beginning to see traffic in the area. that should pick up later on. golden gate bridge, very empty and quiet. antioch to hercules, 26-minute ride. highway 4 to the maze, 12 minutes. highway 85 to the san jose airport, 7-minute ride. >> thank you. now to the latest on coronavirus outbreak this morning. all eyes are on the grand princess cruise ship that is off the coast of san francisco. >> the ship is preparing to dock sometime today. the people on board are awaiting test results from a lab in richmond. current grand princess cruise ship passengers have been under quarantine since it was discovered that previous passengers had coronavirus. santa clara announced six new cases yesterday, one of them involves a lockheed martin employee in sunnyvale. the company said they are aware of the possibility of exposure other employees and visitors safe. stanford university is proceeding with caution. the athletics department is working with the health and

safety department to establish guidelines during games where large crowds normally gather. the city of san francisco says it is working closely with the coast guard, cdc, the state to prepare for a possible increase in coronavirus hise at the grand ae today. >> it could. right now the bottom line is city officials don't know what will happen. they want to assure everyone that officials from different agencies are all working together on possible plans. and on cautionary steps. here's one example of that. we have video of tents that have been set up outside ucsf hospital. this would give them extra space for triage if there is a surge of patients. san francisco's mayor held a news conference yesterday with health officials to assure the city they are working on a plan. >> want to be clear with the people of san francisco that we're doing everything we can to

work with the state and the federal partners to prepare if it does come to san francisco. >> once they have results from the test that they conducted on passengers on that ship, the cdc and the state will decide where to send the grand princess. the grand princess is docked off the coast of san mateo county. they have to decide what to do with that ship and all of those passengers. they're hoping those test results will be available this morning and then we could possibly see that ship pull in here to pier 27. right now it's just anchored and waiting and the passengers have been quarantined to their rooms. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. san francisco is dealing with its first two cases of coronavirus. one is a man in his 90s with an underlying medical condition. the other is a woman in her 40s who is in fair condition. she is the parent of a high

school student. in response, san francisco un y unified is closing that school today and canceling activities. >> while it is not our intent to cause undue alarm or disruption to students learning, the district decided to act conservatively and in the best interest of our community members in announcing this closure. >> now, lowell is one of at least four bay area schools to close because of the virus. the others are menlo, monarch academy, and san jose's action day primary plus. a teacher at action day has tested positive for coronavirus. san mateo county's health spad the cmu that will likely happen for weeks perhaps month. >> he advises that all nonessential gatherings are canceled, postponed or done remotely. he said schools should stay open but once closings occur they may be extensive and extended.

he says san mateo county does not currently have testing available independently of the state and cdc. in the south bay, children's discovery museum is closed in san jose. an employee may have been exp e exposed to coronavirus. the museum will be closed and thoroughly cleaned over the next few days, it could reopen on tuesday. google is giving its bay area employees the option to work from home because of the spread of the virus. employees at the zuckerberg initiative in redwood city have been ordered to work from home after a contractor to the organization tested positive for the virus. the oakland diocese is giving pastors the option to decide addre concerns from pres pries and worshipers. governor newsom ordered all health shurninsurance companies waive costs from preventive

testing. there's growing concern and frustration over the lslow pace for testing for the virus. inez anez how ines de la ow in >> good morning. the coronavirus outbreak may be slowing down in some parts of the world, but here in the u.s. there are now 162 confirmed cases across 18 states. as the coronavirus continues to spread around the country, the coast guard dropping off testing kits to the "grand princess" cruise ship to test passengers. some passengers showing symptoms, the ship being held off the coast of san franisco. >> if we've been exposed, we've been exposed and there's not much we can do about it. >> reporter: in new york mayor bill de blasio telling residents who recently traveled to china, south korea, italy, iran and japan to self-quarantine. in washington state, seattle area drik scho area district schools closing for 22,000 students in an effort to slow the outbreak. federal investigators now asking

questions at the nursing home where nearly a dozen people died from the virus. vice president pence touching down in that state giving washington's governor an elbow bump and pledging the federal government's full support but admitting -- >> we don't have enough tests today to meet what we anticipate will be the demand going forward. >> reporter: president trump defending his administration's response during a fox news town hall and with the dow plunging over 900 points admitting the virus could have an impact on the economy. >> it certainly might have an impact. >> reporter: and congress has approved more than $8 billion to fight the outbreak. the president is expected to sign that bill later today. ines de la cuetara, abc news, washington. a northern california nurse who may have been infected after volunteering to treat a coronavirus patient has yet to be tested. the quarantined nurse met the criteria to be tested for covid-19 but the cdc wouldn't do it. they say she has to wait because priority is being given to severe cases. representatives from national nurses united read her

it is 5:13. here's 7 things to know today. number one, test results are expected this morning to dtermine if passengers on the grand princess cruise ship have the coronavirus. the ship is right now off the california coast awaiting clearance to come to san francisco. number two, in anticipation of a possible increase in coronavirus patients, ucsf put up these specialized medical tents. they could provide additional

areas for triage in an emergency surge situation. at least 12 people have died from coronavirus in the u.s. today president trump is expected to sign a bill setting aside $8 billion to fight the outbreak. number four, lowell high school in san francisco is one of four schools in the bay area closed because of coronavirus. menlo school in atherton, monarch academy in oakland and san jose's action day primary plus have also canceled classes. a four-letter word that begins with "r" is back in the forecast. rain tomorrow. it's a 1 on the storm impact scale. i'll let you know how much and when to expect it. we have some light traffic this friday morning. a live look now at the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see it is very clear and it is going to take you about 10 minutes to get from the toll plaza into san francisco. number seven, warriors star steph curry is back. last night curry played for the first time since breaking his left hand in october. you can see him play again tomorrow against the 76ers starting at 5:30 here on abc7.

