as you wake up, the coronavirus topping 2,000 deaths in the united states, and growing fast. thousands of tests without results in california means unknown infections are lurking. the one bay area company is having something to say about it. new technology bringing hospitals desperately needed supplies. good morning everyone. it's sunday, march 29th. i'm liz kreutz. thanks for joining us. we have much to get to with the latest in the coronavirus outbreak. first as always we want to start with the forecast with some chances of rain we're tracking. here is meteorologist lisa argen. >> hey liz, good morning to you. you're right, this is a level one system. live doppler 7, notice we have some rain that is moving into the north bay, as we go in closer, it's been moving from southwest to northeast, so right now sears point, highway 37, big

ben t should be moving towards napa and american canyon. nor showers, novato, marin wood, westward through san mateo, 280. wet from montera. more showers offshore will continue with that west to east trajectory. today we have the showers, scattered downpours throughout the first half of the day, a quarter to a third of an inch. we're at 54 right now, mild degrees in oakland. 50 in san jose. throughout the day we'll get brighter, we will dry out but to start out through about 1:00 we have the scattered showers, and maybe some heavier downpours at times. near 60 in our warmest locations. liz? >> we'll begin with the rapid spread of covid-19 in the bay area. never night the bay area topping at least 1,800 cases. 46 deaths across the region. almost every bay area county confirmed new cases yesterday. santa clara county recorded five

deaths in a 24-hour span, that is the most in a single day since this outbreak started. we are also keeping an eye on cases for viewers in northern neighboring mendocino and lake counties. mendocino reported its third confirmed case. good news, one of the three has recovered, according to the county public health department. lake county continues to report no confirmed cases. we have heard plenty of the severe medical supply shortages to get health care workers the protective equipment they need to fight this pandemic but this morning an open 3-d printing company is completely changing what it produces. the fathom company usually employs 50 people but now down to four with the sheltering in place, racing to print the much needed medical supplies. as abc 7 news reporter lauren martinez explains though they are hitting a few snags. >> i've never thought i would b rorter:atmmanufacturining can. inthey're verting their effor

sourcing ppupie >> we reached out to our colleagues in china and had them explore potential fda improved manufacturers making ppe to see if we can fulfill the need for our local communities. >> reporter: those chinese vendors are sending thousands of n-95 masks and other supplies to the company but they're running into restrictions. >> they need to pass emergency procedures to approve suppliers because this equipment exists out there. it just simply is not, the dots are not connected between the manufacturers and hospitals currently. >> reporter: peter allen is a program manager for vituity, a physician group that operates 140 emergency rooms in 17 states, 20 in the bay area. >> a hospital in the bay area was down to maybe a day left of masks at their site. fathom had hundreds of masks and handed those off directly to our medical director. >> reporter: they're working

with other 3-d printing companies to design and manufacturer a swab to fulfill the covid-19 test kit shortage. >> how can we use the technology in the time of need to help our country. >> reporter: the program manager from vituity said there are different businesses that have supplies that can keep our front line businesses safe, dental offices, nail salons, construction and paint supply companies sometimes have a stock of masks, gowns and gloves. reporting in the newsroom, lauren martinez, abc 7 news. >> when it comes to the statewide emergency, governor newsom is calling on help for making life-saving equipment. one sunnyvale company is being tapped to make new ventilators, having no knowledge of how to build them a few days ago. cornell bernard tells the story of their switch to the assembly line. >> hello, everybody. good job. [ applause ] >> reporter: governor gavin newsom led a round of applause for these tech workers putting in long hours in what used to be a warehouse for bloomenergy,

just days ago. now become a pop-up assembly line for life saving ventilators. these balloons simulate lungs during testing. bloomenergy is looking to refurbish hundreds of ventilators from the state's supply in hopes of getting them to hospitals to treat coronavirus patients. the number of patientses surging. >> yesterday icu numbers went up 105% overnight in the state of california. >> reporter: the state secured 4,000 ventilators but may need at least 10,000 and thousands will need new batteries. bloomenrgy, which normally produces fuel cells has stepped up to help. >> hopefully what we are doing here is to say we can do this. a week ago none of us knew anything about ventilators other than what it is used for. >> reporter: these workers are figuring it out and getting it done. san jose mayor sam liccardo is impressed by the ingenuity. >> so heartened by what i have

