>> it's the slowest it's been in over a year and a half that i've been here. >> sonoma county likely joining the bay area shelter in place order as soon as wednesday night. the restaurant is changing up food service during the pandemic. >> we're offering where we can drop it off and send you a photo with your text message where your food is at your front door. >> sonoma county posted this on its facebook page, that most sonoma county fa and city facilities will temporarily close starting march 17th. there were still signs of life downtown, people and cars. but jeweller nate auerbach says things are weird and too quiet. >> it's very reminiscent of the fires in 2017 and of course again last year. not a lot of people wandering around right now. >> he is worried what his employees will do during a possible three-week closure. >> we're going to take care of everybody as long as we can, but we obviously can't float this forever. >> many residents are getting ready to stay home. >> i'm just trying to get the necessary things that you need to survive. i think that's what a lot of

that is not the case tonight. we did speak to a number of people who all right letting the bay area shelter in place bring them down. at santana row in san jose, it looked like a holiday, but without the tree or lights to lift people's spirits. >> it's a very eerie feeling to walk on santana row. usually this is a place that is bustling with people. you have people all over. >> some businesses remain open for business for curbside delivery or doordash. including mediterranean and left bank brasserie. >> we need to make sure that they're taken care of so they can in turn take care of our guests. >> just down the road, zazil, which is only a month old is also adapting by offering a special menu for takeout. >> we're reinventing ourselves to make sure we can continue with our strong pace that we started off with. and more than anything, we just want to be here for the customers. >> and it's not just the

restaurants that are switching it up. barry's, a an indoor fitness studio which recently opened at santana row typically draws around 40 people per class multiple times a day. but with the studio closed for the time being -- >> it's an opportunity for us to really become closer as people. >> reporter: instructor and personal trainer rio hall is posting at-home workouts on instagram to help clients maintain a sense of community. >> that same kind of spirit of community that we have in the room, i've been able to really see small sense stay connected through the internet. it's really been beautiful. >> these folks still finding a way to give back, even in times of uncertainty. >> we're in the hospitality business. it's not time for us to equipment. it's time for us to show what we do and be there for everybody. >> at this point, nearly every restaurant that remains open in the bay area could use your help. so you might want to check out them for a takeout or consider buying a gift card that you can use at a later date.

abc7 news reporter luz pena is live for us in san francisco where she checked out some tourist destinations. and luz, what a difference 24 hours can make. luz, good evening. >> hi, chris. fisherman's wharf at this time would be packed 24 hours ago. that is not the case today. every store around us closed. we found notices like this one on every door. our city that is always buzzing came to a halt today. it hasn't been 24 hours since the shelter in place directive, but many are already feeling it. day one of shelter in place, how you? >> i'm doing good. i'm busy, just mostly working. this morning i went out for a run. >> we compared and contrasted san francisco's most iconic places. the golden gate bridge, where thousands transit, now empty. lombard street today, what a sight. and union square like a ghost town, once shopped, now with

security guards inside the stores. as we drove around the city, we saw several police officers doing rounds. >> very quiet. >> nothing crazy happening? >> not yet. >> and with empty streets, security is a concern to many. in a statement, sfpd said in part, we will be doing passing calls throughout the city to reinforce public safety. we will adapt our deployment strategies as the situation evolves in the coming weeks. and even though this is not a complete lockdown with people able to walk outside their homes for essentials, like walking their dogs, doing exercise and going to the grocery store, this glimpse into the rest of the city shows how the coronavirus has become top of mind for our community. >> if everybody does it, it's going to slow this thing down. >> we have more time to stay together, because we don't have school and it's canceled and we're going to be in the same house with all of our family members. so it's a great time to really get together. >> #familybonding. >> and it is all about that

family bonding. because this is our new reality until april 7th. so let's be kind to each other and keep a safe distance. in san francisco, luz pena, abc7 news. >> all right, luz, thank you so much. droneview7 flew above fisherman's wharf earlier today. it's officially closed because of the shelter in place. you can see a few bicyclists cycling in the middle of the street. nearby check out this view of pier 39. usually it's filled with tourists, but it's empty now. remember, seeing public place empty is a good thing. it means people are staying home and doing their part to help flatten the curve. >> that is exactly right. east bay community journalist melissa pixcar visited several places to see what life is like during this shelter in place order. here is her report from oakland. >> everyone, it is currently 2:05 in the afternoon. i just got to lake merritt here in oakland. there are still a lot of people out here. a lot of people are out walking

