bay area in isolation, learning on the fly how to live from home to stop the covid-19 spread. it's also a frightening time for those in our community who aring are to live off the radar to stay safe. it's not just food that people are taking to go in one bay area community. how friday night is shifting to staying socially separate. and one neighborhood getting creative with the coronavirus shutdown, getting back to a good old block party but at a distance, of course. we begin with the latest coronavirus count. there were just four related deaths reported in the bay area, now at least 11 total. sonoma county reported its first death last night.

so did contra costa county. hard-hit santa clara county reported two new fatalities. the number of cases bay area wide surged past the 500 mark in 24 hours. a special report set for 9:30. this is a live look at the james brady briefing room at the white house where president trump and vice president mike pence and members of the coronavirus task force will have a testing update for us. we will go first to that special report as soon as it comes on, which we are expecting again at 9:30 this morning. good morning, everyone. it is saturday, march 21st. i'm >> welcome to the first weekend of spring where we have some spring showers from the central coast moving towards san jose, the east foothills and the east bay. going in closer here to palo alto, redwood city, highway 84,

could see a light shower from union city all the way out towards livermore and the diablo range, shower activity, san ramon and alamo a few sprinkles. temperatures in the 50s in oakland, 47 in richmond, 41 novato. north bay, you'll stay dry. the next few hours we have green from gilroy to san jose, some morning showers. by the afternoon, 1:00, in the 60s, warming up, but the showers will be sneaking up through the higher elevations, the south bay. it will be milder, mid to upper 60s. by 6:00, we're looking at some sunshine out there with few isolated showers. we're going to bring in more showers for the second half of your weekend and even next week as well. >> thank you, lisa. three people staying in rvs at the event center have tested positive for coronavirus. rvs are parked at the event center for temporary housing for people exposed to the virus a and not needing hospitalization. each rv is single occupancy and

has a kitchen and bathroom. counta are grpf residents facing anxiety during the coronavirus crisis is the undocumented community. employers are feeling the financial pressures and laying off workers right now. only those undocumented with work permits qualify for unemployment. luz pena spoke to organizations that are united to help provide some help here. >> reporter: in the age of social distancing, right in the heart of san francisco's mission district, a spot for many in this community who want to feel closer to home. >> i'm actually very concerned. >> reporter: jacqueline is hearing first hand the stories of many of her customers. many of them used to work at restaurants and stores and are now out of work. some are undocumented and don't qualify for unemployment. >> another one had to stop working at her other job.

also because of the coronavirus. and she's been working with us but only for a few hours. >> reporter: they're getting calls every day from many in the undocumented community asking for help. >> a lot of housing insecurity, if they're going to have a home next month. >> reporter: we met several day laborers who are concerned about the virus, saying they need the money to survive. luiz showed us his wallet and says he hasn't worked in five days. >> my pay before. >> reporter: several san francisco nonprofits have partnered together to help. >> we are in the process of putting together a fund for relief services or financial assistance for those that are unable to apply for unemployment. >> reporter: what is san francisco doing? according to the supervisor, the board of supervisors are discussing ways to help the undocumented community, and this could potentially come in forms

for grants for those who are unemployed. luz pena, abc7 news. bay area residents appear to be adhering to the shelter in place order but this weekend, it's a major test to see if people are staying at home. we were joined in the abc7 newsroom yesterday for some insight. >> we as a society have managed to follow the rules i think as well or even better than officials expected. i talked to them off camera. they said we ordered the shutdown, just grocery store and needed things, they were saying if people only did 75% to 80% of that, it would be a success. the overall goal is to stem the spread. we can't stop the spread but stem it and keep it from boiling over. it will be a critical week and weekend because this is the weekend they'll say will people continue to comply or will the sun bring them out and make it an unsafe situation? >> read phil matier's columns in

the "san francisco chronicle" every wednesday and sunday. this morning, they're extending coverage. people can sign up for coverage through june 30th. coverage for eligible enrollees begins the first of the following month, meaning most californian who is lose benefits from their previous jobs will not lose coverage. that is really good news. screening and testing for covid-19 are both free in california. every day, new closures and cancellations due to the outbreak. yosemite national park is closed to all visitors until further notice. starbucks is converting to drive-through only service at its company-owned locations for at least the next two weeks. they'll still offer counter service at some stores near hospitals in order to serve health care workers. and the gilroy garlic festival is canceled for the year and will resume in 2021. we have all the fully updated lists around cancellations and closures on our website, abc7news.com.

