programs for people who are out of work or sick because of the coronavirus. uber and lyft drivers are taking action in court. they want a judge to give them paid sick leave. good morning, jobina. >> now the "san francisco chronicle" reporting drivers for uber and lyft want a judge to pay them sick leave and this is as employees and not contractors. this will protect not only their customers from the vircoronavir because many feel they can't stay home right now. >> work is super slow. i was waiting on sfo because i'm an uber and lyft driver. five hours. i can show you. five hours i just got someone in five hours and put them on bay street and i got $24 in five hours.

they had a pretty major earthquake in that area. rainfall over the weekend and into next week. the weekend trending drier and so is the rainfall for next week. so, it's kind of influx. we know it is going to rain, not quite how much. as we get closer we'll dial down on that. three weeks of sheltering at home will be a challenge for a lot of us. especially hard on some seniors who have limited options to socialize. so, a lot of people are now calling what is known as the friendship line. patrick arbury started it 47 years at the institute of aging. staff and volunteers are seeing a substantial increase in calls from seniors who need to express their anxiety about needing someone to comfort them. >> talking to me today about being a child and the whole duck and cover era, you know, from when we were, you know, 7 or 8 years old and how scary that was. and she said i'm feeling that same way. she said i'm feeling like a

investors continue to be concerned about the economic impact of the coronavirus. it's been a wild ride this week. monday was the worst day for the market since 1987 and yesterday stocks rebounded with the dow closing up more than 1,000 points. the dow has actually had at least a 1,000-point swing every day for the past seven trading days. we will continue to keep monitoring the situation throughout the morning and i also want to make a note here that new york stock exchange tweeted out that it remains open for business that precautions have been taken and they increased social distancing there and also have contingency plans in place, if needed, to trade on a fully electronic basis, which i thought was interesting, kumasi. >> thank you. this morning a lot of parents and students here in the bay area are waking up to the reality that school might not be in session in april as planned. governor newsom announced they might not reopen schools until the full and that has a lot of parents concerned.

julian glover is live in fremont with more on this. julian? >> good morning, kumasi. we should mention and stress this is what the governor is calling the worse-case scenario. students not able to go back to class until the fall. but this leads, of course, to so many questions for parents to wrap their heads around. how do you make sure your child is learning if they're out of school for the foreseeable future. if you have to go to work, leave home, how do you arrange child care for the next several weeks and months to come. of course, for those students who want to go back to school to see their friends. how do you explain all of this to them. of course, we have so many questions after the governor's bombshell announcement that he made yesterday. again, that school may not be open and students may not be back in class until the fall. it's making so many of us realize how serious this pandemic is. now, yesterday the governor said he had to explain the situation to his own daughter who is having stress and anxiety and missing her own friends. >> very sober moment over a

course of about an hour and i told her, honey, i don't think the schools are going to open, again. if i can tell my daughter that and not tell your daughter that or the people, then i'm not being honest and true to people of the state of california. >> the governor said it may be shocking, but he wanted to be honest with californians about where we are in the crisis. of course, keeping students fed another top concern. we've talked about it before. so many students depending on that guaranteed meal that breakfast or lunch provided by the school. that's why public school systems across the bay area are continuing their meal to go services where anyone 18 or younger can get that free meal. now, coming up later today, we're also expecting to hear from the state superintendent of schools tony therman to further address and lay out exactly what we can expect and how this will shake out in the days to come for the millions of californian children who are out of school for the foreseeable future. for now reporting live in fremont this morning, i'm julian

glover, abc 7 news. >> julian, thank you. this morning, nearly 8 million people in seven bay area counties are now under a shelter in place order. sonoma county joined six other bay area counties yesterday. sonoma county is telling residents they should stay home for three weeks. governor newsom signed an emergency declaration providing up to $1 billion in funding to fight coronavirus. he's putting the national guard on alert to help with things like food distribution. >> we have asked the national guard to work with us on logistics and aid and begin to regionalize strategy solutions and address what we do often in emergencies. >> newsom also says the state is negotiating with about 900 hotels to acquire tens of thousands of rooms that could be used for hospital patients and for the homeless. a hiring rush is on to get more nurses working in san francisco in the event of a coronavirus overwhelm. an emergency order to speed up the process.

normally takes six months and now nurses can be hired. some of them in a week. a hiring fair is set for this weekend at zuckerberg san francisco general hospital. >> today i waive the prohivisior around hiring rules so we can hire qualified, registered nurses on the spot. >> the governor also signed an emergency order unlocking funding to increase hospital capacity statewide. he's confident that in the next week or two the state will be able to significantly increase the number of covid-19 tests that it administers. a new drive-through testing site is now open. sky 7 shows thus site at the santa clara fe science runs it. they are a subsidiary of alphabet which is google's parent company. you do have to apply online to get tested. do not just show up to this site. there is a second drive through in san mateo county. some emergency hand washing stations in san francisco are also being vandalized. crews put more than 20 of these out around the city last week.

we found one with graffiti all over it. the stations are supposed to help slow the spread of the coronavirus and people who are homeless. president trump is now urging congress to deploy a trillion dollars right away. he wants checks sent to american families who are struggling because of the virus. this comes amid a new warning that the nation's unemployment rate could climb to the double digits. alex has the details. >> reporter: urging congress to inject up to $1 trillion into the economy to fight novel coronavirus. >> we're going big. >> reporter: one big piece of the plan direct case payments to most americans. it's unclear how much senator mitt romney proposed 1,000 per person. >> i mean now in the next two weeks. >> reporter: the plan would also include $500 billion in a payroll tax cut, $50 billion for the airline industry and $250 billion for small business loans. treasury secretary steven mnuchin telling senate

the latest to get fresh produce ready for us to buy. amy? >> hi, kumasi. this is a distributor that sells to grocery stores and you may not think of people binge buying produce, but it is happening. it's not just toilet paper and pasta. they say people are binge buying produce, too. and the word is they need everyone to slow down. they really got slammed earlier this week. they say when people went to the stores on monday, that rush on the stores on monday, the stores then came here on tuesday, yesterday, to replenish. they say yesterday was crazy. they saw big sales of produce. the produce that has longer shelf life like potatoes, unen is ai onions and bananas. they are getting low on bananas. they can only grow the food so fast. they need everyone to take a breath. >> we are trying to get people, to encourage people to keep buying to a regular pace and then that way the supply chain
