the vice president just revealed more information on "gma" on why europe. >> the reality two weeks ago less and now 12,000 cases in italy, george. we have tens of thousands of people that travel from the united states to europe every day. 70% of new cases in the world were in europe and when we looked yesterday at what was then the 35 states where we had cases, about 30 of them could be traced to contacts with europe. >> abc 7 news reporter julian glover is live for us at mineta san jose international airport with what travelers are saying about this. julian? >> good morning, guys. we can expect mineta san jose and sfo to be quieter in the coming days on top of president trump's ban on travel and

issuing a new warning last night asking american travelers not to travel abroad in the coming days. a lot to get through as we are about to hit a spring break travel rush. this ban goes into effect at midnight tonight. that includes 26 countries in europe with the exception of the uk. favorite american tourist destinations like spain, italy, all affected. after the primetime address it was clear this does not apply to american citizens who have been screened before entering the country only for nationas. a statement from homeland security says legal permanent residents and immediately fam f members will be allowed back into the country. catching so many travelers off guard. >> mass exodus on the flight, basically. >> my phone started beeping and then i saw some of the other passengers get up and go to the front and, so, i called my fiance and he said trump just

announced the ban. >> the president also released clarification after his primetime address that the travel ban from europe does not affect cargo, which it t tumble at the prospect of a trade freeze between the u.s. and europe. still, we know airlines are going to be hit so severely by this latest travel restrictions. reporting live here in san jose this morning, julian glover, abc 7 news. the coronavirus is now affecting the nba. the league has suspended the season after a utah jazz player tested positive for covid-19. >> the governor is calling for large gatherings to be postponed or even canceled. amy? >> not just the nba, kumasi. it's all, the chase center. the brand-new chase center is going to sit very quiet for a while. right now just says welcome to chase center but we have been watching that ticker advertise all the concerts that are booked

for this place that are coming up that sound so fun and we can't help but wonder, billie eilish will it happen? when will these concerts regime? it's so sad and to think what a bummer to think about this place sitting here empty. san francisco's mayor made the first move. she banned all gatherings with 1,000 people or more and the nba was next suspending its season because a player tested positive for covid-19 and then last night a state-wide policy. all nonessential gatherings that have more than 250 people should be canceled. or at least postponed until ten. now, they're saying that smaller gatherings are permitted if you keep a social distance of six feet between people. so, that makes for an awkward dinner party. sounds like we all just need to stay home this weekend and just

watch abc 7. no word yet on how long the nba season is going to be off. they have six teams that are now under quarantine because that one player, reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. oakland is banning large gatherings and events. >> that includes concerts at the fox theater and oakland convention center. the oakland arena announced it's postponing concerts. the indoor football team will play its first games without fans. in the south bay san jose sharks say all games for the rest of the month will be closed to fans. the three games will be played as scheduled and broadcast on tv, radio and online. the nhl plans to evaluate their options and have a decision today on how the league is going to move forward. san jose barracuda games will also be played this month.

fans will get a credit or refund. the earthquake soccer club is a future date has not been set. stanford confirmed two additional cases of coronavirus one from stanford medicine and another one from the main unives who live on campus to leave as soon as it is over. school officials say it's not an order, but just a firm recommendation. happening today, we're expecting more information on the three maneta tsa agents who tested positive for coronavirus. abc 7 news learned that they're being treated while 42 other tsa agents that they came in contact with are staying home from work. yesterday the airport said it had no intentions to close, even if the workers came in contact with travelers. san jose mayor will join airport officials for a briefing at 10:30. answers to a lot of questions you might have about coronavirus. it's on our website

the things to know this morning. number one, the u.s. is suspending most travel from europe starting at midnight because of coronavirus. 26 countries and american citizens, permanent residents and their families are exempt. the nba suspended its season until further notice after rudy gobert tested positive for coronavirus. it came moments and that is him touching everything after joking about coronavirus on monday. number three. san francisco, oakland and santa clara county are banning all events with more than 1,000 people. the impact means cancellations of things like concerts, shows, more. you can find an updated list on our website. governor newsom is now recommending large gatherings of 250 or more people be canceled across the state. the state's public health experts say nonessential gatherings should be postponed

or canceled until at least the end of the month. >> our warmest day moving forward because winter returns this weekend. enjoy these temperatures that range from 69 in san francisco to 80 today in santa rosa. 7 to 16 degrees warmer than arg. >> and number six. no problems on the road right now. we are showing you here a live look at san rafael, 101 there. great time to head out the door if you're thinking about leaving a little earlier. >> number seven, b.a.r.t. is expected to talk about its drastic drop in ridership at its meeting today as more people are staying home because of coronavirus precautions. leaders are hoping to ask for emergency financial assistance. the a's and giants are working on alternative arrangements for their bay area possibly about playing in arizona. the home game scheduled for march 24th at oracle park is now canceled. the giants say, quote, we're in the process of working with major league baseball and the a's to finalize alternative

