the total there to 79. that's the most of any bay area county. meanwhile the president announcing google is working on a website to send americans to the nearest testing site. but the company said that website is in early development stages. here is what the administration said about that site. >> start in the screening website up here, facilitated by google where clients and patients and people of interest can go. fill out a screening questionnaire, move down for symptoms and risk factors, yes. they would move down this and be told where the drive-through options would be for them to receive this test. the labs will then move to the high throughput automated machines to be able to provide results in 24 to 36 hours. >> testing so far has really lagged in the united states. according to the cdc, fewer than 15,000 federal and state tests have been administered so far.
4:32 pm
for more on this, we depend greatly on our coronavirus experts. one member is medical expert dr. alok patel, not just a pediatrician, but also a journalist and producer. thank you for coming in and talking to us about a couple different topics. i'm going to get through every question i have. >> we'll do it. >> let's start big and kind of get localized. you heard the president talking about google working with the administration to set up these at-home tests and drive-throughs. what's your first thought? >> my first thought, in theory, if there's a way to screen americans and get them to a testing site, it may keep people out of urgent cares or hospitals where they can potentially get other people infected. we obviously have a lot of questions. there's some key features missing about this such as data, are they going to be tracking people? also, what are people going to do if they can't access this? talking about the homeless, people who don't have a phone, don't have a car that can go
4:33 pm
wait in line? so i like the overall idea, we'll have to see if the execution matches it. >> if you don't have a car, you get a bunch of people standing in line and everybody is not doing the social distancing. >> or there are people that won't be able to go. that site is too far, i'm going to stay home. >> yesterday governor newsom reiterated concerns about the testing kits and said basically we don't have what we need here in california. now the president is saying those issues are being resolved. talk about why it's so important to get people tested, although as the president kept pointing out today in his address, not everyone should get tested. >> we've been saying we're going to have millions of tests for weeks now. we have to have them available for people who may be at risk, people who are traveling or concerned about their level of isolation or what they're going to be doing, who they'll be around. one thing we have to clear up, when we say tests, it's a broad term. there's a testing kit, chemicals go into the test.
4:34 pm
then you need to take out the genetic material from the virus. these are three different supplies. the cdc is sending out one part. state labs, commercial labs have to step up because there is a national shortage. that's what governor newsom was saying, it's like having a printer and no ink. we have to make sure we not only have the availability of tests, but all the right chemicals to run the test. people have to have access to them. a lot of things in the supply chain of tracking this disease. >> they're trying to get the turn-around time once tested to getting results to be within 24 hours, whereas right now it's several days. >> we'd love to get it down to a o help s. public health but help people understand what they need to do in that moment. >> let's talk about social distanci distancing. we can't talk about it enough. >> is this six feet? >> keeps coming down, now down to about 100 people or less.
4:35 pm
talk about why this is so important. >> this is super important. it gives all of us something to take into our hands. also, it goes back to the spikes we were looking at yesterday in flattening the curve. if we can keep our distance and we look at our individual risk and we do our best to not spread coronavirus, what we'll do is spread out the amount of new cases over time and not create that huge influx of new cases. what this is going to do, it's going to keep our health care h capacity. that's the bread and butter of social distancing and why it's so important. >> we've seen today it's really hitting the fan. >> it's hitting . >> s cas eeing closed. a lot of parents are saying, we're closed for three weeks, let's head to tahoe, make an early spring vacation. does that defeat the purpose? i guess if you can have nice cabin and can quarantine yourself in your cabin.
4:36 pm
does it defeat the purpose if everyone is going to these vacation spots? >> again, you have to look at what your situation is and what social distancing means for you. social distancing is a behavioral change. if you were to say, listen, we're going to take our own private car to our own destination, wherever it may be, tahoe or somewhere else, and we're going to avoid these large gatherings such as a crowded bar or a restaurant, probably wouldn't take your kids to a bar, that may absolutely qualify as social distancing. again, that's a specific situation. people who have the means to do that. this is going to mean something else for a lot of different people. for some families this is a critical period because they have to figure out child care, do i skip work, how am i going to follow social distancing while maintaining my life. >> how do you keep the kids from hitting the wall? you want to take them outside, it's probably going to rain spencer was telling us. what about being outside? some places are closed, the zoos are going to be open.