seen from the incredible people behind me, who are working all hours and finding whatever creative way they can to make things work. >> at a time of need, i think the only way we can do what we want to do is to understand what the need is. >> reporter: governor newsom says other california companies are now pitching in during the pandemic. >> that's the spirit of california. that's the spirit of this moment. take responsibility, take ownership. >> reporter: some of the refurbished ventilators will go to l.a., others to hospitals in the bay area. bloomenergy has a manufacturing plant back east. they are now doing the same thing. stanford hospital acting as a consultant for the operation. in sunnyvale, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. many are asking how you can help in this crisis. we have a full running list of what materials you can donate to hospitals and as well as other ways to get involved, all at our website abc7news.com. this morning the city of

hayward is tightening the criteria to get tested for coronavirus. this past week it's running its free testing site open to all to all who show symptoms and now limited to a fever more than 100 degrees as well as other symptoms like cough or shortness of breath. the tests are being conducted at hayward fire station number 7 on huntwood avenue every day besides monday until supplies run out. new this morning, if you've been using instacart for your food or grocery delivery, you may feel some effects tomorrow. workers are planning a nationwide one-day strike as many as 200,000 instacart shoppers are planning to walk off the job, demanding improved equipment, life mask, hazard pay and extended benefits as they work during this pandemic. instacart announced last week it's hiring 300,000 workers to keep up with surge and demand. the company promised changes including extending sick pay for workers and added bonuses. >>on the peninsula, more long lines for people getting groceries themselves. you see long costco lines

in redwood city before they opened yesterday. customers were lined up from the entrance down the side of the building and back and we've also seen lines start up before 3:00 a.m. at one costco in southern california. while you may see a few empty shelves, costco says the flow of goods into the stores is strong. in san mateo county, a supervisor is warning from the panic buying and grocery hoarding continues the government may have to step in. david canepa said the california grocers association are trying to have stores value voluntarily limit panic buying for items like toilet paper and hand sanitizer. if it doesn't show results in a month he's ready to introduce an ordinance to make it law. >> if they cannot regulate and it's not working amongst all stores, then we need to see what we can do to implement something county wide. >> canepa's proposal would limit purchases to four items for certain products. when one bay area county starts a safety campaign, others are likely to join in.

it's not just toilet paper and cleaning supplies people are hoarding. americans are panic buying pet food. recent data shows sales are up more than 50%. amazon and petco are posting strong sales for pet items. the pet supply delivery company chewy is hiring 6,000 workers to keep up with demand. new this morning, what about your morning oj? the value of orange juice is soaring as more people try to cram in more vitamin c to boost their immune system. one top grow we are a florida citrus trade group says he's seen a jump in the past four week. but we should tell you, there is no evidence that vitamin c is directly effective against the coronavirus. it still goes great with breakfast, though. major changes to public transportation tomorrow in the bay area. that you should know about. b.a.r.t. will continue to close early at 9:00 p.m. with ridership down almost 95%, and tomorrow, muni metro and light rail will no longer run. caltrain will run fewer trains going from its normal 92 to 42

trains. since the shelter in place daily ticket sales are down 95%. today's caltrain weekend service stays the same. glide memorial church in san francisco is holding online services today. you can watch it on facebook live, services are every sunday at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. glide says it will do online celebrations until april 30th. several other churches moved to livestreaming and some drive-through confessionals amid the covid-19 pandemic. abc 7 was proud to help people of all faiths in the bay area worship from home last weekend together. today you can do the same, watch an encore presentation of "abc 7 presents: finding faith better together" today at 3:00 p.m. on abc 7. everyone's just trying to adapt, lisa, how however we can. lisa, have you gotten on the zoom band wagon? >> i haven't but my sister is a teacher so she's all about it. i've heard a lot about it. and i have a daughterhas to do that for college so yeah everybody is going to get with it one way or the other

virus around, urging kaiser to keep medical staff safe. something countless other health care workers are calling for across the country. here's abc 7 news anchor eric thomas with more. >> it's been scary. it's been very stressful, because we're not really hearing or getting the leadership that we need from a national leel or even really at the hospitals. >> reporter: amy scott slovik is among nurses who protested saying they're in dire need of masks and personal protective equipment also known as ppe. >> when we ask for ppe we should be able to get the ppe we need rather than one mask and told you have to make it last for the entire shift and even if you're taking care of some covid patients and not covid patients. >> reporter: scott-slok ys kaer cngtsn and allowing nurses to bring their own masks to work, as long as they're not medical grade, but she says that doesn't provide enough protection from covid-19. >> we could be transmitting it