arrangements and nothing is more important that the health and safety of our community and adhere to any government directives and on all alternative arrangements to ensure the health of our fans. coronavirus worries are spreading everywhere especially with travel on cruise ships given quarantine boats including the "grand princess" here in oakland. now they're thinking about denying the page over the age of 70 unless cleared by a doctor. the cruise line industry association is asking the white house to review the policy. if it's approved, the industry group could screen out passengers with underlying medical conditions or other chronic illnesses. those guidelines follow a u.s. recent state department warning for cruise ship travel. cruise ships are still docking at the port of san francisco. six are scheduled to arrive before the end of the month. port officials say the cruise terminal is sanitized and disinfected after every docking. we are awaiting the opening bell this morning that happens at 6:30. yesterday the dow plunged yet

again ending the 11-year-long bull market, the longest ever. socks are in for another volatile day. both global and u.s. futures plummeted this morning. if you just look over the past four weeks, the dow index has lost 20% from its record high. overall, the dow and the s&p 500 have wiped out more than $5 trillion in value in just the last couple of weeks. nonprofit groups are facing a downturn of their own from having to cancel fund-raising events under the new coronavirus guidelines. >> david louis shows us some examples and the financial stress it will create. >> these are no longer needed after silicon valley canceled its biggest event of the year. fills with 600 to 700 people who support its effort to create affordable housing and help the homeless. sponsor pledges of $320 million in limbo.

>> we have a lot of people come that are sort of new and never realized that there was such an industry or such a movement around housing that's affordable. and so we get a lot of new people who moved to make a donation on the day of. >> reporter: popular cherry blossom festival has been canceled. postpone events including the rotary club of san jose and artspan. okizu sponsors summer camps for families dealing with childhood cancer. allows them to send 400 kids to the camp cost free. >> we're hoping we can do it later, if not we're hoping the generosity of our donors which has been so great and so consistent will come through. >> reporter: nonprofits must make up the lost revenue or reschedule events. a dip in the economy because of the coronavirus and might reduce support. >> let's hope that

organizations, businesses do the right thing to keep nonprofits operating. in the short term and then we have to look for longerterm solutions. >> reporter: the party favors will be sent to event sponsors to remind them that their support is still needed. in san jose, david louie. >> one of the nonprofits in that piece is the nonprofit that i was supposed to be doing the emceeing for along with dan noyes this weekend. i know how important that event is to them every year and i am super disappointed they have to postpone it. >> it leaves so much up in the air. >> they really rely on it. hopefully, mike, you do a lot of these events, too. better day coming forward and people will be more generous. >> hopefully people won't forget because they don't attend and give generously like they always do. let's talk about what is going on weather wise. thick fog up in the north bay and sliding south on 101. the winds are. let me show you the wind flow.

this is not going to stay all in the north bay. it's going to slide down both sides of the bay shore and maybe even make it down to the dum barton bridge. you can see it's definitely starting to take over the bay bridge as we look from the east bay hills. this is going to be a morning event by the afternoon hours. sunshine and warmest temperatures today and tomorrow. un sw possible as w get deeper into that wet weather. mid to upper 60s along the coast into san francisco and low to mid-70s around the bay and upper 60s to near 80 inland. tonight a lot like this morning. fog in the same general areas. here we are with future radar. you can see saturday starts off quiet and wetter and wetter into the afternoon. a little bit of a lull saturday night into sunday morning and sunday it keeps getting wetter, wetter and wetter. here's one model's show of how much rain and if you're in the blue, you get less than an inch. in if you're in the green, more

sunday. look at this, another 0.75. drive through coronavirus testing is coming to kaiser says it will also have drive-through testing in redwood city and in san jose. tom hanks revealed he and his wife, rita wilson are infected with coronavirus. in a tweet he said they felt a bit tired like they had colds with body aches. they got tested and those results came back positive. they're in australia right now where he's about to start shooting a movie. hanks says they'll stay isolated for as long as needed. both hanks and wilson are 63. >> i think when they both got coronavirus yesterday that sent a shock through our country. that is someone we all know. >> how they describe it. we thought we had a cold and here we are. >> yeah, so, we're wishing them

weekend. fog pretty thick in the north bay and santa south. also if you look at the wind flow so this dense fog and the low visibility that it creates for the morning commute will blanket a lot of things like it's starting to do the bay bridge. i was looking at our emeryville camera. you can't see anything on it. as you head towards the bay bridge, visibility will change rather rapidly. cooler 44 to 48 degrees and temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s along the coast while the rest of us hit 66 to 67 and 71 to 74 at 4:00. our warmest day moving forward. talk about highs in the 50s. >> check this out on our map here. we only have a couple slow spots coming out of tracy for super commuterers there and slow down at the bay bridge toll plaza.