4:37 pm
can we still take them to the playground? kids, they need to get out that energy. what's the effect on just being outside unless you're under a stay-at-home quarantine, that's different. what about being outside? >> you're totally right, being outside is important. play is important. these are different behaviors and activities that help children cope with stress and fear. it is important that children are not going insane indoors. again, parents have to think about where is this playground, how many people are going to be at this playground, can i reasonably watch all four of my children and make sure they're not touching playground equipment and eating something or touching their eyes. i'm not saying playgrounds all across america are covered in coronavirus. these are basic things families should think about before taking the kids out in public. >> take an evaluation of the playground you're thinking of. some libraries are closing. if it's open, same thing? >> i would take caution with the library and look at the situation. again, basic, basic, hand
4:38 pm
hygiene and protective measures apply everywhere. those are powerful. you can dip your hands into coronavirus. if you wash properly, you're still good. these are things we need to teach our kids, whether they're going to a water park, the li o publi park. >> my last question. bear with me. the water, i'm seeing a lot of moms asking, well, swim class is still open. something a lot of parents take their kids to weekly. is it still safe? they feel like that's one of the relatively safe places to still take their kids? does chlorine in the pool kill coronavirus? >> according to the world health organization and the epa from what i was reading, chlorination should actually kill this coronavirus, even our basic filtration and treatment we do for our u.s. water supply, should keep the water clean and coronavirus-free. with that being said, that's only in the pool environment. that is not including -- >> the changing room. >> any other wading area. >> the play lobby. >> some public pools are very
4:39 pm
crowded. another thing to take into account. >> i told you i was going to get through all my questions. >> we did it. >> thank you, doctor. >> we want to make sure you have th ltevelmere prepared and safe. that's why we have our team of experts including our fabulous dr. patel. >> i'm not sure if i'm comforted or more scared now. covid-19's economy, obviously a growing concern. for example, fitness professionals, many of whom will have no income if their gyms or studios happen to close. abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow has that part of the story. >> reporter: it's especially concerning for some of the smaller studios that wouldn't be able to keep paying their instructors if they have to close their doors. as independent contractors figure out how to stay afloat, one bay area teacher is working on a possible solution that would benefit the studios, the teachers and students alleys kay is a full-time yoga teacher who leads as many as five to six
4:40 pm
classes a day seven days a week. >> i don't have the ability not to go paycheck. >> reporter: kay says surprisingly her class attendance is up this week with many people working from home. but she's already lost a big portion of her income as a result of covid-19. some studios have begun to limit class size. it's possible at some point they may need to close their doors. >> people putting memberships on hold. that kills our neighborhood, kills our studios. >> reporter: one larger studio has committed to financially supporting its teachers. l cap owns indoor rock climbing and fitness gums with four bay area planet granite locations. >> the safety and well-being of everyone who works here is paramount. if you don't have sick time, great, don't come to work. reach out to us, we'll figure something out. if you don't have health insurance and you want to get a covid-19 test, get the test.
4:41 pm
reach out to us, we'll figure out how to pay for it. >> reporter: it's an option that may not be possible for smaller gyms and studios. this youg ga teacher is coordinating an effort to teach classes with students practicing from home and the studios and teachers still getting paid. >> doing the classes online from home and students can still sign up through whatever system they're already using to sign up for studio classes. >> reporter: the idea not just about generating income but also about serving our community. >> people who are at home really stressed out in these times need yoga and meditation more than ever. >> reporter: here is another idea if you want to support some of the smaller gyms and studios, buy gift cards now that could be used later. in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. employees in many businesses are going to be working from home for who knows how long. we'll talk to an hr expert on how to maximize productivity
