as you wake up, the coronavirus accounting for 2,000 deaths in the united states. thousands of tests without results in california means unknown infections are lurking. but one bay area company is having something to say about it. new technology bringing hospitals desperately needed supplies. good morning, it's sunday, march 29th. thank you for joining us. we have much to get to on the latest on the coronavirus outbreak. first, as usual, let's look at the forecast with lisa argen. >> good morning to you. we're looking at showers at live doppler 7 level one on our impact scale. and pinpointing activity, light rain through sonoma. heavier showers east of marin wood around black point. and a few showers along the coast. look what's offshore about to move into the sunset and across the golden gate bridge. scattered as we look out toward.

you can see what'se towards the santa cruz mountains. a few more hours like this. temperatures around 30. couple inches there, maybe two, three. this level one bringing anywhere from a .10th to a couple hundredth to quarter inch of rain. there's a look at the soggy roof camera. we have showers and by the afternoon, increasing sunshine. cool day. temperatures near 60. liz? >> thanks, lisa. we will begin with the rapid spread of coronavirus in the bay area. overnight the bay area topping more than at least 1,800 cases. now 46 deaths across the region. almost every bay area county confirmed new cases yesterday. santa clara county reported five deaths in a 24-hour span. that's the most in a single day since the outbreak started. we're also keeping an eye on cases for northern mendocino and lake counties. mendocino is reporting its third case, although good news, one person has recovered.

lake county reporting no cases. and they are getting technical equipment to fight the pandemic but this morning an oakland company is changing what they do. they're a 3d company learning to print much-needed medical supplies. but as lauren martinez explains, they're hitting a few snags. >> i never thought i would be sourcing medical supplies in an emergency. >> reporter: fathom is a 3d manufacturing and printing company in oakland. they're diverting their 3d printing ppe supplies. >> we reached out to our vendors in china to explore the need for making ppe for companies. >> reporter: then chinese vendors are sending out n95 masks and other supplies to the company but they're running into

restrictions. >> potentially need to pass emergency procedures to approve suppliers because this equipment exists out there, which is simply -- the dots are not connected between the manufacturers and the hospitals currently. >> reporter: peter allen is a program manager for vituity, a physician group that operates 140 emergency rooms in 17 states, 20 in the bay area. >> the hospital in the bay area was down to maybe a day left of masks at their site. fathom has rendered the masks and handed them off directly to our medical director. >> reporter: they're even working with other 3d printing companies to design a manufacturer 3d printing swab to fulfill the coronavirus test kit storage. >> how can we use that technology in a time of need to help our country? >> reporter: the program manager from vituity said there are different businesses that have supplies that will keep our front line doctors and nurses safe. dental offices, nail salons, construction and paint supply companies sometimes have a stock

companies sometimes have a stock of masks, gowns, face shields and gloves. reporting live in the newsroom, lauren martinez, abc7. and governor newsom is calling on silicon valley for their help it in making life-saving equipment. a company tapped to make new ventilators having no knowledge how to bliuild them a few days ago. >> reporter: governor gavin newsom led a round of applause for these tech workers putting in long hours which used to be a warehouse for bloomenergy a few days ago and now has become a pop-up assembly line for life-saving ventilaors. >> medica grade ventilators, medical grade oxygen. >> reporter: these balloons simulate lungs during testing. bloom energy is hoping to generate hundreds of ventilators to get them to hospital to treat coronavirus patients. the number of patients still

surging. >> reporter: just yesterday icu numbers went up 105% overnight in the state of california. >> reporter: the state secured 4,000 ventilators but may need at least 10,000. thousands will need new batteries. bloomenergy, which normally produces fuel cells, has stepped up to help. >> hopefully what we're doing here is to say we can do this. a week ago none of us knew anything about ventilators, other than we knew what it was being used for. >> reporter: but these workers are figuring it out and getting it done. san jose mayor san car low is impressed by the humanity. >> from what i have seen from all of the people working behind me to find whatever creative way they can to make things work. >> at the time o i think the only kwway we can do what w want to do is understand what the need is. >> reporter: governor newsom said other california companies are now pitching in during the

