pandemic began, china reported no new cases today. but as we know, the crisis here in the u.s. and in other parts of the world, it is far from over. john hopkins university has reported about 9,500 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the u.s. 150 people have died, including a sixth person in santa clara county. it is day three of sheltering in place for much of the bay area. solano county began its shelter in place order yesterday. napa county will start its shelter in place tomorrow. with all the kids out of school, more schools are offering meal pickup today. more than a dozen places where kids in san francisco can get breakfast or lunch while school is closed. abc 7 news reporter julian glover live for us in san francisco. julian. >> good morning, reggie. help is on the way for those families here in san francisco who may be worried about putting food on the table with the shelter in place order in effect. we know now that rosa parks elementary school is one of the latest schools to come online to

hand out free meals to anyone 18 or younger. here's how it is going to work. 19 schools within the san francisco unified school district that providing free breakfast, lunch and snacks that could last on the shelf for a while to those hungry kids. no i.d.'d but the child must be present. open monday through friday from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. >> students need to eat even though the schools are closed. >> certainly concerned families are dealing with. we've seen family all across the bay area take advantage of the meal to go resources and we talked about how many kids depend on that guaranteed meal from school every day and with schools being out and with some fam parents out of work, it's tough for them to keep the food on the table. there are locations up to north beach where you can take advantage of this program. again, happening from 9:00 a.m.

but if people are in the same household, they don't necessarily to keep the members from members of their household. it would be impossible for them to do that. it's not a fair assessment to say people were out and about and not necessarily following the distancing protocols we put into place. you see the buses are empty and the roads are empty and people doing everything they can to comply. >> jake tapper definitely called people out. mayor breed will provide general updates on the city's response at a press conference scheduled for 11:00 today. we'll carry that live on the air and stream it to you. >> i can understand the confusion. as you're getting all the phone calls from people across the country who think we are literally in the house every minute of the day. >> they think that no one is leaving at any point. they don't know how we're doing our jobs, but, again, those essential things. as mayor breed continued in this

ventilators and other hospital equipment at factories closed. >> things we need on the front lines is personal, protective gear for my colleagues and myself. >> reporter: hospitals across the country are facing a critical shortage of protective gear. this hospital in auburn, washington, could run out of supplies by tomorrow. at putny health system in georgia, they ran through six months of protective gear in seven days. >> where we thought we were ready, we had no idea what this has been like. >> reporter: volunteers are now helping the hospital by sewing covers using surgical sheets to help the masks last longer. >> we have an army of seamstress making these and we have more than 50 people making these right now. we think we can make 200 of them. >> the federal government is ramping up production of a self-swab testing kits. the kits can be sent home where the patient would do a simple

nose swab themselves. in the meantime as work on a vaccine continues around the clock, scientists in san francisco are checking to see if any drugs are already approved by the fda will help fight covid-19 now. >> basically 24 hours a day of, you know, data flying back and forth. >> reporter: kenneth motten, abc news, new york. another sign that our health care system is overwhelmed. this soccer field is being converted into a field hospital. you can see the workers started setting up the tents yesterday. the hospital will eventually have 200 beds. the county says it needs 3,000 more medical beds to fight coronavirus. governor newsom wants to suspend standardized testing for grades k through 12. put standardized testing on hold in response to covid-19. newsom says this time is stressful enough for families, students and educators without the additional burden of annual

it is 5:14 if you're just joining us, seven things to know. 422 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the bay area. santa clara, once again, has the most with 175. san mateo reports 80 cases. 14 more than tuesday and eight new cases were reported in san francisco. that total now in the city is 51. >> number two, a shelter in place order now in effect in solano county because of the outbreak. it comes after one of the county's top health officials say it wasn't needed because it would create panic. the county has joined the rest of the bay area. london breed will update us on the city's response to coronavirus. one day after she went on cnn to defend san francisco earlier this week there was criticism on the network that people were ignoring the shelter in place and social distancing guidelines that are now here.

number four. three residents of a san mateo county assisted living facility have tested positive and have been transferred to hospitals. they're investigating how coronavirus affected the residents at atria burlingame. the district is providing free breakfast, lunch and pantry items to all children under 15 that happens every week day. number six weather wise you can see on live doppler 7 a few showers around the santa cruz mountains and monterey bay and that will be the case this afternoon while the rest of us have a drying trend before the next storm arrives this weekend. >> number seven. we're going to check in on a live camera here and look at the conditions out on our roads this morning. here you're seeing the san mateo bridge where everything is clear. many americans are stuck abroad during the pandemic and they won't be coming home soon.

