many south bay residents as our members it would be not be surprising that we care for a significant number of our patients and that being said by irene chavez. now, the hospital does not provide daily numbers but their workload is significant. doctors telling a medical journal just lack week, last thursday that they are worried or concerned about the potential to run out of those all-important ventilators. live in san jose this morning, i'm julian glover, abc 7 news. san francisco laguna honda hospital is under lockdown after three employees there tested positive for coronavirus. most of the 750 residents are over 65 and have serious health conditions. at oakland international airport a gate agent has tested positive for coronavirus. the airport says he last worked on march 22nd in terminal two.

the areas where he worked are now being disinfected. a southwest worker at the airport contacted dan nows and shared these pictures with us. that person says that the airport employees are pretty worried about the sick agent and anyone who worked with him. the airport has given no further information about the man. the number of coronavirus cases keeps increasing with more test results being completed. there are now a total of 1,206 in the bay area and 27 people have died. marin, napa and sonoma county reported more cases and five more people died in the bay area yesterday. four of those people who died are in san mateo county which has a total of five deaths. santa clara also reported another deadly infection. two confirmed cases in mendicino cases and related to high-risk travel and the person is now isolated at home. lake county is still not reporting any cases. konsh is moving moving

forward with the $2 trillion relief deal. abc news ines de la cuetaracuett more on the people who are suffering during this pandemic. >> reporter: after five days of tough negotiations between the senate and the white house over the largest economic relief bill in modern u.s. history today the vote was unanimous. overnight the senate unanimously passing the stimulus bill meant to help the economy recover from the covid-19 outbreak. >> the aye are 96 and the 60 vote threshold being achieved, the bill is passed. >> reporter: as part of that bill, the government will send people earning $75,000 or less a 1,200 check plus 500 per child. those earning up to $99,000 a year will get a smaller check. checks will go out on april 6th. it could take four or five weeks

to reach those who will get it by mail and those that get direct deposit could get it sooner. also money in the bill to help states and hospitals. but there is one sliver of hope. extreme social distancing measures may be working. the rate of hospitalizations slowing slightly in new york city. >> this is a very good sign and a positive sign. again, i'm not 100% sure it holds. >> reporter: today new guidance will be released by the center for disease controls which parks which had seen popular could be a breeding ground for the virus. at the live desk, i'm tracking how the bay area could see a number of benefits from the stimulus including $1.3 billion to help b.a.r.t. and other transit agencies. $240 million for sfo where most domestic and international flights have been canceled and $11 million for san francisco to

help homeless people who are vulnerable to the pandemic. the bill also contains extended unememployment benefits. and there could be another stimulus bill to address future economic impact. we will wait and see on that, kumasi, back to you. >> thank you. most bay area counties have decided to extend the current school closures through may 1st. it's been 11 days since most of them shut down to stop the spread of coronavirus. in oakland that means the district's 50,000 students will continue to stay home with their families. san francisco officials announced the same length closure for the city's 57,000 public school students. closed schools are a challenge for students in some districts and more affluent areas a high percentage of students have access to wi-fi and computers and laptops at the house. but in places like oakland, a lot of students do not. governor newsom is making it clear young people should not treat school closures like they are on summer vacation. >> understand physical

distancing more than they understand social distancing. for the younger folks out there, physically separate from others and strangers. don't mix. we can bend the curve. we can defeat this virus. let's meet this moment. let's follow through. >> governor newsom says so far 51% of confirmed patients in the state are between the ages of 18 and 49. at least 37 of the more than 2,500 cases were under the age of 17. he says social distancing measures could last until mid-june. a third bay area transit agency is temporarily waiving fares all in the name of safety. samtrans are asking to board through the rear doors since they are farther away from the driver. you don't have to pay. ac transit went fare free for the same reason. in the south bay vta took the same lakz last week. we just learned that vta stopped

all light rail service until further notice until a train operator tested positive for covid-19. officials said all vta operators are being told to isolate themselves until they can get a test. all trains will be thoroughly cleaned before being put in service. we'll let you know when we hear back from them. coronavirus or not, firefighters are still risking their safety to do their jobs. coming up next, the battle they faced in the south bay. and a group of neighbors in san francisco joined forces to create some good out of these challenging times. two opera singers leading the way. i like to hear that. >> yes. >> i know. so, we have to wait for that. in the meantime, we can look at our gorgeous city and chat with mike a little bit about what the weather is going to be like. good morning, mike. >> i could only sing, kumasi, i would do that when i got home.

