expanded for freelance and gig workers. >> and there could be another stimulus bill to address future economic impact. a grim new milestone tonight, the coronavirus death toll in the united states has now surpassed 1,000. empty streets likely as seen we'll have to get used to after bold words from the governor. >> the stay-at-home orders are real and don't think for a second we're a day or two away from lifting that order. we're not. we're not even a week or two away. >> stark numbers from the governor on testing in the state, 67,000 have been given with nearly 49,000 results still pending. >> we have to make that, we will need about 5,000 more hospital beds on top of what we already have. >> that dire prediction from san francisco's mayor,he s to t gerr and lin out san francisco's need. one certainly, school will be cancelled longer than first thought. most districts here in the bay area will remain closed through may 1st.

>> i miss seeing my teachers. i miss seeing everything i was doing at school. marin, napa, and sonoma counties reported new coronavirus cases tonight. five people died. four cases are in san mateo county. santa clara county also reports another deadly infection with 17 deaths. there are now a total of 1,208 cases in the bay area. there are two confirmed cases in mend see know county. the most recent case is related to high-risk travel and the person is isolated at home. lake county isn't reporting any cases. here is a stunning figure. nearly half of the figures at the san jose kaiser hospital have tested positive for covid-19 or suspected of being infected with it. >> sky 7 was over that hospital today. kaiser's vice president who is also an infectious disease expert says the hospital has

increased staffing and revamped the 242-bed hospital. >> we have to repurpose another unit to take care of regular icu patients as well. >> in a statement tonight, kaiser vice president irene chavez says the number of covid-19 patients is currently lower. chavez says given that it is located in a covid-19 hot spot and that we count so many south bay residents as our members, it should not be surprising that we would care for a significant number of our patients in our san jose hospital. san francisco's hospital is under a lockdown tonight after three employees tested positive for coronavirus. it is a city-run nursing home now. most of the 750 residents are over 65 with serious health conditions. seton medical center is now accepting covid-19 patients.

governor newsom announced the state would be leasing more than 200 hospital beds at the facility. california has 90,000 hospital beds. governor newsom says he expects the state will need 50,000 more. new pressure for students, parents, and teachers. school districts in six counties announced they will remain closed until may 4th. abc news reports with now this is going to affect families. lauren. >> dan, there's a lot of stress. students are worried they're going to miss out on graduations. parents are now having to work and teach. tonight i spoke with an online teaching expert that says you need to get organized and don't be too hard on yourself. >> no one to help me at home or my mom's working. it's not the same before. >> this eighth grader is trying to adjust to online learning while helping her two younger siblings with their homework. >> it's stressful because i've

been helping around, helping with work. >> with school closed until may 4th, there's a big chance her eighth grade graduation won't happen. >> i'm really upset because i wanted to graduate. i wanted to go to school. i want to keep learning. >> her mom is also feeling pressure having all three children home. >> she doesn't really know what to do and she just coming home from work stressed, helps my brother with homework, help me, help me sister. >> karen gardner recommends both parents and students create a space for each person. >> if you can set up a workstation for each person and have it be as far apart as possible, use head phonos -- >> and getting organized goes a long way. >> there was an incident where a calculator went missing and it was under a pile of things. i said we need to remove these piles. >> gardner says given the opportunity, students will catch up. it's parents that will take more

video of that violent confrontation. today i spoke with the victim who describes her request for distance and the tense moments that followed. >> get away! oh, my god! >> deliberate cough, audible contact. this video shows a small part of saturday's attack on communication's hill in san jose. speaking anonymously, the victim spoke her story. she admits she could have used better words to communicate. >> i yell out, watch your distance, stay six feet away. do you not understand what's happening. he mouthed what are you going to do and started laughing and looked at me. and i was like okay [ bleep ], so i did say that. >> he returned minutes later with a group of people. >> that's when he grabbed his beanie of his head, start to spit on me, coughed on me multiple times. i had my phone. this happened for a good minute and i only caught about six seconds of it on camera. >> i would applaud her.

>> other neighbors agree that crowds on communications hill can be an issue. >> a lot of people don't take this serious and to me it's a -- that's how it's spread. >> the neighbor who only wants to be identified as mike says he can recall a few times he should have spoken up for his own safety. saturday's victim hasn't started using the trail and found herself in another heated exchange wednesday. >> six feet. >> that's stupid. >> he moved around and i moved around and i saw them again. she started flipping me off and i caught her on film and put her on video. >> still nothing compared to saturday's confrontation, one that involved and happened in front of teens. >> i'll recover from it. i'm okay. i'm not suffering from it. but your children are seeing how you behave. and that's the most important thing right now. >> the victim says she'd apologize for calling the teen an expletive, but says that doesn't warrant an attack. now, police say the suspects got away and have not yet been

a gate agent at the airport tested positive for coronavirus. he last worked march 22nd in terminal 2. all the areas he worked are being disinfected. a southwest w southwest w southw team and said they're all worried about the sick employee. the economic stress from the coronavirus is growing by the hour. and in an effort to reassure its employees, bay area sales force will not conduct any major lay offs over the next 90 days. when we got word of the decision, i asked about the decision. he's sheltering at home in san francisco. >> we're definitely in the m middle of a huge crisis right now, dan. everybody knows that. and one thing we don't want our employees worried about is their jobs. so, we've told them for the next 90 days they can be assured we're not having any major lay

offs. they're hearing about other ceos making different types of decisions and we wanted to let them know their jobs are safe and to stay focused on what they're doing every day. >> mark adds he is urging other companies to do the same. >> the san jose police department is pitching in to help. they discovered a surplus of masks during inventory check. eddie garcia had his officers deliver about 48,000 masks to all 5 san jose hospitals. >> and this tangled nasty mess is actually disinfectant wipes, baby wipes, paper towels, similar products people flushed down their toilets. the city posted this picture to show how it can cause back a san francisco building has decided to raise their voices to show their unity. j.r. stone has the story. ♪

faf arers around the world have begun immolating a san francisco family photographer who is framing her photos in a whole new way because of social distancing. abc 7 news reporter kate larson caught up with her today on one of her window shoots. >> reporter: this woman is a san francisco photographer. she specializes in fine art family and newborn photos but the coronavirus has inspired her to switch up her style. in order to shoot at a safe social distance, she started photographing families through their windows. >> closer to the okay. nice. nice. project a week ago and has scheduled the events all for free. >> i hope it reminds you of the times that it was bad but more about the times that you were never closer with your family at home. we've never been closer than right now. it's very tough and challenging,
