bay area in isolation, how from home to stop the covid-19 spread. it's also a frightening time for those in our community who are having to live off the radar to stay safe. and it's not just food that people are taking to go in one bay area community. how friday night is shifting to stay socially separate. >> plus one neighborhood getting creative with the coronavirus shutdown, getting back to a good old block party. but at a distance. yeah, that story is pretty interesting. i'm jobina fortson in for liz kreutz. we'll have a look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. we have some showers along the central coast, sliding to the north and the south bay. they'll continue that northward track. we have a chance, like we did yesterday in the higher elevations. we saw some of those showers

from the east bay hills, mt. hamilton. and there will be those cumulus ild-ups for a ls morganhi few scattered showers and, as i said, they will continue to move up to the north with a chance of showers in the south bay this morning, even the peninsula. maybe the east bay. overall, though, you are milder and cloudier in the south bay, 48. you are clear and chilly. we are looking at temperatures coming into the 50s. check it out. we've got mostly sunny conditions. you see the green there. i'm stopping that at 4:00. some showers will be in the area. we'll talk about more showers for your sunday. jobina? >> thank you, lisa. we begin with the latest coronavirus count. there were just four related deaths reported in the bay area. now at least 11 total. sonoma county reported its first coronavirus related death last night. so did contra costa county. hard-hit santa clara county

reported two new fatalities. bay-area wide surged well past sub acute rabitn tested positiv the coronavirus. 75-year-old man was admitted march 14th with a fever. two initial roommates and staff who provided care are being monitored right now. covenant care released a statement on its website that reads in part, quote, we will continue to operate by the highest standards of safety. all staff, medical personnel and vendors are screened prior to entry and all of our facilities continue to prohibit visitors. firefighters who tested positive for covid-19 increased to at least 13. 75 others are being monitored because they were exposed to those who were sickened. firefighters union tells abc 7 news one firefighter was admitted to the icu but has since been discharged.

three people staying at the san mateo events center rvs are parked for temporary housing for people exposed to the virus and not needing hospitalization. each rv is single occupancy and has a kitchen and bathroom. county staff are monitoring the medical needs for everyone staying in the rvs. san francisco, another group of residents facing anxiety during the coronavirus is the undocumented community. employers are feeling the pressure and the financial strains of all of this and are laying off workers right now. only those undocumented with work permits qualify for unemployment. abc 7 news reporter luz pena spoke to organizations providing some help here. >> reporter: in the age of social distancing, right in the heart of san francisco's mission district, a go-to spot for many in this community who want to feel closer to home. >> i'm actually very, like, concerned. >> jacqueline hernandez is

hearing firsthand stories of many of her customers. many of them used to work at restaurants and stores and now are out of work. some are undocumented and don't qualify for unemployment. >> another one had to stop working on her other job. also because of the coronavirus. she has been working with us but only a few hours. >> reporter: they're getting calls every day for many in the undocumented community asking for help. >> a lot of housing insecurity if they're going to have a home next month. >> several day laborers concerned about the virus who say they need the money to survive. this man showed us his wallet and says he hasn't worked in five days. >> this is my pay before. >> reporter: several san francisco nonprofits have partnered together to help. >> we're in the process of

putting together a fund for relief services or financial assistance for those unable to apply for ccording to supervisor, board of supervisors is discussing ways to help the undocumented community, and it could come in the form of grants for those unemployed. abc 7 news. bay area residents appear to be adhering to the shelter in place order. this weekend is a test to see if people are staying at home. phil matier joined us in the abc 7 newsroom for insights. >> we, as a society, have managed to follow the rules, i think, as well or even better than the officials expected. i talked to them off camera. when we ordered the shutdown, they said, at 100% stay at home, to the grocery store and needed things, if people only did 75 to 80% of that, it would be a success. the overall goal is to stem the spread. we can't stop the spread, but to

