increased by 140 overnight. with nearly every county reporting new infections. there are now more than 1800 cases across the region. santa clara county's death toll surged by 5 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 25. one of the victims is a young adult between 21 and 30. new fatalaties were reported. the bay area death toll stands at 44. >> we are keeping our eyes on other counties. mendocino county is bringing the total death -- the total cases three. and lake county is reporting no confirmed cases. the death toll has climbed passed the century mark to 101, including a noncalifornia resident that passed away. there's 4600 cases statewide and 73 of them are healthcare workers that were stricken by

the virus. >> governor newsom was in the bay area, to call on silicone valley tech leaders to help in the pandemic, including when it comes to life saving medical equipment like ventilators. we are live in sunnyvale with details and a company stepping up. cornell? >> reporter: yeah, eric, the ventilators are desperately needed across the state of california. silicone valle is stepping up. here is an example. just a few days ago, companies like bloom energy did not know anything about ventilators and now they do, and they are getting them to where they are needed. govern eor newsom held a round applause for the workers of bloom energy, they have become a pop up assembly line for life saving ventilators. >> it's medical grade lines and oxygen. >> the balloons simulate lungs in testing. bloom energy is working to refurbish hundreds of

ventilators from the state's emergency supply, in hopes of getting them to hospitals to help treat coronavirus mashltpa. >> the icu numbers went up yesterday 105%. overnight. in the state of california. >> the state is secured 4,000 ventilators but may need at least 10,000. and thousands will need new batteries. bloom energy, which normally produces fuel cells has stepped up to help. >> hopefully, what we are doing here is to say, we can do this. a week ago, none of us new anything about ventilators other than what it was being used for. >> the workers are figuring it out and getting it done. san jose mayor is impressed. >> so, enheartened by what i have seen from the incredible people behd me wreorkil urs and creative way they can to make things work. >> in a time of need, i think the only way we can do what we

even really at the hospital level. >> amy scott slovik is among nurses who recently protested saying they are in dire need of masks and personal protective equipment, known as ppe. >> when we ask for the ppe, we should get the ppe that we need, rather than get one mask and told you have to make it last for the entire shift and it has to go for even if you are taking care of some covid patients and not covid patients. >> they say that they have changed their position and now allowing nurses to bring their own masks to work as long as they are not medical grade. that doesn't provide enough protection from covid-19 she said. >> we could be transmitting it with not having the right ppe. we feel like we are walking around and passing it along to other rooms and we can't understand they are so st nimpt gy with the ppe, we are told we have it, we have enough for now. but in case the surge gets worse, we need to hold back. >> nurses say a meeting is set

to discuss the situation. >> we want to take care of our patients and be there, we would like to have a conversation about how to do it safely. >> now, kaiser tells us that nurse may bring their own medical grade protective masks to work. they say in a statement, we are providing our staff with the protective equipment that is aligned with the latest science and guidance from public health authorities. we have asked that certistaff u masks that are not soiled in alignment with cdc recommendations. a patient has tested positive for covid-19. they are all in good condition. five of the staff members provide patient care, and a hospital is now in the process of testing 175 people. the hospital is a city run nurgs home with 766 beds. most of the residents are over 65 with serious health conditions. it's under lock down. >> if you have materials that you are interested in donating to hospitals.

we have information on how you can help on our website. abc7 news.com. >> all 23 san matteo county parks are closed to help slow the spread of the coronavirus. the decision to close the parks came after a surge of visitors last weekend. park rangers say during the past week and a half, they have seen people violating the shelter in place order. cong congragating in groups and not practicing social distancing. signs will be posted at entrances and the entrances locked. >> rohnert park police are issuing citations to people in city parks and those operating nonessential businesses. they are moving to pro active enforcement. telling people to stay home unless they are going out for essentials and that means groceries or take-out. even then, only one person per household should go out. it's okay to take short walks around the neighborhood. >> there were long lines at costco this morning.

check it out, this imagine shows before the store opened. customers here were lined up from the entrance, down the side of the building and through the back. people have begun lining up before 3:00 a.m. and while you may see a few empty shelves, costco ceo said the flow of the goods in the stores is strong. >> meantime, a supervisor is warning that if the panic buying and grocery hoarding continues, government may have to step in. supervisor david canapa talked about an effort to have all stores voluntarily limit panic buying of items like toilet paper and hand sanitizer, but if it does not show results in a month, he is ready to introduce an ordinance to make it the law. if they cannot regulate and it's not working among all stores, then, we need to see what we can do to implement something county wide. >> the ordinance would limit

now, a special look at the new normal of living with a shelter in place in the bay area. here is one person's personal story, alyssa had to postpone her wedding. so we have been engaged for about a year. we got engaged last year this time we were in japan. and we kind of started planning right off the bat and we wanted to have it in the spring and things just fell in to words in terms of planning for the wedding. we found a venue, and they had a specific date open and so we were like, yeah, that looks great, let's just do it and everything really, really worked

out really seamlessly. and so, i would say the last few weeks, and so, now, we are working on rescheduling, i have been on multiple calls daily with our planners, with our event coordinator to figure out what the solution is, and we are finding a solution but it's not ideal. and it's a lot of moving parts. but i think that everyone so far has been really accommodating and very helpful, just because this is uncharted territories that we are having to navigate right now, and so, everyone just wants to support one another. >> i think the plan at the moment is to go forward and just find a new date with the same location. get that plan-b in action. that's probably the message. get the hand sanitizer and get a plan-b in action. >> covid-19 diaries is an abc7 originals limited series. telling the personal stories as the bay area copes with the

light rain over walnut creek. and even around byron, light showers around brentwood, and scattered light showers from pengrove, and santa r-- santa rosa. the showers are scattered in nature with the light moving system. temperatures in the 50s. 55 in the city right now, we are at 54 in san jose, 58 in oakland and 54 in napa and so, on the storm impact scale, it's a level 1 system, we have over the next 24 hours tonight and tomorrow. we will find showers, and some scattered downpours really sunday morning as this cold front is kind of swinging through. less than a half of an inch of rain for most and it will be breezy at times. overnight tonight, we have the cloud cover overhead, insulates and numbers are not dropping. future weather, let's go hour by hour, later this evening, an

isolated shower here or there. a cloudy night ahead had, a humid night as well. watch what happens as we get had in to sunday morning. this is 5:00 a.m. on sunday. see the pops of yellow and orange on the screen in those are the scattered downpours dotting the bay area. that continues even to 8 and 9:00. the first half looks wetter than the second half. as we get in the afternoon, the downpours move out and the showers are more isolated in nature as we head in to sunday evening, we will likely get breaks of sunshine in to our environment. that will help to warm us up more than today. highs on the sunday, pretty much on either side of 60. hitting 60 in oakland, 59 the high in palo alto. the same in san rafel, 55 in halfmoon bay and 60 the high in concord. so, here's the accu weather day seven-day forecast, let's plan the next seven days. tomorrow the rain and downpours will focus in the morning by the afternoon, and the evening, we
