held a press conference with mayor libby schaaf andga. employees to explain. oak land is close to travis air force base where californians will be taken to be quarantined for 14 days. finally, it's near the oakland airport, where international passengers will be sent home. >> there will be no contact with the general population in terminals, at the oakland airport -- >> reporter: the governor says oakland wasn't the first choice. >> we had originally looked at alameda as a preferable site. the old naval station there. unfortunately, some of the sittisilt issues created concerns. >> reporter: san francisco's port was ruled out because it's too close to a major population center. >> we recognize this is a time we must be guided by facts and not fears. >> reporter:ch oue port of oakland plan, but only learned of the details this morning. she says the city has to help in

this time of national emergency, but adds, her residents come first. >> i will say my questions are not over. i will be continuing to ask them and expect answers and that i will be sharing that information with the public in realtime. >> reporter: mayor schaaf says this operatin will be conducted by federal employees. port of oakland employees will not participate. this whole process could take about three days. once passengers have been cleared the ship will leave the bay area. reporting live in oakland, anser hassan, abc 7 news. >> during the press conference governor newsom praised the president and his administration for their response to the crisis. >> i had a private conversation with him around 4:30 west coast time. and he said everything that i could have hoped for. and we had a very long conversation. and every single thing he said they followed through on. >> newsom said the

administration was supportive in the efforts to get the passengers off the ship and back on u.s. soil. there are mixed emotions in oakland tonight about the decision to bring the cruise ship to that city and not san francisco. >> abc 7 news reporter j.r. stone continues team coverage tonight live. j.r.? >> reporter: there are mixed emotions out here. i asked a man who works at the port of oakland if he's okay with this decision. that the ship come in tomorrow. this is what he had to say. >> it was in san francisco, and they should be able to try to handle it there instead of shipping it somewhere else, you know. so, i mean -- they're going to do what they want to do, but in essence, if it's a problem started there, they should be able to try to contain it and maintain it where it's at.ke ia went on to say that he's okay with the ship being docked at

the port, he's just concerned about the whole process here. he like many other people doesn't want the virus to spread when passengers start getting off of the ship. he believes the problem could get worse if there is any mix-up over the next couple of days. i did talk with a number of people here in oakland who say they are okay with the decision, saying they feel for those passengers and that those people deserve to be taken off that ship. >> i understand the coronavirus is a global threat, and i think i understand the statistics. so i'm accepting the threat level as it is, yeah. >> i think everyone would be more at ease ifelnghes s on if i was on that cruise ship, i'd want some answers too. >> there seems to be way too

much hysteria building around this, and i just think it's really unfortunate. >> reporter: the governor says the port of oakland is the most ideal spot to be docked, but still, you heard that right there, so much mixed emotion out there this evening. >> abc 7 news reporter luz pena talked to "grand princess" passengers today who were eager to begin the process of going home. >> we learned today from governor newsom there are 9662 californians aboard the "grand princess" cruise ship. we spoke to several who are looking forward to the disembark case process monday hoping to get the process over as soon as poss passenre weary, some letting their concerns turn into melody. ♪

facility outside the state. >> we have to stay on the ship another couple of days until the higher-priority people get taken off first, which is fine. floating in circles out here is not progress. >> reporter: before the disembarking process governor newsom announced they will send mobile medical teams to perform rapid assessment of passengers aboard the ship to make sure they don't have any unmet medical needs not related to the coronavirus. in the newsroom, luz pena, abc 7 news. >> the number of bay area cases is now at 76. santa clara county says it has five new cases. contra costa county also says it has five new cases. archbishop reardon high school in san francisco announced today it has canceled all classes and activities for tomorrow. ica crystal ray academy also in san francisco will close two weeks after a staffmember tested positive for the virus.

emeryville showing you overcast skies. the sun is still up thanks to daylight saving time beginning early this morning. the sunset happening at 7:10 p.m. accuweather highlights the next couple of days. live cloud cover going to hang overnight tonight. we'll start our monday with mainly overcast skies. we'll track an isolated shower in the forecast both monday and tuesday. a new storm system will move into southern california and soak parts of l.a. and palm springs. for us we'll be on the outer fringe of that storm system, so barely just an isolated shower in the forecast. warmer and brighter to finish out the week. thursday and friday back into the 60s and 70s. right now we've kind of been stuck in the 50s throughout the spire day thanks to cloud cover. 56 in the city right now. 55 in novato. 57 in san jose. right now oakland a temperature of 59. overnight tonight, those numbers will slowly fall thanks to that cloud cover overhead. mainly into the 40s in most

cities. a couple of 30s on the back and forth in the north bay. not as cold tonight as you were last night. lurch doppler radar, along with satellite, you can see that air of circulation here. that's the storm we are tracking that's going to move into southern california. we're going to get brushed by. a few isolated showers monday into tuesday from that system. future weather, 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, partly to mostly cloudy skies. there's a chance of an isolated shower in the north bay. you do notice there's nothing widespread or substantial. as we head into the afternoon, what we'll be watching is for another shower to likely pop up in the south bay. parts of the south bay for the evening commute tomorrow will likely feature wet roth ways to finish out the day. the next 48 hours, you can really see that soaking storm in southern california. l.a. likely over 1 inch of rain. over the next two days, palm springs likely more than 2.5 inches. same in san diego. northern california remains low in terms of rainfall numbers, so