pandemic. >> that's the spirit of california. that's the spirit of this moment. take responsibility, take ownership. >> reporter: some of the refurbished ventilators will go to l.a. others will go to hospitals right here in the bay area. bloomenergy has a manufacturing plant back east. they are now doing the same thing. >> and many of you have been asking how you can help in this crisis. we have a full running list for what material you can donate to hospitals and you how as well as other ways to get involved. it's all at our website, abc7news.com. this morning a city is tightening the cry steeriteria tested for coronavirus. it was open to all people but now being limited to people with fiver more than 100 as well as coughing or shortness of breath. this is being held at huntwood avenue every day besides monday until supplies run out.

and it's not just toilet paper and cleaning supplies people are hoarding. americans are panic buying pet food. y ta shows sales are up more strong delivery company chewy is hiring 6,000 workers to keep up with the demand. new this morning, what about your morning o.j.? the value of orange juice is soaring as cram in more vitamin c to boost their immune system. one top grower said he's seen a jump in the past four weeks. but we should tell you there's no evidence vitamin c is directly effective against the coronavirus. it still goes great with breakfast though. and glad memorial church in san francisco is holding online services today. can you watch it on facebook li. services every sunday at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. they will do online celebrations until april 30th. several other churches also

welcome back. a local kaiser nurse helping treat coronavirus patients here in the bay area. she said she's scared nurses may be spreading the virus around. she's urging kaiser to keep medical staff safe, something countless medical workers are calling for across the country. here's abc news anchor eric thomas. >> it's been scary and really stressful. we're not really hearing or getting the leadership we need at the national level or really ever at the hospitals. >> reporter: amy scott sloevic is among nurses who really protested, saying they're in dire need of masks and personal

protective equipment, also known as ppe. >> when we ask for the ppe, we should be able to get a ppe that we need rather than get one mask and told you have to make it last for the entire shift and it has to go for -- even if you're taking care of some covid-19 and not covid-19 patients. >> reporter: he said kaiser changed his position and now allowing nurses to bring their own masks to work as long as they're not medical grade. but she says that doesn't provide enough protection from covid-19. >> we could be transmitting it by not having the right ppe, we feel like we're walking around apassing it to other rooms and that's not safe. we can't understand why they're so stingy with ppe. we're told on one hand, yes, we have enough for now but in case the surge gets worse, we need to hold back. >> reporter: nurses say a meeting is set for monday to discuss the situation with kaiser. >> we want to take care of our patients and be there and want to have conversations about how to do to safely. >> kaiser permanente said nurses can bring their own medical

grade protective masks to, would. kaiser said in a statement, quote, we're providing our staff with personal protective equipment in line with the guidance and authorities. we asked our staff when practical to reuse masks not soiled in line of cdc recommendations. they went on to say they're trying to follow all of the protocols we can. we know trying to find proper medical equipment for health care workers is a challenge throughout the country. if you have been using instacart for your food or delivery, you may feel effects tomorrow. workers are planning a nationwide one-day strike. they're planning improved equipment like masks, hazard pay and improved benefits as they work during this pandemic >> reporter: this morning employees for instacart preparing for a massive strike. the hired shoppers braving the supermarket crowds and risk of exposure to covid-19 so others can avoid leaving the house, now saying they too will stay home starting tomorrow if the company

doesn't offer more protections. >> basically i'm playing russian roulette every time i go out there, every time i shop, every time i comment into a grocery store. >> reporter: the in-store shoppers demanding the company provide hand sanitizers and disinfectants, hazard pay of $5 per order and expansion to the current sick pay policy. right now instacart says anyone diagnosed with covid-19 or placed into mandatory isolation or quarantine will get up to 14 days of pay. but employees like vanessa banefield, with limited access to testing, the company's policy doesn't go far enough. >> they designed it that way, to disqualify us if shoppers aren't healthy, if shoppers don't have meaningful access to sick pay, if shoppers aren't provided with necessary equipment to shop safely, customers are absolutely at risk. >> reporter: instacart telling abc news the health and safety of our entire community, shoppers, customers and employees is our first priority.

