it's become a familiar sight during the coronavirus crisis, once packed downtown scenes now desolate. the deserted weekend streets now just a symbol of everyday life in our community. and this morning, the impact of the coronavirus seeping further into the bay area nearing at least 700 confirmed cases and claing 11 good morning, it's sunday, march 22nd. i'm jovina fordson. we get to our weekend forecast with meteorologist lisa argen. >> live doppler 7, a system lurking off the central california coast bringing you some of us showers. the rest of us starting out with sunshine. a level one system this afternoon, light to moderate rain and a chance of a

thunderstorm and the beach hazard statement going into effect. it is 49 with clouds in the south bay, with 49 in sunnyvale, 50 san:00 close, 41 sebastopol. we're in the mid-50s by 10:00 and by 1:00 showers pop up along the coast, the east bay. look what happens at 4:00, it's a rainy afternoon in hayward, mountain view and gilroy but not much going on in the north bay. as we go through the dinner hour, still showers east bay to the south bay and we'll see these dial back through the overnight hours. we'll talk about a cooler monday and more showers for the upcoming work week in a few minutes. this morning a couple of notes surrounding the coronavirus in the east bay, hayward issues a call for volunteers for delivering food or supplies to the elderly, or working at the emergency volunteer center. anyone 18 or older with transportation sign up at the website. in the north bay starting to

tomorrow the rower in park school district is providing free drive-through meal assistance for 18 and under, daily 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and you can see the participating schools. major changes to b.a.r.t. tomorrow, all stations run from 5:00 tom to 9:0 p.m. every weekday, three hours less than normal. weekends will be reduced to 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. starting this upcoming saturday. you have to be in the train system by 8:45 p.m. the changes are in response to a steep drop in riders and money lost during the coronavirus outbreak. b.a.r.t. ridership is down 90%. we see the bay area normally bustling on a saturday night at bars, restaurants and concerts, even sports games but not last night, in our first weekend under a shelter in place order. abc 7 news reporter lauren martinez shows you this scene from walnut creek. >> reporter: residual sugar wine bar are offering bottles to go which we never used to do

before. let's see what's open, what's closed and what's changed. as we walk down a florist shop said they'd reopen april 7th. lamone bakery turned their outdoors to a takeout. that this bar is only getting a few orders per day. >> only three people are here to maintain. >> reporter: a bar and restaurant that's been in the community for at least 40 years, they were hub caps, now broderick. >> i think we have 48 people on our schedule, we're down to five. >> reporter: they never thought they'd see the day where they would be selling alcohol at their front door. >> never thought we'd see the time. >> never! it's definitely, it's going to be in the books. >> reporter: but they're staying positive and are grateful to those that are ordering takeout. >> thank you guys to all the community in walnut creek that's

been so helpful coming in, you know, giving us business, door dashes and to go orders. >> reporter: earlier in the day, we visited 54 mint, an italian restaurant and cafe, with your order to go, you get a roll of toilet paper. >> it's the one of the most requested items nowadays, we thought they're giving support, we give toilet paper. >> reporter: and transitioning his business has had its difficulties. >> basically having the family working. >> reporter: when i asked claudio about what italy is facing, he was too emotional to respond. lauren martinez, abc 7 news. >> we just got this video from state officials moving tons of much needed supplies for health care workers. hundreds of thousands of masks, face shields and gloves, governor newsom is requesting even more from the federal government, including another 20 million n-95 masks. last night he talked about where the state stands in making room

for covid-19 patients. >> some of the projections we put out make it clear that we'll need additional 19,500 beds in order to meet our midway projections, as it relates to the issue of covid-19. we have surge capacity within the hospital system of a little over 10,000, so we're out there trying to procure 10,000 units. i mentioned the 10,000 beds. >> part of his plan calls for working with the army corps of engineers to convert hotel rooms, even college dorms and other facilities into rooms where patients can be treated. a surge in patients is forcing john muir to consolidate in the east bay, closing urgent care centers in ram, concord and orinda. sta it is taking extra precaution with patients. anyone who comes in will get a mask. the santa clara convention center will be converted into a

