an eerie weekend in the way area. the coronavirus crackdown, cancellations, perhaps the rain keeping people home. new confirmed cases, many counties ban large events and daily life becomes vastly different each passing day, each passing hour. good morning, it's sunday, march 15th. i am liz kreutz. we have full coverage of all of it in a moment. first we want to start with a quick look at the weather. we are getting some much-needed rain. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, liz. big winners the east bay, oakland, berkeley, el cerrito. not so much in the north bay. some of you a couple 0.01, others well over a half inch. we have one on our storm impact

case of community spread coronavirus in sonoma county. leaders say this is an employee at the rower in park health center believed ex-poelex exposed from a source outside the facility. a second patient has been tested with result pending. details today at noon. while you were sleeping new bans on public gatherings took effect in a few counties. santa clara counties, extends to groups of more than 35 people, includes bars and restaurants w some exceptions. in contra costa county, gatherings of more than 100 people are banned, through at least march 31st and late last night in san mateo county, gatherings of 50 or more people are banned. fewer than 50 have to provide soap or hand sanitizer. a look at the current confirmed coronavirus total as of this morning. sonoma county up to four with

the newest case of community spread. santa clara county reported 12 new cases yesterday pushing its total to 91. san francisco also reported five additional cases and marin county added two new cases for a total of five. a total now in the bay area of 208. happening today, of course church services will be impacted around the bay area. episcopal churches will not hold public worship services in parts of six counties for the rest of march, exceptions to the no public worship policy could be made for funerals and weddings. grace cathedral in san francisco plans to livesteam the services today. church of jesus christ of latter day services canceled public services until notice. as laka customer service agent at sfo tested positive for coronavirus. alaska says an employee felt sick and left work on tuesday. their positive test result came back friday. alaska is working to identify anyone who may have come in

contact with this employee. the airline says it is thoroughly cleaned its employee break room and any areas where the agent worked. new results show president trump has tested negative for the coronavirus. it's part of several new updates nationwide including an extension of the u.s. travel ban to include the uk and ireland. elizabeth he has more. >> reporter: president trump in a rare saturday afternoon briefing telling members of the press he has been tested for covid-19. >> i decided i should based on the press conference yesterday. >> reporter: saturday night white house physicians revealing the results of its test, neglecttive. officials are urging social distancing. the president joined criticism for shaking hands. >> reporter: why are you shaking hands, sir? >> it almost becomes a habit, people come up to me, shake hands, it's a natural reflex. shaking hands is not a great thing to be doing right now, i agree. >> reporter: the u.s. travel ban now expanded to include the uk and ireland.

in italy alone, covid-19 claiming 175 lives in the last 24 hours and in france, the prime minister announcing that nonessential businesses including restaurants, cafes and cinemas will close until further notice. back here at home, hospitals are gearing up for potential patient overflow. >> the testing is really everything right now, because we have to figure out which patients have the covid-19 and which patients don't. why? because we have to isolate those patients to make sure they don't spread the virus. >> some cities now offering drive-through testing from san francisco to seattle, denver,

birmrochelle, new york. take a look at this, arriving international passengers seem to have no room to socialize distance at chicago's o'hare airport. crowds there. o'hare is one of 13 u.s. airports now, including sfo with extended screening areas to check arrivals for coronavirus. patients complained about scenes like this at dallas-ft. worth international and claim nobody is offering them hand sanitizer or protective masks while waiting several hours. thousands and thousands of people are try igto come back home from europe. if you've been driving on california's freeways, you may have seen signs like this, i did coming into to work this morning, more than 700 digital highway urging people to socially distance, "less is more, avoid gatherings." usually it's never next while driving or driving carefully while construction workers are

working. with the crackdown on large crowds, some are still hitting local bars. laura martinez found some bar owners are much more worried than their customers. ♪ >> reporter: bars and dplubz san francisco have seen better nights but coronavirus concerns are not keeping people from having a good time. >> it's celebrating st. patrick's day with my friends, people i love. >> reporter: and there's no hesitation going out and being around people. >> as long as you're cautious and you're, you understand what's happening, it shouldn't be a deterrent to do anything else. >> not scared of it. i'm scared of the reaction more than the virus. >> reporter: staff at this bar off polk street are trying to take every precaution possible. >> we're using all recyclables and no glassware. >> reporter: the owner at tonic says business has been down 70% this past week. >> i don't think we can overstate how serious the financial impact is going to be across all bars in san francisco. this is definite tating. >> reporter: at kell's irish