but nobody wants that. that is one of them, unfortunately. hi, everybody. a look at what's going on. cooler weather if you have to step outside this morning. castro valley, fremont 38 and san leandro 37 and everyone else around 40 to 41 and alameda 44 degrees. here's a look at emeryville you can see the traffic coming to us from the north and the commute planner for those that have to, pop-up showers today. so widespread that it doesn't really merit a storm impact scale. and fewer showers if you are on the bay. we do have a little bit of fog up around napa right now. we'll keep an eye on that and wind currents would suggest that some of that may slip south as we head through the morning. let's take a look at some of our neighborhoods. you'll definitely need the sunglasses today. it is still going to be cooler than average. 41 at 7:00, 46 at 9:00 and 58 at about 3:00. the south bay one of those areas

that would be more likely to have a thunderstorm from one of these pop-up showers. east bay not so much. we start off at 39 and at 9:0045 and then upper 50s with a few clouds developing as we head into the afternoon hours and then let's take a look at what's going on for our peninsula. we're in the 40s through at least 9:00 with sunny conditions, a few clouds and 58. now, on the coast side of the peninsula, that's another area where we have some showers right now and showers could linger this afternoon and i'll show you those coming up next with live doppler 7. first, hi, jobina, good morning. >> good morning to you. my friend. good morning, everyone. so, good news on our roads for the most part no major issues. i do want to let people know if you are coming up from the east bay into san francisco this morning, there is a high wind advisory for the bay bridge that the chp issued. still in effect from the dumbarton bridge has been canceled. no cash lanes at the toll plaza. i still see people slowing down

forecast. >> here is a look at our planner for today. 30s taking over most narbtdz by the time we get to f sweon and m upper 50s and those showers tapering by 7:00. you can see the random nature of the lower elevation showers and higher elevation snow today. 61 in sacramento and l.a. 63 and 40 in yosemite and we have a chance of snow this weekend and it will not be a lot of snow in the sierra and like the last couple weekends and the couple inches of fresh powder is possible and it won't add more to the snow pack and it will keep it from dwindling and once we get past that mild temperatures in the mid-50s. in the south bay san jose firefighters are trying to figure out what caused a three alarm fire near stoke street. you can see can the flames and smoke coming from the mall and

took firefighters about an hour to knock it down. it appears no one was inside and no injuries. more warning from san francisco officials to continue to stay at home to slow the spread of coronavirus. mayor breed has sent letters to governor newsom and vice president pence asking for more personal protective equipment, more ventilators and hospital beds. >> we estimate that we will need more. it's not even a question as to whether or not we'll need more. >> the city says it needs 5,000 more beds and at least 1,500 more ventilators and plan to open a new floor for just coronavirus virus at st. francis memorial hospital. all right. take a look at this. it's a tangled mess, but it is actually disinfectant wipes, baby wipes, bapaper towels and things like that all flushed down the toilet in the peninsula posted this photo on how they can really clog the sewer system

my neighbor's got skills, who knew. that's a good surprise. in a few hours warrior superstar stephen curry is hosting an open and talking with coronavirus task force member dr. anthony fauci on curry's instagram. director of allergy and infecktuous infe infectious diseases and advised presidents. you can ask questions. the interactive experience starts at 10:00 a.m. on curry's instagram. i cannot wait for this because i'm a fan of both of them, so, i'm interested to see how the conversation is going to go and i like that it's interactive and i think it really will appeal to just a different, broader audience than what we see every day when he's doing these white house briefings. >> that's exactly what i thought when i saw it also, kumasi.

chance of a thunderstorm today. you could see it starting from about the marin headlands heading over to about livermore and southmo. watch the sun bubble up a few showers and thunderstorms to the south and over lake county where it will be cold enough that it will dust some snow. the storms more south to south this afternoon and then northwest to southeast we're seeing this morning. but notice they don't cover a lot of areas and by 8:00 they're gone and then increasing clouds as the next storm draws near but tomorrow will be dry. let's see the potential for rain, if you get caught under one of these. you can see a couple hundredths of an inch. we don't get near tenth of an inch until san jose. here's a look at my accuweather seven-day forecast. still below average tomorrow even without the threat of rain. al cooler weather back into the 50s saturday and not all-day

exciting week for restaurants in the bay area and around the country. we are supposed to find out the finalist for james beard awards but they have postponed the awards because of the pandemic. a prior james beard award winning chef in washington, d.c., said he had been forced to close and lay people off. >> laying off 60 plus employees, i don't think i've cried more in an entire day in my entire life. so, you know, there's direct challenge challenges i face every day when i wake up like how are they going to pay their rent. >> the james beard foundation calls the situation that the restaurants are facing dire. a bay area nonprofit which normally helps developing countries is switching its focus to fight coronavirus here. $1 for life builds school houses in third world countries but starting to use donations to sew makeshift sanitary masks that

you see him wearing. some will go to the kids in napal but also a lot sent right here. why they might not be as safe as the n95 masks they could be rewashed and have you protection. abc 7 news was on the scene at seventh street right near the brooklyn marina yesterday. crews were out quickly and repaired the broken water line. it's just a reminder that you always have to be prepared. >> east bay is very reliable. our water will keep flowing no matter what, but yet emergencies even small ones like this and you have a main breaker and you might be out of water for a few hours. >> east bay mud said 70 people were affected. >> those poor people. just another layer of stress
