>> if your commute includes b.a.r.t., finding a seat is all of a sudden pretty easy. more companies are ordering employees to work from home but b.a.r.t. is losing millions of dollars. good morning on this friday, march 13th. >> we'll get to all those stories in a moment but never more than seven minutes away from the accu weather forecast. >> take a look at what's going on with the visibility. and right now most of the fog is confined to that area. and the reason why is we have a stronger onshore breeze and the more west to east wind which is a more north to south wind. that helped push the fog down the bay shore and into the south bay. i don't think that is going to happen and if it does, it will be a lot less than it was yesterday. so, looks like mainly the north bay is going to feel the brunt of that fog and below visibility creates the morning commute. we have mid-40s to about 50 this morning about the same as yesterday. this afternoon will be mild. it will be seasonal and not nearly as warm as it was yesterday. mid to upper 50s at the coast.

on that. julian. >> goodern moin morning, guys. so much confusion coming from the white house when it comes to potential travel bans. the latest fears that there could be a freeze on travel from state to state in the u.s. and speaking to reporters just yesterday on thursday the president said that is an option on the table. potentially freezing travel between states if a particular state has the coronavirus outbreak that just gets unmanageable and out of hand. let's talk about that travel ban, that international ban that is going into effect tonight. four nationals from 26 european countries will not be allowed in the u.s. starting at midnight. the trump administration insisting all americans coming back to the u.s. will have to be tested for coronavirus. meaning, they'll have to travel through one of just 13 u.s. airports equipped to handle the testing. while this has not been confirmed, we expect sfo to be one of them. the president said americans who test positive will not be allowed in the country.

there's also concern about the availability of those test kits as we talked about extensively on abc 7 morning. now, while some may worry a state-to-state travel freeze may be going too far, we're hearing about stories like the one out of new york this morning of a person who is awaiting the coronavirus testing results getting on a plane at jfk to palm beach, florida, with a 114 other passengers while he was saying he was waiting for those results and now passengers next to the man are waiting for their results. a lot happening and lots developing quickly. for now live at sfo this morning, julian glover, abc 7 news. happening today, hospitals in santa clara county will begin screening staff and visitors for covid-19 before they head into the building. frontline workers are some of the most at risk. four firefighters have already tested in san jose.

chris reyes tells us how first responders are changing the way they do their jobs. >> you'll see when we approach a call, if it's not a critical patient, we'll send one responder inside that will have on a mask and have goggles and gloves and have on a gown. >> with this gear, san jose's firefighters must now screen all their patients unless it's a critical case. in that situation, their team must approach with full protective equipment. >> we're realizing now every call we go on could be a possible covid exposure and we're taking it seriously. four firefighters have tested positive and two have symptoms and are awaiting results. 80 firefighters have been restricted from going to work. some of their family members have also tested positive. all 34 stations in san jose have been deemed for deep cleaning. >> they eat and sleep in the same areas, they are at risk for possible exposure. >> reporter: the situation at sjfd a reminder of how risky it

could be to work on the front lines of the crisis including police officers, ems workers, nurses, doctors. all of them having to change the way they do their jobs. starting friday, all patients coming into a santa clara hospital must now be screened. the statement from the registered professional nurses association. we are working closely with the county to ensure that all necessary information is being disseminated in a timely manner and equipment and supplies are readily available for staff. >> b.a.r.t.'s director says the transit agency is on track to lose millions in revenue due to a drop in ridership. b.a.r.t. ridership was down 35%. confirmed staff has emergency plans in place, should there be a call to shut down b.a.r.t. or significantly reduce service. as of right now, no plans to do that. powers says hand sanitizer dispensers have been installed and b.a.r.t. has enough to last

seven to ten days. they are working on getting more. b.a.r.t. says they will not shut down the system unless they are forced to do so. kumasi. >> all right, thanks, jobina. all right. we'll get to more about pg&e. they're not going to shut off power to customers who can't pay their bills during this public health crisis. suspending service disconnections for unpaid bills. stay in effect until further notice and it applies to residential and commercial customers. pg&e are welcoming flexible pay plans. the santa cruz beach boardwalk has temporarily closed amid fears of coronavirus spread. the amusement park will shut down for the next two weeks. that starts today. in a statement posted online, the park said they are complying with state guidelines limiting mass gatherings. the closure includes the park's arcade, bowling alley and event hall and they expect to open in

time for spring break at the end of the month. santa clara county announced 18 new cases of coronavirus their total is now 66. starting today, the 49ers will stop operations at levi stadium. san jose tech museum is closing along with the exploratorium and the california academy of sciences here in san francisco. a new executive order by governor newsom removes the waiting period for disability insurance for anyone losing work because of coronavirus. >> directive is effective for the rest of this month. we will extend it as necessary. it's likely it will be extended. >> the state tax filing deadline is also extended for those impacted by the virus. the dream of playing for the state title is over for many teams. they weekend's championship games. it involved the boys team at

they will still pay cast members during the closure. the canadian prime minister justin trudeau tested positive for coronavirus. sophie trudeau is feeling well and will remain in isolation. right now the prime minister is not showing any symptoms and will not be tested. trudeau's office said he will be put in isolation for 14 days just as a precaution, but he will continue to fulfill his duties as prime minister. the human toll of coronavirus keeps growing around the world, especially in italy where more than 14,000 people are sick. italy is reporting 2,700 new cases and the country also saw i death toll surpass 1,000. china is reporting fewer people being infected with just nine new cases in the last 24 hours. many americans are scrambling to get home with airlines preparing to cancel european flights following president trump's travel ban. episcopal churches will not

