express lane construction san mateo 101 project and you can expect lane closures between 380 and south san francisco and whipple avenue and redwood city. reggie and kumasi. obviously, a lot of concern over what is happening with covid-19, especially when it comes to the airport. now we're finding out three people who have worked at the airport have been exposed. >> julian glover is joining us with more on this. julian? >> good morning, guys. we also want to talk about the overall impact that cases of the coronavirus cases with the three tsa workers testing positive has on air travel as a whole. the international air transportation association projecting a $113 billion loss to the airline industry because of fears of the coronavirus. people are worried about catching it and that means fewer passengers in the air flying and taking flights. some economists comparing the

hit the airline industry is about to take. this 40% dip in flights. they're comparing that to what we've seen after 9/11. we've seen picture after picture of half-empty flights posted on social media. now the airline industry is responding by drastically reducing the number of flights taking off. american airlines the largest airline cutting international flights by 10% this summer and dropping 7.5% those domestic flights. united and delta airlines both plan on cutting international flights by at least 20% by april and cut those domestic flights by at least 10%. we are hearing that airlines are trying to encourage travel by giving more flexibility when it comes to temporarily waiving change fees and we're also hearing some airlines are also dropping those cancellations fees for particular months, specifically march and april. again, trying to encourage air travel. again, all of this in response to passengers' fears about the coronavirus and those fears just confirmed as people hear of

those three tsa workers who have now tested positive for coronavirus here at mineta san jose international airport. more on that part of the story coming up in just a half hour. reporting live out of sjc this morning, julian glover. >> thank you. this more than 1,000 passengers are on the "grand princess" cruise ship. >> the ship has been docked at the port of oakland since monday. as of last night, about 1,400 passengers have gotten off of the ship. some people are showing mild symptoms of coronavirus. those who are not sick enough to need hospital care but still may be contagious are being quarantined in hotels. the hotels are secure and segregated from the general public. passengers from california who apear healthy were taken to travis air force base for quarantine. as many as 24 passengers housed in pacific grove. state health department says the

passengers do have mild symptoms but it's not clear if they've c contracted covid-19. the passengers will not be allowed to interact with other guests, employees or with the public. the san jose archdiocese is closing 90 schools in san mateo and marine counties for the next two weeks because a student and two parents tested positive for covid-19. no word if they're related but the student attends rirordan high school. teachers will post class work online so students can keep learning. >> we received other messages from band that we had a two-hour window to go one door to retrieve any instruments left there. >> more schools will start closing tomorrow going through march 25th. governor newsom now says 157 californians testing positive for covid-19. the state is ramping up its

ability to potentially test thousands of people for the virus. >> we have our state labs, 18 that are currently conducting tests. tests within that system. you have two hospitals in the state that are currently conducting tests and we have quest that is conducting tests. >> quest is the first commercial lab to offer testing. in two weeks california labs will be able to process more than 5,000 covid-19 tests per day. president trump will meet with wall street executives to discuss the economic concerns around coronavirus. andrew is in washington with more on that and the new containment zone et up near new york city. >> cities are taking an abundance of caution. one in particular is now in containment. as cases of coronavirus continue to climb in the u.s., a cluster in new york state now becoming the country's first containment zone. the national guard being

deployed to a suburban community just north of new york city. >> it is a dramatic action. this is a matter of life and death. >> reporter: that zone consi consisting of a one-mile radiance around the synagogue where dozens of people were sickened by an attorney. schools and businesses will shut down for two weeks and most businesses and grocery stores will remain open and people will be allowed to enter and leave. dr. anthony fauci with a warning. >> it doesn't matter if you're in a state that has no cases or one case. you have to start taking seriously what you can do now. >> reporter: in an effort to ease economic fears over the coronavirus, the president urging americans to stay calm. >> this was unexpected. it will go away. >> reporter: trump is proposing a possible payroll tax cut to stimulate the economy. "wall street journal" was reporting the trump administration is also likely to extend the april 15th tax

the mid-50s and even upper and 52 in san carlos. here's a look and the difference between yesterday and today. notice the flag it's not blowing off shore as intently as it was yesterday. we'll see probably just as much if not a little more sunshine and temperatures will be about the same today, which is nice for outdoor activities. limited breezes on the bay. pollen problems if you have them, they're continuing and showers that are possible on the light side down in the south bay. let's go up to the north bay. 52 at 9:00. nice, quick, run up to 67 at 1:00 and then at 3:00 about 70 degrees. we'll see the most sunshine across the north bay. for the east bay, stuck in the mid50s through 9:00 and mainly sunny conditions as we head into the afternoon hours and from noon all the way through at least 5:00. in san francisco, we'll definitely see more sunshine than yesterday and temperature a little bit cooler because we don't have the off shore prebre.

