now banning new listings for face mask, hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes amid pressure from regulators to enforce price gouging laws. in australia one man got into a fight over toilet paper.

police say they had to use a taser to arrest him. our coverage of the virus emergency continues. coming up in just a few moments the concern about asking people to self-quarantine. we'll ask the experts will it work.versiaution overnight in alabama. >> a convicted cop killer stopped eating his final meal after he thought his life would be spared. but then a reversal by the supreme court allowed his execution to move forward. overnight alabama's executioner putting nathaniel woods to death capping an end to a whirlwind final days for the convicted cop killer and his supporters. a jury found woods guilty in the 2004 killing of three birmingham police officers. and although prosecutors said woods was not the gunman and woods convicted accomplice said he alone killed the officers woods was found guilty on capital murder charges. >> the fact that folks think he was not the shooter, that's an objection i found difficult.

>> reporter: after exhausting all options, woods said his final good-bye to his family thursday afternoon. but in the minutes leading up to his execution and just as he was eating his final meal, the supreme court issued a temporary stay putting a pause on the execution. his advocates celebrated including martin luther king iii who tweeted, amazing news, great work, everyone. but then a stunning reversal. the supreme court lifted the temporary stay allowing the state's executioner to move forward. in a statement this morning, woods' family says they'll continue fighting to clear woods' name saying he is an innocent man. the state's attorney general insists justice was served. >> tonight nathaniel woods, one of two cop killers in the bloodiest day in birmingham police department history has met his just fate. >> the daughter of one of the police officers also fought the execution. the supreme court did not explain its decision. well, now to the race for president.

bernie sanders and joe biden are sharpening their attks thr e trading jabs online about social security with sanders accusing biden of supporting cuts to the program. the former vice president says sanders should be attacking president trump, not him. the vermont senator also attacked biden during a rally in arizona last night on the issue of gay rights. >> when legislation came up some years ago determining whether our gay brothers and sisters could be open about their sexual orientation and serve in the military, i said yes. joe biden said no. >> well, sanders has now canceled a rally in mississippi so he can spend more time campaigning in michigan. voters go to the polls there next tuesday. in the meantime, elizabeth warren won't say if she'll endorse biden or sanders. warren says she needs time to think about who she'll support after dropping out of the race

and she offered this blunt response when asked about the role gender played in the campaign. >> gender in this race, you know that is the trap question for every woman. if you say, yeah, there was sexism in this race, everyone says, whiner, and if you say, no, there was no sexism, about a bazillion women think, what planet do you live on? i promise you this, i will have a lot more to say on that subject later on. >> a member of warren's team said she faced unfair double standards on the campaign trail calling it, quote, rage inducing and exhausting. and arm volunteers have descended on to tennessee helping residents dig out after this week's deadly tornadoes. 25 people were killed and hundreds of homes and businesses were destroyed. celebrities are among those pitching in to help including taylor swift who is donating $1 million. the cleanup could take months. well, time now for a look at your weather for this friday

morning. some serious flooding in charleston, south carolina. about four inches of rain has fallen in recent days. and that rain is finally moving offshore. meanwhile, around the northern great lakes, it's snow that is the problem. this was the scene in marquette, michigan, up to a foot of snow was expected in that region. looking at today's high temperatures, 40s in the northeast and upper midwest, more rain for the pacific northwest. 47 in seattle. 70s in southern california. and a balmy 84 in miami. well, coming up, the shocking arrest of a man here in the u.s. who used to work at a nazi concentration camp. also ahead, new questions about security at the jail where jeffrey epstein died by suicide. what investigators just found inside that facility. and later the infamous ice

well, sparks were flying during this police chase outside los angeles. deputies in palmdale were also dodging bullets while pursuing this dui suspect. the driver pulled over after his hood flipped up. he jumped out and ran across the freeway before finally deputies tackled him. new questions about security at the jail where sex offender jeffrey epstein died by suicide last year. investigators have reportedly found a loaded gun that was smuggled into new york metropolitan correctional center. according to the associated press, the discovery has triggered a new investigation of misconduct by guards at the jail. two workers on duty that night epstein died are facing indictment for allegedly falsifying records. the mother of two missing children from idaho has been

