abc7 news reporter lauren martinez joins us live in walnut creek. and, lauren, what did you find? >> reporter: it is so quiet. it does not feel like a saturday night. we talked to a general manager at a bar, and she made a great point. she said what does the weekend really even mean now for all these bars and restaurants that are selling alcohol? we walked earlier to see how these businesses are adjusting. this wine bar residual sugar wine bar, they're offering bottles to go, which they never use to do before. let's keep walking down locust street and seeing what's open, what's closed and what's changed. as we walked down a florist shop said reopen on april 7th. ramon rotisserie changed their patio window to a takeout winter. next we talked to the owners of la conta, a mediterranean bar

and grill. they said they are only getting a few orders a day. >> we just have a few people maintaining the orders. >> reporter: a bar and restaurant that's been in the community for at least 40 years. they were hub taps. now they're broderick. >> we're down to five. >> reporter: they never thought they'd see the day where they would be selling alcohol at their front door. >> never thought we'd see the time. >> it's definitely -- it's going to be in the books. >> reporter: but they're staying positive and are grateful to those that are ordering takeout. >> thank you guys to all the community that's been so helpful coming in, you know, giving us business with doordashes and to-go orders. >> reporter: earlier in the day we visited 54 mint, an italian restaurant and cafe with your order to go you get a roll of toilet paper. >> it's one of the most requested items nowadays so we thought they are giving support, we give toilet paper.

that includes another 20 million n95 masks. earlier this evening governor newsom talked about the capacity to increase hospitals in california. >> some of the projections that we put out make it clear that we will need an additional 19,500 beds in order to meet our midway projections as it relates to the issue of covid-19. we have surge capacity within the hospital system of a little over 10,000. so we're out there trying to procure 10,000 units. i mentioned the 10,000 beds. >> part of the governor's plan calls for working with the army corps of engineers to convert hotel rooms, college dorms, and other facilities into rooms where patients can be treated. meantime, a surge in patients has john muir consolidating operations in the east bay. staff will be shifted to the urgent care centers in berkeley,

brentwood, walnut creek and pleasanton. it is also taking extra precautions with patients. anyone who comes in will get a mask. santa clara university is now notifying people possibly exposed to a law student who's tested positive for coronavirus. that infected student is now self-isolating at their home off campus. santa clara county officials say the student last visited and us on march 6th. the santa clara convention center will be converted into temporary medical stations. it will provide short-term care for people who do not have covid-19 as the county expects an increase in demand at hospitals as covid-19 cases rise. the medical center will add 250 beds and operate a small pharmacy. preparations began today. health officials do hope to have the medical station ready by next week. president trump talked about efforts to obtain medical supplies like masks while speaking to reporters today. he said governors like gavin newsom are free to work on finding their own ways to get

what their states need. gowns faster or masks, good masks, faster, or other things faster, that's good. we do have a lot of -- i mean, the coordination with the ships that we're sending in, as you know, the medical ships that we're sending in, and even cruise liners we're going to be sending in probably cruise liners into some areas, particularly california and in particular new york. but if somebody could do something faster, if they can order that mask faster than us, i want them to be able to do it. >> president trump also shared that he believes other states may not have to issue shelters in place orders like here in california. a south bay company has just received emergency approval from the federal government for a coronavirus test. one of the top executives with that company describes the difference between current tests and ones that are about to be

colleagues. tonight california democratic congressman is in critical condition. >> i haven't been able to get mssages returned for about a week now. so i think he's in pretty bad shape. >> reporter: he last saw his colleague last week. >> he was sore. he had fallen on a run. he's a big runner and broken a rib. so he was in a lot of discomfort. but i think the pneumonia set in probably not long after that. >> reporter: after that fall his office confirmed tonight that his condition worsened and said, in part, the doctors are doing everything they can to care for the congressman. mark's family and staff appreciate your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time. his colleagues on the floor shocked by how fast his health progressively declined. over the phone congresswoman jackie speiers spoke about her friend who was diagnosed with leukemia in 2015. >> he's got one of the finest

well, this is a weekend certainly like no other in the bay area and really across california. many are sheltered at home to help slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. but even so, a lot of people got in their cars and went to parks and beaches. you're looking at images from stinson beach where it was just packed, as you can see. cars stretched as far as the eye can go. now some local residents had enough and put up signs asking pople to go home. similar scenes played out in belinas and many local parks. here's abc7 news reporter cornell bernard.

