news to build a better bay area. this is abc7 morning. good morning, everyone. it's saturday, march 7en, i'm liz kreutz and we have a lot to get with the latest on the coronavirus. first, let's look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> hey, liz, thanks. enough to get the ground wet and bring us real rain out there. it's still level one on the storm impact scale. it's not going to be with us all day, in fact, it's going to weaken and move to the south to the east of us throughout the second half of the day. here's a look as we take a look at the east bay where we have a more concentrated return, bear creek road.

westward into san pablo, towards the rich monday san rafael bridge. april few showers on 880 in hayward. and also looking at scattered showers around san jose, the santa cruz mountains. he's redwood city, mt. tam, a little breezy as that pushes through, anywhere 4 to 6 degrees cooler than we were yesterday. and a little fog out there as well. so, we'll talk about another chance of rain coming into play into the second half of the weekend. and a look ahead. liz. >> thank you, lisa. you can track this weekend's rain on the go on your foen. ad the abc7 news app. on developing news, the captain of the "grand princess" cruise ship has confirmed that supplies were dropped off by the u.s. coast guard last night. >> we regret that we require

medical assistance at the moment. the coast guard has been called. >> and that was a message from the captain of the ship saying that a sick passenger will be airlifted from the ship. it is unclear if it has already happened this morning. there's no official warning on where or when thedock. 21 people on the ship of those tested have been tested positive for the virus. and marine traffic shows the exact locate of the "grand princess." right now, it's about 20 miles all of the coast of the bay area. a little earlier this morning, it was headed in towards san francisco. you can see right now, it's headed in the direction away from the coast. it's continuing to circle. and liz pena together to a passenger who said they're not allowed to leave their rooms. >> we regret we require medical

assistance. >> reporter: after going around in circles, 4021 passengers and 1,000 crew members are heading closer to california. aboard, 21 people tested positive for the coronavirus. 19 crew passge>> iooks like we might be heading into san francisco. >> reporter: the captain of the "grand princess" explained that the u.s. coast guard requested they get closer to get supplies >> ink we're all getting cabin fever and apprehensive about what's next. >> reporter: miller said from san francisco to hawaii, later to mexico, took a turn asked to stay in the room with zero contact of anyone around them. this is what it looks like. >> lack of information making us all nervous. >> reporter: to the "grand

princess" cruise ship of the 100 tested for covid-19. >> the age on this cruise, m median age is 60 years old. >> reporter: and shedding light on what is happening. vice president pence confirmed that authorities tried to bring the cruise ship to a noncommercial port. as to where, that still remains unknown, in the newsroom, loz pena, abc7 news. >> for breaking news you can download the abc7 news app and enable a push alert. a case has been confirmed as the patient is an fbi agent. in santa clara county, there are now at least two dozen confirmed

cases. alameda county announced the third case, a passenger of the "diamond princess" who returned last month. >> we are learning that the man who had cpr did not have coronavirus. the 71-year-old man had been on the cruise with passengers diagnosed with the virus. sunnyvale sent home seven officers who came in contact with that man. and stanford university will cancel the final two weeks for the winter quarter. most classes will be moved online. the university confirmed that a faculty member in the system has tested positive for covid-19. people have been asked to self-isolate. >> and you can see on the map now, there are 52 coronavirus cases. the bulk of them in santa clara county with 24 cases. health officials warn as more people get tested, they expect the number of cases to increase. >> as those cases increase, many bay area organizers are facing

the tough decision of whether or not to cancel. the story from oakland as several big events went on as planned last night. >> reporter: on a warm summer night, the oakland first fridays street fair can attract up to 10,000 people. erica sat curbside enjoying street food. she said she isn't concerned about the coronavirus. some people are. it's one reason for the drop in attendance. >> we did have two people pull out out of caution. but as you can see, everyone is still eating takeout here. and everybody has to do their due diligence. >> reporter: sarah said extra sanitary conditions, but linda daniels is ready. >> i used the clorox, lysol

spray. and i have it in my i'm it nngt theocal coliseum. kiss. you are ready for today? >> i am so ready for tonight. huge fan? >> huge fan. >> reporter: sarah and her and know how to stay safe. >> from what i know about it, i'm in pretty good health. i know how to have basic hygiene. i don't think it's a problem. >> reporter: public health officials emphasize that common hygiene practices will go a long way. >> and san francisco leaders laid out drastic recommendations to try to slow the spread of the virus. the city called for confirmation of largeat gngrihe asnd sporting events. employers should be urged to let people work from home. and those most vulnerable, 60 and older, and those with certain health conditions are asked to limit their outing.

