at ross. yes for less. news to build a better bay area, this is abc7 morning. it is sunday, march 8th. i'm liz corey. thank you for joining us. we will get to the latest on the coronavirus in a minute. let's start with a quick look at the weather with lisa argen. >> good morning. it's certainly a cooler start out there. doppler 7 shows a system offshore that will be diving to the south that will give us a chance of showers as we start the week. upper 40s in santa cruz. the air be mass that moved through, 36 from gilroy and san e u 40s high clouds, num 24 hours ago we were milder with the front, even though we had all of the race, 11 views here

beautiful. and we will be looking at the clouds throughout the day today. not talking about any rain. temperatures on the cool side. we will talk about that system just skirting the bay area. how much rain and where we may see some in the days to> detail about the "grand princess" cruise ship off the california coast. passengers were told late last night they will be docking in oakland tomorrow. they were first told it would happen today. according to the california office of emergency services the ship will only be docked at the port of oakland while passengers disembark. they say this is the easiest to seal off and protect passengers and safety of the public. nearly 1,000 passengers on board the ships are californians. those who acquire acute medical treatment will be transferred to health facilities. those who do not require care will go to an isolation facility. nontested crew will be taken to

other states and the crew treated and quarantined on the ship. saying, i appreciate the governor's help. true to values, oakland is a state harbor for all. here's a view from the tower cam showing the trips. so far the disembarkment will take several days. taking look at the website that shows the location of the "grand princess" right now. you can see it's heading in the direction of the coast but continues to circle around off the coast of san francisco now. abc7's luouise pena has more to say about the disembarkment. >> reporter: the wait is overment. >> we're in the port of oakland. >> reporter: more than 3,500 people aboard the "grand princess" cruise ship are finally heading to land. the captain of the ship

rs aboard the ship that tested positive for the coronavirus will disembark first. >> the people that have already tested positive will probably be the ones that will get off firt. >> and anybody with medical issues. >> and anybody with medical issuidents were growing weary with lack of information, stuck in their cabins, getting their food left at the door and having zero contact to anyone around them. they're now calling a sign of hope are supplies from another boat. >> we slowed down to almost half a knot and we have to have that whatever tug is coming close to us. let me go take a look. >> reporter: earlier in the day a passenger with the non-coronavirus medical emergency was transferred by the u.s. coast guard from "grand cern of virus crippled around the ship, vice president

pence made this agreement -- >> we're furthering enhancing entrance and exit screening. >> reporter: thousands finally have good news to look forward to. >> we will sleep well tonight. >> reporter: passengers who do not require acute medical help will go to a testing facility in california for isolation. crew members will be quarantined and treated aboard that ship. we will, of course, stay on top of this in the newsroom. we're also learning the northern california man who died last week was likely infected with coronavirus before he boarded the "grand princess" in san francisco february 11th. the chief medical officer of carnival cruises say the passenger sought medical treatment on the ship saying he had symptoms of a respiratory illness of about a week. the coronavirus has incubation period of five to six days. so they say it's likely the man was infected prior to boarding. 60-year-old crystal is aboard the "grand princess" and has stage four cancer and afraid she won't make it home to start

chemotherapy tomorrow. >> gave me four radiation treatment and painkillers saying why don't you go for two weeks. we will get started and bring you back monday or tuesday. i'm still worried i'm going to not get back. i recently lost my dad and i just believe he's upstairs going to fix this whole situation somehow. and i'm going to test negative and get to go home and get some treatment. >> coal stow, who is from grand forks north dakota is with her husband paul. she was diagnosed with end corinne cancer 18 months ago. she underwent chemo and had the ovaries removed but the cancer returned, spreading to her lower back. our hearts are with her this morning. and santa cruz county has its first positive test of covid-19. they traveled on the cruise ship february 11th to the 21st. the name and hometown are not being released. health officials are investigating any possible

exposure with other residents. and new this morning a passenger on the carnival cruise ship docked in the port of long beach tested negative for the virus. the company said guests have been cleared to disembark. t next carnival cruise will >an fncisco banned all upa toy. nonessential group events city facilities the next two weeks, buildings like the grand auditorium. this as six cases of thronaviru. all six are being isolated at home and in did condition. there are now eight confirmed cases in the city but officials say they expect more. >> the virus is circulating in our community. we expect to get more confirmed cases. we have seen that in the state and in our region so this is not unexpected. >> the city of san francisco has received 1,000 test kits for covid-19. the health department said

