to die in the northeast. >> the national guard has been called in as a new york suburb imposes a containment order hoping to stop the spread of the virus. >> in washington state, authorities are reporting a surge in cases. the virus has now spread to at least ten long-term care facilities near seattle. >> more schools and universities are closing. harvard university is giving students five days to move out of the dorms. classes will now be held remotely. >> and at the pentagon, chairs for reporters were separated to keep people 6 feet away from each other, part of the social distancing recommendations to combat this virus. >> abc's andrew dymburt begins our coverage. he's in washington. andrew, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, and there really are no signs of the spread slowing here in the u.s. just yet. cities are taking an abundance of caution. one in particular now in containment. as cases of coronavirus continue to climb in the u.s., a cluster of covid-19 in new york state now becoming the country's first containment zone. the national guard being

deployed to a suburban community just north of new york city. >> it is a dramatic action. this is literally a matter of life and death. >> reporter: that zone of containment consisting of a one-mile radius around the young israel synagogue where dozens of people were exposed by a sickened attorney. schools and buildings with large gatherings will shut down for two weeks. most businesses and grocery stores will remain open. people will be allowed to enter and leave. >> you're not containing people. it's facilities. >> reporter: dr. anthony fauci, a top health official at the national institute of infectious diseases with a warning. >> it doesn't matter if you're in a state that has no cases or one case. you have to start taking seriously what you can do now. >> reporter: and in an effort to ease economic fears over the coronavirus, the president urging americans to stay calm. >> this was unexpected. it will go away. >> reporter: trump is proposing a possible payroll tax cut to stimulate the economy. larry kudlow, a top adviser says

the cut could last through the end of the year. >> the tax holiday is a bold move. it's a very bold move. >> reporter: but democrats and even some republicans sharp in their criticism of the president's plan. >> the administration seems to believe that the answer to any problem is another tax cut. >> reporter: and "the wall street journal" is saying that the trump administration is likely to extend the april 15th tax deadline. again, just to mitigate some of the effects here of the coronavirus on businesses and families. kenneth, mona? >> andrew there in washington, thank you. the government is reporting its third death from the virus, a woman in assisted living in sacramento county. the disease is most dangerous to the elderly. 25 of the 30 deaths in the u.s. have been at one elder care facility in washington state, and now cases have been confirmed at ten facilities near seattle. the governor has issued a new warning about a possible explosion in the number of cases. >> when something doubles every day, it gets to a very large number very quickly.

so if there are 1,000 people infected today, in seven or eight weeks, there could be 64,000 people infected in the state of washington if we don't somehow slow down this epidemic. in the next week, it would be 120,000, and the next week it would be a quarter million. >> so in response, washington state is now limiting the number of visitors at elder care facilities. and today, more drastic steps. washington's governor is expected to ban all gatherings of more than 250 people in the seattle area. >> there's growing frustration on that cruise ship docked in california. getting everyone off that ship is taking longer than expected. it will likely be tomorrow before everyone disembarks. at least 21 people on board were infected. passengers who have been evacuated say they were kept away from each other while on the ship, but they ended up being packed together in lines when they got off. they're being sent to military bases from 14 more days 14 mores

quarantine. and one executive says the coronavirus could have a bigger impact on the airline industry than 9/11. every airline carrier has announced a reduction in their flight schedule. united airlines is reporting a 70% drop in domestic demand as the virus keeps people from traveling. meanwhile, more big cities are canceling events. philadelphia has joined boston in canceling the st. patrick's day parade. the mayor asking people to avoid events with more than 5,000 people. new york city has canceled its half marathon, and the new york auto show has been postponed. in ohio, the governors recommending a ban on spectators at indoor sporting events. the ncaa says it's still deciding whether to make any changes to march madness. the virus is having a major impact on the race for president with the candidates canceling some rallies. >> it was a big night. results are still coming in from super tuesday round two, but it's clear joe biden has taken

command of the democratic primary. >> reporter: overnight, joe biden cementing himself as the front-runner in the democratic presidential race. >> it looks like we're going to have another good night. >> reporter: the former vice president surging ahead in the delegate could want after voters in six states went to the polls on many super tuesday, including idaho, mississippi, missouri and the big prize, michigan. with the majority of the votes counted overnight, biden easily winning the state. a crushing blow to senator bernie sanders who won michigan in 2016. >> this campaign is taking off, and i believe we're going to do well from this point on. >> reporter: biden's delegate count now topping 800. >> winning in mississippi, winning in missouri, and particularly a victory in michigan cuts to the heart of bernie sanders' campaign. that is a devastating blow to sanders. clearly joe biden is right now the front-runner. he's a favorite for the nomination. >> reporter: the coronavirus outbreak now forcing changes on the campaign trail. there will be no audience at sunday's debate in arizona. both candidates have canceled