health officials. >> we have to think about should i stay home and get well? or should i keep working so i can at least be able to pay my bills? >> reporter: for a uber driver not able to take six leave is just one problem for gig workers. they're jobs also put them at risk. >> strangers, one chance that getting sick will be high. and then we're the first people to pick up people from airports. >> reporter: in a letter to these companies, tech platforms that employ gig workers, senator mark warner said i strongly urge that you attempt to address the potential hardship for your workers if they are sick or have to self-quarantine. according to don, the only messages he's received from uber, reminder to clean his car. gig workers are demanding a

better working condition, even an attempt to form a union. but with a work like this -- >> many of us can't afford start taking care of ourselves may substantially put our customers at risk as well. it's been a wild week on wall street. the dow closed down 256 points that's about 1%. it was down 900 points yesterday so that is a bit of a rebound. since that high, the index has falling 37 points that's because of coronavirus fears mixed with good and bad economic news. and south by southwest concert in austin, texas, was cancelled because of the of course coronavirus. that announcement was made

yesterday. there are 17 dehs and the cdc is ordering people with weakened systems to stay home as much as possible. with the travel and people chancing plans to stay home, a silver lining. >> reporter: in the airline business, covid-19 has created a basic supply and demand problem. too many empty seats, not enough action. corrective action, put it fares. >> i've seen fares to hawaii, some as low as $200. >> unfortunately, my fair did not come down, but, yeah, i think the airports are definitely more empty. >> reporter: airlines including united, alaska and delta are waiving cancellation and change fees in hopes people who decide not to ply now will eventually fly later. same with cruise lines like princess, whose "diamond

princess" and "grand princess" both. the ceo tweeted this out today. >> our onboard team have specific health protocols in place to help protect everybody's well-being. >> i haven't seen anything like this ans 9/11. >> reporter: he said he hasn't seen airlines with many seats to fill since the terrorist attacks 19 years ago. >> we've had united comesadomes to internationally, by 30t%. >> reporter: we are seeing discounting for cruises and flights during the month of march, early april. but we're not seeing big discounts for summer yet. it's having a bigger impact overseas. the biggest carrier in europe is slashing their flight by 50%. and the trump administration is

considering tax referrals to help keep the money flowing for them in the meantime. at sfo, derrick thomas, abc7 news. and celebrity cruises is a allowing passeo c up to 48 hours before they set sail. and to cancel, passengers need to call celebrity and they should expect to receive their credit within a week. visit california issued a statement about traveling to california and the emergency declaration. they said, fortunately, there are no further travel implications and visitors should feel safe and welcome to travel the state freely, maintaining the same standard precautions that they would at home. in the south bay, here is something that is not yet cancelled. legendary athletes are in town to meet fans in santa clara. several former and current stars will be at the santa clara for the gt sports, players include

randy lott, and fred biletnikoff will be there and klay thompson among others. admission is free, but it is depending on the athletes. as the cold front continues to push through the bay area, it's a level 1 on the storm impact scale and probably started while were you sleeping. we've seen everything from a couple hundredths to 0.2. here's a look at the progression, from west to east. from santa rosa up westward and dillon beach. scattered showers around 101, th novato,nd 80 as you're getting out of the bay area, slick roads towards the richmond

bridge. walnut creek and alamo, very light returns here. and things are scattered as we get towards the peninsula and the south bay. temperatures are cold, though, right above freezing at mt. hamilton. looking at the showers stacking up along highway 1. and the chance of showers we'll talk about that in a moment. and 50, san francisco. half moon bay. the temperatures have not changed much at all. you can see how it's damp out there from the golden gate bridge. 48, santa rosa, 52 and from sfo looking at clouds and fog. the drizzle, light rain, colder weather for the weekend. and, of course, we lose that hour sleep tonight. here's a look at the morning hours where we are focusing the rain from the north bay right on through the santa cruz mountains but as we into, shift to the east.

