self-quarantine. all campuses starting with online classes with the exception of labs and studio classes. more than 20 school districts are closing starting today. san francisco unified school distri district, oakland unified school district and fremont. you can find more school closures on the ticker that is rolling at the bottom of your screen and by going to our website, abc7news.com. governor newsom announced new restrictions to encourage social distancing and stop the spread of the virus. jobina is live in the newsroom with more. >> with more cases of coronavirus being reported, newsom announced three new strategies to keep people safe. first, he's urging everyone 65 and older to stay home. seniors and people with compromised immune systems are most at risk from dying at coronavirus and home isolation could reduce that risk. the governor is also asking bars, wineries, night clubs and brew pubs to temporarily close. he said closing these establishments will keep people from each other.

restaurants are allowed to remain open. governor newsom says those that deliver are especially needed to help people that cannot leave their homes. >> restaurants by definition provide those points of access. so, having an organized contrukt that allows delivery of hot, prepared and nutritious food within an existing infustru infrastructure is appropriate to this moment. >> also asked restaurants to operate at half occupancy. you will be seated far apart to encourage social distancing, which is what we're also doing here. >> thanks, jobina. on top of the bar, club and wine winery closures the coffee business will make some changes. amy hollyfield is live in san francisco's west portal neighborhood. good morning, amy. >> hi, good morning, reggie. coffee shops are still open, but

you are discouraged from gathering, lingering there. starbucks is switching to a to-go model. no chairs, no stables and look at the tape they put up to block that bench seating over there. they do not want you to come here and sit and hang out. they want you in and out. we're at vicente and west portal. the starbucks is open but they want you in and out. but coffee shops have not been told to close down like bars have. the governor announcing yesterday that bars should close, calling them nonessential. this is a blow to them, obviously, especially for st. patrick's day. but one bar owner we spoke with says he gets it. >> i totally believe it's the right thing to do and what i'm really hoping is that the measures we take now will prevent things from being much worse later. >> restaurants are still allowed to stay open, but the governor wants them to reduce the number of people allowed inside. he said they should take out

some tables and move the remaining ones further away from each other. coffee shops, though, not mentioned in his directive. so, as you see, this starbucks is open. but it is making some changes. no seating. just in and out and blue bottle coffee shops are closing for the next two weeks. they're just shutting down in two weeks they will reevaluate. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. american cities are making drastic changes to everyday life to combat the spread of coronavirus. efforts are under way from the federal government and health care industry. for more here's alex. >> overnight some american cities virtually shutting down. the governor closing the school system for 1 million plus children. ohio closing all bars and restaurants. illinois only allowing take out and california calling on all bars and wineries to close while requesting home isolation for everyone 65 and over.

overreacting a bit to keep up with it. >> reporter: the first covid-19 vaccine trial starts today in seattle. though it's just phase one any approval of a vaccine could take up to 18 months. alex. the national security council is dispelling rumors of a national quarantine. this is the very latest tweet from last night. a text is being forwarded around of a lockdown over the next couple days. it is fake and you should follow the cdc for the latest guidance. the grand princess cruise ship is still docked in oakland. here is a live look this morning. governor newsom announcing yesterday that the ship would leave around 7:00 last night. plans call for the "grand princess" to sail to the middle of san francisco bay and anchor there. healthy crew members would then be taken off and .

east bay union leaders are mad about a new plan to unload garbage from "grand princess" and take it down city streets. that agreement called for unloading trash on to barges and then hauling it to amaretime disposable site and now the port wants to do the job differently. >> also feel a rush to get this thing done and ship out of here without taking the proper procedures and that could endanger people's lives. >> we have been told several different stories about this cruise ship that have turned out to be untrue or unverified. >> abc 7 news has reached out to the port of oakland, but officials have not responded yet to a request for a statement. all right. let's take a look at what is going on weather wise. you can see on live doppler 7 heavier rain as you head out towards discovery bay and tracy through the altmont pass and also mt. diablo.

all of our bridges are wet, richmond, carquinez, bay bridge, san mateo bridge, dumbarton and 237 not a bridge, but goes east to west across the south bay. all wet this morning. in fact, here's a look at 87 as we look at south of maneta and the spray they're kicking up. if you have to be out whether you're running errands, exercising or doing some chores, just know waves of showers that will keep us dodging drops all throughout the day. look how cool these temperatures are. in the 40s through at least 11:00 in the north bay and barely making it to 53. also notice our steadiest rain is through about 9:00, 10:00 this morning and then the scattered showers and thunderstorms take over. the east bay will be in the 40s through 1:00. barely making it into the low 50s for a couple hours this afternoon. and here's a look at san francisco. we're stuck in the 40s through at least 1:00 and then some low-to mid-50s from about 2:00 to 7:00. i've got more chances of rain

it's 5:13. if you're just joining us, new restrictions to deal with the coronavirus pandemic. governor newsom announced yesterday seniors should stay at home. he also wants bars and wineries to close and restaurants will operate at half capacity rve. number two. coffee shops were not mentioned in the governor's address but starbucks is moving to a to-go model and blue bottle is indefinitely closed starting this morning. more than 20 school districts in the bay area closed and that starts today.