they're ordering more and not worried about running out. oak grove high school is undergoing a deep cleaning this weekend because a student had contact with a family member who has the coronavirus. the student has not exhibited any symptoms but is quarantined and will be tested. activities at oak grove were canceled or moved to another site. and eight cases are reported in the county, up to 32, including a person who lives in gilroy. a firefighter was called for a person with chest pape. that person was taken to kaiser in san jose and later confirmed to have coronavirus. officials say the firefighter who had contact with that person are symptom free so far. we'll have much more coronavirus coverage throughout the newscast. stick with us here or go to abc7news.com/coronavirus. we have an entire page dedicated to related stories and information you need to know. we will circle back on

here's a live look from the golden gate bridge. time is 9:12. if you have been outside, you know it is pretty chilly this morning, so grab a jacket. the coronavirus is hitting at the tight of spring break travel season. abc news reporter marcy gonzalez is looking into the travel concerns, sorting out facts from fiction. >> reporter: this morning with airlines reducing flights and major companies canceling nonessential travel for employees over coronavirus concerns, many are now asking whether their vacations should be called off too. >> it's really a personal decision, and it depends on your comfort zone. how old are you? and what is your health like? >> reporter: the cdc only recommends avoid trips to china, south korea, iran and italy. but for healthy travelers does not recommend canceling or postponing travel to other destinations.

officials called for measures, including canceling large gatherings. the sharks said the planned weekend games will go on ahele e avalanche tonight. we are committed to building a better bay area and one of the things we're focusing on is housing. there's an effort to speed up afordable housing in california. governor scott wiener has cleared a bill to reduce the way for institutions to build affordable housing units on their property. wiener tried three times to pass legislation to create more housing in california. safety is another part of building a better bay area. in marin county a measure to provide millions a year is currently passing. currently it's getting over 68%. there are thousands of votes to be counted. the registrar of voters say it could be two weeks before the

we loo outside, cool view with the clouds and interesting web out there from the south bay looking at 47 in san francisco. 52, nice recovery in oakland.edn jose. you can see some of the low clouds here. high clouds as well. san francisco on the cool side. finally out of the 30s in santa rosa. 40 now and 35 with fog in petaluma, 43 in napa with upper 40s in the inland east bay. look at the fog at mt. tam. today will be try for you but we will see more cloud cover as the tim offshore brings us some of the cover. keeps us dry though. comes into play tomorrow and tuesday. and sunshine for those of you who will not see the rain, which is most of the bay afternoon, check it out, mostly cloudy skies and by the later part of the day, still looking

at the clouds. going into the overnight hours, this is monday morning. by monday afternoon, rainline begins to move up just a little bit further to the north. so later on, the dry time from san jose, the hills, mt. hamilton, could see a few showers on monday. highs on the cool side, just mid-50s half moon bay, 58 in santa rosa. maybe 10 degrees cooler than you should be for some areas for the early part of march. looking at 60 in fremont and palo alto. let's follow the rain line into tuesday. here we are early tuesday, well south of us. as we go through the afternoon, here it is noontime around gilroy and mesgh south bay. 3:00 on tuesday. by the evening commute again looking at some showers from higher elevations, maybe diablo range of the santa cruz mountains and drier areas

tuesday. if you're not seeing rain and clouds, numbers will be on the mild side with a little bit of sun out there. until wednesday, we're in the 70s. look at the warmest day of the week, thursday. upper 70s for some of you. the accuweather forecast, upper 50s around the bay and coast. 60 inland. a lot of clouds around. level one on our storm impact scale. scattered clouds and showers monday and tuesday. still looking though, temperatures will pop up into the upper 60s for some of you. by wednesday looking at milder weather. some of the warmer days will arrive by the end of the week and then looking at maybe cooler weather into the weekend. so usually that has been the pattern. we warm up and cool off. but hopefully a few showers. south bay did good, over quarter inch yesterday and north bay, .10th or so. >> my the lunch and she said oh, my good, it was pouring for a little bit of time

cases. the company said the two are not showing symptoms of the virus. we will keep you posted on what the outcome of their test is. meanwhile italy announced a sweeping quarantine that will restrict the movement of about 16 million people. this includes the region of lombardi and 15 other provens in the country's north area. abc7's stephanie ramos has more. >> reporter: this morning a scrambling in northern italy as officials order a lockdown. nearly a quarter of the nation's population under travel restrictions in a bid to slow the coronavirus. a u.s. sailor stationed in naples, italy, testing positive for kwoev. the pentagon also confirming a marine in virginia has tested positive as well after traveling overseas. and overthinight the first case covid-19 discovered in the nation's capital. a man in his 50s. >> appears to have no history of international travel and no

close contacts with a confied case. 346 in new york state, governor andrew cuomo declaring a state of emergency. at least 89 confirmed viruses. v including a man, uber driver, in his 30s, hospitalized in queens. uber saying they removed the man's access to the app and working with government health officials. the governor blaming the federal government saying the state isn't getting enough money to fight the virus and there are not enough tests. >> the cdc is a bottleneck for this nation in doing the testing. i believe the cdc was caught flat-footed. and i y' slown theiresponse and slowing e state. outbrea al personnel could be seen transporting one woman in an isolation pod who tested positive to the university of nebraska medical center, where other covid-19 patients are being treated.

