18 new cases of coronavirus for a total of 66. all schools are closed starting monday reopening april 6th, including before and after school programs. >> we have learned public schools will close monday. the 49ers will stop operations at levi stadium. san jose's tech museum is closing and the california academy of sciences in san francisco. the governor issued a new executive order today. >> directive is effective for the rest of this month. we will extend it as necessary. it's likely it will be extended. >> the executive order removes the waiting period for unemployment and disability insurance for californians who lose work as a result of the outbreak. the state tax filing deadline has been extended by those

affected. president trump is considering a ban to california if the infection remains out of control. the march madness have been cancelled. san francisco's decision to shut all schools is sinking in for tens of thousands of families. >> jr, just yesterday the city said it would not close schools. give us an idea why the change here. >> reporter: there's certainly are a number of reasons, but they said today they want to be ahead of the curve and the fact they have dealt with four students over the last 24 hours who have some questionable health conditions was enough for them to say no school come monday. >> this is not business as usual. >> reporter: the superintendent of san francisco schools announcing a huge decision on thursday to close all schools in the district starting monday. all this due to concerns over the coronavirus. >> it is likely that we will see

many more covid-19 cases in the coming weeks and months. this will require a measured sustained response. >> reporter: 24 hours ago the district was responding to health concerns at lakeshore elementary school where four students came down with pneumonia all being test ned fo the coronavirus. the fourth grade teacher said kids and instructors are staying home. >> our attendance has been decreasing. the attendance is way low. >> reporter: we sasked the superintendent what factors will determine if school will start again after three weeks. >> at this point we can't answer that. we'll be working towards that developing what that looks like. >> reporter: a lot of families make summer plans months sometimes years in advance. we asked the school district what does this mean? does this mean a longer school

year? they said at this point they don't know. reporting live in san francisco, abc 7 news. >> thank you. access to coronavirus tests continue to be a major problem here in the bay area and across california and the country. the governor and mayor say tonight that they are working on local solutions to that problem. kate larson is live at the french campus in san francisco with the story. >> reporter: the school is testing only select patients in the parking lot across the street from us, but most people who feel they need a coronavirus test still cannot get it and today the governor said that the issue surrounding the testing kits, he's surprised it's not a bigger part of our national conversation. >> we don't know when we're going to get test kits. >> reporter: teresa was on the grand princess and is now

quarantined. they still haven't gotten tested. >> so i've spoke to somebody not more than five minutes ago and i said are we getting any more kits and she said all we're doing right now is temperatures and meals. that doesn't seem like anybody has any answers. a lot of confusion and a lot of people are upset. >> reporter: in the bay area some patients who have double medical clearance from a primary care doctor and infectious disease specialist are getting tested for coronavirus at the campus in san francisco. patients pull up and get swabbed in their cars by medical personnel who are working out of a tent in the parking lot, but not everyone is invited to the drive-thru. >> i have a fever and a cough. i've had it for over eight days now rr now. >> reporter: i spoke on the phone to a patient who says they has been refuse tod to be teste for the virus.

>> i asked to be tested today and the answer was no. >> we need to focus on these tests. >> reporter: the governor says california has more than 8,000 testing kits, but the kits are incomplete which is slowing down procesing. >> i think it's in line with these tests you're going to the store and purchasing a printer, but forgetting to purchase the ink. >> reporter: the mayor said the cdc should be in a better place by now with enough testing kits. >> we have some of the most incredible health care professionals in the world. we're not going to wait around for the federal government to do what they should have done a long time ago. >> reporter: here's what the governor says we're doing about it. he says he hopes to have new centralized california testing locations open by next week.

he expects two more quest labs to be online by march which will increase testing capacity by 5,000 tests a day. stanford and ucla are testing, but he hopes uc davis and irvine are testing. he is working to ramp up that capacity and the local universities and officials here in the bay area. abc 7 news. >> thanks. four san jose firefighters have tested positive for the coronavirus. this comes after three tsa agents fell ill. we are joined live tonight with an update. chris. >> reporter: employees with both organizations are having to work overtime to cover the shifts of their colleagues have been placed in quarantine.