many will conduct classes online. before the grand princess cruise ship is still docked in oakland. here's a live look at it this morning. this follow governor newsom's announcement yesterday that the ship will leave around 7:00 last night. plans called for the grand princess to move to the middle of the san francisco bay and anchor. extra steps to protect president trump and his staff from the virus. anyone entering the white house will have to take their temperature taken whether it is a visitor or news reporter. we have the potenti weather and here's what to expect with our storm impact scale. a look at the last hour. you can see rain and mountain snow steady all throughout the morning. and number seven. up here from the newsroom, i am checking in on traffic. light but still slick conditions due to the rain. so, if you're headed into work this morning, take your time out there and be safe. as we've been telling you, state and federal health officials are recommending that

we all practice social distancing to keep each other safe from coronavirus. i checked win dr. patel part of the abc 7 team of experts to explain just what social distancing means. >> the novel coronavirus covid-19 has now spread around the world. the world health organization has officially declared a pandemic. the coronavirus is transmitted by droplets from coughs and sneezes. the best way to prevent getting it is by practice social distancing. but what is social distancing? >> social distancing is the term we're using right now that is essentially everyone doing their best to stay away from large crowds while we're trying to reduce the spread of this disease coronavirus. >> reporter: imagine a crowded room full of people, everyone in the room is healthy except this person. they are infected with the coronavirus but they don't know it. they shake hands with half the people in the room and let's say half of those people get

infected. over the next five days, those people go on with their lives. some develop what seems like a cold and others have no idea they're sick, but they're spreading that coronavirus along the way. infecting friends and family and strangers without ever knowing it. that's what health experts say an outbreak. social distancing keeps the number of people in that crowded room from ever being infected by, well, not being crowded. >> social distancing is almost like everyone's responsibility. the role they play in slowing the spread of coronavirus. >> reporter: social distancing is not the same as self-quarantine or isolation. that's when public health officials order you to stay away from other people because you are infected. social distancing means thinking about the impact you might have on others if you do get coronavirus. the cdc recommends keeping six to ten feet away from other people. >> if you are on an airplane or

a bus, for example, are you going to choose a seat that is closer to a group of people or try to keep a little bit of distance, six feet away? if you, for example, go to dinner. are you going to try to go to a table in the corner or go to a bar and sit up at the counter next to a bunch of people. if you want to go to the gym, for example, are you going to try to go when there is a lot of people because that's when it's convenient or try to go at a less busy hour when you can keep your distance from someone. so, this is something that people will go through in their minds for every activity they have whether it's work, play, meet ups, whatever it may be. >> reporter: stay safe and stay away from each other. really, though. >> clearly, we're in the boxes. >> yes. we've been waving at each other, though. >> i know, friend. i can still hear you. we can chat during the break. >> i'm sure you've been doing this, too, i have been using facetime. >> yes. >> good way to keep in touch with people so you feel

showers and thunderstorms tomorrow. still cool wednesday, thursday and friday. the fourth, fifth weekend in a row that we had wet weather. for today low to mid-50s. as cool as 52 and 51 in morgan hill to about 55 in fremont. oakland 56 and 55 in santa rosa and concord, antioch and livermore along with san mateo. tonight temperatures even cooler than this morning. look at these upper 30s to low 50s. but notice the coverage of rain is not going to be quite as much as this morning. here's our area of low pressure. the clouds. here's a look at the radar. scooping up moisture and bringing that to us from southwest to northeast. so, here we go through time and you can see the steadier rain apers to showers, especially off shore at noon. and then notice how they rotate on shore as we head into the evening hours. overnight, a little bit of a lull. come in tomorrow morning and a few showers out there and then we get a little sunshine and that creates more showers and thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon. so, wednesday, thursday, friday.

