the los angeles area. now the state adds there are well over 12,000 tests still pending, 22 labs across the state are doing the testing. the number of deaths is rising with at least 23 deaths blamed on the coronavirus statewide. governor newsom provided an update a short time ago on the state's response. >> and what we're seeing not only on the ground but we're seeing through the data is this spread continues at a pace that we had anticipated in a number of our models. >> he added the state is working to secure more shelters to get the homeless off the streets. in the bay area, at least 11 people have died in sonoma and contra costa counties, the first deaths yesterday. the number of cases has surged well past 500. santa clara county reported 67 new cases. it has by far the most in the bay area. san mateo county is next highest at 110. napa county remains the only place not to have a resident

test positive for coronavirus. an effort to contain the spread of the coronavirus, 40 million californians have been told to shelter in place. that means don't go out unless you need to get some exercise or really need get something like going to the grocery store or a restaurant for food. to see how life has changed, we get a check with abc7's lauren martinez. she joins us live from what would be a normally bustling walnut creek. we don't hear or see anything behind you. >> reporter: no, it's pretty empty. the three businesses behind me, tacos walnut creek, 54 men, and residual sugar wine bar are all dealing with this shutdown in very different ways. at 54 mint, they serve food and cafe. the owner says they've been here for more than five years. his sons are now helping out. they're doing to go order only -- to go orders only, and they're offering a roll of toilet paper with your order. >> it's one of the most in need

item these days. we thought they're giving support, we give toilet paper. >> reporter: now we planned to visit different restaurants and wine bars in walnut creek and see how they're adjusting to the changes. tacos walnut creek just opened in august. and the owner tells me they should be able to make rent and rotate staff if people continue to order from their takeout menu. at residual sugar wine bar, they're offering bottles to go now, something they didn't do before. so if you know any other places here in walnut creek that are getting creative, please tweet me, and hopefully we can stop by there because they need the support. reporting live in walnut creek, lauren martinez, nbc 7 news. >> thank you very much. this is a weekend like no other in the bay area. and across california as always are sheltering at home to help slow the spread of the

coronavirus pandemic. we have more from outside san francisco. what are you seeing out there? >> reporter: eric, we are seeing lots of empty streets. day five of our shelter-in-place order, seems like most people are heeding the order, staying home despite the beautiful weather today. this is our view. check it out west afri wharf like i have never seen it. as far as social distancing, many are making it work with exceptions. folks were resembling anything that was like their normal routine like this fireaarm's ma or this costco with shoppers keeping a distance from one another. >> we have to make the best of it, right? >> reorter: tourists from the netherlands couldn't find anything open in san francisco's famous fishermen's wharf. most businesses and restaurants closed during the shelter-in-place order.

jefferson street was deserted. chrissy field was a different story. lots of people out getting air and exercising. most practicing social distancing, but not all. >> as you see, there's not that much shelter in place. it's beautiful. there's more people out than last year at the same time. >> interesting enough, it seems like people are spacing themselves cautiously and walking around people. >> reporter: the health department has posted these signs about social distancing as a reminder. the sfpd taking it a step further. >> your actions could save a life. >> reporter: this public service announcement spells it out. >> if you do go outside, maintain social distance, please try to stay at least six feet away from each other. >> reporter: in the north bay, the streets of petaluma were empty. some restaurants are open doing takeout only. >> primed to go about life with some sense of normalcy. >> reporter: we talked to golfers at a safe social distance. they said rooster run gofrl

course was allowed to stay open as an essential business with plenty of precautions. >> they sanitized all the carts before we went out. they sanitized the cart keys. >> keeping our distance from each other and out here enjoying the day. >> they can't visit their mom. >> reporter: here at marin general, sisters charlene, cheryl, and colette couldn't visit their mom in icu so they sent their love in chalk on the sidewalk hoping mom would see it from the window. the message -- we love you. yeah, we got a message from one of the daughters. their mom did see the sign today, and it really lifted her spirits. now check this out -- certainly nothing that we've ever seen in postcards. these are the famous vendors on closedpnclung all of the souvenir stores. police say they will be out this weekend, reminding folks about social distancing if they see any violators.

live in fishermen's wharf, abc7 news. >> what a strange sight. thanks. a south bay company has received emergency approval from the federal government for a faster test to detect covid-19 in patients. sunnyvale's report says the test will work with 23,000 of its automated gene expert systems around the world. it should only take about 45 minutes to detect if someone is infected with covid-19 compared to hours or days for current tests. you are looking at video provided by safeyd. social distancing is become practiced at bay bridge and other bay area bridges. they are cash free for the time being. here's a live look at light traffic at the bay bridge told plaza. cash tolls were suspended at midnight at all seven state-owned bridges. the goal, to minimize contact drivers. drivers without fast track will be billed by mail with cameras taking pictures of license plates. there's no change for people who do have fast track.

