you don't have to buy so much. take it easy. just relax. >> president trump today assuring the public about coronavirus, saying, quote, it all will pass. governor newsom struck a different tone today. cracking down on businesses and telling california seniors to stay home. good evening, and thanks for joining us, everybody. i'm dion lim. here are the latest headlines on the coronavirus tonight of the cdc is recommending all events nationwide with more than 50 people be canceled for the next eight weeks. in the east bay, health officials from kaiser permanente and medical facilities say no elect ive surgeries at the four east bay hospitals for at least two weeks. it's all to prepare for a

possible surge of coronavirus patients. also tonight, calistoga, joint unified and maraga school districts announced they're canceling classes for several weeks. travis air force base says an active duty airmen and a dependent of a service member have both tested positive for coronavirus. san francisco state university also confirmed an employee has tested positive for the virus. now, here are the confirmed cases in the bay area. take a look. sonoma county announced a fifth case, this one community transmitted. santa clara reported another 23 cases today, for a total of 114. the most in the state. and san francisco has 37 cases, including two ucsf health care workers who tested positive. san mateo county has 32 cases which included the death it reported today. almeda county 15 cases. governor newsom today laid out an aggressive plan to slow the spread of what has become a fast-spreading virus. he is ordering bars and clubs to

shut down, urging californians to practice deep social distancing, and asking seniors and those at high risk to isolate themselves at home. >> we have the capacity to still be productive in this society. but we need to protect those that are most vulnerable. to this virus. >> newsom said the state is setting up a system to get food to seniors who are home bound. the state has more than five million seniors aged 65 and higher. he also said california will buy motels and more trailers to be used by the homeless, to get that population out of encampments. now, seniors here in the bay area have mixed reaction today to newsom's recommendation they stay home. abc news reporter jr stone joins us live in the newsroom with more. jr, what did you find? >> reporter: everyone i talked with today agreed on the concerns throughout about coronavirus. disagreeing on what should or shouldn't be done. even as journalists, we are taking precautions tonight.

now, in this story, we've distanced ourselves, a bit from interviewees, as a way to be cautious of our social distances, and some of the sound may be affected. >> i'm not frightened. and i have lung issues. >> reporter: barbara morgan, a senior responding to concerns about the coronavirus. the governor on sunday recommending that seniors 65 and over self isolate in their home, barbara is not on the same page. >> if i'm going to get, it i'm going to get it. and i'm not worried about it. and i don't think i can stay in the house for three or four weeks. i think i'll be dead before i get to the virus. >> reporter: while barbara joke, others say they have already self isolating and will continue to do so after they stock up on more food. >> we're doing it. yes. >> no doubt about it? >> no doubt. >> i think i'm only going to

come out only if i feel it is important or necessary. >> i asked for your input on facebook concerning the matter, and dozens of you responding. dr. sophie mohamed says as a physician, i think it's a good idea. in contra costa county, staff with meals on wheels are delivering food to seniors, as volunteers are calling out sick at such high rates. >> right now our services are more critical than ever. because the people we serve are most at risk for the virus. >> reporter: so many mixed opinions about the virus, the right approach that should be taken. and so much positivity out there as well. >> like they say, americans usually survive. when it comes to times like this, everybody seems to be able to pitch in and help each other and what not. >> now, again, we are trying to keep our distance during our interviews, since that is the recommendation out there. if you'd like to volunteer for meals on wheels in contra costa county, you should give them a

call. you saw them in that story right there. they are looking for more help right now. dion, now back to you. >> we appreciate that report. also, your efforts to stay safe, and speaking of our reporters, taking those precaution, abc 7 news reporter, went to restaurants and bars today to see how they're responding to newsom's bar to close. >> closing a bar at 5:00 p.m. on sunday, it sun heard of, especially two days before st. patrick's day. >> the owners of this irish pub in san francisco decided to close their doors three hours after governor gavin newsom made the announcement. >> we are directing all bars, nightclubs, wine recollection brew pubs, and the like, winery, and brew pubs and the like be closed in the state of california. >> i feel bad for people behind the bar. it will affect them for a long time. >> reporter: this was not a mandatory order from the governor, almost three miles away in the tenderloin, tony clark also closed. >> i personally believe it's the

