>> santa clara county coming together to help those affected by the coronavirus. the economic fall-out is goi st. the county already banned large gatherings. local sports teams say they've never seen anything like this. developing story in in in costa county, people are being asked to avoid large gatherings and small ones like this. the next phase of the princess. and it looks like this. passengers flying off to be quarantined for 14 days. breaking news, a student has tested positive for coronavirus leading the san francisco archdiocese to close all 90 of its schools. >> reardon high school in san francisco already announced a two week closure over the weekend. the diocese has expanded it to every school covering not just san francisco but marin and san

mateo counties. >> it goes to march 25th. thank you for joining us. >> santa clara county has two more cases bringing the total there to 45. that's the most in the state. that number is expected to continue to increase. >> public health officials in the county hope a hope a hope aa on large gatherings will help prevent the spread. >> chris has that part of the story. >> reporter: that ban goes into effect tomorrow. some community leaders are already sounding the alarm about the potential consequences. in the midst of a growing outbreak, santa clara's decision to ban all gatherings is the most sweeping preventive measure taken so far in california. at a board meeting today, county supervisors heard from regions including businesses and citizens and public.

matthew from the silicon organization shared his knowledge of the viability of small businesses especially sap center and san jose convention center who rely on foot traffic and immediate cash flow. >> what are the steps a city, state, government agency can provide support small business as they will really feel the impacts of covid-19. >> reporter: less business means less work for many hourly employees which can be disastrous for those living paycheck to paycheck in silicon valley. >> how do we pass policies to protect us now and in the future. >> reporter: and paid sick leave given more weight as people are being told to stay home if they're ill. >> we have leadership in the public sector and private sector trying to figure this out. >> reporter: that will take time many will tell you they don't have enough of. that's why san jose mayor

riccardo imposed a moratorium on those facing financial hardship due to the coronavirus. >> we have to do everything we can to keep families in their homes. the point of this eviction moratorium is to not make it worse pushing thousands out into the streets. >> reporter: the county leaders are reminded they're here to provide social services and stability for those in need. >> if you're sperexperiencing setbacks come here and we are trying to set up an additional safety net so people don't strug tool much during this crisis. >> the ban is on the books for the next three weeks but a possibility of it being extended depending what happens next with the outbreak. we're live in san jose tonight. chris nguyen, abc7 news. >> san jose county banned all large events until the end of the month. now, professional sports team

have to decide whether to cancel their games or play without a crowd. dustin has reaction from athletes as the decision looms. >> reporter: the coronavirus already prompted all the major sports leagues to close their locker rooms to the media. an even bigger change is now in effect in santa clara. >> it's concerning for the assist of everybody in the world, but california and obviously, santa clara. we have to deal with it. >> reporter: santa clara's bans of 1,000 the rest of march and including five home events. >> three in march has a serious chance of being played in front of an empty arena, an unprecedented situation for these players and coaches. >> we love playing in front of our fans. they're great to us. health comes first. we're just here to do our job. >> it would be very strange. i mean, i have obviously been in

earthquakes said they will announce changes soon. earthquakes have a game this saturday and sharks will be back in one week. in contra costa county announced community events with more than 50 people be postponed or even cancelled. >> given the level of coronavirus in our community, contra costa is shifting from strategy to communication. that means we're acknowledging to isolate sick people who may have been exposed may no longer be enough. >> there are currently nine cases in contra costa county. they have received test kits and soon be online for hospitals and clinics. >> san francisco has a ban and

san francisco is behind santa clara county and to suggest a ban attending warriors games or other large events is probably coming soon. the warriors confirm the game of los angeles against clippers will go on as scheduled and a conference call with owners to discuss the next steps for the league including the possibility of playing without fans present. >> the end of the day we have to do our jobs. it will differential feel like an open scrimmage. we have to do what we have to do. >> the teams says it's concerned for its employees and players and wiping down cleaning surfaces including every seat at each game. happening over the grand princess. leslie brinkley is live at the prt with a very long process.

