we turn now to the economic barbara corcoran from "shark tank" joins us with the three "r"s. good morning, to you, barbara. first, let's talk about that first "r." the step that you are saying we all should be taking. >> yes, the "r" stands for review. most of us don't really know what our expenses are. we need to sit down and see what they are beyond the mortgage and what our rent is which we all have memorized of course, every month, but we need to sit down and comb through the bank statements, comb through your credit card charges and see what we're actually spending your money on, and most people are very surprised on how much they're spending on monthly subscriptions, memberships and take home, or takeout food. once you know that, if you want to stretch your dollars you just have to focus on what's absolutely essential. you need to do that homework to actually do that. >> well, so many people have bills on their mind right now. how does the next "r" help?
8:41 am
>> well, this is a lot more than about just paying bills. it's having a game plan together to get you through the tough times. if you really think about it, what's on most of our minds, our greatest worry is losing our house or ruining our credit. aul sit down and figure out a plan for avoiding that. it usually involves credit card payments. that's our biggest enemy. if you have too many credit card bills, you should be paying your highest interest credit card bills first. you should be calling the company to see who wants to play ball with you. a lot of them will adjust your fames just for the asking. rmax, capital one and apple will let you skip a payment without penalty at all. if you have a mortgage above 5%, and most people take that for granted and continue to pay that every month, you should be going out and shopping for a new mortgage to refinance it, to knock down that payment while you have a job, not if you lose your job two months from now. >> now to some thoughts about how this will impact the future,
8:42 am
speaking of what two months look like. what's our last "r"? >> the "r" is to address retirement. so many of us are near retirement age and are panicked. it's really not time for panic. it's time to wait. take hold of what you can control. ignore what you can't control because it's downright stupid to worry about stuff you can't change. but this doesn't apply to everyone, but there are a lot of older people who have some money put aside, and today is actually a very good time to invest in the stock market because you're buying the stock cheap, 30% off what it's worth, and for those people who worry that the market does not recover, it always recovers. we recovered from the crash from '29, '87, 2008, 9/11. and take it from someone who has been through a lot of adversity, we always pull through. so there's really no reason to really be panicked right now what you cannot control.
