now, your health had, your safety, this is abc7 news. the stay-at-home orders are real and they are operational in the state of california in every part of our state. >> that's governor gavin newsom, on the need to stay home on the number of people hospitalized in california has spiked to over a thousand patients. >> the number of bay area cases increased by 140 overnight, with nearly every county reporting new infections.

there's now more than 1800 in the region. it's total has been brought to 25. one of the victims is a young adult, between 21 and 30 years old. and new fatalaties were reported in several counties. the bay area death toll is now at 44. >> we are keeping an eye on cases in mendocin skpmendocin sp to three for mendocino lake county is reporting no confirmed cases. the death toll has climbed to 101 now, that include as noncalifornia resident that passed away in southern california. there's now 4600 cases statewide. 73 are health care workers. >> and governor newsom was

talking about getting life saving medical equipment like ventilator. we are live with details on how a company is stepping up. cornell? >> reporter: yeah, eric, those ventilators in desperate need across the state. companies like bloomenergy here in sunnyvale did not know anything about ventilators and now they do and they are getting them to where they are needed. >> reporter: governor gavin newsom had applause for these workers, bloomenergy has become a pop up assembly line. >> it's all medical grade. >> reporter: the balloons simulate lungs in testing. bloomenergy is working to refurnish hundreds of ventilators in hopes of getting them to hospitals to help treat patients. the number of patients surging. >> just yesterday, icu numbers

went up 105%. overnight. in the state of california. >> the state is secured 4,000 ventilators but may need at least 10,000. and thousands will need new batteries. bloomenergy, which normally produces fuel cells has stepped up to help. >> hopefully what we are doing here is to say, we can do this. a week ago, none of us knew anything about ventilators. >> workers are figuring it out and getting it done. san ho mayor sam lacardo is impressed. >> i'm enheartened from what i've seen from the incredible people behind me, who are working all hours and finding what have creative way they can to make things work. >> in a time of need, i think the only way we can do what we want to do is to understand what the need is. >> governor newsom said that other california companies are pitching in the pandemic.

>> that's the spirit of california, and this moment. take responsibility and take ownership. >> now, some of the refurbished ventilators will go to hospitals in l.a. and others in the bay area. bloomenergy has a plant back east doing the same thing now. nurse was helping treat coronavirus patients here in the bay area, said she is scared that nurses may be spreading the virus. she is urging kaiser permanente to do more to keep patients safe. >> it's scary, because we are not really hearing or getting the leadership that we need from a national level or really at the hospital level. amy is among nurses who recently protested saying they are in dire need of masks and personal protective equipment also known as ppe. >> when we ask for the ppe, we should be able to get the ppe

that we need, rather than get one mask and told you have to make it last for the entire shift and it has to go even if you are taking care of some covid patients and some not covid patients. >> kaiser is allowing nurses to bring their masks to work as long as they are not medical grade. that doesn't provide enough protection from covid-19. >> we could be transmitting it with not having the right ppe, we feel like we are walking around and passing it along to other groups. that is not safe. we can't understand they are so stingy with the ppe, we are told on one hand, yes, yes, we have it, we have it for now, in case the surge gets worse, we need to hold back. >> they are going to discuss the situation with kaiser. >> we would like to have a conversation of how to treat our patients safely. >> they may bring a mask to work. we are providing the staff with

the protective equipment that is aligned with the latest science and guidance from public health authorities. we ask that staff when practical continue to use masks that are not soiled in alignment with cdc recommendations. >> several staff members and a patient have tested positive for covid-19 at thelaguna honda hospital. they are all reportedly in good condition. five of the staff members provide patient care. the hospital is now in the process of testing 175 people. the hospital is a city run nursing home with 766 beds. most of the residents are over the age of 65, with serious health conditions. laguna honda remains under lock down. >> if you have materials you are interested in donating to hospitals. we have information on how you can help on our website. go to abc7 news.com. >> all 23 san matteo county parks are close to help slow the spread of coronavirus. the decision to close the parks came after a surge of visitors last weekend. park rangers said during the past week and a half.

they have seen people violating the shelter in place order. not keeping social distancing. entrance gates will be locked and signs posted at the entrances, the county said that the parks will remain closed until further notice. >> police are issuing citations to people in city parks. the city's public safety department is saying they are moving from an educational approach to pro active enforcement. telling people to stay home unless they are going out for groceries or take-out. even then, only one person per household should go out. it's still okay to take short walks around the neighborhood. >> there were long lines at costco this morning. check it out, this imagine shows the line before the redwood city store opened this morning. customers were lined up from the entrance down the side of the building and to the people have gun li-- people havn

lining up. and if you see a few empty shelves. the flow of goods in to the stores is strong the. >> supervisors warning if the panic buying and grocery hoarding continues, the government may have to tstep in. all stores have to limit panic buying of items like toilet paper and hand sanitizer, if that does not work in a month, they say, they are ready to introduce an ordinance to make it a law. >> if they cannot regulate and it's not working among all stores. we need to see what we can do to implement something county wide. >> the ordinance would limit purchases of some items to just four. he adds that when one bay area county starts a safety campaign. others will be likely to join in. >> b.a.r.t. is taking advantage of lowered ridership to make

to place. we found a venue, and they had a specific date open, so we were like, it looks great. let's do it. and everything really, really worked out seamlessly until i would say the last few weeks. and so, now, we are working on rescheduling. i have been on multiple calls daily with our planner. with our event coordinator to figure out what the solution is. and we are finding a solution. but it's not ideal. and it's a lot of moving parts and i think that everyone so far has been really accommodating and very helpful, just because this is, uncharted territories that we are having to navigate right now and so, everybody just really wants to support one another. i think the plan at the moment is to go forward and find a new date with the same location. get that plan b in action. that's probably the message. get the hand sanitizer and get a plan-b in action.

live doppler 7, it's tracking the showers and you can see, there's a lot of light green. that's light rain. it's all moving on shore. so, pretty much from west to east direction. so, we are going to zoom on in to a couple of places right now where we found the scattered light showers. in the north bay, you can see, in to the east bay, around concord and san ramon, we are finding the light rain and light rain beginning to press over the golden gate bridge in to san francisco. and as we move further to the south. you can see on live doppler 7's street level. you can see the light showers over fremont. scattered around palo alto and light rain falling around half moon bay. the combination, the live look outside, the rain. and also, a lot of people staying home in the last few weeks, our air quality, you notice as you take walks or runs in the day, it's pretty appreciate out there. and the air quality will stay really good the next 24 hours. no matter where you live, from the south bay, to the coast,

that air quality will be in the green. testimony wise, still, we are below average for the time of year. limited sunshine today, we have the rain off and on, kind of a raw feeling out there. 56 in the city right now. the same in san ho, about 59 in oakland, and 55 that current temperature in napa, so on the storm impact scale. tonight and tomorrow, it's a level one light system we have moving through. it's a cold front tonight, that will bring showers, some scattered downpours as well. th best bet of that happening is tomorrow morning. rainfall less than a half an inch in most spots and it's breezy at times. we are not falling too far from where we are right now. the big story, certainly the rain moving through. let's go hour by hour for you. future weather. later on this evening, about 8:30 tonight. isolated showers. a fair amount of cloud cover overhead. watch what happens when we get to sunday morning. 5:00 a.m. sunday morning and another wave of showers moves through. scattered downpours as well and