all others are at home in quarantine. more than 1,000 passengers on "grand princess" cruise ship are sti . they are hoping to get off the ship today. some of the princess cruis passengers landing in oakland. passengers from california will be quarantined at travis air force base and mirimar in san diego. number four, there are at least now 1,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the u.s. the cdc is sending millions more testing kits to labs across the country. number five. here is a look at weather. we had some rain reach the ground. measurable. couple hundreds of an inch and now light rain falling in the south bay. and number six. i should have had the banner say smooth ride. that is what you're going to experience across the bay area right now. live look at the toll plaza.

no metering lights yet and take you seven minutes to get into san francisco. the next democratic debate this sunday will not have a live audience because of coronavirus fears. former vice president joe biden widened his lead ahead of senator bernie sanders after that mini super tuesday yesterday. well because of coronavirus, santa clara county is banning any event of 1,000 people or more starting today. >> that is putting the san jose sharks, earthquakes and stanford university in a unique position. play in an empty arena or find a different city to play in. we talked to people who are trying to get used to playing without any fans in the stands. >> i hope that's not going to be the case, but we'll have to see what happens. it definitely would be a weird feeling if that happens. we'll see. >> there is still some time to figure this out. the sharks don't have a home game until next thursday. stanford is supposed to host the opening round of the ncaa

women's tournament next friday. the earthquakes don't have a home game until next saturday. happening today, the nba will hold a conference call with the owners of the warriors and other teams to discuss the next step for the leagues in the wake of coronavirus. this could possibly include playing without fans. the warriors played last night against the clippers at chase center and it's concerned for employees, fans and players and will follow the nba's guidance. cleaning staff is wiping down surfaces including wiping down every seat before every game. abc 7 news was on uc berkeley's campus yesterday, the first day that all of its classes switched to an online format instead of in person. people were still there, as you can see. the suspension will remain in place through spring break in a few weeks. david louis found similar changes in the south bay. >> reporter: students at santa clara university leave their dorms and head home. in a few days, they'll get

online to resume their classes. she has a ticket to fly home to honolulu on thursday. >> the main concern is us going somewhere that is safe and somewhere that we feel comfortable because there is so much uncertainty here. >> reporter: they'll zuz zoom. students say they're comfortable with it but as engaged with their faculty as they are in the classroom? >> you can mute the zoom call if you want to and zone out a little bit. but, we'll just see. i think it depends from student to student. >> reporter: at san jose state the campus of nearly 36,000 students is quiet while trying to take a class for teaching her class online. she's familiar with zoom. >> i have to make the switch by monday morning. i need to be 9:00 a.m. teaching my class online and hopefully live because i do want to interact with the students. >> freshman david hong isn't sure how quickly faculty will adapt to distant learning.

this is abc 7 mornings. >> updated the rainfall deficit for the rain year. we're more than ten inches in the hole in oakland and san francisco. more than a foot in santa rosa. nearly eight in san jose a a a in livermore. this is the european model the one doing the best forecasting. the drought in 2020. look what it does saturday, sunday and monday. brings an atmospheric river to us. tries to bring us upwards to an inch and inch and a quarter in all the areas you see in green which is outside of the north bay which receives the least amount of rain which gives me a little bit of pause.

the north bay always gets more rain. well, most of the time. we'll keep an eye on this and we'll get a greater idea when the high resolution models pick it up in the next day or so. here's reggie. from 7 on your side, grandparents are the latest targets of scammers trying to seize on the coronavirus headlines. the better business bureau has received its first report of a scam with a coronavirus twist. >> there's a long-term scam where somebody calls and says, oh, i'm with your granddaughter or grandson and he or she are very sick and we need some money to get this care and the grandparents so worried that they'll often fall for this. >> it's not a very sophisticated scam but laurie wilson says if you get a call like this. call your grandchild yourself or call their parents and see if the grandchild is actually okay. well, as you heard earlier, harvard and other colleges are ordering students to vacate the dorms by the end of the week

because of coronavirus. there are no classes at harvard but boston is on alert after nearly three dozen people who attended a conference in the city tested positive. harvard will conduct online classes for the rest of the semester. the mother was scrambling to find flights homes. the news has been really hard on her daughter, who's president of an a cappella group. >> she is devastated and i think every, i think it is especially hard on the seniors. as a parent, it is devastating and crushing to me that i might not see my daughter, you know, this is something i dreamt of for four years to see her walk. >> harvard says it will make some exceptions for students with no where else to go and for international students. that is something that you don't think about. graduation ceremonies and just these moments that will change. >> that would be really tough. but what can these schools do?

julian? >> putting this all into perspective, it was just a couple months ago that we were talking about enhanced screening practices screened at bay area airports and we should have figured it would only be a matter of time for some of the airport employees to be infected with the virus themselves. that's the reality this morning here at mineta san jose international airport. three workers testing positive and all of their co-workers they came in contact with now being quarantined at home for 14 days. still so many questions unanswered this morning. when did those employees test positive for the virus and on what days were they working? did they come in contact with any passengers and we also want to know how many employees are under that quarantine. this morning i looked at sjc facebook page and dozens of comments from people who traveled through the airport now concerned about their safety and worried about potential exposure when they interacted with tsa employees. i spoke with a woman headed to a medical conference in denver still going on as planned.