hold services for the rest of marp. the policy covers 79 different congregations. they serve about 26,000 episcopalians. the bishop is inviting people to worship safely from home with the help of technology. >> we did say starting last week why don't you offer live streaming services and let your people know. and also let the neighborhood know. that already started to happen and i will be here at grace cathedral this sunday. i'll be preaching and we'll be live streaming the service, but the doors will be closed. >> episcopal church leaders could make exceptions for funerals and for weddings. the church of jesus christ of latter day saints has also canceled all public appearance services until further fears ar translating into more business at certain local stores. in fact, for many of them, it's too much business. owners have to worry about shortage of certain items, as

the potential for some thunderstorms with heavier rain and small hail. the front is going to stall across the south bay and with a moist onshore flow, we'll have periods of rain, waves of showers and thunderstorms possible saturday and again sunday and again monday, tuesday and taper wednesday. for the ktd wiweekend, let's lo your rainfall. quarter of an inch in the low spot in the north bay to an inch around hayward. that's policy. a an inch or more outside of the north bay for sunday and another 0.25 to 0 .75 by wednesday. by the time you add the four days up, a couple inches of rain and snow on our mountains. jobina? >> i want to update you on the sig alert at the san mateo bridge. this is an issue for people traveling westbound right now. westbound 92 right before the toll plaza. according to the chp, two separate two-car crashes that are blocking three lanes.

miles per hour. you can expect delays if you're moving westbound. moving down to san jose. 87 where we have clear traffic in the area and also bay bridge toll plaza here. we've been watching it all week long, guys. metering lights coming on later and later and they are not on yet. you should be able to get through just fine. >> thanks, jobina. thousands of students in the bay area out of school for at least a few weeks. >> that includes san francisco unified. all schools will be closed starting monday. amy hollyfield live at lake shore elementary. amy? >> hi, good morning. yeah, they're having classes today. this closure starts on monday. it did come as a bit of a surprise only because earlier in the week the school district had said that it was aiming to keep schools open knowing that parents, a lot of parents need their kids to be in school. but as the virus spread and concerns about the virus spread, officials made the decision yesterday afternoon to shut the schools down.

some parents are wondering, though, why they would have classes today. why they would delay the start of the shut down until monday. >> he's going to stay home tomorrow. >> and officials say it is fine to keep kids home today. but they do have school open as an option, if you need it. lake shore elementary school is already closed. four students are being tested for coronavirus. that school is already shut down. now the rest of the district will be joining. the district has said kids who qualify for free lunch will still get that meal and have not released details on how that is going to work. they're still working on that. the shut down does include spring break. they will be out of classes for a total of three weeks. the plan is to welcome them back on april 6th. no confirmed cases of coronavirus in san francisco's schools. but the school board is saying it wants to be proactive not reactive.

reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> they switched it up from being open to closed in 24 hours. that was quite a whip lash. okay, amy. students across the bay area will be staying home amid the coronavirus outbreak as you just heard. >> overnight these new closures were announced. the school union will close starting today. south san francisco unified and all santa cruz schools will close on monday. other districts that include closures include west contra costa unified and tamalpais union and woodside school district. >> that is a lot of districts and a lot of information. so, we have posted this on our website. you'll find it by going to abc7news.com/coronavirus. there are now more than 200 confirmed cases of coronavirus in california. that includes 140 here in the bay area. and as you can see, santa clara county still has the most with

66 confirmed cases. napa county announced a health emergency, but there are no confirmed cases of a citizen in that county. we are learning more details this morning about the three tsa agents at mineta san jose international that were infected. they were working in terminal b at checkpoint b in the evening shift. they checked bags, operated the x-ray and monitored the body scanner. each of them had different last days of work and it ranges between february 21st and march 2nd. that employee last worked when the sharks hosted toronto on march 3rd. that employee is under self-quarantine and recovering and apparently feeling a lot better. well nearly all the "grand princess" passengers have disembarked from the cruise ship. a few hundred passengers are

still onboard with 1,100 crew members. many of the passengers have started their mandatory 14-day quarantine period. they are at traffics air force base and some of them are pretty frustrated. >> part of the routine is that we don't know much. can't find out when we will be tested or if we will be tested. there seems to be a lot of conflicting information about that. >> governor newsom says california is reaching out to several nations to help the ship's crew members get back to their home countries. california now has the power to take over hotels and motels that isolate patients. it's part of an executive order from governor newsom that allows the stateo cmaee hotels and medical facilities to serve as treatment centers. some patients have already moved to hotels. according to the governor, a 120-room hotel in san carlos is housing people who were previously quarantined on the "grand princess" cruise ship. house democrats are expected

to pass a bill to fight the crippling effects of coronavirus on the table right now, paid sick leave and other financial assistance for struggling families. abc 7 news reporter andrew dymburt has more from washington. >> good morning. a bill could be passed as soon as today that would focus on providing relief for families and those most affected by the coronavirus outbreak. meanwhile, here in washington, two very different accounts on actual access to coronavirus testing for americans. lawmakers on capitol hill preparing proposals on the pandemic after late night discussions house speaker nancy pelosi says a deal is close to being done. some relief packages being discussed including paid sick leave, food assistance and free covid-19 testing. but there is still confusion surrounding test availability in the u.s. the president insisting everything is going according to plan. >> frankly, the testing has been going very smoothly. >> reporter: while top health officials strongly disagree with that assessment. >> the system does not, is not