the coronavirus is now hitting close to home for members of the san jose fire department. we're realizing that every call we going on could be a covid-19 exposure. >> reporter: at least four firefighters have tested positive for covid-19 and two others are in isolation at home. the firefighters have multiple family members who tested positive. >> we are taking steps to reduce the spread in our community by modifying programs and by proactively cancelling events. >> reporter: nearly 80 firefighters have at one point been in quarantine due to documented exposures. the assistant chief said it's not clear where the firefighters contracted 9 the illness. >> because they eat together and train together they are at risk for possible exposure. >> reporter: at san jose

international airport three tsa agents are at home after being diagnosed with covid-19. the agency releasing information about their last known interactions with colleagues and the public as february 21st, february 26th and march 2nd. 40 tsa agents are in self quarantine. >> what we know about what works in preventing the spread of this disease is testing and contact to find out who had contact with that person. >> reporter: officials are urging the federal government to immediately provide more coronavirus test kits to santa clara county. >> please get us the kits that we need to test our community so we're not only able to be responsive, but we can be informed. >> reporter: those on the front lines bracing for the unknown.a fire station visits and nonessential business has been suspended. live in san jose, abc 7

the stock market had its biggest drop since 1987. stocks dropped so fast there was a trading halt for the second time this week. by the closing bell it plunged more than 2,300 points or 10% of the value. the nasdaq lost 750. that puts it way over the threshold for a bear market officially ending wall street's bull market run of 11 years. the economic contact of coronavirus could cost people their jobs. others may be forced into time off. we go to that part of the story.

>> reporter: at capacity hotel g can have anywhere from 300 to 500 guests. the hotel is at 30% occupancy. >> we would normally be in the 80 percent range. >> reporter: how much is connected to coronavirus? >> probably all of it. >> reporter: the general manager says the hotel has just under 50 employees. >> as those levels change, it's going to dictate how many people will be able to work. >> reporter: the president and ceo of the hotel california san francisco, he says the greatest exactly be on different types of leaves. >> i believe there are hotels that are laying people off. >> reporter: restaurants are suffering too. the owner has seen a drastic reduction in business. >> the foot traffic is not what it usually is. >> reporter: he's adjusting schedules to account for the decline. >> we have cut down on hours

definitely. >> reporter: san francisco's economy is going to be significantly impacted. >> reporter: from lost conventions and empty restaurants and lost hotel revenue. the city is considering options to put cash in the hands of small business owners. >> we're trying to set up a fund to do just that and allow the private sector to contribute to that fund so people can have immediate access to get money so if they need to cover some expenses they're able to do so. >> reporter: the mayor says officials are exploring a moratorium on evictions. coronavirus fears are translating into more business at certain local stores. owners have to worry about shortages of certain items and keeping employees and customers safe. eric thomas joining us live with this story. >> reporter: this is where the

wipes go. as you c sre are none for sale right now. this morning this was a rack filled with toilet paper. it was. there's none here now. so logistics have always been part of the grocery business. you have to keep the shelve stocked. now there's a public health aspect. ordinarily joe would be thrilled about any increase in business at his market, but not right now. >> business has been good. i'm not super happy that it's good. i wish that it was a little bit calmer. >> reporter: he saw an 18% boost last week and a 50% jump over a normal wednesday yesterday primarily because people are stocking up in case they have to stay indoors because of covid-19. most items are in ample supply. >> so far i think everything i needed is here. i haven't checked the toilet paper here. >> reporter: no, hand sanitizer

sells out as fast as they get it in. >> i'm out of clorox wipes. >> reporter: as for toilet paper, this section was full this morning. look at it now. retailers are working hard to keep their places as safe as possible. sports basemen is putting out extra hand sanitizing stations. business here has been good. >> we are optimistic that people seem to be going about our business normally. >> reporter: the shopper was out with his three kids. >> you have to live. the economy has to keep going, but i think you have to do your part to try to keep clean. >> reporter: stores are doing their part to keep necessities on shelves, but some realize that a sick employee or enough sick customers could shutter the business for a while. >> i don't think we're there yet, but it's definitely something that goes through my mind. >> reporter: when it comes to tp, if you don't mind, they do

