force base said a service member tested positive for coronavirus. san francisco state also confirmed an employee tested positive for the virus. now, here are the current confirmed coronavirus cases in the bay area. last night the mayor of gilroy confirmed an elderly person has died after contracting cronavirus and that person is one of two cases in gilroy. santa clara county has a total of 114 cases which is the most in the state. marin county announced four more cases bringing the total there to nine. sonoma county has a fifth case. san francisco has 37 cases including two ucsf health care workers who tested positive. san mateo county has 32 cases which includes the death it reported yesterday. and alameda county has 15 cases. an aggressive plan and ordering bars, clubs and wineries to shut down and restaurants have to reduce their capacity. in addition, he's asking seniors

and those at high risk to isolate themselves at home. >> we have the capacity to still be productive in this society, but we need to protect those that are most vulnerable to this virus. >> newsom said the state is setting up a system to get food to seniors who are home bound. the state has more than 5 million seniors age 65 and higher. california will buy motels and more trailers for homeless people to get that population out of encampments. seniors had mixed reactions to governor gavin newsom's recommendation to stay home. j.r. stone spoke to some seniors and distanced himself so some of the sound might be affected. >> i'm not frightened. i have lung issues. >> reporter: barbara morgan, a senior responding to concerns about the coronavirus. the governor on sunday recommending that seniors 65 and over self-isolate in their home,

but barbara is not on the same page. >> if i'm going to get it, i'm going to get it. and i'm not worried about it. and i don't think i can stay in the house for three or four weeks. i think i'll be dead before i get to the virus. >> reporter: while barbara jokes, others say they've already been self-isolating and will continue to do so after they continue to stock up on more food. >> we're doing it, yeah. >> no doubt about it. >> no doubt. >> i think i'm only going to come out if i feel like it's important or necessary. >> i asked for your input on facebook concerning the matter and dozens of you responded. as a physician, i think it's a good idea. in contra costa county staff with meal on wheels are delivering food to seniors because volunteers are calling out at such high rates. >> our services are more critical than ever because the

people we serve are most at risk for the virus. >> reporter: the right approach that should be taken, but so much positivity out there, as well. >> like they say, americans usually survive. when it comes to times like this, everybody seems to be able to pitch in and help each other and what not. >> you saw in that interview right there we are doing our best to keep our distance during the interviews and that is part of the recommendations out there. if you'd like to volunteer for meals on wheels, they urge you to call them. they are looking for volunteers right now. in the newsroom, jr stone, abc 7 news. we know this morning will be a lot different for a lot of people. most large school districts in the bay area have canceled classes and many of those closures start today. julian glover is live at grant elementary school in san jose with how parents, school leaders are adapting to this change.

good morning, julian. >> good morning, kumasi. today is truly the beginning of a new normal for students and teachers all across the bay area and while all the school districts try to figure out how to keep the students learning in the weeks ahead, they want to make one thing clear. if your child needs a meal and something to eat, they can count on their school districts to make sure they are fed. grant elementary is just one of the schools here in the san jose unified school district where students can come get a meal, breakfast or lunch starting tomorrow. that will run monday through friday and it will continue as long as the crisis continues. we're also learning in school districts like oakland unified school says they will have 12 sites to provide a grab and go breakfast and lunch and practically every other schooischool i system will have a similar system when class starts back

up. child care. many parents scrambling to find someone to take care of their kids. if they can't work remotely, those who can stay home with their kids are definitely the lucky ones in this. >> we have a lot of home schooling and a lot of crafts and luckily we have a backyard that we can air out over there. but trying to, you know, keep calm and be living life as normal as possible. >> again, while most public schools systems that don't appear to be signing any work during this temporary shut down in the coming weeks, we know several private school systems are, in fact, continuing with virtual learning. between public and private schools as this crisis continues. certainly just another aspect of this all that we have to work through. reporting live in san jose this morning, i'm julian glover, abc 7 news. san francisco's public schools are working with different partners ensure all

students have access to the internet and computers to finish their lessons. free meals for kids at these 18 sites. the sites have different dates with a number of them opening tomorrow and all of them will be open by thursday. cities across the country are making drastic changes to everyday life because of covid-19. new federal guidelines are expected to be announced today. jobina is live in the news room with more on this. >> good morning, kumasi. some cities are shutting down right now. los angeles are limiting to take out and delivery. grocery stores are still open, but president trump is asking all americans to stop hoarding groceries and other supplies. >> you don't have to buy so much. take it easy. just relax. people are going in and buying more and i remember i guess during the conversation doug of walmart said they buy more than they buy at christmas.

