ventilator and it may be answered. this morning as the u.s. deals with the most cases of coronavirus worldwide, president trump now says he's ordering general motors to manufacture those much needed ventilators moving forward with the defense production act. >> we will not hesitate to use the full authority of the federal government. >> reporter: in new york where cases have soared past 44,000, governor andrew cuomo says he needs more ventilators now. cuomo touring fema's new field hospital in manhattan, 1,000 new beds available here when it opens monday. but the governor warns it might not be enough. the virus hitting new york city's first responders. the nypd reporting its second death with more than 500 members of the force sick with covid-19. throughout the country, other states on high alert. in detroit, michigan, the chief of police testing positive for the virus. big concerns in illinois as well. plans now under way for the army corps of engineers to convert

okay, so it is time for "pop news," and we begin with the superstar who is known to give the color red the blues. bruno mars is joining the long list of celebrities generously donating to the fight against coronavirus. the grammy award winner announcing that he's donated a whopping $1 million to the mgm resorts foundation to support employees and their families impacted by the pandemic. mars has performed a number of shows at the park theater at park mgm in las vegas. a representative for him says that he wanted to show his appreciation to the amazing employees who help make these shows possible and that we will all be out of this situation and having fun together again very soon. also making a generous donation, angelina jolie, she is also giving $1 million to no kid hungry which aims to end child hunger in america. jolie saying in a statement, many children depend on the care and nutrition they receive during school hours including nearly 22 million children in

america who rely on food support. no kid hungry is making resolute efforts to reach as many of those children as possible. so, so great to see so many celebrities stepping up and helping out in this time of need. okay. so we've been talking about how families are coming together and the fun things that they're doing during this time. here are two parents who made sure that their son jax's 21st birthday party was still a huge party even while social distancing. check it out. dad was the bouncer for club quarantine. jax's sister emily shared this moment on tiktok. that video getting nearly 5 million views, and mom is behind the bar making drinks for everyone. diy birthdays are becoming a thing while everyone is at home. this family put on a pub crawl in their house for one sister's 22nd birthday party and another family doing a red carpet walk on their way to dinner. you got to get creative. whit, you've got another great story for us.

home in kentucky. thank you so much for joining us. let's get right to it, dan. we're told that you were a bit reluctant to do this at first. the video evidence tells a very difft story. why, though, the initial hesitation? >> well, normally -- i love doing tiktok videos with these guys all the time. but in this case this tiktok, we wanted to create a story where it looked like i was reluctant because on tiktok there's a lot of great dancers right now, and they have good moves, and i was like very reluctant, but these guys came up with the storyline to make it look like i was reluctant and became the hero in the end, so it was actually a lot of fun for us to do that. >> you're our hero. that's for sure. collin, i want to turn to you for a moment. we mentioned that this video has been viewed millions and millions of times. you direct and edit these clips. how does it feel to know you're delivering so much joy to people out there who truly need it right now? >> it's the most amazing feeling

in the world just knowing that people have seen this that many times but then seeing the comments roll through saying i'm doing this with my mom, my dad and seeing them doing it with their grandparents especially right now during the time of quarantine when families are together. you can do this. everybody can have fun together and this guy actually won a disco competition in 1979. understand, about pregnant women with covid-19 and possible transmission to their newborns. can you tell us more about this? >> yeah. very small studies just published in "jama." they looked at three newborns born via c-section to moms who had covid-19 and recovered and found evidence of antibodies in those babies. the babies were well. they were not sick. so it definitely needs more research. we have to underscore this. but, again, there may be a suggestion that these antibodies or the infection can be passed in utero, so that's being looked at. >> that's concerning. we've also been hearing about pregnant women being admitted for labor or delivery and not being allowed to bring their support person. what is going on here? >> this is such a big deal, dan. you know, in the united states childbirth is the number one reason for admission to a hospital. there are 4 million births in this country every year, and we

know that having a continuous support person improves labor and delivery outcomes for a mother. but we're seeing in new york city some aggressive and very precautionary action taken on the part of some major hospitals preventing any support person from being in the delivery room with that mother. so, again, risk/benefit. they're trying to curtail their exposure to covid-19 in the hospital. but there are some risks to that physically and psychologically to that woman in labor. >> we only have a few seconds here, but do you have other tips for pregnant women in the midst of this pandemic? >> yeah, just quickly, we don't want pregnant women skipping prenatal care. we know that that's really important, so you want to talk to your obstetrician or midwife about ways to do that, and get a copy of your prenatal chart just in case you may need to deliver at another hospital. >> dr. ashton, really appreciate it. thank you so much. let's switch gears and get it over to rob for the weather. hey, rob. >> good morning, again, guys. it was a beautiful day yesterday