have plenty of recycled paper for sale. what they worry about here as you might imagine is as the numbers of covid-19 patients grow, that others who are healthy will have even bigger raids on stores looking for items they think they will need if they have to shelter indoors for a while. toilet paper not just here in a small market, but everywhere, hard to find. wipes are hard to find. business is up, but not for the reason business owners want them to be. abc 7 news. abc 7 news east bay journalist went to several stores today. at the safeway on walnut creek no toilet paper on the shelves and a clerk says an overnight shipment will probably be sold out by 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. here the food max had plenty of bottled water and paper products. this trader joe's had plenty of

they'll close doors. the decisions coming the day after the executive order to help contain the spread of covid-19. the recommendation, cancel gatherings of more than 250 people. visitors upset to hear the theme parks will close starting saturday. >> it's disappointing. we had plans to see a bunch of different sights and take some rides, but if today is any indication of how it's going to be, it wasn't that fun today because we got rained out. >> reporter: the governor applauding the decision in a statement saying in part disney made the right call in the interest of public health and agreed to shut down the california parks. expect more announcements like this shortly. one did come from universal studios hollywood, closed two weeks starting saturday. there are no reported cases of covid-19 at the resort, but the closure will last through the end of the month. disneyland cast members will be paid during this time, but other

employees at surrounding businesses may have to figure out what to do. >> disneyland tourism is important for everybody here, not only for my business, for the hotel and for everybody, yes, is effecting all the business. >> we know in general the resort employs around 30,000 people. now, the vast majority of those folks actually work at disneyland, but, of course, there are many and thousands throughout the area, restaurants and hotels. our heart goes out to them. >> reporter: the hotels at the resort will remain open until monday to give guests a chance to make necessary travel arrangements. >> i don't know what we're going to do since we have a five day pass. until sunday. >> reporter: the resort says it will work with guests who wish to change or cancel their visit or provide refunds to anyone who has hotel bookings during this closure period.

during this closure time, the universal city walk and downtown disney will remain open. abc 7 news. the dream of winning a state title is over for several local high school basketballs teams. this weekend's championship games were cancelled and tonight's game involving the boy's team. >> it's more important than basketball. there's so much uncertainty out there right now and you look at the other institutions, colleges, nba, ncaa, they're taking measures and you want to be at the forefront of that. >> the cancellation impacts the girl's team, which was set to play in the state finals for the second straight year. their coach says the players took the news hard at first, but now agree with the decision. >> we talked about the blessings that we have and there's so many other people struggling with

this virus right now and people losing their lives over this. >> the coach says he is proud of his squad. at 4:00 we asked our medical expert how long this pandemic could last and his answer was shocking. >> i could see it be the larger part of this year because we have to slow things down. do i think we're gambling on live television, do i think we're going to have a shutdown of schools this long, i don't. but it will change the way we look at transmission of disease. >> the doctor talked about this graph, it demonstrates what a difference protective measures can make like social distancing and cancelling large events in the spike of number of cases. the goal is to lower that spike flattening that curve to keep the number of cases within the health care's capacity to deal with it. we asked how worried are you

weather. >> it's going to change after a gorgeous day today. >> just as spring approaches, winter weather is on the way. here is a live view looking out at little fog pushing out over san francisco. you can see it's pretty mild in most locations right now, although cool here in the city. 55 degrees. we have 60s and 70s in oakland, 52 at half moon bay. the fog and low clouds have descended on the golden gate. it's 66 in santa rosa right now. forecast features look like this. areas of fog will develop before the morning commute. mostly sunny and mild. cold and wet pattern develops this weekend. overnight low temperatures under foggy conditions and mid to upper 40s. tomorrow's highs, we'll see upper 60s to low 70s, but things are going to change over the weekend. cold weather come our way.