closed because of covid-19. usual end of the week rush home deserted. not far away we found gregory martinez, who shared his friday night plans. >> board games, relaxing. nothing too crazy right now. >> martinez's plans included helping out small businesses, like pourhouse bistro. california lifted restriction on to-go and delivery alcohol at restaurants friday, sending home new orleans-themed specials like hurricanes and 32-ounce monsoons. >> you have to purchase a meal in order to take out the liquor or beer or wine. so, we're hoping that will increase sales. as you know, everybody is hurting right now. >> reporter: bistro president says restaurants and retailers could use the help under this temporary measure. it requires drivengs have a lid and be transported in the truveng or another unoccupied area of the car. >> everyone needs to be responsible through this, take a deep breath and be responsible.

>> reporter: in my search for friday night stay-at-home activities, happy hours and socializing at a, quote, social distance have gone virtual. you saw a group of people ved out across the country, all impacted by covid-19. i'm a del news. coronavirus health concerns did not seem to scare these folks away from a weekly market in the castro area yesterday. we spoke with abc 7 special correspondent dr. patel, to get tips on protecting you and your family if you decide to hit a farmer's market this weekend. >> you're taking your food out, washing it washing your surfaces, washing your hands and should be just fine. farmer's market, think about social distancing. we have to avoid crowds right now. >> you can always be patient, waiting your turn to make sure you have enough space to check out the produce. union employees at safeways in california will receive an

extra $2 an hour for so-called appreciation pay for working during the coronavirus pandemic. safeway also plans to install someplarert checkoutsafeguemoyees. target also announced it's boosting employee pay. as we take a live look outside here, what have we got? a quiet, almost actually completely empty bay bridge toll plaza there. look at that. there are no more cash tolls being collected. if you don't use fast track, cameras will take a picture of your license plate and you'll get an invoice in the mail. don't be alarmed if you see the word "violation" on it. >> none of these are violations. the system is set up to print that out. when they get the bill, it's just for the toll, not for any fine. there will be no fine.

the country settles into this new reality of isolation, take a look at this video, time lapse down sunset boulevard right before governor newsom's shelter in place order took place last night. usually buzzing with cars and energy, the street is stripped of life. incredible to see. not just in california but coast to coast, drastic restrictions are in place to stop the spread of coronavirus. there are now at least more than 19,000 cases around the u.s. abc's mark stewart has the latest from new york. >> the governor of new york, joining california and other states issuing new mandates, beginning sunday, ordering all nonessential workers to stay home, telling restaurants to stay indoors as much as possible and only leave to get food, medicine or solitary exercise.

deluge of wipes that people have been flushing into their toilets and they made their way to this main treatment plant, basically ended up clogging that process and equipment, basically overwhelmed the system. >> reporter: wipes that do not break down in the sewage system don't break down. the problem is getting a lot worse. this is sewage bubbling up from a manhole cover. >> nonflushables blocking the sewer and caused a spill. >> it's critical people stop flushing products that are not made to go down the toilet. >> paper towels, napkins, disinfectant wipes that come in a plastic canister, all of those don't dissolve in the sawyer. >> reporter: treatment plants and street pipes aren't the only at risk. >> the pipe you block may be your own pipe n that case your toilet won't flush, your shower won't drain, your sink will back

as we go through the day today. clouds in the south bay. isolated shower stopping this by 8:00 tonight. once again higher elevations where the air gets a littl more unstable as it rises higher in the atmosphere. more showers from the peninsula to san francisco. it continues into your sunday night, monday morning. this is still mild air and then the cold air with another system. 24-hour rainfall totals anywhere from perhaps quarter an inch san francisco to san jose mainly late tomorrow. and as we're looking at otherwise temperatures today with some of that sun it will be nice out there. how about 66 in palo alto, you can see the green maybe the hills in fremont, shower, 63 in richmond. not going to last all day. take you through the wet weather into your monday and more likely into tuesday. check it out. we've got rain. this is cold rain and it's also going to bring in at totals for next seven days.
