live doppler 7. we have a little bit of fog out there especially around novato and visibility down to half a mile at times. 37, 101, if you have to travel those. any of the side streets and those could be very inundated with fog and dangerously low visibility. here's a look at my day planner. i put together the next 12 hour. little cooler when you step outside due to the lack of clouds. upper 50s at noon with more sunshine than yesterday and then that slight chance of a shower in the south bay while the rest of us will be mostly sunny, mid to upper 50s at the coast and low to mid-60s here around the bay and our inland neighborhoods. reggie? >> thanks, mike. this morning, 40 million californians are waking up under a brand-new stay at home order issued by governor newsom follows a similar move initially made by six bay area counties earlier this week. jobina is at the live desk with reaction from los angeles mayor eric garcetti.

>> governor newsom calls the statewide shelter in place order a pivotal move and the governor spoke last night and said if nothing is done, the virus will impact 56% of californians in the next eight weeks. that is a worse-case scenario there. meanwhile los angeles mayor eric garcetti appeared to say he is on board. it is critical for all people to stay inside their homes and immediately limit all nonessential movement. >> i think we all fantasize that our city, our state, our country has a protective mote. if we can just keep those people out and if we can have a bubble around us. it's not coming. but the history is clear and this disease is clear, we have to take steps early. none of us have the adequate infrastructure for this and our best shot is to push this out. these are acts of love for people and the precious lives we want to protect.

>> here's a peek at what the roads have been looking like in l.a. this week. this is video from earlier this week of interstate 405 at 6:00. if you have ever ridden around l.a., you know that is a rare sight. people are taking this seriously. kuma kumasi. >> that's good to see. 483 cases total in all bay area counties plus santa cruz county. seven people have died. napa county's order to shelter at home officially started at midnight and as jobina just ordered governor newsom is requiring everyone in california to stay at home. at 10:00 this morning san jose public officials will update the importance of staying they'll also discuss on how people -- tourism in san francisco is taking a big hit because of the coronavirus pandemic. >> "the chronicle" reports some hotels have temporarily closed and many more are expected to follow suit in the next couple weeks. the head of the san francisco

association estimates that up to half of the city's hotels will suspend operations. the hotel industry is also suffering in other parts of the world. in a video posted on twitter, the ceo of marriott explains just how bad business is. >> covid-19 is having a more severe and sudden financial impact on our business than 9/11 and the 2009 financial crisis combined. >> hundreds of marriott hotels have closed or will do so. the ceo says some hotels may not reopen. only on abc 7 news a remarkable effort in the east bay to make sure they're getting the coronavirus test they need. a local pilot is carrying precious cargo that needs to get to labs in southern california. julian glover is live at the hayward executive airport with more on this. julian? >> good morning, kumasi. a whole lot of talk of the availability of the coronavirus testing kits and now we're learning how those kits get to the labs where they can be analyzed and we're hearing that

this is a very urgent process. check out the cessna plane that these kids are flown on. you'll notice that this plane that leaves from hayward executive airport each night is at full capacity. look at that green bag right there. there are 50 on planes with samples from northern california. the swabs are flown to labs in l.a. where they're then analyzed. we caught up with the pilot, kevin perry, who says there is absolutely no time to spare. >> all these test kits are all under a time constraint. you know, if they sit here too long, they could go bad and then they would have to be retested. from engine start, i'm out of here in five minutes. >> and having to be retested, you could just understand how more of a problem that could potentially create. we're hearing from the pilot, it only takes him 90 minutes to get from here to hayward executive to that lab where they're going to be analyzed.

that's faster than, i should say he can do two round trips in the time someone would take to drive there. so, very important work as more tests are ordered and more people are tested for coronavirus. reporting live at hayward executive airport, i'm julian glover. people on the front lines of the battle against coronavirus are concerned about their safety. >> what do you want? >> help us protect ourselves and protect our patients. >> nurses at kaiser permanente staged this protest yesterday. they tell the san francisco examiner they are worried about cross contamination at the hospital. as abc news anchor kenneth moton explains, they're not the only people risking their health. >> reporter: this morning a growing concern for emergency responders across the country. >> expoesure for us is just simply a cough or a sneeze. >> reporter: paramedics and police facing new dangers with every 911 call they get. >> working 16-hour days and

we've gone through now, it will be six months of personal protective equipment in just seven days. >> reporter: personal protective equipment or ppe is running low. as more patients become critically ill from the coronavirus. some life-long medics already saying they've used more masks in one day than throughout their entire career. >> this is what our firefighters, emts normally wear on the street when they respond to an emergency call and this provides them with ample protection from sneeze or a cough. they have a mask and eye protection and gown and gloves. >> the rate of exposure is not sustainable with entire states now facing medical emergencies. and multiple crew members potentially exposed on every call. >> if one of our firefighters gets sick or gets exposed or if we bring someone in that exposes our crews, then that limits the number of firefighters that are available to respond. >> reporter: so some departments including dozens across california and oregon are now telling crews to keep working as

