home. as it started to go under the golden gate bridge, you could hear the roar of cheers from the passengers. it was very moving. >> just passed under the golden gate bridge, the bay bridge headed into oakland. the mood is exciting on the deck. people were cheering when we passed under the golden gate bridge. >> our ship and our captain and crews have done a remarkable job in light of all of this going on and making sure that we had what we needed, we were comfortable. >> many people were in good spirits. taking a live picture from oakland, the grand princess cruse ship pulls into port after idling for days because of a cluster of coronavirus cases board. >> really remarkable how up beat many of those passengers are. we have live team coverage on today's events. reporters fanned out all across

the bay area to bring you the latest. >> ambulances have been seen leaving the ship. the sickest passengers were allowed to leave first. sky 7 took these pictures of dozens of people walking off the ship. most of these people are walking toward those tents with canadian flags on them. there are as many as 237 canadian passengers. canada is planning to bring them to a canadian military base where they'll be checked out and quarantined for 14 days. >> reporter: the governor said the disembarkment of the grand princess would have as quickly as possible once it happened here in oakland. the ship pulled in here a little less than five hours ago. a few moments ago we saw what appeared to be the first major

disembankment. dozens of people getting off this ship, coming down a long ramp. most of them went to the tents flying those canadian flags, but not all of them. we understand there may also be californians among them. all of these folks obviously anxious to finally be getting off the ship. as promised, the first passengers off the grand princess were the ill, the 21 people who tested positive for coronavirus. most of them crew members. just after noon the huge ship inched into berth 22 at the port of oakland, a berth normally reserved for cargo ships. dozens of passengers lined the balconies and railings as their ship came in. emergency workers, buses and ambulances prepared to greet them. >> we have to take care of people. i feel sad for the people on board the ship.

they need to get treated. it seems like the response is here. >> reporter: about 1,000 of them are from california. many of those will be transported by bus to travis air force base for a 14-day quarantine. almost as soon as the grand princess docked in oakland, members of the public lined the roadway trying to get a look at a ship and a voyage that ended in a way few could imagine. >> pretty crazy, pretty neat to see it but kind of scary. i'm not scared of the coronavirus but it just seems like if we all stay calm, everything is going to be fine. >> i hope this all stops soon. like i said, i work in the travel industry. it's devastating. >> reporter: we understand that canadians and those from other countries will be transported to oakland airport but it's important to point out that they will be going to the north field. that is not a commercial terminal area. that is not where any commercial

passengers will be. from there they will board charter flights to their home countries and presumably be quarantined there. the californians of course will do their two-week quarantine instate. we understand that the goal is to have this entire process completed hopefully by tomorrow at the latest we're told by wednesday. >> as the grand princess docked in oakland, we saw many of the passengers out on their balconies, some even waving at sky 7. >> now they must wait to get off the ship. >> we spoke to a passenger who said guest services announced that right after passengers with acute medical needs get off the ship, the second group will be those in the interior cabins. the moment that over 2,000 passengers pictured and finally

their roommate and support. you have your grand daughter with you to lean on. >> she entertains us a lot. >> they entertain me. >> we did the zumba today again. even grandpa got up and did it. >> docking in the port of oakland is a victory, but not the final step. many of these people still need their luggage tags to disembark. >> we packed last night. we are ready to go. >> before disembarking the captain of the ship required all passengers to wear a mask and stay six feet apart from the person in front of them. i did ask all the passengers we interviewed today if they would go back on the cruse ship after this. the answer is yes by all of them. some of the 962 passengers who live in california will be taken to travis air force base to be quarantined. the base has hosted hundreds of

evacuees at various times since february. laura martinez is there live with the latest. >> reporter: we are still waiting for those buses to arrive. now the california residents that are not showing any signs of the virus will be bussed all the way down to southern california to a military base in miramar or here to travis air force base. once they get to a military base they will be quarantined for 14 days. this is not the first time travis is housing people for quarantine. you're looking at video from previous evacuations. the first west palm ave of evac from wuhan china. the second wave were passengers on board the diamond princess cruise ship. >> disembarking the most

