closure of more businesses, many which are seeing a steep drop in business already. >> we are directing all bars, night clubs, wineries, brew pubs and the like be closed in the state of california. we believe that this is a nonessential function in our state. >> now restaurants will be allowed to stay open but at half capacity. customers must also be socially distanced in dining rooms. and the state is in the process of buying hotels and motels to house the homeless, another group vulnerable to the virus. now bars and brew pubs and wineries are being told they should close. restaurants, as you just heard, are asked to cut their occupancy in half. we have more on this story, and it's tough for owners out there. >> reporter: it really is. in san francisco alone there are

340 bars and 68 wine bars. this irish pub you are seeing behind us just closed an hour behind and we are seeing firsthand how business owners are responding to the outbreak. governor newsom said all wines, bars and pubs should be closed, and it's not mandatory but many owners are responding, and as to restaurants they can remain open but need to focus on social distancing, and we spoke to a man that said once he heard the governor announcing this, he decided to close all of his bars. >> i personally believe it's the right thing to do. what i am really hoping is the measures we take now will prevent things from being much worse. >> reporter: this situation is so fluid, that two days ago he was still open and waiting on the next steps.

he has been taking his own precautions by increasing the cleaning around his business but today he decided it was time to close. the number of cases in california has increased to 345, a 14% increase from yesterday. that same bar owner we spoke to, he said as soon as he heard the news from governor newsom he called his employees and asked them to apply for unemployment. >> what a difference a few days makes. thanks. a third person in the bay area died from the coronavirus. san mateo county reported its first death today. few details are available but we know it is an older adult with underlying medical conditions. santa clara county has reported two deaths, the most recent on friday. in california at least six people have died from the coronavirus. sonoma county is reporting its first confirmed case where the patient was likely infected through community spread.

that person is now self quarantined. >> we are working hard to identify anybody that may have been in contact with that person. i think while i can share what that guesstimate number is, i am not sure that's as important as everybody is realizing that this is in the community and everybody needs to be careful right now. >> here are the current confirmed coronavirus bases in the bay area. santa clara reported another 23 today, and now has 114, that is the most in the state. san francisco has 37 cases. this includes two ucsf health care workers that tested positive. san mateo county has 32 cases, and that includes the death it reported today. and contra costa county with nine cases, and napa is the only county that has not had a resident infected. starting tomorrow san francisco public schools will be closed and special sites across the city will provide meals on those

that get free or reduced lunch as school. usually some of that food goes to pantries set up at schools for families, and now the food bank is partnering with the school district to provide groceries when families pick up pre-prepared meals. >> we are not preparing the meals for that program, but we would like to run pantries at the same time so families can also take home groceries. >> the food available to families will involve fresh produce and canned goods and staples like rice and beans. >> and 20 recreational vehicles will be used as temporary housing to deal with the coronavirus. so far at least two people are living there but do not need hospitalization. each one has a kitchen and bathroom. the event center in san mateo is one of the places designated by the state for emergency response

purposes. the bay area's retail landscape has changed dramatically in the past several days as the coronavirus crisis keeps growing and changing, and cornell bernard joins us live from the uni union square. it's almost unrecognizable there? >> reporter: yeah, what we are not seeing here are people. take a look. normally union square would be e filled with locals and now businesses are closing down temporarily to try and protect customers from the coronavirus. it only took a moment for tourists to realize this is not the same union square they have seen in post cards. >> i was here a couple weeks ago and it was a lot busier. i was thinking that as i was crossing the street. >> sports giant nike announced

it will close this store along with all of its u.s. stores until march 27th, in an effort to contain the coronavirus. apple closing all its doors for two weeks, and today some customers were locked out. and also the clothing chain, urban outfitters, closed until further notice. other retailers are changing or reducing store hours, and macy's is open but very empty. >> looks like shoppers decided to take precautions and stay home, and it's a ghost town in this area right now. >> and i was just going to go return something in patagonia, but they are closed because of the covid-19 outbreak. >> we saw the security guard outside the store. >> what you guys are doing here? >> making sure no looting goes on. >> and there were customers at the town center, and a sign on

coronavirus coverage in just a moment, but it has been a wet weekend in the area. more rain rolled through today as we take a look at what it looked like earlier in novato, near highway 37. coming down at a good clip there. are we done? that's the question. >> we found that most cities this weekend coming close to half an inch if not an inch of rainfall thanks to the slow-moving front we still have on live doppler 7. in some areas we see light to moderate rain. from san leandro south into hayward city, we see showers. foster city, redwood city and palo alto and san mateo finding that wet weather right now. light rain as you move towards walnut creek, and mt. diablo, you see the pop of pink and purple, that's wintry mix happening in the upper elevations. we will deal with the wet weather in the next 24 hours,

sierra where there is a storm warning through monday afternoon. it's coming down pretty good. traffic has been held at time on interstate 80 and highway 50. the latest storm could dump as much as five feet of snow by the time it moves out. even so don't go rushing up the mountains if you want to go skiing, several resorts have shutdown because of the coronavirus outbreak. they are closed until march 23rd. vail resorts made the decision to close all north american mountain resorts until then. squaw valley and alpine is suspending operations today with no plans to re-open. in the midst of the coronavirus crisis, you can head to abc7news.com

/coronavirus. everybody is seeing the wet weather, but what we are finding youou see downpours briefly. we had a slug of moisture through the heart of the bay area right now. we will zoom in and it's through oakland down to hayward, union city, fremont, light to moderate showers. light rain dotting the landscape from san mateo to redwood city, and then there's a moderate band, and expect heavier showers here. shortly after 7:19 p.m. look at the santa cruz mountains and mt. hamilton, you see pops of pink, purple and white, and that indicates the air is cold enough in higher elevations where we will see snow falling on our highest peaks overnight and tomorrow morning. we are seeing a lot of snow. look at this. live doppler 7 over the past six hours, snow has been falling at

feet per day. we have already gotten one to three feet by tomorrow evening we will tack on another foot to two feet of snow in the highest elevations, so it will help our snow pack which is below normal at this time of year. back home, we are in the 40s and 50s. 51 in san jose. 49 in san ramon. live doppler 7, there's the cold front stalled over us right now and that will push off to the east tonight. there's the area of low pressure that will sink to the south over the next day or so so we still have to keep our wet weather in the forecast. additional rainfall will likely fall, 0.1 to half an inch of rain, and we will watch for snow