but not even having the right ppe we feel like we're walking around and passing it along to other rooms and that's not safe. we can't understand why they're so stingy with the ppe. we're told on one hand yes, we have enough for now, but in case the surge gets worse, we need to hold back. >> reporter: nurses say a meeting is set for monday to discuss the situation with kaiser. >> we want to take care of our patients. we'd like to have conversation about how to do it safely. >> kaiser permanente tells us nurses can bring their own medical grade productive masks to work, and kaiser says in a statement, "we are providing our staff with the protective equipment that is aligned with the latest science and guidance from public health authorities. we have asked that staff, when practical, continue to use masks that are not soiled, in alignment with cdc recommendations." of course we know health care workers across the country need more ppe. san francisco's ladue in a honda hospital remains under lockdown this morning. seven staff members and a patient just tested positive for covid-19 at the hospital. although reportedly in good

condition, five staff members provide patient care. the city-run hospital is in the process of testing 175 people. most of the residents are over 65 with serious health conditions. new this morning, the home of the seattle seahawks will soon be looking a whole lot different than this. century link field will be transitioning to become a military field hospital for people with medical issues that are not related to the coronavirus. this is to free up bed space in hospitals for covid-19 cases. officials say the facility will be ready in just a few days. in the nba, the detroit pistons are also announc facility to help medical professionals to fight the outbreak. the coronavirus pandemic is forcing many plans to change for residents in the bay area, and that includes couples who had weddings planned. abc 7 news reporter luz pena spoke to two couples affected by the stay at home order and what they plan to do next. >> this is the dress in here, and these are the shoes.

>> reporter: six days prior to their wedding day, seems like meghan duff's wedding dress will stay in her closet for now. >> we're basically in limbo. >> reporter: their civil we had willing at san francisco city hall was canceled after the mandated shelter in place cut into their well-awaited dream date, april 3rd. >> he has his tux and we had our venue to have dinner with our family, and my cousin was going to do our flowers but the flower mart closed, so everything's just on hold. >> reporter: a statewide hold that didn't stop this san francisco couple. kelly and toby castle are newlyweds in the midst of a global pandemic. >> we got married last thursday. we got our marriage license about an hour before they closed city hall to get marriage lances. >> reporter: they decided on the fast wedding, having in mind that toby an australian citizen, was going to have to go back home. >> we gathered about three

people on a tiny little beach in san francisco, and it was wonderful. we were six feet apart, except for when we kissed. >> reporter: in a statement the office of the city administrator said in part "those who wish to reschedule for an in-person ceremony will receive priority appointments to get married at city hall, as soon as it is safe to do so." because in the midst of the uncertainty of this pandemic, what these two couples do have in common is confidence in their love. >> one day, i'm going to have that special moment. >> we knew that we loved each other, and we wanted to spend our life together. that's the most important thing. we'll figure out a party later. >> reporter: luz pena, abc 7 news. >> we're focusing on how life changed in the bay area and helping us get through the time. this morning our new special limited series shows you how one personal trainer's life has shifted.

>> nba2k and call to dury my best friends. helping pass the time. my name is nate berry, i live in bay point. i'm a personal trainer at barry's boot camp san francisco. what i've been doing is on instagram and facebook doing workouts, not even to get paid about to you help people just keep their sanity while at home but at the end of each workout i say, you know, if you can, donate, if you can't, it's fine. i'm still going to keep doing what i'm doing. the support from these people is, it doesn't make sense. like it's unreal the support from, and these people are watching multiple instructors and potentially donating to different instructors throughout the day. so the support from them is just unbelievable, like it's hard to wrap my head around it.

