. now, your health, your safety, this is abc7 news. quiet, empty streets all around the bay area because of the coronavirus pandemic. now this morning new confirmed cases and counties are going farther to ban large gatherings. good morning, it's sunday, march 15th. i'm liz kreutz. there are more coronavirus by the hour. but we want to start with a quick look at the weather. here's abc7's lisa argen. >> good morning. it's a level one. we had good downpours this morning. it's been chilly but a possibility with colder air moving in, thunderstorm later on

today. let's get to live doppler 7. you can see the big twist in the atmosphere. there's the low sirnking south. and the east bay has been particularly lucky with downpours from kensington to 580, highway 4 martinez and look at the downpour here from daly city, marin county tonight north it is a rain/snow mix where we thought this would happen. check out the diablo range. looking at pink and purple, meaning it is snow coming down. fremont and sunnyvale. 47 half moon bay. you can see the rain coming down from mt. tam with fog. we're colder and breezier throughout the day. the good thank yous is the winds will die back. we will see a few breaks in the

cloud cover. it will take a while and we will talk about showers to start of the work week. today we're learning two ucsf workers tested positive for coronavirus. they're notifying anyone who might have been in contact with them. in a statement released minutes ago from ucsf, based on their current investigation so far they believe the health care workers were exposed from the virus from outside sources, not ucsf's clinical facilities but they're still working to make the final assessment. in a couple hours we'll get the first update of community spread coronavirus at sew mona county. this is an employee exposed from a source outside the facility. the employee is in self-quarantine. officials also say a second person associated with that patient has been tested with results pending. health officials will be giving a live press conference with details at noon. and while you were sleeping,

new bans on public gatherers took effect around the sear. santa clara areas including bars and restaurants with some exceptions. contra costa counties, bans of 100 are banned. this will last at least until march 31. and in san mateo, groups of more than 50 people are banned. few are than 50 are allowed to gather but they have to provide soap and hand sanitizer. here's a look at the total cases in the bay area. sa moma county up to four. santa clara county reported 12 new cases yesterday, pushing the total there to 91. including the ucsf workers that tested positive, there are now 30 cases in san francisco and marin county added two new cases for a total now of 200 in the bay area. happening today, of course,

church services will be impacted around the bay area. episcopal churches will not hold public worship services in part of six counties for the rest of march. exceptions could be made for funerals and weddings. grace cathedral in san francisco will livestream their services today. an alaska airlines agent at sfo tested positive for coronavirus. the employee felt sick and left work tuesday. the positive test result came back friday. alaska is working to identify anyone who may have come in contact with this employee. the airline said it thoroughly cleaned the break room and any of the areas where that agent worked. officials in new york announced the first two deaths in the state due to coronavirus. this comes as the government steps up the fight to keep it from spreading. >> reporter: this morning the death toll rising across the use

as health officials try to mitt great the spread of covid-19. in new york officials reporting the state's first two tests. a 65-year-old man with, quote, significant health problems passing away thursday. one day later an 82-year-old are woman from brooklyn succumbing to the virus. the governor saying she emphysema, which kocontributed her death. >> this was like war time. >> reporter: 600 catholic services canceled as officials try to stem the tide. alarms are going off across the country. >> this does hit everybody equally. >> reporter: tourism could perpetuate the problem. >> you have a lot of flights bab and forth between new york and ft. lauderdale. people are bringing it in with more cases. i imagine we will see the number

grow in the next week or two. >> the virus hitting florida's political leaders. miami later francis suarez testing positive. >> i was shocked but i realized quickly i had to go public with the information because i come into contact with a lot of people and i wanted to inform them. >> reporter: as the path ajen spread throughout the nation, health care workers on the front line concerned about the impact on hospitals. >> we are seeing patients coming in with flu-like illnesses and pneumonia. >> reporter: 18 of 25 known infections are from bergen county. >> we're at the epicenter and we're expecting people to voluntarily self-quarantine themselves. you should only go out if you need to go out. but we're asking you to be smart. if you have been driving on california's freeways, you may

have seen signs like this one here. i saw this one similar myself coming into the city this morning. more than 700 digital highway signs are urging people to socially distance with the slogan less is more, avoid gatherings. usually these message boards remind us of other tips like next text while driveling and drive carefully whether construction crews are working. friday and saturday nights are treated a whole lot different now in san francisco. even with the crackdown on large clouds. some are still hitting local bars but abc7 reporter laura martinez found bar owners who are much more worried, even than their customers. bars a >> reporter: bars and clubs and san francisco have seen better nights but coronavirus is not keeping from having a good time. >> sell operating scelebrating y with my friends. and as long as you're cautious to what's happening, it shouldn't be deterrent to be