thousands of people in the u.s. asked to self-quarantine. our own senior correspondent ian panel is going try one right now overseas after reporting from asia. >> this is it. this is quarantine. and it's a very, very strange experience. it's quite lonely. it's quite isolating. it's the right thing to do. there was no alternative. what i have realized having covered up close is that unless we all act in the best interest of each other, then it makesepo cdc testing kits were sent to california, and washington state. the cdc says initially there were some manufacturing problems but those issues have been resolved. they say by monday an additional 6,000 testing kits will be made available to public health labs. stephanie ramos, abc news, new york. and attendee at last week's conservative political reaction

conference in maryland tested positive for covid-19. president trump and vice president pence were at the conference but officials say they were never in close contact with the person who tested positive. the american conservative union said the exposure occurred before the conference and the person infected has been quarantined in new jersey. more coronavirus test kits are arriving in california. at least 15 health departments now have them. contra costa county had 300 kits and helped test officials on the "grand princess." health officials in other parts of the country have expressed concerns about a storage of the kit. and san francisco canceled several events, including today's sunday streets in the mission. walt disney family museum in the presidio is closed today and annual san francisco st. patrick's day parade, set for this coming saturday, has calle. sales force is j growing number of companies encouraging people to work from home if they can because of the coronavirus. this goes for workers in both

kamala harris announced she will join biden in detroit tomorrow night for a joint rally on the eve of the all-important michigan primary. and senator bernie sanders appeared on "this week" with george stephanopoulos saying he will officially receive the endorsement of reverend jesse jackson in the rally in michigan today. he talked about how his and biden's agenda are, in his words, very different. >> we're all winning the grassroots in america because we have an agenda that speaks to people. our agenda said health care is a human right. our agenda is very different and our record is very different than joe biden's. we're in a crisis in america not only in the need to defeat donald trump, the most dangerous president in modern america history, but to take on hat our about. it's very different than joe's. >> senator sanders said the results in michigan won't make or break his campaign but he did say it's important to his path to the nomination. michigan has the most delicates

so we are not just going to catch up. we're looking at maybe a few areas of showers in the next couple of days. live look outside from our exploratorium camera. few areas of sun out there right on the water and looking at a cool day today with temperatures below where they should be this time of year. here's our roof camera. you can see the flags flowing there. 47 in the city and gilroy, 44 redwood city. it's 52 in oakland, 50 in san jose, half moon bay 30s to 50s and we look for temperatures to stay in the low 50s. had about 39-minute delays at sfo. 40 in santa rosa. still cold in petaluma at 35 with fog issues there. low 40s napa. 47 in concord livermore. it's up and down with the temperatures this morning anywhere from 2 to 7 degrees cooler right now. you're certainly seeing that and

maybe having problems with the fog up in petaluma. otherwise visibility of golden gate bridge here. partly cloudy skies. overall we will see more clouds today and looking at a chance of showers tomorrow for tuesday mainly around san jose and higher elevations of santa cruz mountains. then sunny and warmer parts of the bay as well. here's today. you can see the cloud cover. we're going through the afternoon and we've got a mostly cloudy afternoob with overnight lows tonight on the cool side. as we get into your monday, no issues here. maybe fog in the morning, stopping late in the day monday. we will see some showers prap here in the south bay. the higher elevations and will take us through the later hours into monday. today though it's only about the mid-50s at the coast, 59 in oakland, san mateo 56, and vallejo, about 60 is all we can imagine in san jose. talking about the rain in

southern california. the pacific northwest and right in between the bay area, only .300 out of the next seven days. maybe santa rosa can most of the energy heading to the south and that leaves us out of it. overnight tonight then temperatures will be in the 40s. with the cloud cover maybe a few degrees warmer but otherwise we will look for partly cloudy skies in the north bay. numbers there about 60 in santa rosa to the mid-60s tomorrow. elsewhere, chance of showers into the afternoon for you monday and tuesday. but we're warming up each day. by the middle of the week, more sunshine with temperatures in the upper 60s to near 70. this point it looks like we could see another system by the end of next weekend. but you notice in between we've got more 70s arriving with partly cloudy skies. today cool out there and feeling certainly below average out there. >> and we will take what we can get in terms of the rain.