president trump talked about efforts to obtain medical supplies like masks while speaking to reporters today. and mr. trump said governors like gavin newsom are free to work on finding their own ways to get what their states need. >> if california, if gavin can order gowns faster or masks, good masks faster or other things faster, that's good. we do have a lot of -- the coordination with the ships that we're sending in, as you know, the medical ships that we're sending in and even cruiseliners, we're going to be sending in probably cruise liners into some areas, in particular california, and in particular new york. but if somebody can do something faster, if they can order that mask faster than us, i want them to be able to do it. >> president trump also shared that he believes other states may not have to issue shelter-in-place orders like the ones we're living with in california. now san francisco's mayor spoke with reverend al sharpton

on msnbc criticizing the federal government's response to the virus. >> i really don't know where the president is on this. i hear the conversations, i hear the misinformation, i hear the divisiveness around calling this a chinese virus. now is not the time for that. the time is to come together to distribute resources, to lead our country. >> the senate continues to work on a $1 trillion stimulus package. it's thought to include no strings-attached payments from the federal government in april and may. they are slated to vote on the bill on monday. apple is donating millions of n95 masks to aid the country's response to the pandemic. vice president mike pence called on more businesses to chip in at this morning's coronavirus task force meeting. >> it's a great time to go to your storeroom, and if you have n95 masks, if you've got 100 of them, if you've got 10,000 of them, is to load them up, drive them over to your local

hospital. that story is literally happening all over the country. and now with more americans stepping away from elective surgery including elective dental care, we're urging dentists around america to look at their supplies of n95 masks and make those available to our hospitals. >> apple ceo tim cook tweeted the two million masks will go to health care workers in the u.s. and europe. the tech company also committed $15 million to worldwide covid-19 response efforts. emergency room doctors and nurses, the first line of defense for people with severe covid-19 illness, worry that they will soon be working without the properly protective gear. san francisco native dr. jeremy faust works in the e.r. at brigham and women's hospital. he says gowns and face shields are in short supply. what really bothers medical professionals is the shortage of the n95 masks. >> we don't have what we need. it's just -- it violates the first rule of any emergency or

any medical is seen safety. we've got to be safe so you can be safe. >> dr. faust also co-authored an op-ed that suggests quarantining people who test positive for coronavirus but have mild or even no symptoms in hotels. he says it would keep them away from others and help the struggling hotel industry. a second hotel is ready to provide a place for coronavirus patients to stay in in san mateo county after leaving the hospital. that hotel is the holiday inn express on old bayshore highway in burlingame. temporary fencing surrounds the hotel to keep patients isolated from the general public. health officials say hotels like this one play a critical role in the crisis. freeing up beds in hospitals for patients who need higher levels of care. a surge in patients has john muir consolidating operations in the east bay. it's clongts urgent cares. staff will be shifted to the urgent care centers in berkeley, brentwood, walnut creek, and

pleasanton. it's also taking extra precautions with patients. anyone who comes in will get a mask. update on the "grand princess" passengers. seven have tested positive for coronavirus even though they haven't shown symptoms. the ship came in after 19 crew and two passengers tested positive for the disease. thousands of people were taken off and sent to quarantine. more than 800 have been isolated at travis air force base, and many of them declined to be tested. it should be made clear that testing is not mandatory. an east bay congressman is in critical condition at a hospital, but you he does not have the coronavirus. concord democrat mark desonet's condition worsened after he was admitted for complications of pneumonia more than a week ago. he developed pneumonia after breaking a rib when he fell during a run. the 67-year-old is also a cancer survivor who has represented east bay on capitol hill since

abc7 news was in downtown san mateo where the streets are quiet this weekend due to the shelter-in-place order. this starbucks is normally busy on a saturday afternoon.

but it's temporarily closed for the time being. people are still going out looking to stock up on necessities. some of them very basic. in the north bay, shoppers were thrilled this morning to find a new supply of toilet paper and paper towels at a target in san rafael. >> well, they had a lot of basis point paper towels -- bounty paper towels and did have toilet paper. >> i never thought i'd be so happy buying tielt paper and paper towels, but it made my saturday. >> shoppers are still seeing shortages. you can see the empty shelves of cold and flu medicine. now despite some items selling out at times, wholesale grocery stores in the bay area say the supply chain is healthy. meantime, abc7 news was in san mateo where shoppers were lining up at the trader joe's at the hillsdale shopping center. you can see there they were practicing social distancing, staying at least six feet away there each other. but as they entered the store, obviously a little harder to do. trader joe's is one of several

in the subway for those look -- soultth bay for those lookin for exercise, san jose is leaving parks and trails open. don't plan on going to the playground, though, if you have kids. the city is closing all of them until further notice. all community centers are closed, as well. san jose is reminding people if they do head out to one of the trails or parks, to maintain social distancing. santa clara county is also keeping parks and trails open

and waiving park fees. classes have already been up-ended because of the coronavirus. now comes a change in the grading system for students at u.c. berkeley. all spring classes will now be pass/no pass, and classes are already being taught on line only. if a student does want to take a class for a letter grade, they will be able to choose, but they must make a decision by may 6th. cal is also making temporary changes when it comes to the requirements to earn a degree or minor. this is to accommodate students who take pass/no pass classes. shifting gears to the weather. nice and sunny as we see behind eric. sa but sandhya patel is in for drew -- >> this is going to last at least through tomorrow morning, dion and eric. as we look at doppler 7, we've had isolated showers today. as a matter of fact, right now it is all quiet. we had a few hundredths herehune there. thunderstorms and snow showers mixing with rain in the sierra. a few showers and ter o
