a family stuck in peru, after that government closed its borders and canceled all flights amid the covid-19 outbreak, hoping to come back home soon. >> tonight, a bay area hospital tells us they need supplies. we'll tell you what they're looking for average break from the rain tomorrow, before a cool and wet system arrives on tuesday. abc 7 news starts now. good evening. i'm eric thomas. the number of coronavirus cases in california has exploded over the weekend. there are now close to 1500 people infected with thousands more awaiting test results. the number of deaths is steadily rising, at least 27 people have died from coronavirus. president trump today declared a major disaster decoration for the state, because of the pandemic.

santa clara county reported two more deaths today from the coronavirus pushing the regional total up to 13. it is by far the most cases in the bay area, topping 300. but every county now has reported cases. napa county, confirming today, two residents there have been infected. if was the last county in the, it was the last county in the region to have a case of the disease. the bay area total is just shor short of the 800 mark. we've been getting questions from lake and mendocino county and mendocino county has one case and lake county has not had anyone infected. the president's major disaster declaration will bring in badly-needed federal help to the state. it includes everything from mask care to unemployment assistance. the president activated the natural guard in california, washington and new york. it will cost the states nothing and gives them full control. also, he is sending a hospital ship to l.a. >> the naval hospital ship, the usns mercy, which is an

incredible ship, these two ships are incredible. one on the west coast, one on the east coast, deployed to los angeles, to add emergency surge medical capacity. >> the mercy is expected to arrive within a week. it has 12 fully equipped operating rooms, a thousand bed hospital, a medical lab and a pharmacy. president trump is also sending large quantities of medical supplies within the next 48 hours. as coronavirus cases continue to increase in the bay area, so does the need for medical supplies. the area's major hospitals say they are in need and now they're asking for donations. abc 7 news reporter jr stone is following this story. he's now live in san francisco. jr? >> reporter: well, eric, right now, many of these hospitals are okay, but it could be a much different story in just two to three weeks. a garage full of masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer, being donated to bay area hospitals, by bella nails in san mateo. >> one of my long-time clients

texted me and asked if there is any way i can help. >> vivian nguyen did just that, by working with suppliers to donate 42,000 gloves and more than 1300 masks this. as coronavirus cases continue to rise. and bay area hospitals are put to the test. >> it's challenging. i'll be honest with you. because with the market, and the amount of supply availability. >> reporter: specialty medical swabs and gowns are in high demand at ucsf. they along with others like stanford are asking for things like unused n-95 and surgical masks, and unopened packages of gloves, and unused protective goggle, and sanitizer. >> for the region, that's where a lot of the ppe manufacturing has been, and so when those started shutting down, our suppliers started getting impacted. >> reporter: ucsf students at the front line sunday, when we spoke with them, they had received more than 8,000 donated items. >> we're getting masks, surgical masks, and n-95 masks, which is

a lot of people bought for the wildfires and we're also getting a lot of gloves, goggles and face shields and bunny suits. >> it feels good to help. there has been a lot of friends and family on social media who have reached out who are willing to help fund the cost for this, because obviously it takes a whole village. >> reporter: and back out here live, you are looking live at san francisco, where all is quiet this evening. i can tell you, ucsf is holding supply donation events tomorrow at three different locations. their mission location, the mountain zion location, and also the children's hospital in oakland. reporting live in san francisco, jr stone, abc 7 news. >> thank you. ucsf is getting help from sales for, the ceo tweeted today that the sales force community delivered 9,000 masks to the hospital. it is now working to deliver another five million this week,

along with other critical personal protective equipment. santa clara county supervisor cindy chavez held a different kind of press conference this afternoon to update the county's efforts to respond to the coronavirus. she kept her social distance by holding a conference call, with santa clara valley medical center chief executive officers paul lorenz and other officials. county officials are preparing to treat a surge of critical ill patients if the virus spreads. >> that plan would include looking at all 2100 adult beds that we can equip and staff for critical ill patients. >> lore enz says people without covid-19 would be moved to other facilitates to accommodate the more seriously infected patients. one of those facilities is the city of santa clara's convention center. it will be for up to 250 people who need medical care. president trump has called for eight of these federal medical stations to be set up in california, providing 2,000

additional hospital beds. now to a story we've been covering all week. the wife of an abc 7 news employee has tested positive for covid-19. maria gomez is an employee of santa clara county. she and her husband have been self quarantining for a week and will continue to do so for another week, per the quarantine guidelines. gomez is feeling much better, and her husband never had any symptoms. we'll have more of an update on the family tomorrow, right here on abc 7. hayward will take matters into its own hands tomorrow when the city opens up its own covid-19 testing site. the site will be located near fire station seven apt and huntwood avenue. the hours from 9:00 in the morning until 6:00 in the evening. 200 to 350 tests will be administered daily, fwree ree o charge, open to first responder, medical personnel, and anyone who feels sick with symptoms of the virus. >> we obviously do have limited test kits each day, so we will test as many people as we can.