temporary medical station, providing short term care for people who do not have covid-19. santa clara is the hardest hit so far by the outbreak in california with at least 263 cases convirmfirmed. the medical center will operate a small pharmacy. health officials hope to have the medical station ready by next week. president trump talked about the extreme kneeled for medical supplies. he said governors like gamvin newsom are free to find their own way to get what they need. >> if gavin can find other things faster that's good. we have a lot of, i mean the coordination with the ships that we're sending in, as you know, the medical ships that we're sending in, and even cruise liners we're going to be sending in probably cruise liners into some areas in particular, california, and in particular w or thataskaster than want themo

welcome back. the big push fighting the covid-19 pandemic is giving hospitals, doctors and nurses the beds and protective equipment. many don't fear the coronavirus as much as the possibility of a shortage of gear. eric thomas talked with a nationally known doctor with ties to san francisco. >> reporter: dr. jeremy faust is an emergency room doctor at boston's brigham and women's homt and instructor at harvard medical school. >> there really are places all around the country where we don't have what we need. places where it's okay and places masks that filter out the virus. >> we have what we need. it violates the first rule of any emergency or medical problem, seen safety. we have to be safe so you can be safe.

>> reporter: california received more than 350,000 masks from federal stockpiles and is whering 20 million more but while hospitals wait, they must see patients using what they have on hand, meantime dr. faust has also been think being what to do with patients who test positive for coronavirus, but have few or no symptoms. >> every patient who comes in doesn't necessarily really need medical attention, they need diagnosis and isolation. >> reporter: hospitals want to use their beds for the most severe cases. faust's solution? >> hotel takeovers, the government should be bailing out the hotel industry. they'll be welcoming it. >> reporter: faust coauthored an op-ed in "the washington post" recommending that empty hotels be used to isolate people with coronavirus until the virus goes away. in san francisco, eric thomas, abc 7 news. the tech world is jumping in donations. apple says that it's sending millions of n-95 masks to medical workers. ceo tim cook said 2 million masks will go out to health

centers in the u.s. and europe. last week apple announced that the company would commit $15 million to help global response efforts and the shipment of 40,000 n-95 masks and 62,000 surgical masks arrived in marin county courtesy of facebook. county officials tweeted their thanks to the company yesterday and the masks will be distributed to health workers and first responders. facebook is also donating more than 700,000 masks and 1.5 million pairs of gloves around the world. with schools all around the bay area closed right now, likely until fall, many are trying to keep the kids on track with their education, but it's not easy. but we visited a school in the east bay this past week that is making it happen in a very determined and clever way. abc 7 news anchor dan ashley shows you their combination of heart and technology. >> reporter: the normally packed parking lot at valley christian school in dublin tells the story, a smattering of cars belonging to a handful of teachers. hi, guys. >> hi, dan. >> reporter: i notice we're all

cornell bernard. >> reporter: across the bay area folks were seeking anything that resembled their normal routine, like this farmer's market in san mateo, or the costco in south san francisco, where the line was long with shoppers keeping their distance from one another. >> we're going to see what's open and not open and make the best of it, right? >> reporter: but tourists jesse and lotte from the nexterlands couldn't find anything open in fisherman's wharf, most businesses and restaurants closed during the shelter in place order. jefferson street was deserted. chrissy field was a different story, lots of people out getting air and exercising, most practicing social distancing, but not all. >> as you see, there's not that much shelter in place. it's beautiful, more people out than last year at the same time. >> interesting enough it seems like people are spacing themselves cautiously, and walking around people. >> reporter: the health department has posted these signs about social distancing as a reminder. the sfpd taking it a step