the higher elevations, by the afternoon, 3:00, 4:00, we've had sun in the north bay. it's cool, numbers are just stuck in the 50s. and from about 6:00 this morning, through 3:00 in the afternoon, lig we haven't seen this in over a month. with the 0.1 to 0.2, 0.2, 0.2, , it. six or seven inches, donner. and we're building for that snow impact that has been abysmal since all of february. 56 in richmond. 58 in freemont, a cool day today, the rain ending north to south. let's check out the next opportunity of rain. here we are on sunday. and as we get into the late part of the day, we could see a shower. this is monday. you see the activities along the central coast. by tuesday, another wave pushes up to the north. san jose, into san francisco,

this is overnight into wednesday morning. other than that, we're looking at maybe light shower activity throughout the middle of the week. but really, not quite even sure as we're keeping that storm impact scale on monday. the forecast, today, a 1. middle and upper 50s. a cool day. clouds tomorrow and maybe a sprinkle or two. monday, that next system and maybe a shower into tuesday. for parts of the south bay. and then looking at more sun coming out towards the end of the week. so, it looks like a little bit of winter for the weekend. and then we're back to maybe scattered showers. >> right. at the end of the week when we do have a little sunshine, we'll actually be able to enjoy it at night that we're losing an hour. >> right. are you riding public transit?

news to build a better bay area. this is abc7 mornings. good morning, everyone. we'll start this half hour with a look at the weather, here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> enjoying the light rain out there. it's been a level 1 all morning long. we had mist and drizzle

yesterday we got on this on friday, ahead of the system. but now with the system upon us, it's going to push through the pay area through the first half of the day. as we look at live doppler 7, you see the most enhanced activity has been right along the coast. we're taking you closer to san quentin, san rafael, and east bay, wet from highway 4, concord, pleasant hill. and big amounts about a quarter inch there, rain/snow mix, mt. hamilton. higher elevations in the hills wet and half moon bay, right here with mother nature, 52 by the delta. so, we're cooler than we have been. this will be the trend throughout the weekend. we get the rain throughout the morning hours today. then we're partly cloudy in the

afternoon. another system offshore. it is going to sink to the south of us offering up a little bit of rain we'll pinpoint where an seven-day forecast. liz. now, back to the coronavirus emergency, according to the cdc at least 234 people have been diagnosed with the virus in the abc's chief national correspondent matt gutman has more on the cruise ship 20 whiles off the coast. >> reporter: overnight conditions deteriorating aboard the "grand princess," a passenger requiring immediate medical assistance. the captain informing passengers the ship was moving to 20 miles offshore. >> coast guard has been called and a possible airlift may be possible tonight. >> reporter: the nature of the medical emergency is unknown. this comes just two days after test kits were lowered on to the ship. along with a pair of medical professionals and hours afternoon vice president mike pence announced that some of those kits tested positive. >> 46 persons were swabbed.

41 of those on the ship tested positive. for the coronavirus. among those were 19 crew members. and two passengers. >> reporter: the 2400 passengers already effectively in quarantine in their rooms, learning about the infections, along with the rest of the country. the ship's capital voicing his frustration. >> we apologize, we were not given advance notice by the u.s. federal government. it would have been our preference to be the first to make this news available to you. >> reporter: colleen on board with her husband paul is battling stage iv breast cancer and now fears. >> i go from laughing to trying to look on the positive side of this to tapping my face to crying hysterically. >> reporter: there are nine cases of the virus now linked to the ship's previous voyage. including that 71-year-old passenger who died after exhibiting symptoms before

getting off the ship two weeks ago. >> right now, it's just numbing. it's just trying to process this information. and see our life holds in the next couple weeks. >> reporter: no word yet on where the current cruise will dock or when. but now outside of this san francisco hospital, they're setting up tents to handle any overflow coronavirus patients. >> you know, all of us have stories, in theory, we understand that nobody wants the ship to dock at their port. but we have lives, too. >> reporter: matt gutman, abc news, san francisco. >> and we'll give a quick update a passenger aboard that ship does tell abc7 news that the sick passenger was airlifted off the ship this morning. now, the total number of states to have known infections is now at 24 after officials are scrambling to respond. and new york's governor just announced that 4,000 people across the state are in precautionary quarantine or a