dry temperatures in the low to mid-60s warmer but still wet this weekend. >> thanks, mike. north bay wineries already hurt by devastating wildfires in recent years are also on that list of businesses governor newsom called to shut down. we spoke to a number of wineries still figuring out what they're going to do now. chandon, domaine open for now. lloyd davis owner of corner 103 winery and tasting room. as a small business owner producing 2,000 cases a year he had a suspicion a shut down was coming and prepared by increasing his online presence and by making other preparations. >> and we're offering shipping discounts to make that more cost neutral to them. and we're working with, also, the chamber of commerce and the business bureau because this is a time where we all need the

stepping outside. everything is wet this morning. even the north day where you don't see the greatest radar returns. it is raining up there. as you put it into motion, you can see a little bit of a dry line trying to develop, but the next several hours, we're going to have steadier rain and then becomes more showery in nature. in fact, the possibility of thunderstorms until 5:00 tomorrow and the area shaded right here. locally heavy rain and gusty breezes and more standing water. as we head from 5:00 tomorrow to 5:00 wednesday, you can see a line from discovery bay through dublin to san mateo bay and southward has the best chance of thunderstorms. kumasi? all major u.s. sports have called time-out or flat out

canceled their seasons because of coronavirus. today major league baseball is holding a conference call with teams to discuss how to handle their upcoming season. the league is expected to advise all player organized workouts for now and decided last week to pause spring training and the regular season for at least two weeks. the second nba super star with coronavirus provided an update. donovan is sharing his experiences with "gma." >> biggest thing for me to stay in isolation and keep to myself. i have no symptoms which is a unique situation. >> no symptoms now and you had no symptoms when you were tested. you didn't feel ill at all? >> no. i keep making the joke when people ask me, if you were to told me i would play in a seven-game series tomorrow, i would be ready to lace up. >> mitchell was confirmed to have the virus after teammate rudy gobert tested positive.

jobina is upstairs in the news room. it feel s like she is far. >> another floor. >> come back, friend. this is really all just to keep everybody safe because of coronavirus. we'll get to the very latest on covid-19 and what is happening in a moment. first, checking in with mike who is also far away. >> we joke. but in all seriousness, we're practicing what we preach and that's trying to set a good example. sorry, jobina, you're upstairs by yourself. some of the darker green you can see on highway 4 on 242 and 680 and 24 and also on 880. put this into motion. you can see steady rain throughout the morning hours. the heaviest moving through the central valley. look at all the snow down to around 28, 2,700 feet. in the santa cruz mountains you'll run into some snow if you have to travel through there. this is moving us six hours into the future and the storm impact scale on here for today and tomorrow. showers, thunderstorms, graupel

and hail and storm level will climb to 3,000 feet. a lot of people on the roads 680 heading south out of walnut creek and you can see steady rain this morning and temperatures 40 to 44. mid 40s to 50 with showers and thunderstorms this afternoon with temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s. reggie. >> thanks, mike. the latest headlines on coronavirus. the cdc is recommending all events nationwide with more than 50 people be canceled for the next eight weeks. that would go all the way until may 10th. here in the bay area there would be no elective surgeries at their four east bay hospitals for at least two weeks. that's to prepare for a possible surge of coronavirus patients. calastoga are announced they are canceling classes for several weeks.

two cases at travis air force base. san francisco state also confirmed an employee tested positive for the virus. here are the current confirmed coronavirus cases throughout the bay area. last night the mayor of gilroy confirmed an elderly person has died after contracting coronavirus. that person is one of two cases in gilroy. santa clara county has a total of 114 cases. that is the most in our state. marin county announced four additional cases bringing their total to nine. sonoma county announced a fifth case. community transmitted. san francisco has 37 cases, including two ucsf health care workers. san mateo county has 32 cases which includes the death it reported yesterday. and alameda county reported 19. governor newsom announced a plan and ordering bars, clubs and wineries to shut down and restaurants have to reduce their capacity. in addition he's asking seniors

and those at high risk to isolate themselves at home. >> we have the capacity to still be productive in this society, but we need to protect those that are most vulnerable to this virus. >> newsom said the state is setting up a system to get food to seniors who are homebound. the state has more than 5 million seniors age 65 and higher. he also said california will buy more motels and trailers for homeless people to get that population out of encampments. mixed reaction to the governor's recommendation that they stay home. abc 7 news reporter jr stone spoke with some seniors and distanced himself and some of the sound may be affected. >> i'm not frightened. >> that's good. >> and i have lung issues. >> reporter: barbara morgan, a senior, responding to concerns about the coronavirus. the governor on sunday recommending that seniors 65 and over self-isolate in their home.

but barbara is not on the same page. >> if i'm going to get it, i'm going to get it. and i'm not worried about it. and i don't think i can stay in the house for three or four weeks. i think i'll be dead before i get to the virus. >> reporter: while barbara jokes, others say they've already been self-isolated and will continue to do so after they stock up on more food. >> we're doing it. yeah. >> no doubt about it. >> no doubt. >> i think i'm only going to come out if i feel like it's important or necessary. >> reporter: i asked for your input on facebook concerning the matter and dozens of you responded. dr. sofia mohammad even saying as a physician, i think it's a good idea. in contra costa county staff with meals on wheels are delivering food to seniors because volunteers are calling out sick at such high rates. >> right now our services are more critical than ever because the people we serve are most at risk for the virus.

