1:40 am
appreciate it. - okay. - yes. - tell me what happened. set everything up for us. why did you think you were getting in this year? - well, first of all, i had talked to a lot of people that had votes and were in the room, and they had known me for my playing career, and they were supporting me. i had about five, six people in that room, and that gave me confidence. coming out after they made the presentation, they told me that, "hey, it went very well. there's a good chance you might get this opportunity," and then also i thought being a finalist for the first time ever for the hall of fame, that this might be my opportunity to get in the hall of fame, and unfortunately, it didn't work out that way, but i wasn't overconfident, but i had more hope than i ever have had of getting that prestigious honor. - for a lot of people who don't watch football or don't get the hall of fame and what this means, i think this resonated because of the way it played out.
1:41 am
you don't have to be into football, but to see you there with your family and your friends, what was-- explain that moment to me. - it was very disappointing, very frustrating. i had a lot of people there, family, my grandkids, my kids, close friends. i invited every tv station in dallas there because i've known-- i've known them all. i've worked for every station here in town over the years. so i invited them all, they're all friends, so i invited them all. but the reason i wanted to make it public is because i wanted to share that positive moment with everyone, including cowboy fans because everywhere i go, people are saying, "you should be in the hall of fame." i get introduced sometimes when i'm making a speech presentation, "drew pearson, nfl hall of famer," and i get up to the podium, i say, "hey, you know something i don't know?"
1:42 am
- right. - so people-- a lot of people think you should be in there. so because of that, i wanted to make it public for everybody to see, but i didn't want-- think it would turn out in a negative way like it did, and when it did, i felt the disappointment and frustration of that moment, and i've never felt that kind of disappointment and frustration in my life. so it kind of overwhelmed me at that time. - well, it was a relatable moment. you are a class act, and let me just tell the story real quick. we're almost out of time. i was a young reporter reporting at ktvt, the station you're sitting in now. i was a mc of some random event that i went in. - yeah. - you do not remember this, i do. i went up to the water fountain following you because i wanted a picture, and i was scared to ask. i did not get the picture, but you turned to me and said, "would you like to go to the water fountain first?" and i said, "yes." i was not thirsty. i just wanted to be near drew pearson. so you-- - right on.