some who rely on the service finding ways to show their appreciation for the workers. this picture being tweeted of the glove, hand sanitizer and extra tips she left for her instacart shopper along with the heartfelt handwritten note. >> i just felt like i needed to do something who left whoever was delivering my groceries know that i see them, i hear them and i support them. >> reporter: narmarci gonzalez,c news, los angeles. major changes to public transportation in the bay area you should know about. b.a.r.t. had continue to close early at 9:00 p.m. with ridership down almost 95%. tomorrow uni metro and light rail will no longer run. caltrans will run even fewer trains. sin shelter in place, daily ticket sales are down 95%. the weekend service stays the same. and the coronavirus pandemic are forcing many plans to change for residents in the bay area and that includes couples who had weddings planned.

we folk to two couples affected by the coronavirus and what they plan to do next. >> this is the dress in here and these are the shoes. >> reporter: six days prior to their wedding day and it seems like meghan wedding dress will stay in her closet for now. >> we're basically in limbo. >> reporter: their city wedding from city hall canceled after the coronavirus cut into their date of april 3rd. >> we had our tuxes and venue to have dinner with our family. my cousin was going to do our flowers but the flower mart closed. everything is on hold. >> reporter: a statewide hold that didn't stop this san francisco couple. they are newlyweds in the mid-of a global pandemic. >> we got married last thursday. we got our marriage license about an hour before they closed city hall to get marriage licenses. >> reporter: the castles decided on the fast wedding, having in

mind toby, an australian citizen who would have to go back home. >> we gathered about three people on a tiny little beach in san francisco and it was wonderful. we were six feet apart, except for the kiss. >> reporter: in a statement the office of the city administrator said in part, those who wish to reschedule for an in-person ceremony will receive priority appointments to get married at city hall as soon as it's safe to do so. because in the midst of the uncertainty of this pandemic what these two couples do have in common is confidence in their love. >> one day i'm going to have that special moment. >> we knew that we loved each other and we want to be together. that was the most important thing. we'll figure out a party later. let's get a check of the weather. we're tracking rain today but a little nicer weather in the forecast, lisa, right in the. >> that's right. it could mean later today or week ahead. you have to stay tuned the next two, three minutes because we

are looking at the scattered shower activity through the morning hours. rai the one is seeing it but we next three, four hours. we have level one on our storm imbakkt scale. live doppler 7 displaying that quite nicely. you can see the rain continues to push in from the southwest moving north-northeast. as we go in closer to the north bay, it's light rain. highway 101, santa rosa, pen grove to the east around highway 12, and saint helena light showers. farther south pretty good rain from in vadio over the water here. look at this cell about to move across the golden gate into the financial district. you're looking at the wet weather. as we go into the east bay i. it's been a little quiet. you have had a few showers but not a whole lot going on right now as we go down the peninsula. scattered light activity in san mateo and south bay looking at quiet conditions. it's getting dark there. we saw a few peeks of sun and

heavier cells as we get through the santa c unins. in the sierra nevada, two,hr inches on the way. snowi at south lake, here's a at the lnh the cloud o, hal moon bay 54. in the low 50s here with rain on the way the next two, three hours in santa cruz. we're looking at light amounts for most of you. 53 by concord and delta 55. san jose, pretty clouds out there. we had rain earlier. more is on the way. scattered showers, partly cloudy later on today. we will look at the rain becoming more isolated as we get past 2:00, 3:00. in a sunny but cool start to the work week. one caveat, the north bay will hold on to clouds and light shower early on and things will brighten up. here's a look at the hour-by-hour forecast. you can see highway one, some of the downpours through late morning, all the way down