>> reporter: so many mixed opinions about the virus, the right approach that should be taken. but so much pause tositivity ou there, as well. >> like they say, americans usually survive. when it comes to times like this, everybody seems to be able to pitch in and help each other and what not. >> yeah. >> reporter: you saw it in that interview right there, we are doing our best right now to keep our distance during our interviews. part of the recommendations that are out there. if you'd like to volunteer for meals on wheels in contra costa county, they urge you to call them. they're looking for volunteers right now. in the newsroom, jr stone, abc 7 news. we know this morning will be de different for a lot of people. most large school districts in the bay area have canceled classes and most of those closures start today. abc 7 news reporter julian glover is live at grant elementary school with how students and parents and school leaders are adapting to this new

normal. >> good morning. welcome to the new normal for students and teachers all across the bay area with many and most of our school districts out of classes. as they all grapple with how they plan on keeping learning going while schools are out. we do know one thing for sure, pretty much every school district saying if your child needs a meal, they can depend on their local school district to give them one. grant elementary here in san jose will be one of the ten schools where meals will be handed out starting tomorrow for anyone 18 or younger. we know a similar set up will be happening with oakland unified schools. they are telling us they will have 12 sites up and ready to go providing grab and go breakfast and lunch service running monday through friday. practically every school disyst will have a similar set up until classes start back up. child care for parents many of them likely finding someone to

take care of their child if they can have to go to work. >> we have a lot of home schooling to do. we have a lot of crafts to do. and likely we have a backyard that we can like air out over the there. but trying to, you know, keep calm and be living life as normal as possible. >> again, while most public schools don't appear to be assigning work while their students will be out for the next several weeks, at least two to three weeks. we know many of the private school systems are going forward so learning can continue while they're out of class. that will learn the public schools that stopped and the private school learning continues as we deal with the coronavirus crisis. i'm julian glover, abc 7 news. >> thank you. more on what is happening with schools. san francisco's public schools are working with different partners to ensure all students have access to computers and the internet so they can complete

through pretty close to walnut creek and from richmond and down to berkeley and emeryville and as you head down into the south bay look at the snow in the santa cruz mountains. it's possible on the summit even though it's below where it would stick it could melt by the time it gets there. don't be surprised if you see some fat drops or flakes hit your windshield as you're driving through there. san mateo bridge how wet it is and here's a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see how wet that is, also. poor conditions with standing water this morning and then even for mass transit and the bay commute, you need caution. it will be wet for the better part of the day. south bay in the 40s through 11:00. a good chance and repeat of steadier rain this afternoon. you have one of the better chances of that. east bay valleys in the 40s through 1:00 with scattered showers and low 50s to mid-50s this afternoon. and the peninsula steady rain through 9:00 in the 40s through 11:00 and then showers

they can order online and pay online and have curbside pickup. you don't need to be around other people. >> that is a great idea. walmart and safeway stores have also reduced their hours. the coronavirus impact is spreading to sin city. mgm resorts announced it will suspend operations for all of its vegas properties. that starts tomorrow. no opening date has been given, but no reservations are being taken before may 1st. wynn is temporarily shutting down for two weeks and seizers is suspending live entertainment for this month. that is extreme. when las vegas is closing its casinos, you know we're taking this very serious. >> we're on a lock down getting pretty close. almost no reason to go out any more if you have your supplies and stay home and watch us and we'll keep you updated on what is going on. in san jos 1.25.

showers and thunderstorms develop. overnight, we'll calm down just a little bit. little drizzle possible and tomorrow you can see really we're going to be dependent on the sunshine to help energize the atmosphere with fewer showers and thunderstorms than today. still in the low to mid-50s through wednesday with dry weather. back to average by friday. we stay in the 60s over the weekend but another one on the storm impact scale saturday and sunday. thank you, mike. b.a.r.t. is reassuring riders their crews are cleaning trains and social distancing is possible. the agency says it's running trains on a normal schedule despite seeing a steep decline in ridership over the past week. there were just over 58,000 riders, a 61% drop compared to previous saturdays. that was over the weekend. b.a.r.t. says it's going to keep running longer trains to give people space and continue with track maintenance work. it's monitoring stations and platforms adding they are being cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis. reggie?
