only central businesses are able to stay open and that includes grocery stores, pharmacies, doctor offices and hospitals, and banks, auto stations can also stay open. restaurants can stay open but with takeout only. >> these rules were crafted with great thought and care and very quickly. >> businesses that do not provide an essential service have to send employees home, and that includes bars, clubs and entertainment venues. >> restaurants can still do takeout, as you mentioned, but some restaurants are choosing to close altogether. our abc reporter is live with that story in san jose. julian. >> reporter: good morning, reggie. seems like for the first night of the shelter in place order, both businesses and residents here in san jose have taken it seriously. we have seen a number of

nonessential businesses, gyms, bars closed this morning. and we are seeing restaurants closed down, and they were given the okay to stay open and operate in a takeout capacity, but they have closed some of their doors. and we have videos showing signs with a message, and the old wagon saloon and grill saying due to the outbreak we will be closed until april 6th. and the music venue shutdown, and the shelter in place is affecting businesses in six bay area counties, including a bakery. >> it's very scary. i don't know what is going to happen. a lot of businesses are worried if they can come back after this, and my staff is super understanding, and everybody is going to file unemployment for

the lay off and open flhopefull will be back up. >> reporter: back here in san jose we saw a number of san jose pd cars driving around reminding everybody of the shelter in place order. and as you see, there is still recycle and garbage collection happening in san jose, so those essential services are still up and running even in the middle of the shelter in place order. for now reporting live in san jose this morning, julian glover, abc7 news. and then waste collection officials say they are operating the same routes on the same schedule, and waiste officials say you can do your part by crushing cans and breaking down cardboard boxes to make sure the trucks have plenty of space. marin reported two more

cases and two more deaths in santa clara county. there are 138 total cases there. president trump now admits the coronavirus could be around for many more months, and to prevent the spread of the disease, the governor is giving new restrictions. >> there are more than 4,600 confirmed cases in the u.s. right now. today the senate is expected to take up an emergency bill that has passed in the senate, and trump says the disease could linger into the summer. the white house coronavirus response coordinator called on millennials to help on "gma" this morning. >> right now we need the army of millennials out there doing everything they can to protect themselves from getting infected, because we know a lot

pop-up showers this afternoon, and again with the wettest of the forecast coming this weekend. mid to upper 50s, still 5 to 8 degrees below average. tonight almost as cold as this morning. we will have a little more cloud cover and showers. they are hugging the peninsula this morning, and tonight they are going to be in the north bay that will keep you warmer. here's a look at the shower, as you head up 101 or 280 towards burlingame, this is starting to fall apart. you can see the shield shrinking and retracting back out over the ocean. 7:00, barely any rain left, and then by noon we are seeing a regeneration of the higher elevations, and those will roll off to the east in the afternoon hours.

history. it shedded nearly 3,000 points in one day as the coronavirus p pandemic is causing fears of a recession. and it has calmed down. it's still up but not at 700 points. analysts are saying do not think this is going to be solving anything, that it looks like a bear market bounce, and not the coming of the dawn. so just have realistic expectations. here in the bay area, an unprecedented shelter in place order is now in effect. 7 million people in six counties are being told to stay home. >> by staying home you reduce your risk of becoming exposed. >> all nonessential businesses forced to close for three weeks, and all of us urged to practice social distancing if you have to

shelter in place order came down yesterday. who is in there now, birds? >> reporter: there's a lot of people for 6:00 in the morning. take a look at the video we shot at 5:45, and there was a line of people that gathered to be here when the store opened. the store is opening at 6:00 a.m., later than usual to give them time to restock. all of these people got here early because they just had trouble getting what they need at the stores because it has been so busy, but you can guess what the number one item they wanted was, and we interviewed david and let's listen what he was here for. >> just missing toilet paper. that's the only thing i am missing. i just had to get here early to get some. >> reporter: you have heard you will get some? >> no, just hoping.

>> reporter: well, no luck for him this morning. you see the shelves, the toilet paper shelves completely empty, and the pasta aisles are empty as well. employees tell me they did not get a shipment of dry goods today, but they do expect it tomorrow. they say if you want it you have to get here right when they open. but the california grocery retailers association is really wanting everybody to calm down, slow down their buying. they want everybody to know there's enough stuff, enough items out there, but they can't keep up with the pace in stocking the shelves, so they say please slow down and just buy what you need, and because of the demand there are now new job openings. safeway is hiring 2,000 people to help cover this intensity manned. >> thank you, amy. one of the biggest concerns

for many during the shelter in place is how to get around as the bay area shuts down. bart will continue regular service so essential employees like health care providers can get to work. the city's human services agencies is working on quarantine plans for people homeless and people living in communal spaces. the number of coronavirus cases is increasing in california and expected to go up again today. 557 people in the state tested positive, and nearly 300 of those cases are here in the bay area. the governor also called for tighter restrictions statewide. he wants all dine-in restaurants, health clubs and gyms to close. the governor issued a executive order for

>> this doesn't mean that people won't have to pay their rent but it could help delay payments in some cases. the order is in effect through the end of may. in washington today the senate may take up the coronavirus response bill. it would give paid emergency leave and free testing to those affected by the coronavirus. the house passed the bill last night, and that includes speeding up cash for hard-hit small businesses. a clinical trial is under way in seattle for a coronavirus vaccine. jennifer holler is the first volunteer to get the shot. >> we all feel so helpless and wondering what we can do to help people right now, and as soon as i saw the study was available, i filled out an application and had my fingers crossed that i would be eligible to participate. >> holler will get another shot in about a month.

doctor was diagnosed with covid-19 after attending a national conference for er doctors. the doctor is a 32-year-old, and his symptoms are mild and is saying home, but he is concerned he may have exposed other doctors at the conference, and as referenced in the headline you can see that there. the conference was in new york city slightly over a week ago before he started showing symptoms. we reached out for comment on the story and will provide updates for you today on abc7news.com as well as on the abc 7 news app. with the shelter in place now in effect restaurants cannot serve customers in their dining rooms. they can still do takeout but some are deciding they are going to close altogether. julian is live for us in san jose. >> reporter: we know those restaurants were deemed essential businesses so they were going to be able to stay