a big question as the bay area shelters in place this weekend is if the stay-at-home order will be enforced. san jose police is at least one department saying they will if they see the rules continue to be broken. the heart of silicon valley had a completely different look for friday night. it's arguably one of the best ways to be equipped to handle a weekend all online. abc7 news reporter amanda del castillo shows us how people are getting creeative to stay social. >> the new friday night scene in silicon valley. similar to other cities across the state. downtown san jose, desolate, normally packed san pedro square isolated. no friday night movie releases here, no blockbuster on the big. ens at the capital drive-in, closed because of covid-19. the usual end of the week rush home deserted. but not far away, we found gregory martinez, who shared his friday night plans. >> board games, chilling,

across the country, all impacted by covid-19. in san jose, amanda del castillo, abc7 news. many farmers' markets plan to set up as usual for outdoor crowds this weekend. the coronavirus health concerns did not seem to scare these folks away from a weekly market in the castro neighborhood yesterday. we also spoke with abc7's special correspondent to get some tips onou decid to hit the farmers' market this weekend. >> you're taking your food out, washing it, washing you should be fine. farnle farmers' markets, we have to avoid crowds right now. >> you can be patient, waiting your turn to have enough space and then check out the produce. safeway in california will receive an extra $2 an hour for appreciation pay for working during the coronavirus pandemic. safeway plans to install

plexiglas barriers at its checkout stands to safe guard employees. target is boosting pay by $2 an hour. leads will receive bonuses of up to $2,500. a quiet bay bridge toll plaza this morning. as of this morning, there are no more cash tolls being collected. if you don't use fast track, cameras will take a picture of your license plate and you'll get an invoice in the mail. do not be alarmed if has the word "violation" on it. >> none of these are violations. the system is set to print that out, but when they get the bill it will be for the toll, there will be no fines. >> the price of bridge tolls remains the same as this takes effect. now over to lisa argen for a look at the weekend. what's coming up? >> we've got some interesting scenario here where we have some

more than 20% of the u.s. population, 1 out of every 5 americans, has been ordered to stay at home. new york, illinois, and nevada joining california and pennsylvania in shutting down all nonessential businesses. concerns are growing, though, about the health system's ability to handle the peak of the crisis with beds filling up and critical supplies dwindling down. abc news reporter diane ma say doe has more. >> reporter: in new york, the state reports more than 8,000 cases of the new coronavirus. >> we are now the epicenter of this crisis. >> reporter: in new york city alone, confirmed cases have topped 5,000. now the governor is ordering all worker who is don't provide essential services to stay home with similar orders in at least five other states. >> 100% of the workforce must stay home. this is the most drastic action we can take. >> reporter: illinois is also ordering residents that don't

provide essential services to stay home. >> i fully recognize that in some cases i am choosing between saving people's lives and saving people's livelihoods. >> reporter: with beaches in florida still heavily populated with tourists and spring breakers, the state of florida is implementing an emergency order taking effect this sunday, which will close hotels and resorts. miami beach mayor dan gelber says, right now, as painful as it may be, the reality is we cannot be a tourist destination. california is deploying the national guard to distribute food at food banks. the announcement comes one day after governor newsome issued a statewide stay at home order. >> we direct a statewide order for people to stay at home. >> reporter: to prevent further spread, the white house says the u.s. border with mexico and canada is now closed for any nonessential travel. and to address medical supply shortages, president trump says he's evoking the production act.

>> we're invoking it to help the states get things they need like the masks, like the ventilators. >> reporter: but how the president is using that power is still unclear. new york pediatric surgeon dr. cornelia griggs is making a plea on social media. she and her husband are both doctors with two small children, desperate for supplies as they fight the outbreak. >> what people are doing at the hospitals are reusing masks we would otherwise throw out after one use and writing our names on it so that we can remember whose is whose and to ration and conserve those masks that we do have left. and what we're doing in the meanwhile is using regular masks, not n-95s. >> reporter: as testing becomes more available, abc has learned that the director of the national institutes of health warns as many as 70,000 americans could be diagnosed by the end of next week. so many people showed up to this

helped donate 60,000 surgical masks, 34,000 gloves, the 2,000 surgical gowns and 50 thermometers. the supplies will be delivered directly to health care workers which are essential to maintain community health. with a long week under our belts, working from home or trying to find ways to keep ourselves entertained, neighbors in one oakland neighborhood decided to end things on a positive note. i like this story. lauren martinez shows us this isn't your average block party. ♪ >> reporter: open up your garage, sit in your driveway, bring a glass of wine. minimum six feet apart. these redwood hills neighbors are throwing a social distance friday night happy hour. >> i took a shower, got all cleaned up. this is a big event tonight, 5:00. we were all excited. some people said they put their makeup on. >> reporter: 5-month-old westin's father came equipped with a beer and a six-foot pole.

