confirmed coronavirus cases in the bay area. santa clara has 114 and two deaths reported. san francisco 37, including two ucsf health care workers who tested positive. san manteo has two cases and reported the first death today. the case involved an older adult with underlying medical conditions. napa has no reported cases. it's not just at a state level. today the federal government announced new tactics to stop the coronavirus spread. large events and mass gatherings of 50 or more be cancelled or postponed for the next eight weeks. the first dose of a potential covid-19 vaccine will be sent for clinical trial tomorrow. more on this story. >> reporter: more than 3,000 cases of coronavirus now

confirmed here in the united states where drastic measures are being taken to control the spread of the virus. mass gatherings put on hold. almost 26 million students out of school. many americans working from home. the governor of new york, the state with the most cases in the country, explaining why these steps are important. >> slow the spread of the virus to a rate that the health care system can manage. >> reporter: 49 states and the district of columbia reporting cases of the virus. >> every hospital particularly in those cities experiencing high numbers of coronavirus cases, they are activating their disaster plans, which to be clear has to do with supplies, space, systems and staff. >> reporter: a member of president trump's coronavirus task force says he's confident the federal government is doing everything that needs to be done to contain the virus. >> you have to be almost overreacting a bit to keep up

with it. >> reporter: amid the growing shortages at stores, president trump holding a conference call with grocery executives. travel to the u.s. has been banned from 28 countries. >> legal residents can come home, but as the secretary will detail they will be funneled through specific airports and processed. >> reporter: the world health organization calling europe the epicenter of the outbreak. the vatican sayingcan sayingcang be on hold. during his address this afternoon, president trump announced the federal reserve has slashed interest rates to zero. this is something the u.s. hasn't seen since the 2008 financial crisis. stock futures fell more than 4% and gold rose 3.5%. an employee of the rona park health care center has tested positive for covid-19. officials believe that employee

was infected through community spread and not from the health center itself. >> we are working hard to identify anyone who may have been in contact with that person. i think all i can share with that number is, i'm not sure that is important as everyone realizes that this is in the community and everybody needs to be careful right now. >> the employee is self quarantining and coworkers are being notified as we speak. sonoma county says it's public health lab has performed over 60 tests. private labs are also performing tests. most large school districts in the bay area have cancelled classes with many of the closures starting tomorrow. san francisco, oakland and santa clara county school districts are among those. oakland will set up 12 sites to provide a grab and go breakfast and lunch. the santa clara district will have f at selected school sites. san francisco will run and operate emergency care

facilities at libraries and recreation facilities of children of patients on the front lines of the outbreak and low income families. parents needed to register today. parents in san francisco can pick up free meals for children at one of these 18 sites you see here. the locations have different opening dates with the number of them opening on tuesday. all will be open on thursday. don't forget you can find a list of closures and cancellations at our website as well as as advice to stay healthy and calm. shifting gears to our other big story, storm watch as we take a live look at the break in the rain. abc 7 news meteorologist, there is more on the rain. >> these showers are scattered in nature. doppler 7 is quiet. we'll zoom in to the east bay

port of oakland at 7:00 tonight. union leaders are angry at plans to unload the garbage. it violates a deal the port of oakland made when the ship docked last week. that agreement called for the ship's trash to be unloaded on to a barge, but now plans have changed. >> there's too much unknown about the coronavirus for us to take these kind of chances with the community and the union is absolutely opposed to any dumping trash on this dock. >> abc 7 news has reached out to the port of oakland, but officials have not >> the pandemic have changed the way some faithful worship. this was the 11:00 a.m. service today that was streamed live. the church is closed for most in-person regular worship and

culturaal events through april. the sunday masses have not been cancelled, but priests have been asked to shorten services as much as possible. chaos erupted at major airports nationwide today. this is what it looked like at chicago's o'hare. thousands of arriving passengers jammed into tight quarters after the newly ordered health screenings. flyers complained of wait times up to seven hours. sfo did not see these waits. it is one of the 13 designated airports for arrivals from europe and asia. tomorrow abc news will air a special edition of 20/20 on the coronavirus. it starts at 10:00 p.m. right here. our wet weather is bringing a lot of snow to the sierra. while some skiers made the trek there this weekend, they may leave a little bit disappointed.

a big bummer for some skiers. several tahoe resorts have shut down because of the outbreak until monday march 23rd.

the decision was made to close all resorts until then. alpine meadows are suspending operations today with no plans to reopen. that's a bummer because snow is coming down in the sierra. it is affecting driving. a stretch of 80 was closed earlier today. cal tran's cameras show us conditions. chains are required on both roads. higher elevations saw two feet to five feet of snow. the national weather service expects it all to continue with rain in the valley through tomorrow. talking about our own weather situation and the impending rain, before we get to weather we should explain why we are so far away. we're social distancing. >> we're practicing what we preach. >> we have to. >> it's sad the resorts have to close, but we understand the reason why. back here in the bay a lot of showers out there. in the south bay, peninsula and

east bay. light showers. we'll zoom in on live doppler 7. some light rain and a pop of pink and purple seeing some wintery flakes up there. we have light rain working through parts of the region. here is the bridge right now. it is soaked in rain. rainfall this weekend pretty impressive with this storm that stalled. san francisco picked up over an inch of rain this weekend. san jose, this is a good storm for the south bay. you have been in and out of the rain for the past 36 hours. oakland, close to three-quarters of an inch. a little bit less in napa. the north bay has been spared by this storm because it's stalled the south. live doppler 7, here's the storm right here. it's situated right over our

neck of the woods. there's that area of low pressure that will supply us the chance of more showers monday and into tuesday. snowfall potential, we've seen one to three feet in the sierra already. this is additional snowfall. tack on another one to three feet of snow by tomorrow evening. we're in the 40s and 50s right now. it's cool for this time of year. only 52 in the city. 57 in fremont. on the storm impact scale, it is a level one light storm we have on our hands. still more scattered showers. additional rainfall on top of what we've seen. there is likely going to be snow on the highest peaks. we're seeing that right now in the east foothills near mount hamilton. overnight it's going to be cold compared to last night well into the 30s in the north bay. around the bay shoreline, upper 30s to 40s. future weather later on tonight

early tomorrow morning, that wet weather confined to the southern half of the bay area, but tomorrow we'll find that scattered showers are fair game for everybody. it's on and off light rain for monday afternoon and monday evening. total rainfall probably a tenth to half an inch of additional rainfall through monday evening. here is the seven-day forecast. cold showers on your monday. tuesday we're still tracking scattered showers. we get a break wednesday and thursday as we welcome spring. then friday night another chance of rain and next weekend saturday and sunday it looks like we'll find more rain, a light storm on the storm impact scale. it's nice to see this pattern change and we need it. >> bank it up while we can. getting to sports now, believe it or not, even though a lot of sports are postponed, there is sports news to be had. >> yes. coming up in sports, where will quarterback tom brady land this off season?
