live at sky 7 over the grand princess cruse ship as thousands of passengers are waiting to exit. it arrived at the port of oakland carrying at least 21 people infected with coronavirus. you can see sky 7 over head. it all started with the grand princess passing under the golden gate bridge. >> around 20 minutes later going under the bay bridge. depending on the tide at the time, the grand princess may have had about 12 feet of clearance. it made it through with ease. next stop was the port of oakland. >> at about 12:15, it appeared to have finally docked.

passengers out on their balconies watching, some even waving at sky 7. >> at 2:30 we saw what appears to be a male passenger being helped onto a gurney. the man was loaded into an ambulance and taken away. >> the ship settled into berth 22 at the port of oakland just after noon. hours later thousands of passengers are still waiting to get to solid ground. >> reporter: we arrived here just before noon. the ship was pulling in within a few minutes after noon. it was here, it was berthed. this is where it remains. they are in the process, a lengthy process of disembarking all of the passengers. we understand at this point 23

have been taken off of the ship. 21 who were ill and two companions of those patients. in the meantime, the others are waiting to get off. not nearly the homecoming they expected but the 3500 passengers and crew aboard the grand princess must have felt relief as they inch closer to the end of their harrowing journey, pulling into berth 22 at an oakland port normally reserved for cargo ships. dozens of passengers lined the balconies and railings as the ship came in. emergency workers, buses and ambulances prepared to greet them. >> it's fairly close to us. >> reporter: this man owns a trucking company just down the road from where the grand princess is moored. >> there were about 20 ambulances going code 3 as the ships were coming in. it seems like they're taking the infected people off first.

>> reporter: about two hours after the ship docked, the first of the ill patients began to be offloaded into those waiting ambulances. so far 21 people on board have tested positive for the coronavirus, the majority of them crew members. abc 7 news obtained this video of a ship ramp being delivered to the port side of the ship in preparation for the well passengers to disembark. about 1,000 are from california. many will be transported to travis air force base for a 14-day quarantine. members of the public lined the roadway trying to get a look at a ship and a voyage that ended in a way few could imagine. >> i can't imagine what they're going through. i've been on one cruise. they're tiny little rooms and really uncomfortable. >> reporter: we understand that all 21 of those who tested positive for coronavirus have

disembarked and are no longer here at the port. they're on their way to local hospitals for treatment as we speak. it's our understanding that the next round of passengers to disembark will be those from canada. they will be taken to the oakland airport where they will board charters and quarantine elsewhere. after the canadians, it will be time for those 1,000 californians to disembark. they will go to travis air force base or to miramar down in southern california. >> we're still waiting for more than 2,000 passengers to disembark. earlier today some of them waved at sky 7 from their decks.decksk >> they seem to be coming up with creative ways to occupy their time. >> they really are. they're all in good spirits, many look forward to seeing

87-year-old elena and harry have been confined to their room since thursday. their granddaughter michelle has been their roommate in support. you have your granddaughter with you to lean on. >> she entertains us a lot. >> they entertain me. >> we did zumba today again. even grandpa got up and did it. >> docking in the port of oakland is a victory but not the final step. many of these people still need their luggage tags to disembark. >> we packed last night. we are ready to go. >> what are the precautions the captain is asking you to take? >> wear masks and stay six feet away from the person next to you. >> before the disembarking process began, medical teams got on board to perform rapid assessment of passengers aboard the ship to make sure they don't have any unmet medical needs unrelated to the virus.

princess cruse ship that return from mexico on february 21st. public health officials have isolated people who have been in close contact with the patient. >> that brings the total number of confirmed cases in the bay area to 82. the state total stands at 120. the cdc says there are 423 cases in 35 states. the world health organization is reporting 109,000 confirmed cases world wide. >> fears about the virus and its impact on the economy especially the oil industry sent financial markets into a freefall today. the dow dropped more than 2,000 points, its worst single day drop since the 2018 financial crisis. at one point trading was halted for 15 minutes to try and slow the purge. the dow and nasdaq also tanked. one stock that didn't suffer, oakland based clorox, managing

to gain ground finishing up nearly 1% today. more now on covid-19's impact. >> reporter: investors are rattled by the spread of the coronavirus, then oil prices started plunging as a result of a price war between saudi arabia and russia. uncertainty creates a lack of confidence in where the economy is heading. >> it indicates people are concerned about a recession. i think there's reason to be. people are staying home from work, not traveling, not spending. >> reporter: many analysts believe silicon valley is especially vulnerable. major tech companies saw their stock prices drop between 6-8% today. while no one likes to forecast a recession, silicon valley saw over 105,000 jobs lost during the 2008 recession. among the concerns is how dependent tech companies are on