events in ohio tonight. biden has also called off an event tomorrow in florida. instead, he'll give a speech on the virus. he celebrated his big wins last night in front of campaign staff only. no crowd. in the meantime, biden's confrontation with an auto worker in detroit, picking up views online. the testy exchange started when the worker claimed biden would try to confiscate guns. >> you are actively trying to diminish our second amendment right. >> shush. shush. i support the second amendment. the second amendment right now, just like right now if you yelled fire, that's not free speech. from the very beginning, i have a shotgun. my sons hunt, and guess what? you're not allowed to own any weapons. i'm not taking your gun away at all. you need a hundred rounds? >> you said you were taking our guns away. >> i did not say that. i did not say that. >> biden has picked up an

back now with reports of a looming shortage of medical masks because of the coronavirus outbreak. manufacturers haven't been able to keep up with the demand from health workers, and it may get worse. germany and south korea have now stopped exporting them. we're also following this breaking headline from overseas. the highest ranking medical official in the british government is now infected with the virus. >> health minister nadine dorries is now in self-quarantine after meeting with other lawmakers, including prime minister boris johnson. meanwhile in italy where all 60

million residents are on lockdown, hospitals are becoming overwhelmed. one doctor warns the italian medical system will collapse unless everything in the country is shut down for two weeks. more than 600 people have died in italy. president trump's former homeland security adviser is warning american hospitals could soon be overwhelmed in a similar way. >> if we don't take those steps aggressively and just apply the math of the potential growth of this virus as we've seen it in italy, we're going to see their hospital systems under very negative pressure where they have to start making some very difficult decisions about triage and patient care, and that's where you'll see them getting -- that's what i meant by that, and i think that's why we need to make sure we deliver the message that the social distancing issue and these school closures and these controversial measures, they will have an end, but there has to be some urgency to when they begin. >> while testifying on capitol hill, the director of the cdc warned that hospitals in rural areas are especially vulnerable because they have smaller staffs.

more companies are taking precautions. google is telling all its employees in north america to work from home. walmart, the nation's biggest employer says it will not penalize workers who call in sick. walmart, apple and the olive garden are among the companies updating their sick leave policy. the outbreak is also affecting how consumers shop, and what we pay for everyday items. several major companies are changing how they do business. >> reporter: this morning, a minor positive for consumers as the coronavirus spreads. gas prices are down 15% from last year. and the virus is expected to drive them down even further. the current national average is $2.34 a gallon. one analyst now predicts prices could fall below $2 by the end of this month. the reason for the decline, less demand as people stay indoors. and an oil price war between saudi arabia and russia. the outbreak is forcing the most recognizable companies in america to make changes. target is wiping down checkout lanes and touch screens every 30

that's all daniela needs to rule her day. back now with big changes coming to las vegas back now with big changes coming to las vegas because of the coronavirus outbreak. beginning sunday, mgm resort will be closing buffets at seven locations. the decision will be reviewed on a weekly basis. there are new questions this morning about testing people for the virus. >> vice president mike pence has promised 4 million testing kits by the end of the week. but even as some people near seattle and denver are seeing the first drive through testing facilities, more potential delays are being reported. >> reporter: this morning, a plea from doctors as they face a surge in potential coronavirus cases. >> we really have to up our level of testing. >> we are certainly worried about having enough test kits. >> we don't know where it is. that's a problem. that's a failure in testing. >> reporter: health officials across the country reporting a shortage of tests despite promises from the federal

government. >> over a million tests are out. thanks to the diligent work of the cdc and hhs. >> when people need a test, they can get a test. >> reporter: now states are claiming those promises are empty. >> we were promised that tests would be available, a million of them, by the end of the week. they are still nowhere to be found. >> reporter: meanwhile, new concerns that even if labs do have the tests, they don't necessarily have the proper materials to prepare the samples. >> the test kits don't include all the components to test. that's the disconnect. >> reporter: according to the cdc, the test is a simple nose swab that has already been done on nearly 7,000 people, and that number is expected to jump to nearly 500,000 this week. >> the availability of testing in the last two days is getting us where we need to be. >> the call the doctor's office, so that you don't just walk right in, follow their infection

control procedures for doing that, and then they will decide working with you whether a test is appropriate to be done. >> reporter: still doctors say they're faced with yet another computation, restrictive guidelines on who is eligible for testing. the cdc advises that only a small group of people should be tested, people who have more severe symptoms like fever and difficulty breathing, those who have come into close contact with someone who has the virus, and those who have traveled to an affected area. a major concern, according to the man who headed up the ebola response during the obama administration. >> there is simply no reason, none, why the united states lags behind nations like south korea and singapore in protecting its people. >> and later this morning, the health secretary, alex azar, will be on "good morning america" answering questions about the virus response here in the u.s. seven members of congress are now self-quarantined after being exposed to other people who have tested positive. congressman matt gaetz said he

and travelers who traveled through the airport and worried about potential exposure when they interacted with tsa employees. several passengers we spoke to last night were unaware about the issue. >> i did not know that. >> what do you make of that news? >> that's a little scary. i'm glad to get out of california and back to denver. >> i'm just finding out now. >> what do you make of that news? >> it is pretty scary. >> in a statement released by sjc last night they are open for business as normal but no enhanced screening practices at the airport at those tsa stations where you have to pass through security. we also don't know if you can expect longer wait times at the airport given the sheer number of tsa employees who now have to be home and quarantined. now, the three of employees tested positive for coronavirus. so many more unanswered
