we have much more to get to on our lives as they adjust to this coronavirus outbreak. we get to our weekend forecast with meteorologist lisa argen. >> hey, jovina, good morning to you. live doppler 7 showing a system offshore. this is certainly south of us, but it will be moving closer to the coast and it will provide showers for the coast and peninsula and the south bay, even the east bay. as we look at san jose, clouds now. elsewhere it's clear and colder to the north with 40 in clear lake,vallejo, 50 in san jose. look the clouds increasing throughout the day but temperatures mild, mid-50s by noontime. mid-60s but showers arrive throughout the afternoon, scattered and i think the north bay is probably the only place you won't see too much activity. it's a level one system and things quiet down by tonight. we'll talk in detail about next week, coming up. jovina? >> thank you, lisa. this morning we start with a couple more than notes

surrounding the coronavirus outbreak, in the east bay, the city of hayward is issuing a call for volunteers for things like delivering food or supplies to the elderly, or working at the mblg volu the emergency volunteer center. anyone 18 or older with transportation sign up at the website. in the north bay starting to tomorrow the catadi rohnert park school district is providing free drive-through meal assistance for 18 and under, daily 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and you can see the participating schools. major changes to b.a.r.t. set to kick in tomorrow, all stations run from 5:00 tom to 9:00 p.m. every weekday, three hours less than normal. weekend service will be reduced to 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. starting this upcoming saturday. you have to be in the train system by 8:45 p.m. the changes are in response to a steep drop in riders and money lost during the coronavirus outbreak. b.a.r.t. ridership is down 90%. we see the bay area normally bustling on a saturday night at bars, restaurants and concerts,

even sports games but not last night, in our first weekend lar. abc 7 ne rorter lauren martinez shows you this scene from walnut creek. >> reporter: this wine bar, residual sugar wine bar are offering bottles to go which they never used to do before. let's keep walking down locust street and seeing what's open, what's closed and what's changed. as we walk down, a florist shop said they'd reopen april 7th. lamone rose tis ree changed their outdoor patio is a timeout window. next door a mediterranean grill and bar, they said they're only getting a few to-go orders a day. >> so far all the employees are gone, so we are only three people are here to just maintain. >> reporter: a bar and restaurant that's been in the community for at least 40 years, they were hub caps, now they're broderick. >> i think we have 48 people on our schedule, we're down to

five. >> reporter: they never thought they'd see the day where they would be selling alcohol at their front door. >> never thought we'd see the time. >> never! it's definitely, it's going to be in the books. >> reporter: but they're staying positive and are grateful to those that are ordering takeout. >> t been so helpful coming in, you know, giving us business, door dashes and to go orders. >> reporter: earlier in the day, we visited 54 mint, an italian restaurant and cafe, with your order to go, you get a roll of toilet paper. >> it's the one of the most requested items nowadays, we thought they're giving support, we give toilet paper. >> reporter: and transitioning his business has had its difficulties. >> basically having the family working. >> reporter: when i asked claudio about what italy is facing, he was too emotional to respond. lauren martinez, abc 7 news.

>> that's really touching. we just got this video from state officials moving tons of much needed supplies for health care workers. hundreds of thousands of masks, face shields and gloves, governor gavin newsom is requesting even more from the federal government, including another 20 million n-95 masks. last night he talked about where the state stands in making room for covid-19 patients. >> some of the projections we put out make it clear that we'll need additional 19,500 beds in order to meet our midway projections, as it relates to the issue of covid-19. we have surge capacity within the hospital system of a little over 10,000, so we're out there trying to procure 10,000 units. i mentioned the 10,000 beds. >> part of his plan calls for working with the army corps of engineers to convert hotel rooms, even college dorms and other facilities into rooms where patients can be treated. a surge in patients is forcing john muir to consolidate in the

east bay, closing urgent care centers in san ramon, cop cord and orinda. staff will shifts to centers in berkeley, brent wood, walnut creek and pleasanton. it is taking extra precaution with patients. anyone who comes in will get a mask. the santa clara convention center will be converted into a temporary medical station, the center will provide short term care for people who do not have covid-19. as the county expects an increase in demand at hospitals. santa clara is the hardest hit so far by the outbreak in california with at least 263 cases confirmed. the medical center will add 250 beds and operate a small pharmacy. health officials hope to have the medical station ready by next week. speaking with reporters, president trump talked about the extreme need for medical supplies. he said governors like gavin newsom are free to work on finding their own ways to get what their states need. >> if gavin can order gowns faster or masks, good masks

