4:03 am
>> reporter: dr. anthony fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, saying the u.s. could see at least a million cases and potentially as many as 200,000 deaths. >> the number i gave out is, you know, based on modeling, and i think it's entirely conceivable that if we do not mitigate to the extent that we're trying to do, that you could reach that number. >> reporter: the president after considering a quarantine of new york, new jersey and connecticut tweeted it won't be necessary. instead, the cdc issuing a travel advisory to residents of the tristate area. and other states now implementing strict measures to stop the spread. texas announced a mandatory two-week self-quarantine for tr locations, and in florida long lines of traffic as check points are used to enforce quarantines for anyone traveling from virus hot zones. dr. deborah birx from the white house coronavirus task force, says they're studying new york closely.
4:04 am
>> what i wanted to be very clear on is every metro area should assume that they could have an outbreak equivalent to new york and do everything right now to prevent it. if they mitigate now, before they start seeing cases in the emergency room and in the hospital, once you see those, the virus has been spreading for days to weeks. >> reporter: good news for testing. the fda has authorized a new coronavirus test that can deliver results in as little as 15 minutes, and makers say they expect to deliver 50,000 tests per day starting next week. kenneth and mona, back to you. >> andrea, thank you. the virus is taking a toll on first responders. nearly 900 members of the new york city police department have tested positive for the coronavirus, and now a member of the city's fire department has died. 235 members of that department have tested positive. we turn now to president trump's new accusation about the lack of medical supplies. he's claiming some hospitals are hoarding and he's asking
4:05 am
reporters to investigate. >> reporter: with medical equipment becoming scarce at many hospitals, president trump is now accusing hospitals of hoarding ventilators. >> many of the states are stocked up. some of them don't admit it but they have -- we have sent just so much -- so many things to them and including ventilators. you know, there's a question as to hoarding of ventilators. some hospitals and independent hospitals and some hospital chains as we call them, they are holding ventilators. they don't want to let them up. we need them for certain areas where there's big problems. >> reporter: the president made the claim without providing evidence or naming facilities after meeting with several companies to discuss how they're ramping up production of medical supplies. later trump doubled down questioning the true reason behind the surge and demand for masks, especially in new york. >> it's a new york hospital. it's packed all the time. how do you go from 10 to 20 to 300,000? 10 to 20,000 masks to 300,000,
4:06 am
even though this is different. something's going on, and you ought to look into it as arths going? are they going out the back door? how do you go from 10,000 to 300,000 and we have that happening in numerous places, not to that extent. that was the highest number i've heard. that's the highest number you've seen i would imagine, right? but this man makes them and delivers them to a lot of hospitals. anybody and i think you were more surprised than i was when you saw that number, so thank you very much. i hope i didn't get any of your clients in trouble, but it could be that they are in trouble. so they have to look at that in new york. >> reporter: overnight new york mayor bill de blasio's office called the claim ludicrous, adding there's no hoarding or conspiracy going on here. just a simple fact, our doctors and nurses need masks. that's the sad, unchanging truth unless the federal government steps up and protects our front line workers. doctors and nurses across the

the pace of casualties. they never stop. as soon as you get the room wiped out, there's another one. >> meanwhile, detroit is now reporting new cases at a faster rate than new york. one study predicts michigan could run out of hospital space by april 8th. and there's new hope for medical workers facing a shortage of n95 respirators. an ohio company just got fda approval to sterilize up to e approval wasra in californ angeles convention center is being converted into a field hospital. the mayor reports a 16% increase in coronavirus cases in just the last 24 hours. and three workers at three different grocery stores in southern california have now tested positive. >> when everybody was saying, oh, my gosh, is l.a. the new new york just like new york was the new italy and italy was the new iran and iran is the new china, everywhere is the next everywhere. that's my point.
4:09 am
with this virus, no place will be immune. >> meanwhile, a u.s. navy hospital ship in los angeles has now treated its first patients. looking at the financial impact of this crisis, millions of people have already lost their jobs and now the government is making a new promise. abc's ines de la cuetara reports. relief for americans and their wallet is less than a month away. >> within three weeks we'll have direct deposit into people's convene federal government, that ca. >>eph need cash is expected to show up in your bank account just after the now postponed tax day. checks could be as much as $1200 per person plus $500 per child depending on your income. this comes as the white house weighs a new loan program focused on rehiring workers laid off during the crisis. the administration saying it hopes to begin handing out those small business loans this

in other news, many churches across the country are having virtual sunday services but some worshippers are defying orders to stay at home. a church in tampa triggered outrage after a live stream showed people packed inside standing shoulder-to-shoulder ignoring social distancing guidelines, and the pastor encouraged them to shake hands. a similar scene played out at a church near baton rouge. the pastor gave out hugs and said they're not going to be intimidated. a top doctor in china is urging all americans to wear face masks in public. he says they go a long way to protecting people, but other doctors have said only sick people should wear them, especially given the shortage. earlier i spoke with dr. mikhail varshavski to get his thoughts. i also asked when he thinks the social distancing guidelines will be lifted. >> it's a very difficult question. wh anthony fauci from the cdc coronavirus task force, and he basically discussed two stages

that they go through with the coronavirus pandemic like this. first is containment, which is where you find individual cases who test positive for coronavirus and you try to take them out of the general population to prevent that spread. however, we are way past containment in our current country, in our current state, and we're moving toward the phase of mitigation, which is figuring out how to lessen the blow of this virus both on our health care system as well as economically. >> dr. mike, it seemed early on that we thought young people weren't as effected as the elderly by the coronavirus. it seems here in the united states at least that young people are more affected. so i want to know, is that true that there is a significant amount of young people that are affected? and if so, why here more than china? >> we have to understand what group we're studying. when we get information off a cruise ship or from italy or china, that doesn't mean the exact same thing is going to happen here. we have a typically different population here. we have a population that is more obese, that has more underlying health conditions.
4:20 am
the advice remains the same. from others not only to protect yourself from getting sick but also to protect others. >> so just to touch on the point that you just did earlier, masking the masses isn't the solution? >> i don't think it's the solution. i think right now in the united states we have a shortage of these masks and we're not able to provide them for our health care providers. second, the general public doesn't know how to correctly use these masks. they take them off improperly. they potentially spread more viruses. there was some article saying, you know, people will be less likely to touch their face if they have a mask. i've seen the complete opposite in clinical practice, that patients are constantly adjusting them, touching the front of the mask which has all the virus on it and then making contact with their eyes. i think it's truly a recipe for disaster to say everyone should have them at this given time. in the future when we do more research, that's subject to change, but right now i don't think it's the smart play. >> dr. mike also says there is a very low possibility of someone being reinfected with the virus.