further. >> your actions could save a life. >> reporter: this public service announcement spells it out. >> if you do go outside, maintain social distance, please try to stay at least six feet away from each other. >> reporter: in the north bay, the streets of petaluma were empty. some restaurants are open doing takeout only. >> time to go about life with some sense of normalcy. >> reporter: we talked to these golfers at a safe social distance. they said rooster run golf course was allowed to stay open as an essential business, with plenty of precautions. >> they sanitized all the carts before we went out, they sanitized the cart keys. >> keep our distance from each other and out here enjoying the day. >> they can't visit their mom. >> reporter: here at marin general, sisters charlene, sheryl and colette couldn't visit their mom in icu so they sent their love on sidewalk hoping mom could see it from her

room. the message "we love you." officers on patrol remind people about social distancing f they see any violations. in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. we'll check in on our weekend forecast with meteorologist lisa argen. lisa, i heard you mention some rain? >> i did. it's really the same scenario we've been seeing the rain moving up from the south bay so not everyone is going to see it, but you want to pay attention, because some of you may be getting wet and we also could see a thunderstorm. >> wow. >> so some things going on, especially over the upper elevations, and as we look at live doppler 7 right now, you can see there's moisture off the coast. this is just west of san luis obispo and will continue to spin up some showers around the bay area, mainly in the south bay and the east bay. the north bay maybe a couple hundredths. it's a level one on our storm impact scale so we could see a chance of thunderstorms throughout the afternoon. we have the high, that beach hazard statement that includes the possibility of rough surf

and rip currents from 8:00 tonight right on through early morning on mond so this is a weak system, but it isclouds,s 49 right now san mat foster city, looking at 50 in half moon bay, and 51 right here in san francisco. 41 up in the north bay. shark tank is looking at a few clouds around, but starting out with some sun, then increasing clouds and showers in the afternoon for some of you, not everyone. we'll have a cooler day on monday, a few lingering showers and then colder system moves in on tuesday and wednesday, maybe a tenth of an inch of rain, so it's not a big rain maker, but it will bring maybe a foot and a half of snow in the mountains. as we look at the beach hazard statement, the wave heights continue to come up from three to four feet right now and they'll continue right on through early tomorrow. let's take you hour by hour through your sunday, notice the clear sky here in the north bay, the clouds from the south bay to the east bay, and then by about 2:30, notice we have showers

from the peninsula to the east bay, could see a thunderstorm and they get a little bit more robust by the time we get into 4:00 or 5:00. you can see from nt,an jose, maybe sunnyvale, and along the coast here but the north bay still running pretty quiet through the overnight hours, looking at things settling down, maybe a few lingering showers into monday, the clouds will be with us, it will be a cooler afternoon to start the work week. rainfall through 8:00 on monday anywhere from nothing to maybe a quarter of an inch in oakland but as you get closer perhaps to the coast, maybe underneath one of those thunderstorms, you could see anywhere from a half inch to maybe three-quarters of an inch. highs today looking at mid-60s. it's a mild day. where we have the rain mostly from the south to the east, and looking at a possibility of a thunderstorm if you get under one of those robust downpours. so as we look into next week, you'll see the showers arrive on monday, tuesday, then moving out of here on wednesday but very light. wish there was more rain to talk

months. federal health officials expect demand to surge as high as 1 billion by that time. karina mitchell, abc news, new york. the governor of hawaii issued a mandatory 14-day quarantine for anyone arriving outside the state. it applies to all travelers, including hawaiian residents who must quarantine at home. visitors must stay in their hotel room or rented lodging. people can leave only for medical emergencies. anyone who violates the order may be fined up to $5,000 or one year in prison. it starts this thursday and will remain in effect indefinitely. also new this morning the mayor of las vegas is pushing back against the governor of nevada and wants to keep casinos open. on tuesday the governor ordered the casinos to shut down for 30 days but the mayor says her city should be allowed to stay open for business. the economy depends on tourism > fema administrator petef new