w are working with the surrounding communities and the sal me da county health department to help other cities with test sites. >> the city is opening the site to alleviate pressure from emergency rooms an hospitals which is anticipating a surge in patients. marin county, people could not stay away from the parks and inundated them and created a lot of anxiety among residents who were trying to practice social distancing and minimize contact. cornell bernard found residents telling visitors to stay away. >> reporter: the residents took matters into their own hands posting themselves at the town's entrance pleading with visitors to turn around. they clapped and cheered when drivers obeyed. >> i want everyone to be aware that this isn't a spring break. it is not a vacation. it is a pandemic we are to stay at home. >> they posted signs to send a message. on saturday bolinas and stinson

beach were overrun with cars and visitors looking for a break and beaches were packed. >> we wonder why it was okay to swarm stinson beach. >> diana has lived in stinson beach for 50 years. >> we want to be safe. i'm an old gray hair and i want to be safe, and i don't feel like i can even walk my dog right now. >> someone posted these green flyers, saying if due live here, go home, and stay there. you are putting us in danger. crowds force the closure of the stunson beach parking lot, sky oaks road on mount tam was also closed off due to crowds. the sheriff's department tweeted shelter in place is not a vai vacation. we strongly advise moving away from your home to enjoy the scenery somewhere else. >> we advise people to take the public health order seriously. it's not a joke. it's not a drill. >> it is important to practice social distancing.

paper. abc 7 news reporter luce pena has more on the story. >> reporter: it is complex measures but in this case, a very creative and timely way to go grocery shopping they found that it is a no touch store and a source says it is basically a drive-through where you can pick up your groceries. >> small business, restaurants and their employees are all struggling, pushing many business owners to pivot to survive. >> the whole idea is to keep them working so we're not really making money doing this. we're doing this to make sure that families can feed their families. after closing five of the restaurants in the last week, alex holt came up with this. the no touch drive threw grocery store. >> you pull up, mcdonald's stooild style, you look at a menu that we offer and pick your choices and pull up to the next little place and you make your payment. >> chicken and rice. >> a new concept targets social distancing. something many shoppers have found complicated at the grocery store. >> i was about six feet in front of the person in front of me and

evening on weekdays. that's a three-hour reduction in service. and weekend service will be reduced to 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. starting this upcoming saturday. people have to be in the station no later than 8:45 to catch the last train. it is also eliminated the extra commute trains. bart says ridership is down 90%. social distancing is being practiced at bay area bridges. they are now cash-free for the time being. the change went in effect yesterday at the seven bridges in the bay area. the golden gate bridge has been cash-free for several years now. the goal is to minimize contact between toll collectors and drivers. drivers without fast track will be billed by mail with cameras taking pictures of license plates. there is no change for those who already have fast track. from developing a faster test to cracking the coronavirus, the bay area is in the forefro a look at what scientists are doing right now to get a better understanding of the virus and how they can help in developing drugs to treat. it trying to get home a bay

think again. the county health department has ordered the closure of all waterways to boating. motels and hotels and vacation rentals are no longer able to take reservations but there are exceptions. people who have to be lake county residents or essential employees. right now the race to find a treatment for this virus is happening in the bay area at ucsf where scientists are on a mission to break down the dna of the virus, and identify which of the human proteins it interacts with. that information will provide a critical road map for scientists. >> there's a lot of effort out there trying to develop drugs to target the virus, which is great. we're taking a different approach. we're looking step by step, starting at the exact protein but branching out and expanding that list, to see what we have that could sort of corden off the virus. >> ucsf researchers have found about 50 drugs that are already fda approved that interact with the same proteins as the virus and they're looking for more. peru has sealed its borders

in an attempt to stop the spread of the coronavirus. in the south american country, hundreds of american tourists are stranded, including a santa rosa police officer, and his family. abc 7 news reporter luz pena spoke to a local family and has their story. >> reporter: it started as a dream vacation. two days later, the unexpected happened. >> 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning, we woke up, on monday morning and had that panic, out of the bed, and oh, my gosh, peru is closing the borders, we need to get out. >> exactly a week ago today. peru's president declared a state of emergency. closing their borders and mandating a 15-day quarantine. tourists were given 24 hours to evacuate. >> and we went down to the airport, and the airport had been surrounded by the peruvian military and they were basically barring anyone from coming into the airport. >> and the family is not alone. there's also a facebook group,

over 3,000 members, who say they're also american, stuck in peru. hoping for the u.s. government to get back to them, and fly them back home. >> california congressman jared hubman says at least 30 of his constituents, including the family we talked about are stranded overseas. >> what is the u.s. doing to bring the families back? >> right now they're really not and that is part of our frustration. the state department is giving useless advice, telling people to search the private airline's web sites for flight, and flights are getting canceled. >> today, the words from president donald trump during the press conference were directed to this group of americans. >> we're working very hard on getting a young group of people out of peru. >> words that the family are holding on to, while looking at this map of confirmed covid-19 cases, increasing every day, in peru. the latest count, 363.