system but by the second half of the day we have some sunshine, drier skies, and that rain decreasing. here is a look at live doppler 7 where you can see the trajectory from southwest to northeast, and taking you in closer to around sears point, highway 37 highway 12, american canyon getting wet soon and novato, highway 1, you've been pretty wet this morning, back towards point reyes, some showers and san francisco, bay view, bay shore and brisbane and toward the san mateo bridge, some scattered light showers, foster city and burlingame. further south into the south bay te scattering of showers, you can see, the santa cruz mountains, that's going to change, look what's offshore. we're seeing more showers beginning to fill on in and this is going to take us through about 1:00 for most of you, and then perhaps lingering higher elevations, mt. diablo, south bay through the middle of the afternoon. it is 51 downtown, 47 in vallejo

and a few from sutro, where we have clouds out there, a little bit of patchy fog. morning scattered downpours and mostly cloudy skies turning partly cloudy later on today. sunny but a cool start to the work week, and we're going to keep temperatures in check pretty much where they should be for this time of year. as we look at the hour by hour forecast, you'll notice that we do have those downpours represented by the yellow here and nice line of them throughout the mid morning hours from santa rosa through the city, and pushing into the santa cruz mountains, then they march across the bay area. 10:30 we're wet in the east bay, getting hung up maybe in the higher elevations, but beginning to clear out with a mix of scattered showers throughout the 1:00/2:00 hour so the unstable air that energy pushing to the east. we've got the heating of the sun, so that's why we're going to get some of the downpours. rain amounts from a quarter inch, maybe a third of an inch. otherwise it's a northern california event. temperatures on the cooler side of average, 56 today in the

the top headlines to know as you wake up this morning, the united states has surpassed at least 2,000 deaths from the coronavirus, nearly doubling in just a few days. of course, all of this expected to climb. tomorrow, muni metro and light rail will no longer run. caltrain will cut service from the normal 92 to 42 trains. b.a.r.t. keeps its new weekday closing time at 9:00 p.m. nationally, vice president pence says this week the coronavirus task force will be making its recommendation to president trump on whether to ease social distancing and reopen the economy. the president's earlier announcement said that the 15-day waiting period would end tomorrow, which defies public health expert opinion. good morning, it's sunday, march 29th. i'm liz kreutz. thanks to all of you just joining us. we have much more to get to on the race against coronavirus but we want to get a look at the weather with lisa argen. >> liz, hey, good morning to you. scattered showers moving in from the coast pushing ac ross the bay area. they've been light so far but we have more offshore, it's a level one system and as we go in closer, the ones in the north

bay moving from the southwest to the northeast. napa wet, highway 12. american canyon will be next and looking at novato, it's been some showers for you, point reyes and down the peninsula, we've had rain from the san mateo bridge through san francisco. you can see over towards hayward and then down in the south bay, not much happening, random shower there in san jose. we are looking at that level one system, that's going to take us through the first half of the day, more showers are offshore there, and those scattered downpours should last through about 1:00. there is a look at the golden gate bridge and temperatures are in the 50s right now. we'll talk about a cool start to the work week, and some brighter skies in a few minutes. liz? >> thanks, lisa. we'll start with a closer look at the covid-19 spread in the area for those of you just joining us. overnight the bay area topping more than at least 1,800 cases. so now 46 deaths across the region. there are more than 4,600 confirmed cases in california almost every bay area county confirmed new cases yesterday.

santa clara county recorded five deaths in a 24-hour span, that is the most in a single day since this outbreak started. up north, mendocino county reported its third confirmed case yesterday, however health officials say one has recovered, so that's good news. lake county is still reporting no confirmed cases. and the rapid spread of the outbreak is forcing president trump to order a travel advisory anyone living in the new york tri-state area. new york state being the hardest struck by covid-19. the president had been considering a full lockdown for anyone in new york, new jersey and connecticut. now the new cdc travel i haves 30 million people are being told to halt in their tracks. president trump's earlier suggestion that these three states could face federal quarantine. and the battle over interstate travel continues with new york governor andrew cuomo threatening to sue the state of

rhode island over its recent policy of targeting and tracking new yorkers coming into the state, and ordering them to self-quarantine. rhode island governor gina raimondo defended the move but also expanded it to all state visitors, no longer singling out new york. this as another prominent new yorker tests positive. james dolan, ceo of madison square garden and owner of the new york knicks, said to have little to no symptoms but remains in self-isolation. tai hernandez, abc news, new york. >> this is in milwaukee the city launched drive-up voting yesterday. voters stay in their car while their i.d. is checked, cast their ballot, hand it off and drive away. the governor of wisconsin is calling for the state to send an absentee ballot to every registered voter. their primary is next tuesday. coming up on "this week" white house national economic council director larry kudlow discusses the latest on the covid-19 threat and the