pandemic has not delayed for us, your property tax payments. they are still due by april 10th. it doesn't appear or rather doesn't matter where you live in the state. if you don't pay back by then, you'll likely face a penalty and the reason why here, that date is set by state law and it can only be changed by the legislature. most counties are now providing updates on their website for you to check them out. religious organizations are having to completely rethink their way of life with the threat of covid-19. abc 7 witnessed one east bay church finding new ways to offer confessio confessions. the catholic community of pleasanton is doing a drive-through style at the st. augustine church parking lot. yesterday the father stood six feet away from people's cars to hear their confessions, and provide forgiveness. >> so for the first time, we had drive-through con"s here in amiy roughly 60 to 70 people came to

north bay once again getting left out for the most part, maybe a few hundredths, if you want to go on a bike ride don't worry about the rain north of the golden gate. time it out in the morning. by the afternoon some showers will be arriving and then later afternoon as well. it's a level one system, looking at today the rain, the showers, could see a thunderstorm, and that's where we could get some heavier downpours. so we're going to look at our beach hazard statement as well tonight, into tomorrow, a live look outside, this is emeryville, where winds not a factor this morning. we are looking at temperatures on the cool side, where it's been clear all night long, in the north bay. a quick look at that radar showed the system offshore that is going to push to the south of us, and inland, and that's why the rain is going to be pretty much out of the north bay, and really mainly in the east bay and south bay, peninsula as well. 50 alame . it is 49 in hayward and looking at the cooler numbers in the upper 30s from napa. 41 in novato.

here is a look at the airport, where probably very quiet out there today. starting out with some sunshine, the showers will arrive just a few scattered showers maybe, 1:00, 2:00 in the afternoon, and by later on, they'll increase. so the bulk of the day really not too bad. starting out monday with some clouds, it will be cooler, mostly cloudy and maybe a lingering shower. otherwise next system arrives tuesday and wednesday. it's going to be a cold one. we talked about the wave heights anywhere from two to three feet yesterday, already five feet w bodega period. northwesterly swells from the sonoma coast to the central coast. as we go through the morning we have clear skies here to the north, and some clouds to the east. this is 10:00.t then and by about 2/2:30 we have showers from the east bay, the diablo range and also along the coast. if you're thinking of going to the beach, will you get wet out there later on this afternoon. sunday, 5:00 could see a

thn the orange and then things will get a lot quieter overnight tonight. still a chance of a shower and as we get into your monday, we're looking at the cooler conditions. how much rain? the darker shade from the east bay to the south bay, anywhere from about a third of an inch to over a half inch, if you're underneath one of the heavier downpours, a thunderstorm. mid-60s where we have more of the clouds, upper 60s in the north bay, so increasing clouds throughout the day, and let's take a look at the next seven days, that's going to show us that we could see another third of an inch in san francisco, maybe a tenth in the north bay. the accuweather seven-day forecast the level one system later on today, a break tomorrow and the cold showers tuesday and wednesday, that's a big snowmaker in the mountains, could see anywhere from a foot to foot and a half with that system which is certainly some good news, and some sun by the end of the week. typical for march, the showers out there. >> yes, a little mixed bag this week, a little bit of everything. thank you, lisa. >> okay. now to something we call a

we get to our weekend forecast with meteorologist lisa argen. >> hey, jovina, good morning to you. live doppler 7 showing a system offshore. this is certainly south of us, but it will be moving closer to the coast and it will provide showers for the coast and peninsula and the south bay, even the east bay. as we look at san jose, clouds now. elsewhere it's clear and colder to the north with 40 in clear lake,vallejo, 50 in san jose. look the clouds increasing throughout the day but temperatures mild, mid-50s by noontime. mid-60s but showers arrive throughout the afternoon, scattered and i think the north bay is probably the only place you won't see too much activity. it's a level one system and things quiet down by tonight. we'll talk in detail about next week, coming up. jovina? >> thank you, lisa. this morning we start with a