this is a live look over the grand princess cruse ship at the port of oakland. it docked around 12:15 this afternoon. we did see a person get taken off the ship and get loaded into an ambulance around 90 minutes ago. we were told it could take two to three days to get everyone off of the ship. >> some passengers who live in california will be taken to travis air force base to be quarantined. >> lauren martinez is there live with the latest. >> reporter: we are standing by waiting for those buses of californians to arrive. of those 962 californians, those that do not show any signs of the virus will be taken to a

military base in southern california to miramar or here to travis air force base. once they get here they will be tested and quarantined for 14 days. this is the same base where passengers from the diamond princess cruse ship were quarantined after the outbreak in japan. this is also a look inside one of the rooms here at travis from a person that was quarantined last month. >> some of my friends have asked me what my quarantine looks like. >> reporter: hopefully their accommodations here will be more spacious than their cruse ship cabins. yesterday governor newsom said it could take three days or longer to get passengers off the grand princess. anyone who develops symptoms once they are here at a base will be taken off site and transferred to a medical facility. those who do not show any signs

replicate that at all. they're following all the isolation protocols. i think we're in a good place. >> we've gotten so many comments from viewers saying should i still go. how do you mitigate the risk? >> i think the cruise industry is having a little bit of a pr issue. i think the risk comes down to your own individual situation. you have to understand where you're going. is there an outbreak there? is it worth taking this specific trip? you have to look at where you're going, is their health care system analogous to ours, do you have medical supplies if you were to get stuck somewhere or quarantined. >> when you just answered that question, obviously if you're taking a cruise and there are small children on board or even small children day to day.

why is it they're not the ones getting sick? because we have all these schools closing down, a lot of classes are being cancelled. >> this might be the only silver lining about coronavirus. as far as we've seen, children are not getting as bad of an illness from this coronavirus. scientists theorize this is one of many things could be happening. children have really robust immune systems. it's also possible children have seen a similar coronavirus and their immune systems might be ready to defend this. children can still catch this coronavirus at the same rate, meaning they can still spread it to other people like the elderly or people with chronic illnesses who might be at more risk. >> the people who have lower immune systems or compromised ones? >> absolutely. >> this has been interesting also because as the coronavirus has spread across the globe, this has really become almost a beacon of reason to have the

discussion about health care inequity and the people who can seek treatment and can be quarantined. this opens up a whole host of questions as to how do you treat this when perhaps you don't have the sick days available. >> yes. i don't like the fact that it took an epidemic to amplify healthcare inequity in this country. we have to look about what it may be for someone who doesn't have health insurance to be tested or hospitalized. a lot of parents can't take time at home because they are a single working parent and they have to work to provide for their children. new york state, the school might be the only place a child is going to get a consistent meal every day. there's a lot of social quality issues and health care and society in general, we have to really look at when it comes to

hospitals after they leave the cruse ship. i also do want to mention that we are currently outside the office of emergency management here in santa clara county where folks here are going to be talking about the county's first covid-19 related death. as we await those details, i also want to mention that a number of hospitals in the area say they are ready to handle any surge in patients and that includes anyone that comes from the grand princess cruse ship. with the novel coronavirus on the minds of many, medical professionals in our community are stressing the importance of facts over fear. >> people do want to know what's going on. they're hearing about it all the time. but i think panic and fear should not be something that we should be really engaging in right now. >> reporter: hospitals across the bay area including stanford health are prepared for an uptick in cases. >> we have all of the right

are ill and we're grateful they're being able to disembark first. >> reporter: once those passengers arrive here at the airport, they will be flown to either texas or georgia to those military bases where they will be quarantined. of course, the california residents are being bussed to two military bases in california where they will also be quarantined. >> we have psychologist dr. jonathan horowitz of the san francisco stress and anxiety center to talk to us more. thank you for joining us. how pervasive do you think is the fear in the community? i hear some people saying we're fine, the flu is worse. i hear other people going i don't know, i should be a little concerned. >> that might be right. you should be a little concerned about it. it's hard to quantify how much fear is actually out there but