restaurant and pub the owner wishes the city would mandate restaurants and bars close and go on lockdown. >> if we get a lot of people in, who are we putting at risk, and at this point, i'm kind of leaning towards closing. >> reporter: he says he's staying open only for the employees. he's not concerned losing business around the st. patrick's holiday. >> probably one of the busiest days of the year but that's really not the point. i even forgot about that. >> reporter: in san francisco, lauren martinez, abc 7 news. >> and people are now being ordered not to visit patients in san francisco hospitals, that includes friends, even family. the concern of course is people who aren't showing symptoms can unwittingly infect vulnerable patients with the coronavirus. the ordeal will continue through april and violations could result in a fine or imprisonment. hospitals are allowed to make some exceptions. women giving birth should check with their hospital about the rules. in the east bay, officials are reacting to the covid-19

stanford university students are scrambling to move out by wednesday. the university gave the order after a student tested positive for coronavirus. the person is self-isolating while the school back tracks where that student visited. li luz pena reports. >> reporter: as the deadline approaches, students are feeling inches. >> the student body has a sense of uncertainty. >> reporter: david cross is an international student from canada. he's xempexempt to having to le campus on a short notice. the university president said "we will be prioritizing

centers will be closed. in the newsroom, luz pena, abc 7 news. >> uc berkeley has a student who tested positive for covid-19. the university believes no one is at significant risk. in-person collapses suspended since last thursday through the end of spring break, march 29th. campus at this point remains open. many san francisco families are also scrambling to find child care, with the city's public schools closing for three weeks, starting tomorrow. >> the kids can't come with me to work and it's going to cause me to lose pay, lose wages, lose benefits in order to stay home to provide for my kids. >> the school district plans to have students complete assignments online but one teacher fears students may lack access to computers and wireless. >> it's a big inequity issues, putting things online do our students have the capability to complete work? we are working currently with our community school program to

up, strap comes off, off you >> so far 75% of people said they'd use the strap. it is creative. b.a.r.t. ridership severely dropped since the outbreak. friday's ridership was down 50% from the same time last year. in the south bay, the valley transit authority is reducing its light rail capacity and suspending school transit starting tomorrow. the halting of school service is no surprise after santa clara county ordered all schools to close. trains will be one car. the vta says that could change once it gets a better look at ridership data. more businesses are closing their doors. abc 7 stopped by urban outfitters last night in courte made madera. the retailer is shutting down for at least two weeks. the company owns anthropologie.o everlane nshut down but will be

online. p patagonia closed, not available online and several tahoe ski resorts are shutting down due to the outbrea. northstar, and veil resorts which owns all three made the decision to close all north american mountain resorts until then. squaw valley and alpine meadows is suspending operations today with no immediate plans to reopen. as we're talking about the snow we also have rain in the bay area this morning. let's go over to lisa argen tracking the forecast. >> hey liz. the system is slow to get out of here, the one yesterday that brought us the showers really concentrating on the east bay, parts of the south bay. here live doppler 7. there is certainly some breaks out there but more rain offshore. as we go in closer, mt. hamilton, temperature just above 30 degrees so looking at a rain/snow mix. ce

there and westward toward san jose and campbell we have some showers, a little break on the peninsula, more offshore here into the north bay and around vallejo looking at a few light showers on and off as you travel up towards the north bay. geyserville a little wet and in the mountains 28 to 30 degrees, all snow, that winter storm warning continues into 11:00 tomorrow. it is 50 right now in hayward. 54 in oakland. 48 in berkeley and temperatures are certainly chilly on the coast with the upper 40s. mid-40s in santa rosa, surface winds pretty gusty, anywhere from 15 to 30-mile-an-hour gusts along the coast at sfo, napa and oakland take us through the morning hours and the winds lighter as we go into the afternoon when we see a few breaks out there in our overcast. as we look at the winds, you can see the yellows indicate the breezy conditions at 6:00 tonight, and things are less che of showers though tonight, even

possibility of a thunderstorm. so we're going to keep this rainy, d f thrt the morning hours. we get a little bit of a break this afternoon, and as we look outside right now, you can see that pretty dark out there, morning showers, chilly temperatures, sunny breaks in the afternoon, and then more showers getting a little bit more invigorated with a chance of thunderstorms tonight and then monday, a couple of showers into tuesday. let's take you through the rest of the day. 7:00 you see the line here. slicing across the north bay. by 10:30, we have widespread rain from the north bay to the east bay, livermore and san jose. here we are at 3:00 in the afternoon. the north bay has been dry. you're getting some sunshine, and in fact yesterday you really had the least amount of rain here, but everyone gets a little bit of a break in the afternoon, and then here comes tonight, the overnight hours through your monday, more showers perhaps if you're headed out early to work, and then into the afternoon we'll call it partly to mostly cloudy, but still the upper elevations pretty unsettled

have a live audience, moved to phoenix to cnn studios. who are say ramos was no proximity with someone who was in direct contact with the person that tested positive for coronavirus so he will not moderate the debate. he was cleared but made the decision out of an abundance of discussion. happening today, we are expecting the final passengers from the stricken "grand princess" cruise ship to finish disemba disembarking. the ship has been sitting in the port of oakland this past week. now comes the process of testing the passengers. northern california passengers have been quarantined at travis air force base, a handful fairfield inn and suites in san carlos. a spokeswoman said the collection process could take several days. bheest've seen the videos, l across the bay. this video was yesterday at the cost co business center in south san francisco. lines wrapping around the building. stores across the country are having the same trouble keeping up with demand. here is nbc news.