ammonia or rubbing alcohol and also do not mix hydrogen peroxide and vinger. the stress of coronavirus is impacting us like we have never felt before. many people in the bay area are doing small acts of kindness to let their neighbors know that they are not alone. abc 7 news reporter lauren martinez is in san francisco with how people are coping during this difficult time. >> we want to be able to do something. >> reporter: diane is handing out fliers in san francisco district. part of a neighborhood help group that is offering to get groceries or pick up medications for the elderly or unable. >> for all of us to help each other so that we can get through this. >> reporter: owner of v eer offs of toilet paper or eggs he

picked up at a warehouse. >> as a restaurant we have access to these supplies. just shows we're still, we're still connected. >> reporter: at labo's market, volunteers are delivering groceries to those who are concerned about shopping in public. >> we don't know how long this is going to last and i'm not a doctor and i don't have a cure, but i can help deliver groceries. >> it's just a crazy time and we all need to do what we can to help each other out. >> reporter: ben says neighbors can now connect with neighbors. >> it's part of the neighborhood empowerment network. and they put out a call to turn on unity lights. >> reporter: people can turn on a lamp and put it in the front window to know you're not alone in a time of social distancing. >> let everyone on our block knee we' know we're in it together. >> reporter: some are hanging up holiday lights to show a sign of hope.

>> i love seeing city hall lit up in as long as you maintain that social distance, here's a look at the oakland coliseum north on 880. we see that it's fairly quiet weatherwise this morning other than a few showers that we just showed you around the monterey bay and the santa cruz mountains and fog in the east bay valleys. extra sunshine milder this afternoon and fog will form and we'll need the umbrellas, again, starting sunday. for today you'll see the best dots in the higher elevations of the south bay and few random showers up in northern sonoma and 58 to 62 degrees. still just a little bit shy of where we should be for this time of year. tonight mid-30s to mid-40s and you can see some of that fog developing right there.

all right. let's take a look at future radar and keep an eye down south and you can see there and also up in the north bay. just some random showers developing at noon and they realy don't move much. they just kind of meander and rain themselves out and we lose the heating of the day and we lose the energy. and overnight pretty quiet. tomorrow, even what a few, one or two maybe in the same area. so, a lot of us are going to miss out on that. let's take a look at the rain totals. you can see just a couple 0.01 if those showers do come out of the higher elevation and hit some of our reporting stations. it's going to feel like spring for at least saturday and sunday. sunday night, the rain rolls in and chances continue. a one on the storm impact scale. all the way through wednesday when we're back in the mid to upper 50s. even though spring starts today. we can't shake winter temperatures. >> oh, okay. thanks, mike. in the north bay. marin county officials are calling on stores to make senior only shopping hours.

out and delivery only. child care centers can remain open, but need to practice social distancing. but other businesses like bars and movie theaters are closed and no visitor are allowed at hospitals or nursing homes. >> i was surprised that it took them that long to issue the order. i don't know how i feel about that. like staying home all day long. i'm sure we can still like go out and to the parks and stuff. >> affecting all these other counties and starting to spread and eventually going to have to come here and i think it is to keep everybody safe. >> solano county is home to travis air force base which has been a quarantine location. americans evacuated from wuhan, china, and those on the grand princess cruise ship have been here. one of the first cases of community spread that one happened in late february. this county has eight known cases of coronavirus. the shelter at home order is in effect until 11:59 p.m. on april

live streaming funerals to limit crowds during the pandemic. california's dmv canceled all behind the wheel tests for the next 30 days. offices remain open, though. jpmorgan chase is temporarily closing some branches in the bay area and across the nation. kumasi. >> the news i-team has confirmed that three residents of the san mateo county assisted living facility have tested positive for coronavirus and they have been transferred to the hospital. san mateo county health says it's investigating how the coronavirus infected the residents. the assisted living facility is closed to visitors and family. the i-team spoke with a woman whose parents are residents there. >> the families are freaking out. and also because they can't see their loved ones. they can't see them physically, at all. we don't know when we will. >> that is tough. another family of an atria resident provided these e-mails that the faculty sent out and they said the residents that have coronavirus went to the