government's response, watch that full interview on "this week with george stephanopolous" here on abc 7. this viral photo of a dad who is a doctor touching hands with his young son through a glass door is sadly no longer possible. a tornado destroyed their home in arkansas. jared burkes had been staying away from his family for two weeks treating covid-19 patients. he was inside the home when this powerful tornado hit. thankfully he survived. six people were hurt but several other homes and businesses have been destroyed. a virtual campaign is helping bring smiles to seniors stuck inside amid the coronavirus outbreak. kids are making custom greeting cards for them while they stay home from school. it's part of the project "every letter is a virtual hug." they're sent to seniors living in the washington, d.c., area. organizers say this helps lift their spirits, knowing people are thinking about them. >> they can't have visitors so we're making them cards.

here is laf look at sfo, sun beginning to come up and very quiet on the runway there, as we know very few people are traveling or should be traveling during this shelter in place. major cities across the globe are dead quiet this morning, as well. here in mexico city, look at the streets, bars, gyms, churches and museums ordered closed, to slow the spread of coronavirus. mexico city is usually one of the most heavily trafficked areas and busiest largest cities in the world. gathers of more tan 50 people are banned. restaurants and other shops do remain open. mexico's president is resisting calls for more stringent quarantine. there are more than 700 cases and one dozen deaths in mexico. check out the scene across the pond in london. piccadilly circus was empty

another level one on our storm impact scale today, bringing you the scattered downpours towards 12:00/1:00, lingering in our east bay higher elevations and the south bay maybe towards 3:00 but we get some sun, slick roadways and looking at a dry several days into the last couple days of march, the first day of april. as we look out towards emeryville, you can see the cloud cover and the shower activity from live doppler 7. a couple waves of rain continue to move in to the coast, and a few showers up towards napa this morning, american canyon about to see some wet weather and we've had rain towards this is novato and westward as we go out towards point reyes. a little wet weather from i-80, down towards alameda, some showers out toward piedmont and go toward the san mateo bridge right over the heart of the bay, we're looking at the wet weather and some rain from south san francisco. burlingame 280 a little bit

damp. the south bay really not in the activity yet but could be a stray shower or sprinkle towards morgan hill, san will keep things damp throughout the midday hour. you can see wet pavement here, the tarmac, sfo, where temperatures in the city are in the low 50s. 54 across the bay in oakland. we are 50 in san jose, and half moon bay, and nobody there at the beach. we'll have a few showers in santa cruz, temperatures right now in the upper 40s from santa rosa, 48 by the delta. the golden gate bridge you can see a little bit of a breeze, the south wind ahead of the rain, and westerly winds behind it keeping the coast breezy today, looking at the morning scattered showers to downpours, then partly cloudy later on in the day, sunny and cool start to the week, although the north bay still could hold on to a shower come early tomorrow morning. let's time out the rain for you, and you'll see the yellows indicating some of those downpours. 9:00, a line of rain from the north bay, sonoma, down through

san francisco, the peninsula, all pushes east and will continue to see a few showers rotate through, right on through 2:00 and looking at the partly cloudy skies behind it. it is cool. rainfall amounts from a quarter inch for some of you to about a tenth to less than that and we are looking at numbers from the mid-50s, coastside with the westerly winds to about 60 and our warmest inland valleys. accuweather seven-day forecast showers north of the golden gate bridge tomorrow and partly cloudy for everyone just a few degrees warmer. we'll get to near average for the last day of march and first day of april, we've got about 70 inland and keep that trend going, a few high clouds by the later part of the week but overall pleasant with numbers slightly above average. giving us a break from the rain but not until later on this afternoon. liz? >> entering week three of the shelter in place. thanks, lisa. photographers around the world are beginning to emulate a san francisco family photographer. her striking photos of the

an east bay nonprofit is continuing its rehearsals for "high school musical" remotely. kids are getting ready on zoom for the show. ♪ so true, everybody now ♪ get up together, together, everyone ♪ >> these are cast members who range in age from 8 to 18, be a part of "i can do that theater" in danville. the group is now rehearsing online with 50 students for the show that's supposed to open in may. they put together this video of