their dog, jogging. i don't see a lot of people in groups. the most i am seeing are people are walking around in pairs. but other than that, it's kind of seems like a normal day here in oakland. >> and bars have had to close up shop. some have boarded up. abc7 news was outside starline social club in oakland where plywood now covers the windows. and not far away the legionnaire's saloon on telegraph is boarded up. bars have been ordered to close during the shelter in place order. they may be prepared for problems, but alameda county spokesperson ray kelly today said it's been calm so far. >> we're not seeing any type of craziness going on out there. so people get it. they understand that they play an important role in us doing this fight. so we're so appreciative of that. >> now sky 7 is live over the bay area right now to give you a view of traffic as we speak. this is 880 of course by oracle arena, where the warriors used to play.

and look at this. at 6:10 in the evening along i-80, it is almost sparse. it is actually sparse out there. very few maybuer-ters know along 80 at this time in the height of the evening commute. we have seen this scene repeated all over the bay area. people are heeding the shelter in place order in larger numbers. and certainly authorities want all of us to cooperate in this regard. i saw it coming into the city today along main street and market street, which would normally be packed with people there may be a dozen people walking around at that intersection at the most. so people clearly as we have seen around the bay area today are paying close attention. as you look live from sky 7, as we pull back down there, is the parking lot for the oracle arena. and the stadium. and as you can see, very few cars. probably if i had to guess, 10% of the normal number of cars that we might see at 6:00 at night on an evening commute on

stores. we caught nabila's trucks, another at birite market on divisadero. >> so far we've been able to get our deliveries in. we're not getting the full orders that we put in, but we're getting a lot of it. >> what are you hearing from your distribuors? >> we have plenty of food. plenty of food in san francisco and the bay area. plenty of food. our farmers are not stretched yet. >> the supply is there. the demand just causing a bottleneck. a wholesaler for nuts and butter says he has no plans to stop his deliveries. >> my sales are almost like double from normal. >> at this birite in san francisco, they have to limit the customer, but not their supplies. a greeter tells coming in only 35 people at a time allowed inside. and they must practice social distancing. i went inside to see for myself. >> every aisle was stocked.

roof. with no classes in session, san francisco schools are providing free meals to all children 18 and younger at eight sites around the city. many are getting lessons in a different kind of classroom like this oakland family. their daughter maya is a seventh grader and joins her classmates through a video chat platform called zoom. her son joshua's fourth grade material is proving to be more hands-on. >> i'm going teach the way i know thou teach that was overwhelming, feeling like i want to make sure my child is prepared for school. at the same time, i'm not a teach earp. >> and she says she created an excel spreadsheet to organize breaks and walks from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. >> san francisco unified school ditrict is opening 18 food pickup sites across is the city. the district will provide free breakfast, lunch and pantry items to all children 18 and younger. >> students will need to eat even though school is closed. and right now of course grocery stores are pretty empty too. so there is a really high need

in our community. >> they will be open monday through friday from 9 to 10:00 a.m. no proof of id is required but a child must be present. this is intended for children, after all. families will not need to enter the school buildings in order to get this food. with schools closed around the bay area because of covid-19, most students are learning from home, but not everyone has access to high speed internet or even a computer. melanie woodrow is digging into the data. she is live in the newsroom now with how one company is stepping up to shrink the digital divide. melanie? >> we're talking about free wifi, no disconnects or late fees, even highly subsidized or free computers. it's just a few resources available to the hundreds of thousands of bay area students now learning at home. >> i'm nathaniel. i'm 10 years old, and this is the first day of home schooler or remote learning. >> children all over the bay area are transforming their homes into schools for the

foreseeable future as the region attempts to flatten the covid-19 curve. >> here i'm starting with writer's workshop. >> some of the work doesn't require a computer, but much of it did. >> milk comes from cows. cows are animals. >> according to u.s. 2018 census data, across the bay area, about 15% of households don't have high speed internet access required to stream videos. 4% don't have a computer. together, that's more than one million families whose kids might not have access to reliable online learning tools. rural areas have even morehouse holds without high speed internet. >> it's going to be at least three or four weeks of this. >> which is why that access is so critical right now. >> very excited that we can offer internet access to those who may not have it. >> comcast has taken several steps to make sure every child has access from hot spots to unlimited data to all customers

is working from home. he joins us with insight into how that might work. michael? >> hey, guys. the president says he wants every american to receive direct cash payments. now to make up for a loss of income and a slowdown in businesses. what isn't clear is how much we'll get and who will get it. and whether income limits might apply. which would really affect a lot of people here in the bay area. democrats suggested payments of around $4500. senator mitt romney has proposed $1,000. the idea is to help workers and prop up a coronavirus-hit economy. now it won't cure-all our ills, but economists, bank rate.com says it will help. >> under the best of times, most americans are living paycheck to paycheck. and now we have a situation where some americans are having to go without a paycheck at all. and so i do think that it makes a difference. it's not going to be a panacea.