coronavirus. he does not have it. the concord democrats' condition has worsened, though, after he was admitted for complications of pneumonia last friday. abc 7 news reporter luz pena spoke to several of his colleagues. >> reporter: california democrat congressman desaulniers in critical condition. >> i haven't been able to get messages returned for about a week now, so i think he's in pretty bad shape. >> reporter: congressman jared hoffman last saw his colleague last week. >> he was sore. he had fallen on a run. he's a big runner, and broken a rib, so he was in a lot of discomfort, but i think the pneumonia set in probably not long after that. >> reporter: after that fall, his office confirmed the congressman's condition worsened and said "the doctors are doing everything they can to care for the congressman. mark's family and staff appreciate your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time." his colleagues on the floor shocked by how fast his health progressively declined.

over the phone, congresswoman jackie speier spoke of her friend who was diagnosed with stage four chronic leukemia in 2015. >> he's got one of the finest intellects and sharpest minds in congress, and i just think the world of him. >> on twitter, representative barbara lee sending him strength, love and prayers. a common sentiment shared by many. representative eric swalwell asking for prayers for his east bay neighbor and saying "he needs us." congressman desaulniers took a covid-19 test and the results came back negative. we are wishing him well. in the newsroom, luz pena, abc 7 news. >> we are definitely wishing him g siadice, crow edute with

hospitals, doctors and nurses the beds and protective equipment. many don't fear the coronavirus as much as the possibility of a shortage of gear. abc 7 news anchor eric thomas talked with a nationally known e.r. doctor with ties here to san francisco. >> reporter: san francisco native dr. jeremy faust is an emergency room doctor at boston's brigham and women's hospital and instructor at harvard medical school. >> there really are places all around the country where we don't have what we need. there are places where it's okay and places where it's not. >> reporter: he says there are shortages of gowns, plastic face shields and the n-95 masks that filter out the virus. >> we have what we need. it violates the first rule of any emergency or medical problem, seen safety. we have to be safe so you can be safe. >> reporter: california received more than 350,000 masks from federal stockpiles and is requesting 20 million more, but while hospitals wait, they must see patients using what they have on hand, meantime dr. faust has also been thinking about

what to do with patients who test positive for coronavirus, but have few or no symptoms. >> every patient who comes in doesn't necessarily really need medical attention, they need diagnosis and isolation. >> reporter: hospitals want to use their beds for the most severe cases. faust's solution? >> hotel takeovers, the government should be bailing out the hotel industry. they'll be welcoming it. >> reporter: faust coauthored an op-ed in "the washington post" recommending that empty hotels be used to isolate people with coronavirus until the virus goes away. in san francisco, eric thomas, abc 7 news. the tech world is jumping in with donations to help this morning. cupertino-based apple says that it's sending millions of n-95 masks to medical workers. ceo tim cook tweeted 2 million masks will go out to health centers in the u.s. and europe. last week apple announced that they would commit $15 million to help the global response efforts. great news there. and the shipment of 40,000 n-95 masks and 62,000 surgical masks just arrived in marin county, courtesy of facebook.

county officials tweeted their thanks to the company yesterday and the masks will be distributed to health workers and first responders. facebook is also donating more than 700,000 masks and 1.5 million pairs of gloves around the world. with schools all around the bay area closed likely until the fall, trying to keep the kids on track with their education, but it's not easy. but we visited a school in the east bay this past week that is making it happen in a very determined and clever way. abc 7 news anchor dan ashley shows you their combination of heart and technology. >> reporter: the normally packed parking lot at valley christian school in dublin tells the story, a smattering of cars belonging to a handful of teachers. hi, guys. >> hi, dan. >> reporter: i notice we're all at a safe distance here. >> yes, we are. >> reporter: i was met by the head of schools and lead pastor, working hard to make sure their students continue learning in as close to a normal routine as possible, and of course, school isn't just about books. it's also about belonging and a sense of community.