right thing to do. and what i'm really hoping is that the measures we take now will prevent things from being much worse later. >> reporter: two days ago when we interviewed ben, he was wondering how long his bar would remain open, his biggest fear, his employees not getting paid. >> we are emailing them know and letting them know they should file for unemployment as soon as possible. >> governor newsom also announced restrictions for restaurants. >> consideration nonetheless is to socially distance patrons within these establishments. >> something this chef has been implementing since last week. >> i'm very concerned, france shuts down, spain, italy, so i think it is very, i will listen to whatever i am told to do. >> in san francisco, abc 7 news. north bay wineries also hurt by devastating wildfires in recent years are also on the list of businesses governor newsom called to shut down today.

we spoke to a number of wineries, still figuring out their next steps. chandon and domainecarneros said they are not sure how long they will be closed. and others like describe, coppola, and jlohr will be closed and updated by midweek. we spoke to one of the wineries in sonoma, as a small business owner, producing about 2,000 cases a year, he had a suspicion a shutdown was coming and prepared by increasing his online presence, and by making other preparations. >> and we're offering shipping discounts to make that more cost neutral to them. and we're working with also the chamber of commerce, and the business bureau, because this is a time where we all need the locals to come out and support us. >> well said. and davis says he is prepared to pay his employees through the

next three months. breweries are also left scrambling to figure out what to do. earlier this week, russian river brewing in santa rosa, announced they are staying open. today, staff told us they plan to stay open because they are technically a restaurant, not just a brew pub. and they also told us the brewery's owner will be meeting with governor newsom tomorrow. now, newsom didn't mention coffee shops today, but starbucks will transition most of its stores to, to go order, only to limit the amount of time customers interact with each other and with employees. seating areas will be removed for the next two weeks at least. the coffee giant says it may close some location entirely in areas in high clusters of covid-19 cases. blue bottle coffee will close all of its u.s. cafes and re-evaluate opening two n-two weeks. blue bottle locations in korea and japan will stay open. the company says there is extensive testing and medical support in place in those countries. well, tonight, on world news

air out over there, but trying to keep calm, and be living life as normal as possible. >> san francisco's public schools are working with other partners to ensure that all students have access to computers, and the internet, so they can complete those online lessons. parents in san francisco can pick up free meals for children at one of these 18 sites here. the locations have different opening dates, with a number of them opening on tuesday, all will be open by thursday. some public school families already received if from pantries at their children's schools, and the san francisco marin food bank is working with the san francisco unified school district to provide groceries to families when they pick up school meals at sites across the city. >> unified will be handing out prepared meal, so we're not preparing the meals for that program, but we would like to run pantries at the same time so families can also take home groceries. >> the food available to families will include fresh

produce, canned goods, along with staples like rice and beans. the bay area's retail landscape has changed dramatically amid the coronavirus pandemic. many stores, even resorting to drastic measures, to keep customers safe by closing their doors. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has this story. >> reporter: it only took a moment for tourists to realize this isn't the same union square they have seen in postcards. >> i was here a couple of weeks ago and it was a lot busier. and i can see, i was actually just thinking that as i was crossing the street that it seems really, really quiet. >> reporter: sports war giant nike announced it will, sportswear giant nike announced it will close this store at stockton and post and other stores to contain the coronavirus. and apple closing all stores for two week, and today, some customers were locked out. also closing doors temporarily, sendhiser audio and clothing chain urban outfitters closed until further notice. other retailers are changing or

reducing store hours. macy's department store is open but very empty. it looks like shoppers are taking precautions and deciding to stay home. it's a ghosttown in the store right now. >> the patagonia store on north point street has also closed temporarily. as a precaution. >> i was just going to go and return something, at patagonia, but it closed, because of the covid-19 outbreak. >> we found this security guard outside the patagonia star. >> what you guys are doing here. >> providing protection, making sure no looting goes on. >> in marin county, few customers at the town center in court madera, a sign on this door tells customers to stay out if they're sick. and restaurants like pig and a pickle are struggling but offers customers a new way to order food. >> people can order online and pay online and have curbside pickup so you don't have to be around other people and stay in your car and pull up when the food is ready. >> back in san francisco, this is what union square looked like