medically challenged people and then california residents would be going next. they would send us to either travis or miramar. having said that, we don't know which way we're going to go. although we're from the sacramento area we would prefer travis but who knows. >> reporter: anyone who develops symptoms during their quarantine process will be transported off base to a medical facility. those that do not show signs of having the virus presumably will be released once their 14-day quarantine is over. >> now as laura mentioned some passengers on the ship are being routed to military bases in georgia and texas. melanie woodrow is live with that part of our coverage. >> reporter: we have a new development here. i want to step out of the way so

you can see a large aircraft has just taxied here onto the runway. we know that those canadian passengers are boarding buses right now. so we think it's possible we might see those buses here in a relatively short time and perhaps those passengers will be getting onto this aircraft. the passengers will never enter oakland interntional airport. they will be bussed right here onto the tarmac and immediately board chartered flights. earlier this afternoon i spoke with a woman from oklahoma who was on her 50th anniversary cruise with her husband. she says they are packed. they're waiting on luggage tags to find out where they will be flying once they're bussed here. >> we're so grateful to the city of oakland for accepting us, allowing us to be bussed and flown back closer to our home and to be quarantined and to stay well. >> reporter: once those

passengers do arrive here, they will be taken on aircraft to either texas or georgia where they will be quarantined for two weeks on a military base before they're able to go back home. it appears that the canadian passengers will likely get onto a different aircraft. we think this might be that aircraft. of course the california passengers who were getting off, they're getting on buses and being taken to two military bases in california where they will also be quarantined. we'll bring you the latest updates as soon as we have them. santa clara county has reported its first covid-19 related death. details will be released later tonight at a news conference >> reporter: as we await more details from officials about

that covid-19 related case, a number of hospitals in the area say they are ready to handle any surge in patients and that includes any that may be coming from the grand princess cruse ship. with the novel coronavirus on the minds of many, medical professionals in our community are stressing the importance of facts over fear. >> people do want to know what's going on. they're hearing about it all the time. but i think panic and fear should not be something that we should be really engaging in right now. >> reporter: yvonne moldanado. >> we have the right protective devices and equipment for health care workers and staff to protect themselves if a patient would be in the hospital here.

>> reporter: screening protocols and procedures are also in place within the santa clara county health system. good samaritan hospital has set up overflow tents outside the e.r. major hospitals have negative pressure isolation rooms which prevent germs from escaping. stanford engineers are prepared to create new rooms or an entire ward if necessary. >> transmission doesn't occur in the open air, by food or by water. so there's really no risk of these unfortunate passengers to transmit within the environment they're going to be in. >> reporter: and for any passengers or crew that end up at a local hospital, it is safe to say they will be under heavy surveillan surveillance. again, isolation will be the key.

once again taking a live look over the port of oakland. this is the vantage point from sky 7. this is where the grand princess cruse ship is now docked. to give you an idea of the timeline, it arrived about five hours ago with 19 crew members and two of the 2500 passengers having tested positive with the virus. now according to officials, those needing immediate medical care or those with preexisting

medical conditions will get off the ship first. they'll be followed by california residents who will be taken to travis air force base in fairfield quarantined for 14 days. as you can see, lots of activity on the ground with a number of buses just waiting for those passengers. >> we do believe a lot of canadians are being taken off right now. they are headed to, we believe, oakland airport where there is a chartered plane waiting to take them home. meantime, a santa clara resident has died from kroecovi. >> the person was an adult woman in her 60s. she had been receiving care at el camino hospital for several weeks. she was the first person in the county to contract the coronavirus through community exposure. >> marin county announced today its first confirmed case of covid-19. san francisco is reporting five

new cases. san mateo county has two new cases. that brings the total number of confirmed cases here in the bay area to 84. the state total stands at 122. in the east bay uc berkeley announced it will suspend most in-person classes starting tomorrow. there are no confirmed cases on campus, but they say they want to be proactive. the suspension will remain in place through spring break, march 29th. the dow jones industrial average fell 2,000 points in its worst single day since 2008. the massive selloff forced an automatic 15-minute halt in tra trading which allows traders time to pause and assess what's happening. the white house invited wall street executives to washington to discuss the response to the coronavirus oureak.nks and brok