perhaps through the south bay and keep our rain with us as we go through 12:30 over to i-80. also as we head into the afternoon, mix of clouds and sun and becoming partly cloudy out there. rainfall amounts anywhere from maybe a couplectity wi be light and endingcoast, 60u and this is later in the afternoon, where we will drop level one on the storm impact scale. that's for the morning hours. the accuweather seven-day forecast, still cool tomorrow with clouds. and then brightens up for everyone, upper 50s to low 60s. we're getting to around average tuesday with more sunshine. looks like we're going to warm up for the first day of april and keep that modest warming trend going throughout the rest of the week. so certainly it will be nice to get some sun and have milder conditions out there. but always keeping our distance, right? >> keeping our distance, exactly. nice to get that sun.

to climb. tomorrow union metro and lightrail will no longer run. caltrans will cut service from 92 to 42 trains. b.a.r.t. keeps its closing at 9:00 p.m. vice president pence said the task force will be making recommendations to president trump whether to ease social distancing and reopen the economy. the president's announcement of a two-week period will end tomorrow. and the bay area topping at least 1,800 cases, now 46 deaths across the region. there are more than 4,600 confirmed cases in california and 120 deaths. every bay area county confirmed new cases yesterday. santa clara county reported five deaths in a 24-hour span, the most in a single day since this outbreak started. much more on the race against coronavirus at the moment. again, let's take a quick look at the weather. for those of you just joining us, here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning to you. showers and embedded heavier

downpours out there from the north bay and golden gate bridge from tiburon to sausalito. you can see the yellow moving to the north and east. it's wet in san francisco. here's where we are getting better rain, highwa 67 at sears point, american canyon should see that. lima looking at a little wet weather. also it's beginning to get a little more scattered as we go through the rest of the bay area. you can see down through the peninsula and east bay. not a whole lot going on. as we look at the coast right there, the santa cruz mountains, better cells and offshore you can see what is to come. we'll talk about the rain tapering off towards the afternoon hours. a little bit of sunshine and slow warming trend when we see you next. liz? >> thank you. an abrupt reversal from president trump who briefly floated the idea of imposing a quarantine on new york, new jersey and connecticut. that notion was met with a swift pushback from the governors of those states, after which the

president said he would instead issue a travel advisory. >> reporter: this morning new york city alone now has more than 30,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus. and more than 200 deaths in just the last 24 hours. president trump tweeting overnight a federally enforced quarantine of the region will not be negligence and is instead having the cdc issue a strong travel advisory, urging new york area residents to not travel domestically for at least 14 days. the decision coming hours after new york's governor hit back at a quarantine proposal floated by the president, raising fears the government would shut down major parts of the northeast. >> if you start walling off areas all across the country, it would just be totally bizarre, counterproductive, anti-american, anti-social. >> reporter: trump has said governors from states less affected by the virus asked him to look into a quarantine for the tri-state area. >> i don't believe it would be legal. i believe it would be illegal. i don't believe you can say you

cannot leave the state of new york. >> reporter: some states implementing stricter measures to prevent the spread of covid-19. florida, south carolina, texas, maryland and rhode island ordering visitors from new york to self-quarantine for 14 days. thsuhi even setngchecs o i-95ar looking for cars with new york plates. >> folks from new york present a different kind of danger to the people of rhode island. i know this is unusual. i know it's extreme. and i know some people don't agree with it. >> reporter: governor cuomo threatening to sue rhode island if they don't scale back the policy of tracking residents from the empire state. new york, the epicenter of the crisis, is still in need of medical supplies. in the midst of travel warnings and social distancing, the president traveling to virginia to send off the u.s. navy hospital ship as it sails to new

york city. but outside of nyo, pandemic hitting another grim milestone, claiming its youngest life yet in illinois. >> there has never before been a death associated with covid-19 in an infant. if you haven't been paying attention, maybe this is your wake-up call. >> reporter: illinois preparing to become one of the nation's next hot spots. the governor there fearing they won't be able to shore up supplies while competing against other states and the government for orders. >> for those who are at the bottom of the list, we may not see ventilators until potentially months after they peak in terms of their covid-19 patients in their hospitals. >> reporter: a dire warning in louisiana, covid-19 cases spreading fast after mardi gras. 3,000 people infected. hospitals full. the mayor of new orleans saying she was not encouraged encou the festivities.