>> reporter: this farmer's market in san mateo or the costco in south san francisco where the line was long with shoppers keeping their distance from one another. >> we're going to see what's open and then what's not open and make the best of it. >> reporter: but these tourists from the netherlands couldn't find anything open in san francisco's famous fisherman's wharf. jefferson street was deserted. lots of people out getting air . most practicing social distancing, but not all. >> as you can see, it's beautiful. there's more people out than last year at the same time. >> it seems like people are spacing themselves cautiously and walking around people. >> reporter: the health department has posted these signs about social distancing as a reminder. the sfpd taking it a step further. >> your actions could save a life. >> reporter: this public service

announcement spells it out. >> if you do go outside, maintain social distance. please try to stay at least six feet away from each other. >> reporter: in the north bay the streets of petaluma were empty. some restaurants are open doing take-out only. >> trying to go about life with some sense of normalcy. >> reporter: we talked to these golfers at a safe social distance. they said rooster run golf course was allowed to stay open with plenty of precautions. >> they sanitized all the carts before we went out. they sanitized the cart keys. >> keeping our distance from each other and out here enjoying the day. they can't visit their mom. >> reporter: these sisters couldn't visit their mom in icu so they sent their love in chalk on the sidewalk hoping mom could see it from the window. the message "we love you." this weekend here in san francisco, police say officers on patrol are reminding people

about social distancing if they see any violations. in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc7 news. in the north bay, shoppers were thrilled this morning to find a new supplies of paper towels and toilet paper at a target in san rafael. >> they had a lot of bounty paper towels and they did have toilet paper when i was in there. >> i never knew i'd be so happy buying paper towels and toilet paper. >> shoppers are still seeing some shortages though. you might see empty shelves of cold and flu medicine. despite some items selling out at times, wholesale grocery suppliers in the bay area say the supply chain is healthy. an east bay church is finding new ways to offer confessions to then. the catholic community of pleasanton is offering drive-thru confessions at the st. augustine church parking lot this afternoon. they stood six feet away from people's cars to hear

confessions and give absolution. >> for the first time it was amazingly successful. roughly 60 to 70 people came in their cars to celebrate god's love and mercy in the season of lent. we will continue to do this every saturday throughout the coronavirus crisis until that has passed as a way to help people connect with god and prepare for the great feast of easter. >> drive-thru confession is happening every saturday, and the clergy is asking for the sake of confidentiality to keep only one person per car. now in times like this, we do want to come together with our communities and the people we love. so for many that means religious gatherings, but those are off limits. even though houses of worship are dark, their light will shine right here on abc7. we are bringing together community leaders to share their sermons with you. abc7 presents "finding faith: better together." that's sunday at 10:00 a.m. and also on our website at

abc7news.com and the abc7 news app. let's get a check now with the weather. you saw the meteorologist is sheltering in place at her home, though still able to do the weather. >> that's right, i've looked at all of your forecast information, and i am bringing it to you live tonight with all the graphics. so let's take a look at what it looks like right now. look at this view from our camera as you take a look here we're looking at san francisco. visibility is good. temperatures in the mid-50s from oakland to san francisco, 52 in san jose. it's getting chilly in half moon bay. that'll change as we head towards tomorrow morning. 49 in santa rosa right now. it is 45 in napa, 48 degrees in livermore. so live doppler 7 really showing you not a lot in the way of clouds right now. we did have some earlier, as yoo as we take a look at the wider picture there's going to be more than just a shower or two.

we have the first storm of spring heading in our direction for your sunday. it's already kicking up the surf, which is why we have a beach hazard statement until 3:00 a.m. monday. we are expecting an increased risk of sneaker waves and rip currents. so definitely be careful if you decide to go to the coast to just get a little bit of sun in the morning hours and just enjoy the view. here is a view you might enjoy from our san jose camera right now. it's few clouds and patchy fogs. showers arrive tomorrow afternoon. and an unsettled pattern into the middle of next week. fog first thing in the morning will be very patchy. there will be some clouds around. and we're looking at temperatures anywhere from the upper 30s to the low 50s. i know and people on social media are saying i'm going to get my hike in early tomorrow morning or i'm going to go out for that bike ride or that walk. this will be a good time to because by afternoon we're talking about showers, much needed. it is still going to be mild just like it was today.

today highs were in the low to upper 60s. 69 in santa rosa. 68 in concord and san jose. 65 in san francisco. 67 oakland, 64 half moon bay. it's a level i system tomorrow afternoon, light to moderate showers. we're looking at a chance of thunder. the best chance will be in the south bay. definitely watch out for rough surf in case you are going to the coast line. 5:00 tomorrow morning you're fine. there is no rain yet. but we head into noon time and a couple of light spotty showers appear. by 3:00 p.m. we are talking about some moderate rainfall in some areas picking up in intensity by 5:00 p.m. don't be surprised with a little bit of heating of the day if we see a thunderstorm or two developing. sunday night still a few more showers going into early monday morning and then it's done. but there is another storm that follows. showers tomorrow afternoon and evening, chance of thunder. a few showers on monday, certainly cooler.