state of emergency. and stephanie ramos has the latest. >> reporter: the first tests from covid-19, two people in florida succumbing to the new virus. one in the panhandle. the others near fort myers, both victims in their 70s with recent international travel. 2700 of those in new york city in self-quarantine. half of the confirmed cases linked to a lawyer who remains hospitaliz i critical but stable condition. >> this is like a flu on steroids. >> reporter: the state testing around the clock. abc with the first look at new york's department of health center in albany, the first state lab in the country to develop its own fda-approved coronavirus test. after the cdc's rollout of its test faced criticism. >> there has been a lag in the ability to get tested. >> reporter: fear now growing nationwide. some primary and secondary schools shutting down, including

these schools outside of philadelphia. and out west, the university of southern florida, stanford, and the university of washington all cancelling in-person classes for the next coming of weeks. in seattle, 30 health care workers deployed to a nearby nursing home linked to ten deaths. residents quarantined inside like susan haley, awaiting test results. >> one of my dear friends was brought in last weekend, and she died. she was in relatively good health. that is really makes you stop and think of the mess that you're in. >> reporter: businesses also affected, as some americans begin cutting back on social gatheri gatherings. overnight, the nba telling teams to prepare for the possibility of playing games with no fans. >> played with my teammates, i play for the fans, that's what it's all about. if i show to the arena ain't no fans there, i ain't playing.

him in a bag and throw him in the river. i'm glad that didn't happen because we got the little guy. that's a good boy. >> 2009, i got in a car accident. somebody ran threw a red light. ran from the cops i was paralyzed, airlifted. it's been life on wheels since then. you know, i make the best of it, keep going, no big deal. the whole community came together and built a ramp out front. tore up most of the carpet and put in hardwood. opened and widened most of the doorways in the house. put a back deck on, making sure that i had a comfortable place to call home. and roo, came along, he has little wheels, we had a perfect little house sets up for him. good boy. wheelchair for him. i'm a plumber so i used materials i'm comfortable with.

i've used pvc and skateboard wheels which i had around. and once he gets full grown, these are just temporary. >> his life could have been over because he was different. >> he really has a pretty good attitude about himself. he's having a blast throwing himself around. just being a regular dog. he doesn't see himself any different. just like me, having loving people around you makes stuff a little easier. that's a good boy. >> they don't threat it stop him. he's bouncing all around the house. he's traveling all over the place. he acts like -- >> doesn't matter, my buddies are picking me up ten flights of steps if they have to. everybody is there to lend a hand. >> when he was in a hospital room, people would come in very sad and say, hey, i'm still alive.

we have a number 1 on the impact scale and that's allowing for the weak system throughout the next three hours or so. back side of it, we're breeze, partly cloudy, 0.2 inch rain. very cloudy shot there from the camera. it's a rather look here in san francisco. we've had a few areas of drizzle and light rain yesterday. here's a look at live doppler 7. you can see the green, most of the activity has been heaviest along the coast. we've seen it all the way towards inland valley it's, the south bay. as we look at dillon beach and inverness, some rain there, sausalito, 101. and we take a look at 680, very scattered showers through concard and hercules. looking at wet weather berkeley. we're looking for the system to move through by the afternoon. best amounts would be south of san francisco where the rain is

lingering longer. then this system is going to dive basically to the south of us but there are some chances of rain in the seven-day outlook. here's a look at east bay. 50 in the city, oakland at 53. the golden gate bridge really socked in with the fog and miflt and drizzle out there. but you'll see more sun throughout the afternoon, this front is going to dinger east and south throughout the next few hours. 52 in concord, 51 in livermore. and some sun in the mountains. but we have a winter weather advisory. snow for the second half of the day. rain, spotty drizzle. losing an hour of sleep tonight. for the next few hours, you see the south bay, showers lingering. and partly cloudy skies in the north bay. the rest of you could see showers archshower showers around 1:00, 2:00.