infections and more than 4,500 deaths. the death toll in italy has surpassed for than 1,000. the white house press secretary says the president and vice president do not require testing even though president trump was resentscently exposed someone who tested positive. the stock market had the biggest drop as the dow plunged 10%. >> companies are stepping up to protect employees and customers from the coronavirus. >> many have asked employees to work from home. we look at how that's going. >> reporter: nearly 18,000 employees are working from home leaving parking lots empty. they're using the teleconferencing service. there's a hunger by other companies to do the same as they step up to minimize risk to

employees and customers. >> not only are we sharing the technology, but we're sharing the best practice to get started at well and we are offering web x free to help people to get connected. >> reporter: a skeleton crew is staffing offices. 150 employees in san jose, san francisco and sacramento are working at home for the next two weeks. they've been touched by covid-19. >> we had a project in seattle where one of the members of the installation crew got sick with coronavirus. they had to quarantine their crew. we had to move that installation to another installation team and that's the first time we've had that. >> reporter: the stock market turmoil is impacting the real estate market. >> many buyers do have stock options that they are relying on

using that money for a down payment so for that segment of buyers they are delaying their buying decision until the stock market rebounds. >> reporter: older sellers are being asked to stay home during open houses. so many offices have spaces where people can collaborate, but this crisis may cause companies to start thinking about maybe working from home might be an idea whose time has come back. abc 7 news. with many people working from home, ridership on bart continues to drop. it's getting worse each day. bart said that ridership was down 35% compared to a typical wednesday. tuesday it was down 30%. monday was down 25%. last week the drop was only about 8%. last night crews installed hand sanitizers in all 48 stations. bart is doing extra cleaning. traffic on the roads is

noticeably lighter too. you may have noticed that. looking at cars on the golden gate bridge. as you can see really light, particularly the bay bridge approach, but on the golden gate as well and moving steadily on the bridge, but not crowded. gas prices are down. gas is less than $3 per gallon at this station. at a nearby station gas was less than $3 and one driver had a glove on his hand as he filled up. the national average price for a gallon of gas is down six cents since monday. it's hit a record low for this year because of coronavirus and turmoil in the oil market. more bay area schools are closing in an attempt to stop the spread of the coronavirus. abc 7 news south bay journalist has the update.

>> reporter: with their ability to turn to online learning, private schools are closing their doors amid the coronavirus outbreak, that includes right here in san jose. >> in a letter to families wednesday night the schools announced after consultation and recommendations from the cdc they will close the campus to students until march 30th. no student or staff has been diagnosed with the disease. the school is making the decision out of caution for the school community. a similar message came from presentation high school as they announced the school will be closed effective thursday. >> i think they have done the right thing and i hope other institutions can follow suit. >> that is what they have to do. it's the right move. we don't want to spread what's going on. it's more concerning as a parent. >> reporter: presentation will switch to online classes starting march 16th. a difficult style of learning, including the student in the middle of her junior year in

high school. >> she's used to learning in class. hopefully it's not going to be for a long time. we care about the community and we hope this passes by soon. >> reporter: the plan is to return to normal schooling on march 30th, but parents believe keeping the school closed as long as necessary is a top priority. >> every day matters. i think they have done the right thing. >> we don't know how big the peek is and how long it's going take your time to make sure that the numbers are starting to come down. >> reporter: no confirmed cases have occurred. they're looking to keep students safe. >> we are keeping an updated list of school closures on our website. you'll find it at abc 7 news.com. churches will not hold public worship services in parts of six bay area counties to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. the policy covers 79 different

congregations. those churches serve 26,000 members. the bishop is inviting to people to worship from home. >> we did say starting last week why don't you offer live streaming services and let your people know. also, let the neighborhood know. so that has started to happen and i will be here this sunday. i'll be preaching and we'll be live streaming the service, but the doors will be closed. >> the church leaders could make exceptions to the no public worship policy for funerals and weddings. several churches have cancelled public services until further notice. the grand princess cruise ship disembarking is nearly finished. all but a few hundred passengers remain on the ship. the vessel itself will remain at the port of oakland until at

least sunday. the governor said this morning they are working to repatriot the 1,100 cruise members on board. most of the passengers have started their mandatory 14 day quarantine at various military bases, but the concern is around the lack of testing. >> we don't know much. we can't find out when we will be tested or if we will be tested. there seems to be a lot of conflicting information about that. >> a person under quarantine sent us this video of a crowded food line in the cafeteria tonight. many are upset because there's been nora al distancing fearing who didn't have the disease before entering the quarantine may have it now. as we've seen coronavirus is officially a pandemic. it's having a global impact. >> next we'll check on the reactions and responses from countries around the world. elderly passengers could be