>> happening today, the mother of the two missing idaho children is set to make her first court appearance. she was extradited back to idaho from hawaii to answer questions about where they are. lori vallow was arrested last month on felony charges of child abandonment in idaho. her children have not been seen in more than five months. police say she has lied about their whereabouts. the last sighting of tylee with her mother was september 8th at yellowstone national park. the fbi released these photos of the family from that day and is asking anyone with more images to send them to investigators. some people are getting coronavirus through what the experts are calling community spread, meaning patients didn't travel to places with confirmed cases and had no known contact with an infected person. how can you protect lf mcmiln fa

readg, rather when people from your county begin to test positive? >> we don't believe that this spreads far, okay? we're not going to quarantine an entire city unless i have evidence of lots of cases in one area. but it may be everybody in the same house. >> reporter: dr. cameron kaiser with riverside county public health says they're already reaching out to certain businesses where there is a lot of face-to-face contact. as an example, i asked him whether he or i would be at risk during this interview if one of us did have coronavirus. >> the general rule of thumb is about six feet. we're standing about four to five right now. you can still conduct a lot of business at six feet, but sometimes it's hard to control for that. and it is kind of off-putting and where we may have larger problems is the health care industry. you've got to be up close and personal with those people. anything that involves social interaction, entertainment, sports, things like that. i think the thing that goes the furthest, though, is recommend to whoever would patronize your business, be at your church, be

camera. traffic is beginning to slow. the chp is running a break at 66. a live look showing you 280 at san jose, clear traffic as >> developing news now on the coronavirus outbreak. this morning we're waiting for test resulting from some of the passengers on the grand princess ship. the ship is expected to dock in san francisco later today after the test results come back. here's where the ship is right now. that small dot in the pacific ocean, thousands of people are on board and they're quarantined because some people started to show symptoms. in san francisco, health officials confirmed two cases yesterday. they are the first cases in the city. six new cases were reported in santa clara county. >> as we test more people, we're finding more cases. we'll continue to find more cases. >> officials say without a doubt more people will be diagnosed with the virus. today the president is expected

to sign a bill that passed congress a lotting more than $8 billion to fight the outbreak. officials from the grand proefring so princess sent 45 test kits to richmond to be tested. amy hollyfield is live at the pier this morning with more on that. amy? >> those passengers must be so anxious waiting for these results, waiting to hear what will happen next. they've been quarantined to their room, so they have to stay in their rooms, but no decisions will be made until the test results are revealed. the coast guard flew the test samples from 45 passengers and crew members to richmond. they were taken by chp escort to a lab there. they tested people who were either showing symptoms or on the ship's first leg of the trip. three people from that leg did test positive for the coronavirus, one of those three

died. we talked to a passenger who is stuck right now on the grand princess about how everyone is feeling and holding up. >> on the whole, the mood of people is okay. but nervous. we're all anticipating what could happen next. >> the grand princess has announced that this will be the last trip for now. they have canceled the next cruise to hawaii, that was set to leave tomorrow. there's no word on where this ship will go or when. it depends on the test results. authorities say they will be making the decision once they get those. they're hoping that could be this morning. live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. as san francisco waits to hear when the cruise ship might dock, the city is already dealing with two cases of coronavirus. here's what we know. a man in his 90s is in serious condition and a woman in her 40s is in fair condition. health officials don't know how rgrus.ingtionnhe ed to the

the county is recommending all large-scale events be canceled. in a statement s.a.p. center said at this time we have not received any information about the coronavirus that would indicate a need to alter any of our operating procedures or reschedule events. sharks fans attending the game last night weren't too concerned. >> you still have to be careful, but to really disrupt especially sharks games? nah, i don't think so. i don't have that big of a concern about it. >> the children's discovery museum in san jose is closed until next tuesday and scheduled for decontamination. an employee reported on wednesday night they were in contact with someone who has covid-19. on the peninsula, the san bruno senior center is closed because of coronavirus concerns. the city says three volunteers with the lunch program were on the grand princess cruise that was connected with three covid-19 cases. one of those volunteers reported mild cold systems, they have gone away, but all three have been asked to

self-quarantine. nationally two more people died from the virus in the seattle area. that brings the u.s. total to 14. today president trump is expected to sign an $8.3 billion aid package to help stop the spread of the virus. vice president mike pence says the u.s. still does not have enough coronavirus test kits to meet the demand. the symptoms associated with covid-19 are fever, cough, shortness of breath. symptoms may appear 2 to 14 days after exposure. concern about the coronavirus may have you asking how can you protect yourself? >> the epa lists multiple clorox products effective against novel coronavirus. the oakland company's stock is up as disinfectants are selling out. a clorox scientist explains there is some good news about coronavirus.