coronavirus test. the test can detect the coronavirus in 45 minutes or less. the company says the rapid test will help physicians provide immediate care and plan to start shipping the test cartridges before the end of the month. congressman mark desaulnier is in critical condition at a hospital tonight. the east bay democrat was admitted from complications from pneumonia after a fall two weeks ago. he has tested negative for covid-19. his office posted a statement regarding his condition has deteriorated. and now for the latest on the coronavirus pandemic in the united states. johns hopkins university is reporting 25,000 cases. that is the third highest total of any country in the world. vice president mike pence and his wife has tested negative for the virus after it was learned that one of his staff has the di news reporter core ina mitchell has the latest. >> reporter: president trump on saturday applauding the nationwide effort during the

where we may or may not be doing that, and working very closely with gavin newsom, governor of california and others. >> reporter: new york city's health department says it's limiting covid-19 testing to hospitalized patients only. this to preserve not only tests but to also save protective equipment for doctors. >> when you go in and get tested, you are consuming personal protective equipment, masks and gowns. those are high priority for the health care workers who are taking care of people who have coronavirus disease. >> reporter: officials saying the priority groups are those that are hospitalized, symptomatic health care workers, seniors, especially those in long-term care facilities, or those with pre-existing conditions. amid shortages, some distilleries are shifting gears instead of turning out alcohol to drink, now making hand sanitizer. >> i think anybody that finds themselvs in a war and we're in

a world war right now, if they can they step up. >> reporter: on saturday new jersey becoming the sixth state to close all nonessential businesses joining california, new york, illinois, pennsylvania, and nevada. more than 84 million americans are now under state directives to stay home. >> any place people congregate is a place where coronavirus can be spread. >> reporter: as for those n95 masks, the trump administration say they have signed industry contracts to manufacture up to 600 million of them over the next 18 months. the problem is federal health officials say they expect demand to surge as high as 1 billion by that time. abc news, new york. emergency room doctors and nurses say they don't fear the coronavirus as muchs ty worry about the shortage of protective gear to keep them from catching the disease and spreading it to patients. here's abc7 news anchor eric thomas who talked with a nationally known er doctor with

san francisco ties. >> reporter: this is an emergency room doctor at boston's brig ram and women's hospital and an instructor at harvard medical school. >> there really are places all around the country where we don't have what we need. there are places where it's okay and places where it's not. >> reporter: he says there are shortages of gown, plastic face shields and those n95 masks that filter out the virus. >> if we don't have what we need it kind of violates the first rule of any medical room which is seeing safety. we've got to be safe so you can be safe. >> reporter: california has received more than 350,000 masks from federal stockpiles and is requesting 20 million more. but while hospitals wait, they must see patients using what they have on hand. meantime, it he has also been thinking about what to do with patients who test positive for coronavirus but have few or no symptoms. >> every patient who comes in doesn't necessarily need a test,

expected in california itself. there are county workers who are supposed to show up to work and show up to the office. we know that this will spread the virus. we know that. this isn't something new. and so where is the leadership around that? if we know that people should be sheltering in place. >> the doctor says without proper equipment like masks and respirators, health care workers' lives are at risk. apple is donating millions of n95 masks to help out medical workers around the world. apple's ceo tim cook tweeted the 2 million masks will be distributed to healthcare centers in the u.s. and europe. it is the latest move by apple to help fight the pandemic. last week the tech company announced they are committing $15 million to help global response efforts. and a shipment of 40,000 n95 masks and 62 shz surgical masks donated by facebook arrived in marin county last night. county officials tweeted their

thanks to the social media company. the masks will be distributed to healthcare workers and first responders that are running on short supply. facebook announced they are donating about 720,000 masks. and 1.5 million pairs of gloves around the world. san francisco mayor london breed spoke with al sharpton criticizing the federal government's response to the virus. >> i really don't know where the president is on this. i hear the conversations. i hear the misinformation. i hear the divisiveness around calling this a chinese virus. now is not the time for that. the time is to come together to distribute resources to lead our country. >> the senate continues to work on a $1 trillion stimulus package. it's thought to include no strings attached payments from the federal government in april and may. they are slated to vote on that bill on monday. a second hotel is now ready to provide a place for coronavirus patients to stay in san mateo county after leaving

the hospital. that hotel is the holiday inn express. temporary fencing surrounds the hotel to keep patients isolated from the general public. health officials say hotels like this one play a critical role in the crisis, freeing up beds and hospitals for patients who need higher levels of care. an update on the grand princess cruise ship passengers now. seven of them have tested positive for coronavirus even though they haven't shown any symptoms. that is according to the san francisco chronicle. the ship came into the port of oakland after 19 crew members and two passengers had tested positive. thousands of people were then taken off and sent to quarantine. more than 800 of them have been isolated at travis air force base, and many declined to be tested. it should be made clear testing is not mandatory. well, one thing the coronavirus pandemic has not delayed are property tax payments. it doesn't matter where you live

in the state. if you don't pay by april 10th, you will likely face a penalty. and the reason for this is that the date is set by a state law and it can only be changed by the legislature. there are a few instances where exceptions are made. for instance, if the county tax collector's office is closed on april 10th or if it falls on a weekend. most counties now are providing updates on their website. the hong kong subway is using robots now to help contain the spread of coronavirus. the robot uses a hydrogen peroxide vapor to disinfect train cars. that mist circulates through the car for 15 minutes killing germs including the coronavirus. the solution is able to get into tiny areas that might be missed by standard wiping. the hong kong rail operator says the technology is a first and is helping keep riders and workers safe. music fans are mourning the death of a legend this evening, kenny rogers. ♪ you got no one to hold