a moment. we'll start this half hour with a look at weather and meteorologist lisa argen. >> we have a level 1 system this morning. you can see the showers from the east bay to the south bay, a few on the peninsula. they're not going to last, but, boy, they are allowing for kind of a gray start out there for some of you. as we look to the east bay, livermore, you can see the higher elevations looking at some rain as well as pleasanton, dublin, a few showers, 880, mill peta, 680, cupertino, some scattered light rain p wall nut creek, a sprinkle or two and on the peninsula from stamford through saratoga, you are looking at wet weather. gray for mt. tam, 50 in the city, 48 in gilroy. as we look towards our east bay, you can see the clouds there. some showers in the morning, then we'll call it partly cloudy and mild the rest of the day. >> you now to a clo look at the

doctors, nurses, and others on the front lines trying to protect themselves. david bright has more for us. >> reporter: bedside manner is not easy when patient care also comes with a fear of infecting others. >> using all protection i was supposed to, i probably just wiped the surface with my hands and wiped my face between mask usage and i was probably documenting a patient and got it that way. >> reporter: thousands of new patients. the numbers multiplying by the day. medical providers nationwide now face a critical shortage of protective equipment. >> my mask snapped while i was trying to take it off in between patients and i had to staple it back. >> there's absolutely fear in the unknown, and as we see the inducing. >> reporter: houston's fire department said it only has enough protective gowns to last one more week. here in new york state, where there are now more than 7,000 confirmed cases, governor andrew

kcuomo invited manufacturers to start making new masks. >> if you are in this line of work, i'll fund it. >> reporter: three 3m, the company that makes the used n-95 mask says it has doubled global output since the crisis began. the president invoked the defense production act to prioritize production of items under government contracts and to allocate scarce items where they are needed most. >> we have millions of masks which are coming and which will be distributed to the states. >> reporter: but it's not clear if the administration has actually required companies to make these products as the defense production act allows. also in short supply, ventilators, vital for the most severe cases. trump says the administration does have an emergency stockpile of masks and ventilators to distribute in the meantime. the shortage a real problem

increasing the risk for the people on the front lines of this battle and the patients they are trying to help. david wright, abc news, new york. pg&e is donating nearly a million masks to california's hospitals and first responders. the donation includes 480,000 n-95 masks and another 470,000 surgical masks. pg&e also vowed to donate a million dollars to nonprofits helping families in need of food as well as small businesses struggling to survive during this crisis. we've all heard about the hoarding of toilet paper, seen the videos and warnings, but this morning a new coronavirus pandemic trend with bathrooms but it's not the toilet paper that's the issue here. dan ashley shows you this time it's the wipes. >> reporter: this was the scene this morning. the general manager says there

is noe were basically faced wit a deluge of wipes that people had been flushing into their toilets and they made their way to the main treatment plant, basically ended up clogging the process and equipment, basically overcoming the system. >> reporter: wipes that do not break down in the sewage system have been a problem for years but with even more people using wipes to protect themselves from the coronavirus, the problem is getting a lot worse. this is sewage bubbling up from a manhole cover in san raphael. >> we had some nonflushables blocking the sewer and it caused a spill opinion. >> reporter: experts say it is critical that people stop flushing products that are not made to go down the toilet. >> paper towels, napkins, disinfectant wipes that come in a plastic canister, all of those don't dissolve in the sewer. >> reporter: it's not just treatment plants and street pipes that are at risk. >> the pipe you block may be your own, and in that case, you

won't drain, your sink will back up and we're obviously facing a really tough time right now, but it could be made worse if you had a backup for your house as well. >> reporter: so just in case you need one more reminder, novato sanitary has a motto to stop this from happening at your house. >> please flush only the three ps -- pee, poop, and tp, toilet paper. >> three ps. the california water resources control board say even if wipes say they are flushable, don't put them in the toilet. pictures of a couple are going viral. they tied the knot hours before governor new sh issued a statewide stay at home order. they had plans to get married on april 4th but had to change their plans. their friend, a pastor, agreed to marry them in their backyard on thursday.

the east bay coming down pretty good. how about almost a quarter of an inch for the hills and the upper elevations of the livermore valley, the diablo range, and as we look out towards mt. tam, you can see the cloud cover there has been dry in the north bay. most of the rain will be this morning into the east bay and the south bay. it's a level 1 system, and by the next few hours it fades away, but anywhere from one-one hundredth to a quarter of an inch then throughout the afternoon, a possibility of the higher elevationins looking at some showers. you can see the sun glinting on the rowers. it will be a pretty good afternoon. check this out. as we look into the east bay, dublin, you can see all the green here and into the livermore valley, a little bit of wet weather taking you down through milpitas. it's a wet start to the day up through fremont, but higher elevations for sure looking at the more enhanced precip out there. you can see to the east there