>> they want to be in connection with their teachers and with each other even though they can't be here. >> reporter: to that end, valley christian school is all in, every teacher and every student. katie werner teaches middle school technology, a happy coincidence since she's using technology to make sure her class continue with all her students attending real time online. >> just reassuring the students that yes, it's a difficult time right now but it's important to remember that we're a community and we're here to help in any way we can, making them feel successful. >> reporter: katie and her fellow teachers are all isolated safely in their classrooms with their students safely, joining them from home. how successful was this program on day two of this experiment? 100% participation today, every single kid was in a virtual classroom with their teacher. >> what it's doing, it's ensuring some level of continuity and stability in the home, because in this time right now, the last thing we need is kids at home doing nothing. >> reporter: angela, i would imagine you've never been more

proud of your school and teachers, staff and students. >> i am so proud of my staff. i could beam for valley. i keep telling them, we're valley strong! this is amazing! >> reporter: dan ashley, abc 7 news. >> that really is amazing. in the days ahead, the school is making is possible for more teachers to work from home with their full class schedule. many tell us they're happy to come into the school, determined to keep teaching. here say sight amid the bay area's shelter in place order, not much social distancing here at stinson beach. it was packed yesterday. cars stretched as far as you could see. we saw the same lines at many other local parks and beaches and some local residents had enough of that, put up signs asking for people to go home. here is abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard. >> reporter: across the bay area folks were seeking anything that resembled their normal routine, like this farmer's market in san mateo, or the costco in south san francisco, where the line was long with shoppers keeping their distance from one another. >> we're going to see what's open and not open and make the best of it, right?

>> reporter: but tourists jesse and lotte from the netherlands couldn't find anything open in san francisco's famous fisherman's wharf, most businesses and restaurants jefferson street was deserted. chrissy field was a different , but not all. >> as you see, there's not that much shelter in place. it's beautiful, more people out than last year at the same time. >> interesting enough it seems like people are spacing themselves cautiously, and walking around people. >> reporter: the health department has posted these signs about social distancing as a reminder. the sfpd taking it a step further. >> your actions could save a life. >> reporter: this public service announcement spells it out. >> if you do go outside, maintain social distance, please try to stay at least six feet away from each other. >> reporter: in the north bay,

the streets of petaluma were empty. some restaurants are open doing takeout only. >> time to go about life with some sense of normalcy. >> reporter: we talked to these golfers at a safe social distance. they said rooster run golf course was allowed to stay open as an essential business, with plenty of precautions. >> they sanitized all the carts before we went out, they sanitized the car keys. >> keep our distance from each other and out here enjoying the day. >> they can't visit their mom. >> reporter: here at marin general, sisters charlene, cheryl and colette couldn't visit their mom in icu so they sent their love in chalk on the sidewalk, hoping mom could see it from the window. the message "we love you." this weekend here in san francisco, police say officers on patrol are reminding people about social distancing if they see any violations. in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. morlgz lisa meteorologist lisa argen is tracking our forecast.

i feel like people will take any rain we can get. >> that's true although it was nice to have the sun. we were looking at a nice start to the day there, but also some clouds throughout the afternoon. this is a weather system off the coast and going to arrive later on today, allowing for showers pretty much everywhere, except in the north bay. so closer inspection you see it along the central coast from monterey, and as we go through the afternoon, could even see a thunderstorm and that's where we could see a heavier downpour upwards of over a quarter of an inch, a level one system for this afternoon into the evening hours, light to moderate showers. chance of a thunderstorm and looking at the rough surf, rip currents as our beach hazard statement takes us through early monday. it is 50 in oakland. 49 in hayward. 50 in san jose with cooler, low 40s to the north and the golden gate bridge and throughout the day. if we see any rain in the north bay, it should be on the outer, the range of about a couple hundredths of an inch. not much at all. starting out with some sunshine,

and afternoon and evening showers, it will be cooler as we start out your monday, looking at a few lingering showers, and then plenty of clouds around, next system arrives tuesday and wednesday, maybe a tenth, 0.2, it's a cold system but a good snowmaker in the mountains. current wave heights four to five feet from san francisco to half moon bay and this beach hazard statement has those long period northwesterly swells from sonoma all the way down to the central coast here and you saw that storm system off the coast as well. looking at more rain for the central coast, southern california, but as we get closer to the bay, south bay, it has been doing pretty well as well as parts of the east bay. here we are at 2:00, you can see some showers, perhaps along the peninsula here, into the east bay, and then they really begin to blossom, as we get towards 4:00 or 5:00. we've got the heating of the sun. you can see maybe some heavier downpours, a thunderstorm. here we are 7:00, and maybe a few scattered showers in the city, and the overnight hours things get pretty quiet. lots of clouds around, though,