>> every day, i have kind of woken up with the hope of today's going to be the day, today is going to be the day that it is going to happen. >> in san francisco, luz pena, abc 7 news. hundreds of quarantined passengers from the grand princess cruise ship are just a day or two from getting their freedom back. michelle heckert tweeted a thanks to the stranger who donated pizza to the group tonight. she and hundreds of others have been in quarantine at travis air force base since disembarking from the ship earlier this month. the grand princess by the way is still anchored in the bay. the airline industry has been devastated by the coronavirus. but we have one bit of positive news. three chinese airlines plan to resume nonstop flights to francisco. china eastern plans to resume sfo and shanghai flights by the end of the month and china week, and air china resumed the nonstop daily service to beijing on saturday. these flights were suspended at the height of the virus outbreak

in wuhan. shifting now to the weather, the rain certainly returned today to parts of the bay area. this video was taken this afternoon, near downtown san jose, where there was a downpour and reports of thunder and lightning as well. the national weather service said the storm was capable of producing small hail. but some of us couldn't see much, or any precipitation at all. >> it was quite a range. some areas had sunshine. some had downpours. and thunderstorms. even some small hail. and it's all due to the system that is heading south and then moving inland overnight. you can see with live doppler 7 and the satellite radar image. it has headed south. we could still see some isolated showers and tomorrow morning, it should bed center over las vegas, but this system has brought quite a bit of rain and still bringing rain to southern california. right now the north end of it has moved south of san jose toward monterey so there have been some heavy downpours at times but it is a quick-moving system. temperatures right now are in the 40s and 50s.

one of the cooler spots is clear lake at 46 degrees. and in san francisco, we currently are at 55. n se. cck from our roof camera, looking out at the embarcadero and the bridge. so we do have a gorgeous night ahead of us. with some possible isolated showers. so for tomorrow, it is mostly dry with a pop-up shower. maybe coming your way. but i think most of us, we continent get any precipitation. then we've got some shelter in place weather. cold showers. tuesday and wednesday. you'll notice temperatures will be much cooler and well below average. but then things turn around, and we'll have a warming trend that continues to start through the end of the week and continues into the weekend. so we'll see what happens next weekend, as people try to stay home and follow these orders. here's a look at the forecast animation. so you notice, after midnight, all this rain, out of the bay area, for the most part, and then that moves south. now tomorrow, we'll get mostly dry conditions.

but i am picking up. so models showing some possible isolated showers, especially monday night, into tuesday. so tuesday is when the system arrives, it is a cold-moving system, that will also bring us some scattered showers, but still overall, light rain, so not a lot of precipitation for us, but it will bring, see all of that white stuff, lots of snow to the sierras, tuesday into thursday. overnight lows will be in the 40s and 50s. we'll see some cool numbers in the forth bay. clearer skies tonight. low 40s there in santa rosa, and napa, 42, and some 50s around the bay, like san francisco and san mateo, and some upper 40s around san jose, and concord and in livermore. and tomorrow, temperatures will be a little bit cooler as well. and here, you can see, we could get a little shower here and there. half moon bay, 56. san francisco, 57. and so lots of upper 50s to low 60s. and oakland, 59 degrees. and san jose, 62. and fairfield, and antioch, some of our warmer spots, 63 degrees in antioch. so here is the accu-weather

thomas. in tonight's headline, marin county is closing all parks because of overcrowding. on saturday, bolinas and stinton beach were overrun with cars and visitors looking for a break from the stay at home order. some residents in west marin put up signs reading, if you don't live here, go home and stay there. bay area hospitals are in desperate need of medical supplies and turning to anyone who could help. specialty medical swabs and gowns are in high demand at ucsf and stanford is looking for unused n-95 and surgical masks. students hit the streets and they already referred more than 8,000 donated items. peru has sealed its borders in an attempt to stop the spread of the coronavirus. hundreds of american tourists are stranded including a santa rosa police officer and his family. president trump said he's working hard on getting a young group of people out of peru. lawmakers in washington are working on an economic relief bill, because of the