doing anything else. >> people are scared of the reaction more than the virus. >> reporter: folks here are trying to take every precaution possible. >> using all recyclables and no glass ware. 3 >> reporter: the owner at atomic said business is down over 70% this week. >> i don't think we can overstate the financial impact over san francisco. this is devastating. >> reporter: at cal's irish restaurant and pub, they wish the cities would just mandate bars and restaurants closed and go on lockdown. >> if we do get a lot of people in, who do we put at risk? at this point i'm leaning towards cloning. >> reporter: he's staying open now only for employees, not concerned about losing business on the st. patrick's day holiday. >> honestly it's one of the busiest days of the year but that's not the point right now. i even forgot about that. >> reporter: in san francisco, lauren martinez, abc7. people are being ordered not to visit patients in san

officials are reacting to the covid-19 anticipate pandemic and help small businesses clobbered by the crisis. >> reporter: covid-19 is impacting everyone's lives. >> oakland mayor libby shaf said the coronavirus is hitting small businesses hard. many restaurants are forced to close temporarily because customers have stopped coming. some downtown streets are empty. >> we're open. these doors are open a long time so still have customers come in. >> reporter: but a lot of people are staying away. >> i know. >> reporter: manuel torres is struggling to keep his longtime restaurant on w >> now it's very, very, very slow. about 60% of customers. it's very, very slow.

reopen. an update for all of you. i think we're going to get now to stamford medical center. excuse me, i'm sorry about that. stamford medic stanford medical center their students are scrambling to move out byiv for coronavirus. abc7 will show you how students are scrambling to get out. >> reporter: highly traffic areas empty, dining halls empty. as the time approaches, stanford students are feeling anxious. >> the student body is an uncertainty. >> reporter: david cross is a student from canada and exempt from leaving campus on such a short notice. in a letter to students stanford's president said we will be prioritizing international students who cannot go home, students with no severe health safety risks and students who are homeless.

>> it's a lot harder for me be able to do my classes at home. we don't have internet. thankfully stanford's letting me stay here. >> reporter: decisions were made after they banned events of 100 or more people and restricted gatherings of 35 people or more. she had her bags packed and stanford paid for her ticket home. >> last night we received an email saying we had to leave by wednesday. >> reporter: where are you going to go? >> we're going to be flying back to my home in connecticu. >> reporter: as many will be able to continue classes online, and others wait for what happens next. >> a lot of people talking about coronavirus. a lot of people saying good-bye to their friends, really disappointed, sad, worried. >> reporter: sanford is also asking professors to make finex for the winter optional. in the newsroom, luis pena, abc7

news. i want to apologize for the technical difficulty we had earlier. uc berkeley said a student tested positive for coronavirus. they believe no one is at significant risk to contracting the illness. in-person classes suspended last tuesday until the heed of spring break march 29th but the campus remains open for now. many families are scrambling to find childcare with the city's public schools closing three weeks starting tomorrow. >> the kids can't come with me to work. it will cause me to lose pay, lose wages, lose benefits in order to stay home to provide for my kids. >> many san francisco families are also scrambling to find childcare with the city's public sku schools closing three weeks. tomorrow the school districts plan to have assignments online but teachers fear they may lack access to computers and internet access. >> it's a big quality issue

putting things online, do our students have the ability to complete work? i know we're working currently with our community school program to get students chromebooks. >> they have food ready to free children who rely on free and reduced-priced meals. you can -- families can pick up those foods at 14 schools across san francisco. we know there are other school districts across the region that are also roying food for students during this time and even some restaurants are stepping up to provide meals for kids. so a lot going on on this front. let's talk about weather. something different for a change. >> good morning. i agree with that. check out the beautiful imagery where you see the pressure to the north of us. as it sinks to the south, it will take most of the rain with it but we had a soaking in the east bay and upper elevations in the hills. but as you go in tighter you notice the green in pleasant

hill, around 680, concord, it's been wet through walnut creek. back west and further to the north, highway 37, hercules, highway 4 in martinez. you had rain but not as much to the south. we will continue can the scatter shower regime for the next couple of hours. san francisco had good downpours through daly city. highway 1. 380 scattered. fremont looking at rain and rain/snow mix in the diablo range. in the mountains still looking at the winter storm warning and gusty winds as well. east bay, check it out. rain in here, 49 san francisco as well as san jose, 48 half moon bay. this is what we need, nice rainbow from san jose, where we got breaks from the clouds. a day like that today where we will see breaks. is will be moisture out there so a chance for neat pictures. 44 in petaluma, 50 concord.