employees can stay safe. but, first, at 4:37. we are taking a live look outside right now at sfo. sending it over to mike for a check of the weather. looks a little rainy out there, mike. >> damp today, especially during the morning hours. hi, everybody. we'll start with live doppler 7. you can see some of the heavier cells for our super commuters and wet from tracy all the way in and look at the snow falling at the higher elevations of the east bay. now, let's take a look at what's going on in other areas. start with the bridges, benicia bridge, the carquinez bridge and the richmond san rafael all have rain as you can see right now on live doppler 7. let's keep going down. and here you can see we've got, well, come on, radar. i don't know, something's happenings there. some reason the radar just dropped out and wouldn't let me see if i could readjust these

and get the radar back on line. there you can see the bay bridge, the san mateo bridge are all wet and let me get this one. fixed also. some reason the radar dropped out of that. there you go. you can see the dum barton bridge and 237 and 280 and 101 in the south bay all wet. here's a look at your commute. the western span of the bay bridge from south beach is definitely wet. we have standing water out there. caution for mass transt and for the bay commute and we will have soggy spots and we will also have showers mainly all day today with the heaviest and steadiest rain this morning. let's get over to jobina. good morning. >> good morning. we have a live look coming up here of the bay bridge toll plaza for you. we are doing traffic a little differently today because we do not expect to see a heavy flow of traffic due to so many people staying home for work due to the coronavirus. so, again, here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. light conditions out there.

if you have to travel today anywhere across the state, more likely you'll run into a valley rain and mountain snow. here's a look at future radar and the temperatures.

you can see a lot of people in the 50s until you get down to socal and 72 in palm springs. one of our driest spots. valley rain, mountain snows and winter storm warnings for yosemite and tahoe. this goes through 11:00 tomorrow morning. in fact, we also have an avalanche warning around tahoe. so, those people trying to get up there. nearly impossible to get there. once you get there, not really great to be skiing in the back country because of what could happen there. look at this, up to another 15, 16 inches of snow possible. all right. let's take a look at the seven-day forecast and what you're going to see are a whole lot of chances of snow that taper as we head to thursday and friday and pick up again saturday and sunday. kumasi. now to the presidential eletion, it was a pretty unusual debate. what was once a crowded field of candidates now just down to two and because of coronavirus fears, there was no audience. here's abc news reporter andrea.

>> reporter: the pause joe biden and bernie sanders greeted each other with elbow bumps and podiums six feet apart in a largely empty room in washington, d.c., amidst covid-19 concerns. both candidates agreed more must be done to combat this health crisis. sanders criticizing president trump. >> he's undermining the doctors and the scientists trying to help the american people. unacceptable for him to be blabbering with unfactual information which is confusing the general public. >> the presideent system cannot handle the surge that is likely to come. we should already be sitting down and planning where we're going to put these temporary hospitals. >> reporter: both men in their 70s ask how they're protecting themselves during this pandemic. >> i love doing rally and we bring many thousands of people out to our rallies. we're not doing that right now. in fact, our entire staff is working from home. >> reporter: biden pointed out that unlike sanders recent heart attack, he is in good health.

safe. union square was pretty much empty yesterday with only a few stragglers in site. nike plans to close its stores today through next friday and apple closed all of its stores for two weeks. urban outfitters is closed until further notice. restaurants are struggling but now offering customers a new way to order food. >> they can order online and pay online and have curbside pickup. you don't need to be around other people. you can stay in your car and call when you pull up. your food is ready. >> reporter: walmart and safeway stores have reduced their hours. california casinos are closing to help slow the spread of the virus, too. california grand is closed as of today. it plans to reopen on april 1st. oaks card club in emeryville

closed and cash creek casino resort in yellow county will also temporarily close starting tomorrow. a lot to keep track of but we're doing our best to make sure you can up to date on everything when it comes to coronavirus and our weather. checking in with mike. let's talk about temperatures. we haven't done that quite yet. we talked about how much it is going to rain. let's look at our high temperatures. low to mid-50s with rounds of showers and thunderstorms today and high mountain snows possibly down to around 2,500 feet. definitely want to keep those warmer. jackets around and ones that can keep you dry if you do have have to venture outside. the umbrella will be fine today. the winds won't pick up too much. we won't have much in the way of sideways rain. an umbrella should keep you fairly dry. tonight are little cooler than this morning. all those mid to upper 30s and low to mid 40s as you get closer to places like oakland and

richmond and half moon bay and santa cruz and otherwise pretty chilly out there. notice the amount of rain does taper just a little bit as we head into the overnight hours. in fact, here's a look at what we expect precipitation wise for the rest of today. you can see up to 0.2 and maybe some isolated areas if you get under a thunderstorm up to a third of an inch and as we head towards tomorrow another 0.1 is possible. we've seen the heaviest of the rain out of this storm and right now more scattered showers and thunderstorms that will become even less likely tomorrow. quick look at the seven-day forecast and you can see a little bit of a break wednesday, thursday and friday before more rain saturday and sunday. we'll take a longer look at this coming up next. let's get back to kumasi. the coronavirus impact is spreading to sin city. mgm resorts announced it will suspend for its properties starting tomorrow. mgm says no reservations are