the human toll of coronavirus continues growing around the world, especially in italy where more than 14,000 people are sick. >> italy reported 2,700 new cases today. italy also saw its death toll surpass 1,000 people. china is reporting fewer people being infected with just nine new cases in the last 24 hours. >> americans are scrambling to

get home with airlines preparing to cancel european flights following the travel ban. >> i was thinking there would be things taking place. i wasn't expecting this drastic of a change. we are ready to get back home now. >> here in north america canada's prime minister is self quarantining because his wife began to experience flu-like symptoms. >> she is awaiting test results to see if she has coronavirus. at least 39 people have died in the u.s. and there's over 1,400 cases reported nationwide. all of the major sports leagues joined the nba in suspending or postponing the seasons. the ncaa cancelled the men's and women's march madness basketball tournament and broadway in new york is shutting down performances. health experts told congress today the u.s. is lagging with testing. >> the system does not -- is not

as coronavirus spreads, so are worries about traveling on a cruise ship. >> the very leading cruising industry grou industry group is proposing to deny boarding to passengers over the age of 70 unless a doctor verifies they are fit for travel. >> we don't do stuff like this. this is a drastic measure that could keep some elderly passengers off cruise ships and those with chronic illnesses. the cruise line industry association is asking the white house to review that policy before it starts screening passengers considered most vulnerable. the proposal comes after what happened on the grand princess cruise ship which reported 21 cases of covid-19 among crew and passengers. it was in limbo off of the san francisco coast for days before eventually docking in oakland.

the industry group is proposing denying boarding for passengers over age 70 unless they have a doctor's note confirming they're fit to travel on a cruise ship. the policy also could screen out passengers with underlying medical conditions. the u.s. state department says u.s. citizens regularly travelers with underlying health conditions should not travel by cruise ship. it went on to say some countries may put cruise ship passengers in quarantine upon arrival in port or prevent passengers from getting off the ships. cruise ships are still docking at the port of san francisco. six are scheduled to arrive before the end of this month. the first is a carnival cruise liner docking march 19th. princess cruise has cancelled it's march 22nd voyage from san francisco. port officials say the cruise terminal is sanitized and d

one for a while. we'll see lingering fog near the coast line, but skies will be sunny tomorrow. highs from the upper 50s to around the 60s around the coast and low 70s inland. things will change over the weekend. starting at 5:00 a.m. saturday, notice rain will start to sweep through the bay area. during the day it will be widespread. light to moderate rain and snowing over in the sierra. this pattern will continue through sunday and into monday with not much of a break during the wet weather span. look for a rainy and cold weekend and in the sierra lots of snow. rainfall estimates will in inch and a quarter. in the sierra many locations will see two to four feet of snow above 2,500 feet. it's going to be windy. travel conditions will be difficult to impossible and road

good evening. the coronavirus has given a new meaning to the term march madness with the sports world essentially shutting down. the ncaa made the decision to cancel the men's and women's

tournaments completely. this goes beyond hoops. all men's and women's sports and championships. the ncaa basketball tournament has been played every year since 1939. generates about $1 billion in revenue. major league baseball has delayed opening day by two weeks. all teams were scheduled to play march 26th. minor league baseball is on hold. the giants are closing spring training. other organizations will follow suit. major league baseball has not had a mass possetponement since 1995. the sharks are heading back to san jose. their season has been paused. the league is hoping to resume long enough to crown a champion and give them the stanley cup. the cup was awarded in 1993. they've had two cancellations

since. one was in 1919 in the wake of a flu epidemic and 2005 after the season was cancelled because of labor dispute. the first ncaa player to test positive and help set in motion the postponement of the season. the league is hoping to reevaluate the situation in 30 days. today gober issued an apology for not taking the warning seriously enough intentionally touching the microphones at a press conference. his apology says i was careless and make no excuse. i hope my story serves as a warning and causes everyone to take this seriously. that's a tough way to learn a lesson. golf and nascar are continuing without fans and so we'll see how this progresses, but changing every day. >> every day it's changing. you may be seeing me do a lot of darts and cricket highlights. i don't know if that's still going on. >> you'll make do. >> thanks.