extradited from hawaii and will face a judge today. the fbi has released new images of lori vallow's children, tylee ryan and j.j. vallow, taken last september at yellowstone national park. agents are asking the public for any other images of the children. kay woodcock is the grandmother of 7-year-old j.j. she will also be in court today. she says she doesn't know how she'll feel about seeing lori again. >> we'll see when i see her. i don't know. i have no idea. i don't know if i'll feel anger or anything. >> reporter: kay woodcock and her husband filed for temporary custody of j.j. in january. j.j. was last seen in late september on a home security camera playing in a neighbor's yard. and a man who has been living in the u.s. since 1959 will be deported back to germany because of his nazi past. during an immigration trial in memphis, friedrich berger admitted that he served as a guard at this concentration camp in germany where nearly 43,000 people were killed.

his fate once he returns to germany remains unclear. well, a man who posted video of himself licking ice cream and then putting it back into a store freezer will sit in the cooler for a few weeks. here he is taking a taste at a walmart in texas. this guy has now been sentenced to 30 days in jail and he'll also pay a fine and serve probation and community service. and he has to pay nearly $1,600 to cover all the ice cream that the store had to throw out. >> how did he even come up with the idea of to do that? >> a heinous crime. coming up, an offer that even peyton manning cannot refuse or can he? also ahead, getting personal. former president clinton opens up about the monica lewinsky affair and why he did it. but first as the coronavirus spreads, more people are asking is it safe to travel? the advice from experts and what not to do coming up. in america we all count. no matter where we call home, how we worship, or who we love. and the 2020 census is how that great promise is kept.

fight the spread. >> but after one patient broke quarantine and possibly infected someone else, many are now asking whether self-isolation will work. this morning with the spread of the coronavirus expanding in the u.s., health officials are sounding this alarm. follow the guidelines if you're forced to self-isolate. >> self-quarantines only work if they abide by them. >> reporter: the warning comes after a hospital employee in new hampshire was diagnosed days after he was ordered to stay home. instead officials say he attended a party at dartmouth business school possibly infecting at least one other person. >> oftentimes it's voluntary or there's no real enforcement around them. and the cornerstone of public health epidemiology is containment, and right now until we have vaccines or anything like that, we have to isolate and quarantine. >> reporter: many companies including twitter and amazon have already asked some employees to isolate themselves during business hours and work

from home. but for many workers that's not possible. experts suggest those people modify their behaviors in the office. >> avoid some of the normal gestures where we shake hands with people. a fist bump, a nod, you know, just recognizing people in different ways. >> reporter: when traveling to work avoid touching railings and door handles. don't eat or drink on public transit, keep your bag off hard surfaces, and experts offer this hard to follow advice, avoid touching your phone on public transportation. if that's not possible, then wipe down the screen with an anti-bacterial wipe but not with vodka. ♪ tito's vodka is responding to people on social media who have been trying to make their own hand sanitizer with vodka. the company tweeting per the cdc hand sanitizer needs to contain at least 60% alcohol, tito's handmade vodka is 40% alcohol and therefore does not meet the current recommendation of the cdc.

southbound 101 between westbound 80 and the chavez street. now back to our top story, developing news on the coronavirus outbreak. this morning we're waiting for test resulting from some of the passengers on the grand princess ship. >> the ship is expected to dock in san francisco later today after the test results come back. here's where the ship is right now. the small dot we're going to show you on that map, it shows you where it is in the pacific okay, this is the latest on our story on abc7news.com. here's what we know. people on board are quarantined because some people were starting to show symptoms. in san francisco, health officials confirmed two cases yesterday. they are the first cases in the city. six new cases were reported in santa clara county. >> as we test more people, we're finding more cases.