it's certainly something we're seeing in our clinic. people are anxious about the medical impact but there's anxiety about the financial impact, the restriction on travel, things like that. some anxiety is good and necessary because it motivates you to make necessary changes but it's bad when it turns to panic or obsession or avoidance. >> how do you not go over the edge? once you get on that anxiety train, it's hard to get off. >> so i think if you're making changes in your behavior that are consistent with public health recommendations, things that doctors and experts are telling us we should be doing, i think that makes a lot of sense. for example, if you have a new routine where you're going to wash your hands as soon as you get to work, that's something you can do to sort of set yourself at ease and it's a pretty reasonable thing. if you notice you're a person who tends to ka tas

you want to come back to what's happening right now and is anything bad actually happening, is it going to happen? probably not, right? >> right. you get on that worse case scenario and you get way ahead of yourself. >> it's true. it's something that our minds do. i think it's important to keep perspective. there's so much information right now, so much attention on this. but we've had public health crises before. we do want to take necessary precautions but it's important to remember that we've gotten through things before and we're going to get through this. >> if you're someone who feels like maybe you can't keep your feelings under control, what are some steps to take? >> if you're having severe anxiety we recommend that you call a medical professional and make sure there's nothing medical. aside from that, reaching out to

mental health experts. a lot of the work we do know is done over skype. even if you can't leave your house or you're working from home or whatever, you can still get in to see a professional. i recommend reaching out. >> do you work with adults or kids? >> we work with mainly adults and some kids. >> i wonder for the people old enough to see what's happening and understand that there's some sort of virus threat, how much do you tell them? how do you them from getting so much anxiety? >> i think the most important thing is to be aware of your own anxiety because anxiety is contagious and your kriids are going to pick up on this. you want to use positive reenforcement with kids, you don't want to scare them. they're going to be aware of how you're reacting to this situation. just be mindful of that.

it's time now for the four at 4:00. work is underway to care for the passengers at the grand princess after docking in oakland around noon today. let's take a live look from sky 7. you can see some of the passengers finally being able to disembark. we're told these are the passengers from the interior cabins, people who didn't have the nice balcony views. the people who already tested positive for the coronavirus, the passengers and crew members, those people were already taken off. we're hearing that the people who left first are canadians. they'll be taking a charter back to canada. other people who get to get off first are passengers in the interior cabins. chef jose andres's non-profit

city? it's not realistic to think. >> that's a good point. >> next a british company that conducts studies on viruses is denying reports that it's looking to hire people to be infected with coronavirus. the times of london and other news agencies have been reporting that they were looking for 24 volunteers for a medical trial that aims to find a vaccine for covid-19. according to the reports each volunteer would be paid $4500 and be quarantined for two weeks. >> wow. >> but a notice on the company's website says it's not recruiting any volunteers for studies on coronavirus at the moment. >> whether or not this is true, we've all got a price, right? >> what is the two weeks like also? >> is it just a small room, is it a nice house. >> let's talk numbers. i think we've got to talk seven digits at least. >> seven digits? >> i have medical school debt. i'll do it for like 500 bucks.

we shouldn't joke about that. >> moving on, government agencies in the state of new york won't be facing a hand sanitizer shortage. >> open the curtain, please. >> governor cuomo used a little showmanship to announce that new york is now producing its very own hand sanitizer. cuomo says the product is superior to others on the market because it contains 75% alcohol, 15% more than the minimum standard. the product will be handed out to schools, transit systems, prisons, other government run agencies. does that matter if it's a higher percentage? >> we just know it needs to be 60%. there's a lot of do it yourself kits out there. people are like i use this bottle of vodka or everclear.

going back out live to the port of oakland, the grand princess which finally docked today, we see the canadian tent right close to the ship. the canadians were going to be some of the first let off of the ship. the people who did test positive for coronavirus were let off earlier, got whatever medical attention they needed. now they're letting people from the interior cabins disembark first. >> i'm sure they're looking forward to some fresh air and sunshine. the city of dublin cancelled its annual st. patrick's day

celebrations because of concerns over the virus. it was scheduled to take place this weekend but the event is over. the festival included a parade, 5k fun run and pancake breakfast. last year nearly 80,000 people attended. the walt disney family museum announced they'll be shutting down until at least march 20th. the museum said they made the choice based on mayor london breed's guidance. the museum says they're trying to prevent potential exposure to their staff and volunteers. disney is the parent company of abc 7. as you can imagine, there are lots of closures and cancellations because of the coronavirus. we have a list of them at our website abc7news.com. that's where we are constantly updating the list. let's get a check on our