coronavirus. the senate is expected to hold a vote tomorrow, meantime governors from around the country are trying to answer the growing demands for personal protective equipment for health care workers. abc reporter zachary keish has the story. >> reporter: talks resumed on capitol hill today as lawmakers worked to put together a package, now expected to provide at least $2 trillion in economic relief amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. >> this is about direct assistance to the american people, and to small businesses, to hospitals, and others, who are in need, because we in government at all levels, in order to deal with this pandemic, have basically shut the economy down. >> president trump at the white house, saying -- >> our goal is to get relief to americans as quickly as possible. so that families can get by and small businesses can keep workers on the payroll. this will help our economy. >> reporter: with at least six states ordering all nonessential

workers to stay home, and many businesses shuttering, millions of americans are now out of work. >> new jersey's governor says his state, along with new york, connecticut, and pennsylvania, need $100 billion in direct cash assistance to fight the pandemic, as well as personal protective equipment for medical professionals. >> we've had a big ask in the strategic stockpile in the white house, they've given us a fraction of our ask. >> reporter: in addition to the economic hardship, the outbreak is take can its toll on the nation's health care system. >> we are the united states of america. we should not have to be in a position where we have people die simply because we don't have adequate supply or adequate beds or adequate work force. >> the white house coronavirus task force says it's working with the department of health and human services to get much-needed personal protective equipment to hospitals across the country. >> the federal government has deployed hundreds of tons of supplies from our national stockpile to locations with the greatest need. >> reporter: new york city's health department is limiting covid-19 testing to hospitalized

patients only. in an effort to preserve not only tests, but also protective equipment for doctors. >> new york's governor says his state is working to slow the rate at which the virus is spreading. >> we have 53,000 hospital beds available. right now, the curve suggests we could need 110,000 hospital beds. and that is an obvious problem. >> reporter: zachary keish, abc news, new york. rand paul of kentucky has become the first u.s. senator to test positive for covid-19. his staff says he is not showing symptoms but was tested after travel and events and he is not aware of any direct contact with any infected person. two house members, mario diaz hn b alart and mcadams tested possible. eric garcetti, admonished those who crowded parks and beaches and in relation of social distancing standards. in malibu, locals there said it

looked like spring break. big crowds swarmed the coast and contact volleyball and basketball games broke out and it is time that law enforcement came in and laid down the law in terms of breaking up the crowds. >> it's wrong. look at florida and texas and other state, the governor of florida was completely oblivious of what was going on. >> the mayor has said he ordered the parks to be closed and malibu closed parking lots and called on visitors to socially distance themselves. canada's olympic committee says it won't send athletes to the tokyo summer olympics and urging a one year postponement. the international olympic committee is considering several options and plans to make a final decision over the next four weeks am japan's prime minister says postponing the games would be unavoidable if they can't be held in a complete way. officials have ruled out the possibility of a cancellation. anheuser-busch is joining a

silicon valley based cisco is committing $225 million to fight coronavirus. the telecommunications and networking giant says the donation will be $8 million in cash and $210 million in products for the global response, providing help to governments and businesses to provide technology for covid-19 related campaigns. bay area has donated 250,000 dollars, bayer has donated $250,000 to the pharmaceutical relief fund, it is the city's largest private employer for berkeley. the berkeley relief fund supports those who have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. you can contribute to the fund. go to berkeley relief fund.org. well, hundreds of thousands of bay area students refer free and reduced price meals at schools, with those schools

closed many districts are stepping in to make sure the children don't go hungry. abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow has that story. >> reporter: 41% of bay area students are eligible for free or reduced meals, more than 400,000 students who might not eat a meal if they can't go to school. with schools closed for the foreseeable future due to covid-19, many students are stepping up with free grab and go meals. >> anyone under the age of 18 can come to our area of our pickup stations that we have to pick up a free meal. we have a wonderful team of professionals, that work for us, and our school district. and we are providing meals for about 500 kids in our community. >> many of those kids' parents and guardians are driving by to pick up the meals from professionals in protective gear. >> how many children? >> two. >> two? >> i think the meals are very important for families who are short of money and laid off from work. >> it is really helpful during

of concern for customers and staff. the company says it has enacted social distancing rules to protect employees working at its candy factories in los angeles and in south san francisco. the weather put on quite a show this afternoon, and abc 7 news viewer used a drone to capture some pictures, and video of lightning in the south bay. it was part of a pretty decent storm that rolled through this afternoon. it dumped heavy rain as well in the downtown san jose area. if you were north of there, you might have seen something completely different or not seen something. here is frances. >> a lot of areas didn't get any measurable rain at all. but santa rosa surprisingly got quite a bit of rain and thunderstorms as well and san jose, and kind of jumped over the rest of the bay area. as we look at the system on live doppler 7 and the satellite radar image, a it has moved further south, to gilroy and monterey and moving to fresno where you can see the areas of yellow and orange producing some of the heavier rainfall. lows tonight will be in the 40s to near 50. low 40s in the north bay.