at 6:00 p.m. it is desolate. other retailers also closing doors temporarily, including abercrombie and fitch, ann hollister, lululemon, walmart and safeway stores changing or reducing hours of operation. abc 7 news. >> that list keeps on growing. you may have noticed we are constantly updating the ticker at the bottom of the screen. it contains lots of safety information as well. something else you may have noticed, this is a new shot for us that we're trying out because we are practicing the social distancing at least six feet apart for us on camera, and then also for our reporters in the field. >> yes, and i think a lot of people are going to be staying home tomorrow as well. with the wet weather, more rain in the forecast. something we desperately needed in the winter season and we're finally seeing several days in a row of wet weather. behind me, on live doppler 7, a rainy night out there. good sleeping weth fer you ask , if you ask me.

light rain scattered in nature in the east bay, from oakland to hayward to san ramon. and the heavier downpours through the south bay. this is where the heaviest rain was focused for much the day today. san jose closing in on an inch of rain. and downpours there. sunnyvale, palo alto, as well. and as we move into mount diablo. we want to show you this. live doper 7, it is indicating that the color, the pink and purple and white on the screen, we are seeing a wintry mix am the highest peak, a cold storm and not out of the question, and a dusting of snow early tomorrow morning, on some of the highest peaks. rainfall totals in the past weekend, the highest in the south bay, where the rain is focused for the last 48 hours and over an inch in spots, the east bay, three quarters of an inch of rain. in the north bay, it has been a mainly cloudy day but seeing on and off light showers. close to a quarter of an inch of rain there. live doppler 7 showing you in the sierra, it just continues to snow. this has been the picture for at least the past 36 hours.

we've alrefewoo ur of snow. and we still have a winter storm warning in effect until tomorrow evening at 5:00 p.m. additional snowfall on what we've already seen will likely tack on another half a foot to a foot of fresh powder by the end of day tomorrow. it's chilly out there. we dropped well into the 30s if not in the 30s in the coldest spots. 38 in santa rosa. and 48 in the city right now. 46 in san jose. so a chilly rain in the south bay. 46 the current temperature in san ramon. live doppler 7 along with the satellite, the bigger picture we are tracking, you can see the front centered right over central california, it continues to bring us the wet weather tonight, and that will continue overnight. and then watch, this area of low pressure, it sinks south, and continues with the scattered showers tomorrow afternoon. so it is a level one system we have here for the next 24 hours, and showers and downpours, and the winds though, they do remain light and the snow we're tracking, a dusting on our highest peaks, so the future

weather early tomorrow morning will find the showers mainly focussed in the south bay, but it is a cold night out there, 30s to low 40s over the next six to eight hours. and the future weather showing you 3:30 in the morning, we're tracking those showers, and there's that wintry mix we're talking about, on mount hamilton. and then tomorrow afternoon, pretty much anyone is fair game for a scattered showers to pop up. rainfall is going to be pretty wide-ranging, in the north bay, pretty light, but the south bay where the heavier rain is focused, likely over half of an inch of rain coming our way the next 24 hours. here is the accu-weather seven-day forecast. the next seven day, cold showers tomorrow. continue the chance for st. patrick's day on tuesday. we'll dry out here midweek wednesday. and spring officially arrives on thursday but deon, friday night rain returns saturday and sunday next week, and tracking another level one system that will likely bring more scattered showers next week end. >> i think of it as banking the moisture for down the road. >> nice to see it. >> thanks, drew. >> inner loop.

became the sports league to suspend play due to covid-19 and expected to be a hiatus for 30 days but the time line is expected to be pushed even further as we are facing this global pandemic. nba owners and executives are looking at a possibility of a mid to late june return. best case scenario in the situation. there are fears the season could be a complete loss with the cdc's recommendation that no events should include 50 or more people, for the next eight weeks. now, as of now, there is a working plan for games to return without the fans, and teams, needs to search out arena date, well into august, for the playoffs. we'll wait and see. athletes are doing their best to stay safe and healthy during these uncertain times. warriors superstar stephen curry posted a psa on his social media accounts encouraging everyone to do their jobs to stop the spread. >> as best we can, practice social distancing so we can get rid of the spread of this virus, as soon as possible. and flatten the curve. make sure you stay six feet away