hospital this past thursday, friday and sunday. the remaining residents are restricted to their apartments and their meals are being delivered to them. last night atria's headquarters in washington, d.c., sent a statement revealing that three more residents from the burlinggame facility are in the hospital awaiting their covid-19 test results. the health and well being of atria residents and employees is our first priority. you can read their entire statement. congress to pass a $1 trillion economic package. it would help companies and americans affected by the coronavirus pandemic and all of this comes as two members of congress have now tested positive for the virus. here's abc news reporter alex. >> reporter: of the thousands of patients with covid-19 two are members of congress. mario diaz-balart and ben mcadams. other members who made contact

with the two are low risk. this comes as the senate passed a relief bill wednesday. finding ways to quickly put money in the hands of americans. >> i view in a sense a war-time president. >> reporter: pushing congress to pass a $1 trillion economic recovery package include $500 billion in direct payments to americans. two rounds of checks sent out on april 6th and may 18th. $300 billion for small businesses. and a $50 billion bailout for the hard-hit airline industry. but any deal would have to be worked out with democrats. and now the president is prepared to invoke a korean-war era law allowing the president to direct american industries to produce critically needed protective equipment and gear. >> we are all in this together and we'll come through together. it's the invisible enemy. >> reporter: doctors are warning they expect to see a surge in cases over the next four to five days as more test comes back. but say critical protective gear is running low and putting them in danger.

to 6.3%. i don't think it will become a huge surprise to you to hear that the markets are all down this morning in premarket trading, futures are actually considerably down, especially for the dow. we'll watch it when it opens next hour. well, as many workers around the bay area hunker down to work from home, cyber security experts are warning us to step up their attacks. amanda del castillo has the details. >> reporter: the coronavirus is changing the way we work. bringing with it a new set of cyber security challenges. who is most at risk? >> everybody. the level and degree of how hard the bad actors or the hacker is going to try. >> reporter: but the professor assures there are ways to keep your information safe and your connection secure while sheltering in place. those forced to work from home shared their set up. tolana williams works in tech. >> for me mostly connecting my

computer to my home desk so i can have another monitor. >> reporter: other companies rely on a virtual private network or vpn, a secure pipeline between employees and work. you want to steer clear of public unsecured wi-fi. configuring your firewall and sticking to company equipment and only visiting trusted sites are key. since the end of february researchers have found domain names related to covid-19 have greatly increased. so far 0.8%. 93 were found to be malicious. 2,200 others found to be suspicio suspicious. >> for example, the famous website for john hopkins university that everybody is using to track the cases, so many copies of that. of that website. and they are malicious. >> reporter: pandemic or not, he says tech has always been under attack. >> we have to be careful about many, many things when we're completely virtual. >> reporter: also targeting cell phone apps. realtime tracking of covid-19.

39 degrees right now in castro valley. everyone else along the east bay in the mid to even upper 40s around oakland. 48 and alameda 49. you can see temperatures pretty much in the mid to upper 40s except for up in the north bay in the low to mid-40s. here's a look at walnut creek. some people out commuting this morning. let's talk about what to expect weatherwise. some foggy areas, especially if you keep heading south on 680, you'll run into the fog in the valley. milder this afternoon and random showers, especially around the south bay. but you can see for the most part, looks pretty dry. a lot of the showers will develop in the mountains on either side of the south bay and kind of drift over the bay itself as we reach near 60 degrees this afternoon. east bay valleys, the fog will fade to a partly cloudy afternoon. we'll jump from 46 at 9:00 to nearly 60 this afternoon. and the peninsula we're starting off in the mid-40s and we'll stay in the 40s through 9:00 and you can see mid to upper 50s from 11:00 all the way through 7:00.

of patty's home, a dozen older dogs all frolic and visit. normally they and more than 70 uth dogs would be housed at her muttville shelter in san francisco, but not during the coronavirus outbreak. >> all 80 plus dogs are all in foster homes right now because we don't want to have to bring people into work. >> reporter: although shelters are considered essential services, franklin says why take the chance of exposing workers, volunteers or clients to the virus. however, for people who are feeling a bit lonely sheltering in their homes, adoption is still an option. >> we're setting them up appointment. one-on-one appointsment. >> reporter: muttville is dedicated to getting these dogs into adoptive homes right now, that during this current emergency period, they're waiving their fees. across the bay in alameda, a family is getting their shepard archie aquated with ace, a dog they plan to foster. >> whatever works. we all have to do our part and