long as they don't display symptoms, even if they have a confirmed exposure. >> every hospital in the world is worried about their doctors and nurses and other health care workers getting infect woued wi the coronavirus. >> reporter: kenneth moton. for so many people sheltering at home, the ability to get out and exercise is really important. east bay mud is keeping most of its 90 miles of trails open to the public. maybe a place just to connect with mats with nature. officials closed the reservoir after this week's shelter in place order. >> we saw a huge uptick in the number of people at those locations and we could not meet our safe, social distancing guidelines. >> earlier this week, east bay regional parks closed all of its parks but now the district is reopening at least a few of them like oakland robert sibley. visitors can access trails and open space and no buildings and

let's take a look and show you what is going on as far as your activity planner. if you have to be out getting essentials, quieter weather if you're restless and wants to step outside, it will be milder. tree pollen if you're going to be outside for a while. a lot of tree pollen out there. for the south bay in the 40s and mid-60s this afternoon, that's going to be warm enough with a slight chance of a stray shower. so, we have upper 40s. mid to upper 40s through about 10:00 in the east bay valleys. jump to 68 at 1:00 and mid-60s this afternoon and here's a look at the peninsula where we're stuck in the 40s through 9:00. a lot of sunshine early with increasing clouds and the farther south you are, the more

likely you could get a stray shower this afternoon with temperatures in the low 60s. jobina is upstairs and bring her in right now and she has an update on what is going on with b.a.r.t. wow. >> we have been watching it because we ride it every day and seeing basically no one is on the trains and ridership on b.a.r.t. is down 90%. and the train's agency announced that changes are coming week days. the trains will run 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and weekends the trains will start at 8:00 a.m. and go until 9:00 p.m. we talked with riders about the early closure times. >> you have to realize that everybody is going to suffer. i'm lucky i have a job. >> as long as they don't mess with the commute hours, i'm fine with it. >> it's just something we have to bear with because we are going to try to nip this thing in the bud before we become like italy or washington state. >> again, schedule starts a week from saturday.

abc 7 news. a new report claims the white house was warned back in october about a pandemic like the coronavirus. "new york times" is reporting the department of health and

human services knew months before the coronavirus outbreak about by several agencies was dubbed crimson contagion. the scarcity of medical supplies saying the u.s. lacks domestic stock for antiviral medications, needles, syringes, masks and ventilators. >> after the 2009 h1n1 pandemic, we did clear calculations and realized we would need to buy billions of masks. >> doctor tom freeden who was the head of the cdc until 2017 said they were aware of the problems. the agency warned the government several times since 2010. gas prices are dropping because of the impact on the

economy. oil prices fell to their lowest level since 2002. take a look at this price in kentucky. 99 cents per gallon. gas buddy said on facebook it confirmed this price. here in the bay area, you are not going to find anything like that. they're a little lower. the lowest price here is at go gas and food in oakland and they're charging $2.59 per gallon. girl scouts are changing their strategy to sell their cookies online. the last day to buy cookies is this sunday and because the scouts can no longer set up booths outside of stores to sell them, their sales have slowed down. >> i sent out things over my different social medias offering deliveries for people who ordered cookies. so, i've been dragging my mom down the peninsula, through san francisco, around marin delivering cookies to anyone who wants them. >> this year, the girl scouts of northern california council will allow scouts to return unsold cookies.

let's take a look at the drought monitor. didn't really change for us last week. still either dry to moderate dry the entire bay area. all of our neighborhoods under that moniker. now, the state didn't really change much either as far as the moderate drought. still 48%. if you look up near crescent city, a severe drought is now starting to cross the border from oregon and work its way south towards reading. let's hope that rain makes its way up to the northern part of our state. >> mike, thank you. local restaurants are getting creative to try to stay afloat during this really uncertain time. one is coswell's a san francisco beast row known for its cheeseburgers. the restaurant is offering fresh vegetable and dried goods packages that will soon contain of all things, toilet paper.

now at 6:30, it is a historic day on wall street. the opening bell just rang as the new york stock exchange prepares to close its trading floor. starting on monday, trading goes 100% electronic to protect employees from the coronavirus. the markets seem to be stabilizing this morning, but as we know it was an incredibly difficult week. also this morning, the rush to stop the spread of coronavirus. governor newsom announcing the state will release hospital beds in the bay area to people diagnosed with covid-19. as he orders all californians to stay home. >> this is a moment in time and we will meet this moment together and we will look back