>> reporter: amid the growing coronavirus pandemic, people streaming to their local stores where they're finding long lines just to get in. >> it was quite crowded and we had to wait outside for about 20 minutes before they let us in. >> reporter: experts are calling it fear contagion and the fears pushing people to panic buy. >> there's no water bottles, there's no bleach, clorox wipes. >> reporter: and that panic leading to empty shelves in stores across the country, as shoppers look to stock up on essentials. health experts say shoppers should concentrate on items part of of a healthy diet but also stock up on staples. >> you get the rice, the beans, the spaghetti, things like that, peanut butter. if you have all of that on hand, you don't have to make as many trips to the grocery and be in touch with other people. >> reporter: two supermarket chains publix in north carolina based harris teeter announcing they will be closing all locations early each evening to concentrate on cleaning and restocking store shelves.

the cdc is suggesting otherwise of getting groceries, through delivery services. >> you can ask the delivery service to leave the groceries outside your door or in a neutral place if you're concerned about contact with the driver. >> reporter: in terms of medical products the cdc says be sure to have over-the-counter medicines and medical supplies to treat fever and other symptoms. most people will be able to recover from covid-19 at home. cvs announcing it's working on plans to facilitate covid-19 testing and the drugstore chain adding it's taking other steps to help waiving charges from home delivery of prescription medications and making diagnostic testing and telemedicine visits available with no copay. another concern is price gouging and the doj issued a warning saying it will not hesitate to bring criminal charges against companies and individuals caught engaging in such activity. abc news, washington. >> the race to avoid a nursing home crisis with the elderly

especially those living in nursing homes. more than two dozen residents in the nursing home in washington state have died of the virus. a new national coronavirus task force has announced new measures to protect the elderly in facilities across the country. >> nursing homes should restrict all visitors effective immediately and that includes all nonessential personnel. there are some exceptions for end of life. >> in addition to that ban, all group activities, including communal dining are canceled. health care workers are also being screened. the nation's top infections specialist says the risk of infection is significantly less for healthy seniors without any underlying conditions, but of course, as you get older, you're more susceptible. you're not going to be able to see your dad for a while. that's the sacrifice we're all making. >> it's sad. a little scary but r from yesterday. it continues into a portion of your sunday. 49 in concord.

mountain. live outside it's slick out there. give yourself extra time. if you're headed out, it's cold. mt. hamilton, the precip, the rain/snow mix from the pink to the purple and as we go into milpitas and san jose, santa clara, you folks picked up anywhere from a third to some areas a half inch of rain yesterday, and some light showers continue from the peninsula, south san francisco, burlingame, 280, up through the city here and the sunset, but in the north bay, you have been lacking for sure. yesterday only about some of you maybe a quarter inch but less than that and as you see from middletown through petaluma a few scattered light showers but looking at santa rosa over towards vacaville it's pretty quiet out there. it's snowing in the mountains. winter storm warning continues for another 30 hours and we're looking at 47 mountain view. 46 in novato and certainly the cold air in place. the breezy winds, and current winds at the surface 30 miles an hour in oakland. about 15 san francisco and you

can see the winds up inlf mn ba so itllas to do with the system traveling town the coast down the coast to the west of us, allowing for showers to keep going and a cool day out there. so we'll keep that in mind as we go through the next 24 hours and going to go and work the computer on this angle since my clicker has died. all right, so as we go through the next couple of hours, you'll notice that the rain is going to be with us throughout the coast, along san francisco, into the peninsula, and now i got nothing, folks. anyway, looking at 0.1 of an inch to 0.3 today and after that pushes on through we'll see a few showers as we get into your monday and tuesday. so the snow continuing, maybe a couple feet. one to two feet as we get towards lake level and then looking at around three to four feet around kirkwood. here is a look at the

reports on the random acts of kindness giving people most. >> reporter: most of one of the most insiduous effects of the virus is fear. we can see hope through the actions of others. a round of applause from their balconies in a show of gratitude for the doctors and nurses caring for the sick. basketball star steph curry and his wife are helping to raise money to buy a million meals for children in california who may not have access to lunch anymore, because of the school closings. >> we want to make sure that we rally around everyone and ensure that these kids are not wondering where their next meal is coming from. >> reporter: local communities are asking people to buy gift certificates and vouchers their favorite restaurants to keep revenue coming in as fewer people are choosing to dine out. a woman in oregon tweeted about an elderly couple afraid to go into a grocery store so she went instead to get their food. her tweet is being shared over 100,000 times. >> it's a difficult time.