leslie. >> reporter: it's turning into quite the long process. so far today, before 1:00, 269 passengers disemparked before t grand princess, most going to travis air force base and many others to lack lund air force base in texas. that's a trickle when you think there are thousands on board. >> we are completely in the dark. they haven't told us when we're getting off the ship, haven't told us where we're going. >> reporter: carolyn wright from new mexico is at her breaking point and worried about the disembarcation process showing this photo what she called the hurting of passengers not being kept 6 feet apart as recommended. >> people who have taken control of our lives are treating us like numbers. >> reporter: in this sweeping

shot of the grand princess, you can see dockside as people continue to exit the ship. passengers disembarking at 8:00 a.m. with bus-loads going to travis air force base and one woman describing the accommodation as a suite or apartment where lunch and chilled water bottles were waiting for them. she said they were told to not take pictures or video. this video is from the u.s. department of defense. the pace of disembarcation was expected to go up dramatically today. the state office of disembarcation services said 173 left the ship and 129 transported to travis and another 24 taken by ambulance to medical facilities. there were also 234 canadians who left the ship, two by ambulance and others transported a private aircraft for

repatriation. the ship docked at noon monday after navigating into san francisco bay passing under the golden gate and bay bridges. looking likely the process to get these passengers off the ship not only go into tomorrow or thursday or beyond. it's so far a fairly slow process. back in oakland, leslie brinkley, abc7 news. >> thank you. bus-loads of passengers have been arriving at the oakland airport before getting on planes to be quarantined elsewhere. melan melanie woodrow is live with that part of the story. >> reporter: we're expecting to see a couple of buses arriving any moment. the process seems much faster today. the passengers get off the buses and have the opportunity to use the port oh potties and wash their hands outside and on the planes they do. fast to us but for the passengers still on the cruise ship time is moving slowly.

as big buss with california highway patrol escorts rolled onto the tarmac at oakland international airport, officials in hazmat suits greeted disembarked passengers for the next leg of their journey. after a 15 day cruise and more days at sea these passengers are headed to a two week virus quarantine wearing masks and some stopping to take photos to document a journey many will be talking to many a while. and many heading to a plane to the mir ran mar naval station and many not wearing protection gear a sharp con tretrast to th helping them and some quarantined in georgia. some waving getting off the buses. it will continue through the week with many more passengers still on the cruise ship. >> we have not received any luggage tags yet or instructions but waiting patiently.

>> reporter: terry risheresa rod her husband were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. >> our bags are still packed and ready to go. we see people and know people are there. we see our helicopters and coast guard. gosh, we're here, we're on the ship still. >> reporter: the couple thankful for what comforts they do have, like fruit and water delivered to their room daily. hot meals. >> they're fabulous. it's great food. we just need more exercise. >> reporter: even the sound of news helicopters. >> it feels good to talk to you and your crew and just know that californians are really supporting us. >> reporter: an unlikely trip for so many that's not over yet. >> the plane just over my shoulder will be the next one to take off. theresa roberts is still on the cruise ship and hopeful she will be one of those passengers

we have breaking news out of oakland where a jury just reached a verdict in the murder trial of the man who stabbed wilson. found guilty of first-degree murder for fatally stabbig wilson in 2018 and found guilty of lying in wait and attempted murder of her sister. he pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

since he has been convicted, the insanity trial starts tomorrow. hoping to win its first ever state championship, today, district officials rejected a direct appeal by the high school coaches and players to play in tonight's championship game. the game like all district activities was cancelled because of the coronavirus even though classes at lincoln are still in session. abc7 news was there when a coach at jacob hill spoke with a district official. >> schools are still in session. if it was a big scare they would close the schools. that doesn't make sense. 2000 kids at each school in this city they can't have a basketball game. we would have the game without any fans, anything, we don't even mind traveling to go play the other team if that was possible. >> he made the appeal but the answer is no. lincoln's season is over, two

see my daughter. this is something i've dreamt of for four years, to see her walk. >> see her walk at graduation. harvard says it will make some exceptions staying on campus including students with nowhere else to go or international students who come from countries with a serious outbreak of coronavirus and therefore they couldn't go home right now. >> public health officials are urging workers to stay home if they're sick rather than spreading cokvid-19. >> many low wage workers don't get paid. >> it's hard to live with this. the state is expanding disability and unemployment benefits. companies like uber and lyft are setting up funds for drivers who get sick. the question is, is it enough? one of the best ways to stop the spread of coronavirus is stop sick people from going to work. for workers like uber drivers,

clocking in is the only way to get paid sometimes. california law requires employers to provide paid sick leave to their employees but it may not cover a long illness or 14 day quarantine. here are some new benefits. the state may now pay disability benefits to workers officially diagnosed with covid-19. for those that require to be under a 14 day quarantine due to the virus. workers may also get unemployment benefits if their hours are reduced or eliminated due to coronavirus. some other workers are getting help. ube uber, lyft and doordash announce they are providing help or those under a 14-day quarantine. the caveat, many of these special benefits won't apply unless the workers have been officially diagnosed with the disease. that's a tough one. we have seen a lot more people