101 is where it is thickest.s p t alon mancoast, that is where seeing fog at reporting stations. san rafael and you see as we look south on 101, no fog. mid-30s to mid-40s. little less cloud cover to keep us warm. more sunshine, though, means milder at lunch and sunglasses, you'll need them. upper 50s. mid to upper 50s at the coast while the rest of us hit the mid to low 60s and best chance of a shower develops in the south bay. >> all right, thanks, mike. this morning the shelter in place order already in effect in the bay area and los angeles county is now extended over the entire state and its 40 million residents. last night governor gavin newsom issued the order. jobina is at the live desk with more. >> calls the statewide shelter in place a pivotal moment to slow the spread of coronavirus. people are reacting all over the country to this. the governor says if nothing is done, the virus will impact about 56% of californians in the

next eight weeks. that's more than 25 million people sickened at a pace that would overwhem the state's medical system. the governor is mobilizing hundreds of california national guard troops for aid efforts and also planning to transform dorms to house patients. but he says the biggest help comes from each other. >> i think all of us are coming to appreciate our teachers. we're all coming to appreciate each other, i think, a little bit more. we don't see this through the lens of rural, urban and we certainly don't see it through the lens of republican and democrat. i think we're all human beings deeply capable of loving one another. >> newsom is asking the federal government to get field hospitals ready and bring a navy hospital ship to port in los angeles. reggie, i'll send it back to you in the studio. the governor also announced the state is going to lease hospital beds for coronavirus patients and one of those facilities is seton medical center in daly city.

that's where amy hollyfield is live this morning. amy? >> hi, reggie. the state plans to rent half the beds in this hospital. essentially saving this hospital. it was planning on closing. the governor announced he will be using special covid-19 response funds from the state budget to rent the space here at seton medical center in d a, ly city. the community was very worried about this hospital closing wondering where people would go for medical treatment, especially when this pandemic hit. so, there is some relief here that the hospital will be used by the state and officials say they plan to do it with caution. >> there's going to be certain floors, my understanding, that are going to be designating for those patients. so making sure that the area is contained and safe is critical. >> the state will take over 177

beds here. that is about half the beds here at this hospital. and will pay $5 million in the first month and then each month after that will pay about $2.7 million. they didn't say when this is going to happen. they still have to move in equipment and train the staff, but this hospital now set to play a key role in the fight against this virus when just days ago it was on the verge of closing. what a turn of events. reporting live in daly city, amy hollyfield. now here's a look at the cases in the bay area county by county. now 483 cases. marin county reported ten new confirmed cases just last night and that is the largest single day increase since the first case was reported there on march 4th. santa clara county continues to report new cases. 14 in the last day bringing their total to 189. six people have died in that county. san francisco announced 19 new cases bringing the total to 70. the number of confirmed

coronavirus cases has risen to five at the atria burlingame facility. all five patients are in the hospital this morning and the facility is closed to the public. people who live there are staying in their rooms and county health officials and the cdc visited the home to launch an internal investigation. in san francisco, officials are working to find safe places to house people who are experiencing homelessness amid this pandemic. the city's department of human service is working to rent 3,500 hotel rooms in the next is several weeks. they moved four people who experienced homelessness who tested positive for coronavirus into hotels where they can be isolated from others. >> this will be a very common occurrence. we don't want people who do not need to be hospitalized to be there simply because they can't isolate.eaders could also lease more hotel rooms to house first responders and medical workers to reduce their risk of spreading coronavirus.

in the south bay first responders have pledged to keep answering calls for help despite risking exposure to coronavirus. >> san jose police say right now a reserve officer is recovering after testing positive for covid-19. he was at a recent gathering with a group of other reserve officers. all are self-isolating for several more days. san jose police chief says new policies to protect officers and their families from the virus. >> we're hoping that the steps we have taken will help mitigate any further exposure. >> now recovering at home after being treated for coronavirus in the icu. ten others also tested positive. those firefighters report having mild to moderate symptoms. researchers in labs at ucsf lab have been working around the clock to determine which cells it invades and hijacks.s.s.

from meteorologist mike nicco. >> like seeing that. i bet a lot of people do. excuse me. 39 in men low park right now and the cool spot on the peninsula everybody else in the mid to low 40s. midto low 40s on the east bay side and you head towards oakland and san francisco, upper 30s. 38 in san ramon and east bay valleys and 35 in santa rosa the cool spot up in the north bay. bay bridge toll plaza and you can see all that early sunshine. just a slight chance of a shower this afternoon otherwise your commute, if you have to be out there, pretty quiet weather wise. let's talk more about the temperatures. 39 at 7:00 and jump to 40 at 9:00 and the fog around novato will dissipate rather quickly. 11:00 sunshine and 55 and low to mid-60s and brightest and one of the warmest areas for the afternoon. and then 56 at 11:00 and you can see some low 60s with increasing clouds. the closer you are say south of hayward towards newark and union

people are tested. i'm julian glover, abc 7 news. >> julian, thank you. now to a story only on 7 one in the north bay had to close because of coronavirus. a customer left a $2,000 tip. christy bricoli had served at buckeye roadhouse for 15 years. because of marin county shelter in place order they closed their bar and dining room monday. last friday, robert godard a regular customer left a $2,000 tip. >> i didn't believe it >> and he said, look, he showed me the tip. i was like, there's hope. >> i just decided to do it. it was my way of sort of plging community in a place that means a lot to us. >> the tip was split between 25 staff members and that included dishwashers, servers and bussers.