livermore 49. you notice the winds are breezy to gusty out there. 15 to 30 miles an hour at times. but they will continue to dial back. look at this shot from sutro, gray and foggy and damp. but by the later afternoon we're looking at sunny breaks for most of you. earlier in the afternoon up in the north bay and showers sink to the south, the area of olymplow pressure will take some of the shower activity with us but you notice in the loop you will see to see them offshore monday and tuesday. here's the rest of the day at 2:00. break in the north bay. as we go through the overnight hours, still cold air is in place. we could see the possibility of a thunderstorm. and then into early monday, rotation around the slope continues to spin up some of the shower activity right through your monday morning and monday afternoon. not a lot. they will continue to decrease, the showers. throughout the day today, looking at a couple hundredths. some of you may not see anything

welcome back. fans of the reality tv show "bachelorette" won't be getting a new season for a while. warner brothers, who produces the show, stopped production because of what they say, of course, is the rapidly changing events related to covid-19. the new season was set to start filming two days ago with sacramento native clare crawley, former contestant on "the bachelor" as "the bachelorette." there have been no confirmed cases of coronavirus on any of its production, and like so many things, it's out of an abundance of caution and we have to do our part. coming up -- travel turmoil. airports in chaos amid new travel bans and widespread lockdowns overseas. the president announcing the results of his covid-19 tests

we're going to start this half hour with a look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. our impact scale level one. we've been getting good rain. thunderstorms may come in later. colder air and few breaks in the overcast and that will add to the instability. snow levels lowering to around 3,000 feet or lower. there's the low off the northern california coast, spinning up the showers and the moisture has been pretty decent in the east bay from i-80 through east

went to the hospital friday after experiencing fever and flu-like symptoms. a doctor issuing a covid-19 test after separate tests for flu and strep throat came back negative. and now questions are also lingering about one of the president's statements from friday, when he touted an upcoming nationwide program being built by google. >> it's going to be very quickl done, unlike websites of the past, to determine whether a test is warranted and to facilitate testing at a nearby convenient location. >> reporter: but a half hour after that event, google tweeting a statement on behalf of their sister company verily saying the project is in the early stages of development and planning to roll testing out in the bay area with the hope of expanding more broadly over time. when asked about the discrepancy saturday, the vice esident promising an update today. >> we're working literally around the cloing but tomorrow, 5:00, we will have very specific

of coronavirus cases rising to 28. >> again americans in the uk or ireland can come home. legal residents can come home. but they will be funneled through specific airports and processed. >> reporter: this travel ban comes as most of europe is defined as a hot zone goes on lockdown. spain ordering 47 million to stay at home for at least 15 days. the wife of prime minister pedro sanchez, along with two spanish officials, testing positive for the virus. in france, popular restaurants, bars and theaters are shut down. reports claiming roughly 300 patients in critical condition. nearly half under the age of 50. in italy -- >> for the most part, italy is a ghost town. there's nobody outside in downtown rome, in any of the major monuments. the fountain, spanish steps, absolutely empty.

>> reporter: only grocery stores, pharmacies and banks are open. they saw the biggest increase daily yet and with the death toll now rising to more than 1,400 authorities are pointing to irresponsible behaviors by residents still socializing. americans coming home from here will not be affected but they will have to quarantine for two weeks when they get home. these details covered in a phone call between president trump and prime minist prime minister boris johnson last night. the national institute of allergies and infectious diseases is trying to help g ba normal. dr. fauci"this week" and social distancing and how they helped china's numbers go down. >> they just shut down the country. as they start getting back to personal interaction, i hope we don't see the second blip but

it's possible. we're looking favorably at the fact china is coming down but we also want to look carefully to see what happens when they resume normal life. hopefully it will stay down but it possibly could come back up. >> dr. fauci also said he's confident the federal government is doing everything that needs to be done to contain the virus. happening today we're expecting the final passengers from the stricken "grand princess" cruise ship to finish imembarking. the ship has been sitting in the port of oakland all this past week. testing will be offered to the almost 900 passengers evacuated this weekend. health an human officials said the process could take more than several days. passengers have been quarantined at travis air force base and a handful in san carlos. officials say the collection process could take several days. the longshore union is calling on the "grand princess" to test all crew members on the "grand princess." about 1,100 crew members

abc7's sports anchor chris alvarez has more. >> reporter: good morning. with every sport shut down for the foreseeable future, the nfl has made no official changes to its off-season schedule. meaning as of now the new year, which includes the beginning of free agency, will start next week. espn's adam schefter reports officials from both teams wonder how that can happen. typically in free agency players are flying across the country to visit teams about signing a deal. that's hard to do or justify at this point. even the pro football hall of fame announced it's closing for atleast two weeks. if the nfl continues as usual, the new league year starts wednesday at 1:00 p.m. pacific. major league baseball canceled spring training, pushing the start of opening day by at least two weeks. according to "the san francisco chronicle" giants' players are working out deals to return to the field soon. the league gave the players three options, return home, return to their spring city or training facility. the trainer said as far as he knows he's staying in arizona.