now to something we could all use a little bit more of, sanity at this time, especially in our homes. our stephanie ramos is back with some free tips for parents. ♪ >> reporter: when home suddenly turns into work and school, some chaos is inevitable, but fear not, sanity is in sight. >> with an hour or less of planning, parents can bring back some of the sanity into their home with a few simple free tips. >> we asked the gainer family, a 9-year-old, 6-year-old and a 3-year-old to give them a whirl. tip number one, create a dedicated workspace. >> one of the things i've done that has been super helpful for the kids is to create a dedicated workspace which is now our dining room table. when the kids are seated, they know it's school time and it's

time to pay attention. >> reporter: tip number two, set a schedule. mom marian made a detailed plan for her kids to follow. >> we have it broken down into academic time, creative time, even snack, lunch, dinner time and most importantly chores. >> reporter: number three, use a timer as your own school bell. >> one of the things i do each day is reading for 30 minutes and set a timer on my watch. four, expand your definition of learning, use this time to teach kids important life skills like loading the dishwasher or taking out the trash. above all, remember to cut yourself some slack. >> so many parents are so nervous about having this time at home when they're working and homeschooling their children, but this is an opportunity we won't likely ever have again, so slow down, do what you can and be gentle with yourself. >> reporter: that is right. don't stress yourself out. embrace this time with your kids this time at home and maybe do some of the things you never really had time for but from home. guys? >> i think there's some really interesting points.

the glass hotel, the second one is a good neighborhood, a novel by teresa ann fowler, it's a tragedy, surrounding a love story involving two young people in an interracial relationship in the south, they've got powerful parents, a lot of opinionated people that weigh in, strong personalities that clash. this is a sink your teeth into it type of read. but caution, it's going to hit you emotionally. it is a tragedy, but a good neighborhood and the glass hotel, those are two recommendations. >> great, great, a lot of reading to be done while in quarantine, that's for sure. quickly transition, two buzz as i new albums came out, give us the scoop. >> five second of summer, a new album called calm, several tracks have been released from this album over the past few months, they've been building up to this. their single hit the number one on the billboard charts. it's a good modern rock anthem that you can just crank up, and get pumped doing whatever you're doing. i usually play it when i'm

♪ you got that yummy all right, time the tricks you need at the supermarket entering another week of social distancing. we're all still trying to get used to it. you're probably running out of goods from your last supermarket run. so when you are restocking this weekend we've got the grocery game plan that you need and joining us to break it all down from her home in brooklyn, dietitian and nutritionist maya feller. maya, good morning to you. all right, let's jump right to it. >> good morning. >> you've got some key tricks to making the most of those store shelves that have already been basically picked over. let's start in the produce aisle. what should we get there? >> absolutely, so the first thing i'm going to suggest is to take a look at the citrus. there's tons of gorgeous citrus out there. we have lemons, limes, we have grapefruits, pomellos, great source of vitamin c. anti oxidant rich.

i suggest potatoes, all types. we have regular potatoes and also sweet potatoes. winter squash as well, between these you'll have vitamin c, potassium as well as b vitamins, all very nutrient rich and have a great shelf life. >> love those ideas there and also you have a tip to really boost the flavor in your food. >> that's right. so when you go to the store we're seeing that all the dried spices are sold out. however, when i went shopping there was a ton of fresh spices. so i created a pesto of sorts and what i did was i froze them. i have two different types of cubes here. you can go ahead and put it in an ice cube tray and then you can use it later on as a flavor booster in anything that you want to cook. >> or you can give your kids the worst popsicle ever. >> you never know. someone might like a pesto popsicle. now take us through the center aisles of the store. >> yeah, absolutely. so we're seeing that the rice and pasta is gone.

however, the ancient grains are still around. some of my favorites are hulled barley, incredibly nutrient rich, teff and then also millet. they generally tend to have the full amino acid profile so a great source of protein. the other thing i love to recommend is bouillon. these concentrated stocks and cubes can be used to kind of cook these grains or heighten the taste of vegetables. for people who need to be concerned they can look for the lower sodium option and another thing that's awesome about this, it takes up hardly any shelf space in your kitchen. >> two little comments. first of all we can see your daughter. she is adorable. second -- >> oh, thanks. >> whoever is operating the camera is doing an awesome job. >> that's my husband, vince. >> shoutout to vince. finally in terms of the supermarket, what about the freezer aisle, what should we be grabbing there? >> yes, so frozen pie crusts are fantastic. think of sweet and savory. you can do quiches as well as

pies. another thing that i love is 100% orange juice, really delicious. you can have it frozen but what i actually did was i bought 100% orange juice, it's fantastic. no added sugars, naturally sweet and froze it myself. i put it into cubes. i can use some now and have some for later. >> and everybody is stockpiling frozen veggies. what can we do to make sure everybody is eating those? >> this is not just for kids anymore. i made a grilled cheese sandwich and my daughter is going to go ahead and taste it. i sauteed frozen veggies then literally put cheese on top of it. and melted it and it's actually pretty delicious. >> perfect. we've been marveling at all the different home productions happening. this one is -- this is like "a" plus, the photojournalist, the floor director. >> thank you. >> i think vince and your daughter deserve a check. >> absolutely. check is in the mail. thank you so much, maya.