are still onboard and others had to wait on charter buss for a long time before they could get out of here. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield joins us live at the port of oakland where that ship is still docked. amy? >> hi, reggie. yeah, the passengers are really getting tired of this. passengers who are still onboard tell us that the food has really gone down hill. they say it's cold, it's hardly edible. they are really ready to get off the ship and they are hoping today is the day and there are still people on the ship. the unloading process has been a slow one. passengers describe getting off the ship just to wait for hours on buses and as officials screen everyone and then decide where they need to go. they still have 1,016 passengers onoard who hope to be unloaded today. we talked to some of them and it sounds like their patience is running out. >> this has been the most tedious day. your kind of reach a point where you're just ready to get things

over with. you know, kind of a little bit antsy. let's get off the boat and start the 14 days, two weeks of isolation. >> someone jokingly said last week or when we started this, well, maybe you'll get home by april fool's day and i laughed. but, now, that's looking as a possibility. >> well, most of the passengers are being taken to military bases for a two-week quarantine. april fool's day is in three weeks, she might make it. about two dozen passengers who have left the ship, well, they had mild symptoms so they are being taken to a state beach in pacific grove near monterrey. a lot of logistics for everyone to deal with. the ship's crew is still onboard and will stay there. they're going to be treated and quarantined on ship. reporting live in oakland, amy

hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you, amy. there are now more than 100 people with coronavirus in the bay area, that includes presumptive cases and nonresidents being treated here. napa county hasn't had any of its actual residents treat positive, but it treating patients. santa clara county as you can see on this map, 45 cases and that is the most in the state. los angeles county comes in next with 20. in contra costa county the board of supervisors declared a local emergency. health officials are recommending a community event with more than 50 people be postponed or canceled. >> given the level of coronavirus in our county, shifting from containment to mitigation. that means we're acknowledging that our efforts to isolate people and quarantine people who may have been exposed may no longer be enough. >> there are currently nine coronavirus cases in contra costa county. the county health lab has received 1,000 test kits.

two commercial labs will soon be online to provide testing for hospitals and the clinics in the county. san francisco already has a two-week ban on events with more than 500 people at city-owned buildings. but that could soon expand to other public events. supervis supervis supervisor aaron suggests a ban on attending warriors or other events is coming soon. little behind santa clara county which announced the ban on events with more than 1,000 people. businesses are feeling the effects of coronavirus. >> earlier this week mayor london breed announced a ban of people at city-owned buildings. they say it's hurting them in ways that they haven't seen since 9/11. >> really the ones that are being impacted the most are my employees. so, you know, they're going to lose shifts and income and everybody's kind of nervous and anxious right now to know how that is going to pan out.

>> mayor breed says the city is working on ways to relieve some of the economic strain, including strategies around taxes and financial support. san jose city council has taken the first step towards a moratorium on evictions if people can't pay their rent because of coronavirus. that will be in effect for at least 30 days but the council could extend it. the council has to hold a second vote before that ban is official. >> we have to do everything we can to be able to keep families in their homes. so, the point of this eviction moratorium is to ensure that we don't make a crisis worse by pushing thousands of families out in the street. >> the mayor emphasized this is not an excuse for people to stop paying their rent. official documentation will be required showing a loss of income. next week, the council will consider adding small to the c to. converted its garage to a drive through. where they are testing employees who might have been exposed to the coronavirus. today, washington state's

governor will announce a ban on community gatherings of 250 people or more in the seattle area to try to stop the spread. i'm surprised this didn't come earlier. that announcement is expected to target sporting events and entertainment gatherings and schools and workplaces are not expected to be included. you may have more time to file your taxes this year, according to "wall street journal" the trump administration is considering extending the tax deadline past april this is an effort to mitigate the effects on households and businesses but no decision has been made yet and it's not clear when the new deadline would be. super tuesday round two delivers more delegates for joe biden but even he and bernie sanders can't avoid the impact of coronavirus. the final act of harvey weinstein's rape trial begins today. the long prison sentence he faces. a big break for for for wildfire victims. ere. let's talk about what's going on weather wise.

i have live doppler 7 dialed up to show you that area of low pressure down to our south. opening up and weakening, but still the possibility of showers and even thunderstorms as far north as like monterey today. as far as temperatures, the farther north you go, the cooler you are. low to mid-40s through the north bay and vallejo 52 to 54. little milder there. and more mid-50s throughout the bay shore. 57 right now in san francisco and 58 in san jose and even low to mid-50s in the east bay valley. most milder this morning. look at walnut creek where it's dry and 53 degrees as we look south on 680 and here's driving today some sprinkles across the south bay. we already had some during the overnight hours. don't be surprised if you run into a few wet spots during the early morning commute. let's talk about some neighborhoods and we'll jump into the peninsula. we're in the 50s through 9:00. notice unlike yesterday, we had