year will go off as scheduled on wednesday. espn, nfl insider adam chefner says many in the leaf are questioning that decision. >> there are head corner, general managers, agents, players, reaching out, who incensed at the league beginning and they can't understand how countries like italy, france and spain are closing down, how every sport in our country is suspending play, basically stopping operations, and free agencies going to go on. >> major league soccer has extended the team training moratorium through friday. players expected to remain in their club's home market and advised to practice safe social distancing measures and the league is working with public health authorities and the cdc fo on a protocol that will allow access on individual training. and the mls suspended their season thursday for at least 30 days. major league baseball scheduled to have a conference call tomorrow morning. that will address player workouts during the stoppage.

once again, good evening, i'm dion lim, in tonight's headlines, a quick update on the coronavirus cases in the bay area, we now marin county has just confirmed more cases, now for a total of nine. governor gavin newsom has urged millions of californians, ages 65 and older, to stay home. medical experts say older people face the greatest risks of becoming severely ill or dieing if they contract the virus. the governor also called on california's bars, wineries,

brew pubs, and nightclubs, to close in an effort to stop the spread of the virus. this is not a mandatory order but the governor described these types of businesses as being quote nonessential functions. vice president mike pence is promising new guidelines for the coronavirus response. that will come from the cdc tomorrow. there are at least 3200 cases of coronavirus in the u.s. and tonight, the american college of emergency physicians said two e.r. doctors, one in washington, one in new jersey, are in critical condition, as a result of the coronavirus. in las vegas, mgm resorts international, is suspending operations at their properties in the city. wynn resorts is closing casinos. also tonight, united airlines says it will cut flight capacity by half in april and may and expect the cuts to extend to summer travel. abc news reporter, megan has more on the reaction of coronavirus across the country tonight. >> reporter: with over 3200

cases of covid-19 across the country, u.s. officials taking dramatic measures to slow down the spread of the novel coronavirus. in new york city, the country's largest school district, will close monday until at least april 20th, maybe longer. >> it's very painful. it is going to be very difficult for a lot of families. the entire state of ohio, and other cities and towns, people in the u.s. closing bars and restaurants, and in illinois, ordering restaurants to only allow drive-through and delivery services. >> this is not a joke. no one is immune to this. >> also tonight, the federal reserve lowering interest rates, again. this time, to near zero percent. since record highs last month, the dow is now down 21%. president trump critical of the fed in the past, now applauding the move. >> i want to congratulate the federal reserve. that's a big difference. quite a bit. a point. >> this, as hospitals brace themselves for a surge of

patients. facing shortages, in the necessary protective gear. one nurses association asking americans if they purchase n-95 masks needed by health professionals, to donate them to the people fighting on the front lines. >> we are very concerned that when this virus peaks, that we have enough of this equipment for our nurses to take care of our patients properly. >> abc news, new york. a clinical trial for a vaccine designed to protect against coronavirus is expected to begin tomorrow. a government official told the associated press the first participant will refer a dose and the nih is funding the trial at a kaiser permanente research facility in seattle. public health experts say it will take a year to 18 months to fully validate any potential vaccine. manny's in the mission was the hot spot tonight to take in tonight's debate between the

democratic presidential rivals joe biden and bernie sanders and as you can imagine, one topic dominated all the others, the coronavirus. biden did reveal tonight, if he's not named, his running mate will be a woman, sand evers said the same, sanders said the same, the debate unfolding without an audience. reporter mary maloney has the story. >> reporter: amid the coronavirus pan dem ictidemic, and bernie sanders attempted to prove their leadership qualities to a country staring down a crisis. >> this is like a war and in a war you do whatever needs to be done to protect your people. >> in the midst of this crisis, we have got to act in an unprecedented way. >> due to coronavirus virus, the debate moved from phoenix to washington, d.c. with no audience and the podiums were six feet away adhering to social

