overnight lawmakers on capitol hill finally reaching a deal on that multihad trillion dollar stimulus package to help revive the u.s. economy. >> good news for families all across america. at last, we have a deal. >> reporter: the deal comes after five days of marathon negotiations, democrats wanted the plan to do more for workers and were pushing for a marshal plan for hospitals. >> to all americans i say, help is on the pren reveals he wantss of the economy to reopen by easter. >> easter is our timeline. what a great timeline that would be. >> reporter: according to morgan stanley, 3.4 million people filed for unemployment last week. that's nearly five times more than the highest week ever. but health care experts warn the country is no where near ready. >> no one is going to want to tone down things when you see what's going on in a place like new york city. i mean, that's just, you know, good public health practice and common sense. >> reporter: senate majority

leader mitch mcconnell is expected some time today and treasury secretary steve mnuchin says the president will absolutely sign this deal. abc news, washington. now to an update on the growing number of coronavirus cases in the bay area. the number of total confirmed cases has now topped 1,000. santa clara continues to get hit hard. it reported 16 deaths and 375 cases which is more than double san mateo counties which is 161. alameda county reported a second death today. and 135 confirmd cases. contra costa county reports 186 cases san francisco has its first death, the man is in his 40 and he had significant underlying health conditions. 152 confirmed cases in coronavirus in san francisco. two confired cases of coronavirus in mendicino county.

lake county still reporting no cases. stanford university officials say they are aware of 24 people connected with the university who tested positive for covid-19. one is a student now on campus and the other are either faculty, staff, students residing in the bay area and beyond. meanwhile, the palo alto weekly says they're setting up for large-scale testing of patients with coronavirus symptoms. they're putting up tents on campus at its galvez street parking lot. the new tents are expected to start being used in the next few days. jobina. >> thauk, kumasi. new details about a southern california teenager who died th. los angeles kounchty health officials say the teen was infected it is possible something else caused his death. the 17-year-old was originally thought to be the first child to

die of the pandemic in the united states. further tests are needed to determine the official cause of death. the boy's father is still in the hospital being treated for coronavirus. governor newsom was asked about the possibility of california reopening in a few weeks. the state currently has a stay at home order for tens of millions of people. >> i think california would be sooner than any of the other experts i talk to would believe is possible. >> newsom said it is possible the stay at home order could last up to 12 weeks as the state tries to bend the curve. two san francisco supervisors are proposing a resolution that would call on governor newsom and president trump to determine a resolution on rent and mortgage payments. they realize that people are struggling financially. >> the thing they fear the most is what they're going to do when their rent's due and mortgage is due and their bills are due. we have to stand up and make

sure that every single one resir backs. >> san francisco is one of several cities that has halted evictions because of the pandemic. in addition to san francisco, other communities are putting in a delay on evictions because of a coronavirus pandemic. hayward city council approved a 90 day moratorium and passed an ordinance today that is effective immediately. the marin county board of supervisors is preventing businesses from being affected. more hel to people and businesses in san mateo county. the board of supervisors approved $3 million in emergency funding to start the san mateo strong fund. the fund is to self employ people who can't qualify for employment benefits and also there to help prevent small businesses from laying off workers. the california national guard is pitching in to help in the south bay. 80 members were at second

harvest of silicon valley to help sort food to go to families in need. >> we joined in order to support our communities in this way. specifically in situations like this. >> we're here on a humanitarian aid business and we're not here to help out. >> we're all here for the same reason and here to do the same task at hand. we really focus together and try to get everything done the best way we can. >> the food bank says it typically has 100 volunteers a day and that number has been cut in half in the last week. this morning, we're learning more about a woman who says she was attacked in the south bay after asking for social distance. she says it happened at a trail at communication's hill in san jose. that's where julian glover joins with more on this story, julian? >> good morning, kumasi. she was just running on a trail here as you mention here at communication hill when she said she was attacked by at least two people and hit and coughed on and all she did was ask for a little bit more space trying to

observe social distance. the victim writing about her experience on the nextdoor app and posting a video and said it started when a teen ran up behind her and then next to her. she asked him for more space and the teen tripped her and minutes later came back with two adults and a man coughed on her several times and hit her with his hat and a woman slapped her on the back of the head. san jose prese confirm officers were called out on saturday evening just before 7:30. >> everybody should do their bit in maintaining the distance. if somebody is not, it is okay to tell them to. >> that could be deadly in a worse-case scenario. setting a bad example for kids. >> that was the reaction from other runners on the trail. the suspects ran away before police got there. they have not been identified or tracked down by police. the woman saying she believes it was a family. now for the victim she did not have serious injuries and did not have to go to the hospital but now afraid to go running on