and the next system allowing for a break on monday, tuesday, into wednesday. look at the north bay, a couple hundredths here, quarter inch in the east bay. could see a thunderstorm and that's why some of the totals look like they're excessive but if you get underneath one of the thunderstorms you could see the heavier rain. mid-60s today. going to be mild despite the shower activity, upper 60s where the sun is shining longer, and that will be in the north bay. as we take you through later on monday into tuesday, and wednesday, looking at maybe a foot or more of snow in the mountains with this system. the accuweather seven-day forecast, a level one system with showers in the afternoon, maybe a thunderstorm, a break on monday, but look at the temperatures sliding into your monday. highs 50s tuesday and wednesday with cold showers. thursday looks to be nice and toward the end of the week looking dry out there. you're right, jovina, any sort of rain we get is what we need but we're way below average, probably about 40% to 50% for

here is a few from mt. tam. nice here with the clear sky. clouds increasing elsewhere around the bay and 52 in san francisco, 50 in oakland, 50 in san jose as well as mafl moon bay. here is a look from sutro san francisco with partly cloudy skies. 41 in santa rosa, 40 in napa and 45 iconcor the morniur partly cloudy conditions, 10:00, mid and upper 50s, 1:00 a few showers begin to pop up. it's a mild day with mid-60s around the bay, to upper 60s in the north bay, but look what happens by 4:00/5:00, we have more rain arriving from the east bay to the peninsula, and the south bay, it continues throughout the 6:00 hour, the north bay being spared and a quiet night tonight, a cool start to the work week with more showers arriving midweek. jovina? >> thank you, lisa. overnight the bay area is reaching close to at least 700 cases of coronavirus, with 11 deaths. take a look at the map here, santa clara county is still the hardest hit with 263 total cases.

the u.s. is dealing with nearly 27,000 cases nationwide, the third highest total in the world right now. abc news is confirming top senate leaders are meeting behind closed door to discuss a $1 trillion relief bill. abc 7 news reporter karina mitchell has more. >> reporter: president trump speaking at the white house saturday, applauding the nationwide effort during the covid-19 crisis. >> governors, mayors, businesses, charities and citizens are all working with urgency and speed toward one common goal, which is saving american lives. >> reporter: lawmakers are working on a bipartisan covid-19 economic relief package that could cost more than $1 trillion. the white house coronavirus task force addressing concerns over shortages of medical supplies for health care workers. >> hhs is completing a half a billion dollar order of n-95 masks, and all of this is being

coordinated through fema, and we are responding specifically to state requests where the needs arrive. >> reporter: abc's trevor ult pressed for a time on when the supplies will be available. >> we'll prioritize those scarce resources, because every single governor across the country is looking for the exact same thing. >> reporter: new york state declared a major disaster area. >> i'm considering other areas where we may or may not be doing that, and working very closely with gavin newsom, governor of california, and others. >> reporter: new york city's health department says it's limiting covid-19 testing to hospitalized patients only, this to preserve not only tests but also save protective equipment for doctors. >> when you go in and get tested, you are consuming personal protective equipment, masks and gowns. those are high priority for the health care workers who are

taking care of people who have . >> reporter: officials saying the priority groups are those that are hospitalized, symptomatic health care workers, seniors especially those in long-term care facilities, or those with preexisting conditions. amid shortages, some distilleries are shifting gears instead of turning out alcohol to drink, now making sand sanitizer. >> i think anybody that finds themselves in a war and we're in a world war right now, if they can, they step up. >> reporter: on saturday, new jersey becoming the sixth state to close all nonessential businesses, joining california, new york, illinois, pennsylvania, and nevada. more than 84 million americans are now under state directives to stay home. >> any place people congregate is a place where coronavirus can be spread. >> reporter: as for those n-95 masks, the trump administration says they have signed industry contracts to manufacture up to 600 million over the next 18