gavin newsom's announcing this afternoon, that the ship would leave at about 7:00 this evening. it will sail to the middle of san francisco bay and anchor and healthy crew members will be taken off the ship before taking chartered flights to the home countries. sick crew member goes to medical centers for treatment. east bay leaders are mad about unloading garbage from the ship and brought along the streets. the agreement called for unloading trash on to barges, and then hauling it to a maritime disposal site when it docked. but now, the port wants to do the job a little differently. >> we also feel that there's a rush to get this thing done, and ship out of here, without taking the proper procedures, and that could endanger people's lives. >> we have been told several different stories about this cruise ship that have turned out to be either untrue or

unverifiable. >> abc 7 news has reached out to the port of oakland, but officials have not responded yet to our request for a statement. california casino are closing to help sloe the spread of the virus. the california grand casino in pachennko will close tomorrow. the restaurant shut down today. staff was limiting casino games tonight. it plans to reopen on april 1st. oak's card club in emeryville will close tomorrow and plans to reopen march 30th. casino matrix in san jose, closed its doors midnight on saturday and cash creek resort and casino in yolo county will also temporarily close this coming tuesday. still ahead on abc 7 news at 11:00, they went viral, for price gouging more than 17,000 bottles of hand sanitizer and now the investigation into the brothers by attorneys general in two states. >> i'm meteorologist drew tuma, a gray and rainy night for a lot of us.

millions of americans have stocked up on essential items and we've seen shortages on things like toilet paper, cleaning supplies and bottled water. today president trump spoke with the chief executives of some of america's biggest retailers on a conference call. those companies included walmart, safeway's parent company al bertson's, costco and whole foods and mr. trump praised those companies and their neighbors for serving their neighbors in this crisis. >> bog 24 hours around the clock keeping their stores stocked. i would like to see that people shouldn't be go out and buy everything. we will be great, we will sob good. >> the president said that walmart's ceo told him that shoppers are buying more than they are at christmas. and two brothers accused of

hoarding wipes and hand sanitizer are being vefrtsed by the attorney general. according to the new york times, one brother drove up a thousand miles buying up all of the hand sanitizer key buy and the other brother ordered pallets of the products online. both are accused of selling the products online with a steep markup. now they're under investigation in tensz and kentucky for price gouging. >> people who know me know that that is not me. was i buying them intending to turn a profit on selling them? yes. but at the same time, i wasn't in a situation where i was trying to rip people off. >> the brothers said they plan to donate a bulk of the high demand products to churches and first responders. so far though, that has not happened. all right, one last check of the weather withdrew, and a soggy week ahead. >> it is tomorrow and tuesday. we are finding that wet weather out there tonight, as well. live doppler 7, it's active, and

as we've been telling you, state and federal health officials are recommending we all practice social distancing to keep each other safe from the coronavirus. i checked in with dr. patel, reggie did, part of the abc coronavirus ex experts, to explain just what social distancing means. >> the coronavirus has spread around the world, and the world health organization has officially declared a pandemic.

the coronavirus is transmitted by droplets, from coughs, and sneezes. the best way to prevent getting it is by practicing social distancing. but what is social distancing? >> social distancing is the term we're using right now, that is essentially everyone doing their best to stay away from large crowd, while we're trying to reduce the spread of this disease, coronavirus. >> imagine a crowded room full of people. everyone in the room is healthy. except this person. they are infected with the coronavirus. but they don't know it. they shake hands with half the people in the room, and let's say half of those people get infected. over the next five days, those people go on with their lives, some develop what seems like a cold, and others have no idea they're sick. but they're spreading that coronavirus along the way. in fact, friends and family and strangers, without even knowing it. that's what health experts call an outbreak. social distancing keeps the number of people in that crowded room from ever being infected

by, well, not being crowded. >> social distancing is almost like everyone is on responsibility. it's the role that they play in protecting their community, and slowing the spread of the coronavirus. >> social distancing is not the same as self quarantine or isolation. that's when public health officials order you to stay away from other people, because you are infected. >> social distancing means thinking about the impact you might have on others, if you do get coronavirus. >> the cdc recommends keeping six to ten feet away from other people. >> if you are on an airplane, or a bus, for example, are you going to choose a seat that's closer to group of people or try to keep a little bit of distance? six feet away? if you for example go to dinner, are you going to try to go to a table that's in the corner or go to a bar and sit up to a counter next to a bunch of people. to the gym, for example, and try to go with a lot of people