morning. here's a look at our strongest storm moving across the peninsula. it will move across the san mateo bridge as it is right now heading over to hayward and about five or six minutes. fremont, livermoe and your immediate neighbors like newark and also sonal will get wet over the next 45 minutes or so. here's a look at the bay bridge toll plaza and everybody driving through without stopping and getting around today, caution no matter how you're trying to do it because of the wet weather that is possible. 37 in the north bay at 7:00. 43 at 9:00. mid-50s this afternoon. notice the showers not as wide spread today as they were yesterday, however, they are going to be a little more intense with thunderstorms possible. we're in the 40s through 9:00 and mid-40s in the east bay in the afternoon hours and then as we look at san francisco upper 40s through 9:00 and then hang out around 54 as we head into the afternoon hours. >> thank you, mike. good morning, everyone.

taper as we lose the sunshine as we head up into the 7:00 hour. you can see random showers all across the state today. high elevation snows, 50s and 60s in the lower elevations and 30s and 40s and still a winter weather advisory up in the mountains until 11:00. another one to eight inches of snow possible as we head throughout the morning hours. so, if we need to be a little careful if you have to travel up in that way, you'll find some slippery conditions. my accuweather seven-day forecast for tahoe light snow today and thursday and this weekend. a part of social distancing is staying away from people. it makes sense that the way we live right now for the most part is seriously impacting ride hailing services. cars.com pulled more than 3,000 people to see what covid-19 is doing to their transportation and they're using ride hailing services less often while 93% of people say they're using

personal vehicles more. nearly 20% of those surveyed who didn't already own personal vehicles claim they were considering buying one. overwhstem fmeopleot o people's cars. >> that's real. i guess. >> i fit into that category. so, the deadline for getting a real i.d. compliant driver's license is being pushed back because of coronavirus. president trump made the decision because of the need for social distancing and to avoid crowding at dmv offices around the country. the original deadline was supposed to be october 1st. the president didn't specify what the new deadline might be. thousands of people in the bay area are out of work as a result of covid-19 and not surprisingly the california unemployment development has seen a huge spike in claims this month. as the department attempts to keep up, some requirements have been waived to help those who need it the most. abc 7 news reporter melody

woodrow has the story. >> reporter: spending even more time with her daughter marley since covid-19. she's a catering director for a french restaurant, but of work since the start of last week. for the first time in her nearly 20-year career, corbela applied for unemployment insurance. if approved, the maximum benefit an applicant can receive is $450 a week. >> it really will only take care of some supplementary bills but not come close to covering rent. >> reporter: one of thousands of californians who applied for unemployment insurance benefits this month according to california eed spokesperson loree levy. >> these are unprecedented times. >> reporter: the number of californians applying for unemployment insurance increased 34% from the first week in march to the second week in march. californians also filed 42% more

quiet right now. we have some showers out there this morning and scattered showers this afternoon but before we get to that, off to a cooler start. watch out for the fog if you have to be out and about. today's storm is a one and spring warmth is coming next week. for today, we have a one. you can see a few showers moving through ma, arin county and the peninsula and about to enter the east bay. those are our biggest players right now. here's a look at what is going on as far as future radar. you can see as we head throughout the day, the best chance is actually going to be over the ocean and over our higher terrain. that's where we'll find the biggest discontinuity that will create the energy needed and the buoyancy for the thunderstorms to develop. as we lose the sunshine we lose the thunderstorms. tomorrow morning wake up with a clear sky and even colder than this morning with temperatures in the mid 30s to low 40s. in many neighborhoods the showers over the coast and look what happens when we get the

here's a look at the stronger storm and you could see some hail and some red. that will head to cupertino around 5:11 and the southern part of the santa clara valley during that time frame. a heavier shower over the san mateo bridge and just now making it to the eastern side which we could see with our tower cam right here. >> thanks, mike. kaiser kermaente will not build its high rise in oakland after all. it was set to be near 22nd street and it blames the move on delays and increasing costs. the plans to cancel the project is not related to covid-19.

oakland's largest private employer with 7,200 workers. kaiser plans to stay in its existing offices at seven east bay locations. one result of the coronavirus pandemic is the bay area has lighter traffic and lower gas prices. crude oil prices have dropped to levels not seen since 2002. aaa says gas prices have dropped 14 cents in the past seven days in california. now, san francisco's average is $3.29 and in oakland it is $3.21. san jose drivers are paying $3.13. check this out, this is gas for $2.99 in oakland at the chevron on lake shore avenue. >> we want to share with you a few moments from a garage concert and maybe you can dance while social distancing just like these people in sonoma county did. ♪