instead administration officials publicly stated the virus was being contained. >> we were hearing from the federal government the virus was contained. >> reporter: a louisiana senator hoping one of the navy's floating ships can be sent there beaches closed. law enforcement taken to the sky to enforce restriction. governor newsom saying the golden state has received more ventilators from the national stockpile, but 170 of them are broken, and they're telling us they will be up and running soon. >> they may not be working but we're fixing them. >> house leader nancy pelosi had strong words for president trump this morning. she said his downplaying of the seriousness of the coronavirus ultimately cost american lives. ⌞> i hope that those who advise him, the scientists who advise him, will get him on the right track so that he's making decisions that are in favor of

ending this deadly pandemic rather than test whether he can quarantine a state or not as he had to reverse himself again yesterday. >> don't fiddle while people die, mr. president. . >> the speaker appeared on cnn's "state of the union" to talk about the federal government's response to covid-19. she said it's a tragedy officials do not know we do noto have enough testing. and people are having trouble getting back home, peru in particular. aaron rodgers counting himself one of the lucky ones. in the wake of the covid-19 outbreak has many travelers feeli feeling trapped, even nfl superstar aaron rodgers. >> there were some moments we were worried we would not get out. it was absolute pandemonium at the airport. >> reporter: the green bay packers quarterback telling a

as we get towards the santa cruz mountains. here's a like look outside as we look at emeryville, fog and clouds. e, nice we have a wide range of amounts here it's a level one system so anywhere from 1/100 to a quarter inch will get heavier downpour or third of an inch. we have slick roadways and will watch as it lingers throughout the early afternoon in parts of the east bay and south bay. the rest of you breaking out into sunshine for the second half of the day. headlights go into the north bay, where we had scattered showers from spring to santa rosa through sonoma and looking at heavier scattered showers as we get to american can canyon to get you can see more showers near richmond but the heavier cell back towards tiburon and here over the golden gate

looking at a good downpour in the city. as we widen east through the peninsula and south bay, not much happening. in fact, we have a little blue sky out there and you can see south from the santa cruz mountains, we have heavier cells but more is to come. we're looking at the light snow showers. couple inches in the mountains, temperatures below freezing. here's a look at the east bay where we have mostly cloudy conditions. notice it's not raining there now. low 50s san francisco, 53 san jose, half moon bay 55. the shar tank here with a little blue sky mixed in with cumulus clouds. we will be looking at the rain through about 2:00, 3:00 in parts of the south pay. 57 by the delta, 51 in livermore and in the mountains, a little snow falling. looks warm, doesn't it? like a wet snow but temperatures below freezing and picking up. just a bit of a dusting out there. tart partly cloudy later on today. some seeing the sunshine sooner

than others. starting with mostly cloudy skies for monday, chance of showers in the north bay. overall sunny week ahead with dry conditions and gradual warming trend. as we look at the 10:00 hour, still have downpours out there. takes us through the mid-afternoon. we will continue to see skies break out with the cloud cover throughout the bay area and lingering showers not out of the question by about 2:00. amounts, we talked about that earlier. they will be light for most of you. couple hundredths, maybe .2. and as we look at the highs today, it's a cool day. mid-50s at the coast with breezy wet winds later on. 60 in san jose and overnight lows dry, upper 40s to mid-40s with cooler locations around 50. accuweather seven-day forecast, notice the trend is for drier and slightly warmer conditions as we start the workweek. then get into april and it will feel a little warmer out there as highs rebound to the low 70s in our inband valley. i wouldn't say it's the end of the rain but for the next couple