positive. they were about to face oklahoma city thunder and fans were told to leave that the game would not be played because one of their players tested positive for covid-19 and the nba called off the nba season for now. no word on how long the season will be on hold. >> it's easier to call it off now and put it back on later than to, you know, err on the side of caution for sure. >> it's hard. this is their first season here. and it's too bad that it went the way it did. >> the player who is infected, rudy gobert he had just joked about the illness on monday touching all the microphones and reporter recorders after giving interviews to the media. he is reportedly feeling okay. he was strong enough that he was planning to play but now the jazz and teams that they played over the past ten days will go into quarantine. that's the pistons, the knicks, the celtics, the cavs and the raptors all those teams now in

quarantine. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. ncaa says its basketball tournaments will be played as scheduled, but no fans will attend the games. the decision affects both the ncaa division i and men's tournaments. essential staff, media and infamily members connecting to participating teams. we expect to find out today whether the state high school basketball championships will even happen. the california interscholastic federation says it will reveal more at 9:00 this morning. the games are scheduled for tomorrow and saturday at golden one center in sacramento. thousands more coronavirus cases sprouting across the world are also forcing president trump to double down on travel restrictions. >> and then he's also working with lawmakers to provide medical and financial relief. abc news reporter andrew dymburt has more on the emergency efforts. >> so much has changed overnight. this morning the forecast on coronavirus so much different

than it was just a day ago as communities are grappling with the crippling effects of the outbreak. a country in crisis. >> i have decided to take several strong but necessary actions to protect the health and well being of all americans. >> here in the u.s. and around the world, coronavirus now a global pandemic. the first in a decade, according to the world health organization. the death toll at home and abroad rising. president trump addressing the nation, instituting more sweeping travel restriction. flights from europe to the united states banned for the next 30 days with few exceptions. >> anything coming from europe to the united states is what we are discussing. >> reporter: as more americans in desperate need covid-19 testing and supplies they will waive all co-payments for all coronavirus treatments. the white house also promising to take emergency action to give workers financial relief, including deferring tax payments for people and businesses. he also called on congress to offer a payroll tax cut.

as for president trump's pay roll tax proposal that has strong opposition from both parties on capitol hill. andrew dymburt, abc news, washington. in developments, governor newsom is now recommending that large gatherings of people, more than 250 be canceled across the state. changing our actions for a short period of time will help save the lives of one or more people you know. the state health experts say nonessential gatherings should be postponed or canceled until the end of the month. the policy marks the first time the state issued a request for california residents to adopt social distancing measures. a san francisco elementary school is closed for two weeks. four students and some of their family are being tested for the virus. according to sfuusd, the students at lake shore elementary near lake merced showed respiratory symptoms. other students and staff are asked to self-quarantine for at least two weeks. nearby lowell high school is

also closed until further notice. expected to meet with health officials to go over next steps. frustration is mounting for the quarantine passengers who are still aboard the "grand princess" cruise ship. the governor and the mayor were hopeful that this whole process would take two or three days but today is day four. officials haven't said how many passengers are still on the ship, but one passenger tells abc 7 news she and her husband disembarked and were on a bus to leave when they were told to get back on the ship. she says they were told that the wrong group was called. >> it was upsetting. i got a little upset. laush lost it for a little bit. i'm fip now. the government people said it was the ship's fault. the ship's people said it was the government's fault. >> after nine hours when they were originally called, they were finally able to get on a plane and go to atlanta. santa clara county says it has three new cases of covid-19.

two students at two separate high schools were possibly exposed to coronavirus. but thetrict'tsing schools just yet and that's because the potential exposures happened off campus. >> we're following the direction of the alameda county health department and our public health team and they advised us we do not need to close our schools. >> neither of the students has tested positive. both are self-quarantined. banning large events in an effort to stop the spread. b.a.r.t.'s board is expected to talk about a big dip in ridership. ridership was down 30% on tuesday compared to two weeks ago. as more people stay home from coronavirus precautions, b.a.r.t. leaders say it means losses of more than 100,000 passengers. that drop in passengers means major drops in money. >> absolutely depends on hour ridership. our fares, you know, directly going back into our operating

that gives you an idea of what we're dealing with this morning. let's look at your commute planner and that is my biggest issues the areas of really thick fog for the morning commute. cooler to warmer as we head through this morning to the afternoon. light breezes if you're out on the bay. let's take a look at some neighborhood temperatures and we'll start with some fog encroaching upon the peninsula, especially along the coast. as you head closer to san bruno and san mateo. temperatures in the mid to upper 40s here and mid to upper 40s everywhere. oakland and san jose little warmer with los gatos at 52 and antioch also 52. here's a look at the north bay where the fog will be dominant until 7:00 and mid to upper 70s during the afternoon hours. we'll have a slight off shore breeze during the afternoon. that's what is going to make today even warmer than the past couple of days. so, we're 48 in the east bay. 52 at 9:00. patchy fog, especially the closer you are to the maze. and then 71 with sunshine this

the car burglary rate in the bay area. fremont detectives spending the past week investigating crime rings. they have found multiple levels of criminal organizations selling thousands of dollars in merchandise overseas. fremont chief of police and santa clara prosecutors will share full details at today's press conference at 3:30. new developments in the ongoing dispute over access to a beach in san mateo county. rejected a lawsuit aimed at making martin's beach public property. according to the chronicle the group friends of martin's beach argued the family who owned the beach made it public in the 1930s by posting a billboard nearby and allowing people to use it. the state's high court unanimously denied reviewing the case yesterday. however, a lawsuit in the california coastal commission file is still pending. in the south bay a ribbon cutting showed just how the government is practicing social distancing to help stop the spread of coronavirus.