sympathetic ear at the friendship line which operates across the bay area. isolation is the new norm. you know people are hold up at home. some op them are alone. seniors in in particular have lost access to activity and lunch programs where they can socialize and share their worries. where do they turn now? >> we're putting a lot of concern nationally on the economic recession or the threat of that, but there is also the threat of the emotional recession. >> patrick created the friendship line 47 years ago at the institute on aging. its staff and volunteers have seen a substantial increase in calls from seniors who need to express their anxiety about needing someone to comfort them. >> one woman was talking to me today about being a child in the whole duck and cover era, you know, from when we were, you know, 7 or 8 years old, and how scary that was. and she said i'm feeling that same way. she said i'm feeling like a child that is scared and i want my mother. >> the friendship line takes

calls from all over the bay area, nearly a quarter million calls last year. the volunteers now work at home instead of the call center to conform to social distancing. but their reassuring voices are there. some are students studying psychology. others are seniors themselves with empathy for their peers. >> we are able to give callers reassurance. we don't give medical advice. we give them a friendly voice, a listening ear, reassuring them that life is going on, and we will always be there for them. >> the hope is that by providing a reassuring voice, the friendship line can prevent a lonely senior from falling into deeper acelati deeper isolation as the entire bay area shelters at home. 800-971-0016. we'll also post the number on our website, abc7news.com. researchers say that isolation can impact a senior's health, suppressing their immune system

and can make them more vulnerable to that coronavirus. we're all concerned about. david louie, abc7 news. >> all right, david, thank you for that. a few countries are being hit as hard by the virus right now as italy. the number of cases has exploded with more than 31,000 right now and 2500 deaths. a week ago today, there were 10,000 cases and 631 deaths. italian journalists fulvio spoke to us from his home in rome. he advises everyone living under a lockdown not to try to escape the virus because you just can't. >> we had cases in italy where someone who was staying in milan thought they could outsmart coronavirus by going to their beach house in sardinia. and as a result, sardinia has more cases of coronavirus than they ever expected. and this has happened all over the country. >> he says his country is paying the price for underestimating the virus and the number of cases, deaths, and the impact on the health care system.

we have breaking news to tell you about now. nevada's governor has just ordered casinos to close. the governor has also ordered restaurants to close, all to stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. nevada has already had one death from coronavirus. long lines formed outside of cannabis dispensaries in san francisco yesterday, but it turns out they will stay open. while we initially told they were considered a nonessential business and would close during the shelter in place order, today the san francisco department of public health tweeted dispensaries can continue to operate as essential businesses during this time while practicing social distancing and other health recommendations. mayor london breed echoed this during a news conference held earlier today. many medical supplies are in short supply, especially in underserved communities. leslie brinkley visited a nonprofit that is getting those badly needed supply out the door

today. >> we've got the head covers. we've got the isolation gowns. >> medshare is usually the guardian angel of medical supplies around the globe. a tsunami, a hurricane? and this nonprofit ships out surplus medical goods donated by hospitals. but now the need is in their own backyard, and the surplus of coronavirus supplies has dwindled down to these final boxes will be picked up by ups tonight and delivered to 46 clinics in california that serve a vulnerable population, including the homeless and the elderly. 12 are right here in the bay area, including a women and children's shelter in san leandro, and medical clinics in san francisco, oakland, and berkeley. >> part of what we're hearing is there is a gap in supply. they've ordered supply, these mask and gowns and gloves, but some are being told they won't

different way. abc7 news aung core liz kreutz tweeted this picture from creekside pizza in marin county. they had to cancel their annual party, but are selling corned beef and cabbage feasts to go. the owners of one pizza parlor in san jose are helping out their community right thought. abc7 news south bay community journalist dustin dorsey tells how they're giving back through random acts of people. >> people doing good. it's exactly what the owners of tony alba's pizza and pasta are doing. >> we're all in this together. >> this sparked them to give back to those in need with the gift of pizza. they're donating and delivering take and bake pizza and salads free of charge to people over 70 who are quarantined. >> it's our people. it's our community. it's what we grew up with. they supported us for all these years here at this business. we've been here for 30 years.
