on the verge of announcing additional measures to stop the spread here. helping others during the coronavirus. how workers at a local restaurant are thanking first responders right now. good morning, welcome to monday, march 30th. first thing we're going to do is check in with abc 7 news meteorologist mike nicco. he is tracking the forecast from his home studio. hi, mike. >> hi. thank you, reggie. thank you, jobina. hi, everybody. welcome to monday. look from live doppler 7 and what you're going to see looks pretty quiet. up in the northern parts of the state, there is a weak system that is going to glance us with a slight chance of some wet weather across the north bay. so, that's where you'll need an umbrella today while the rest of us will see a pmixture of sun ad clouds and upper 50s at the coast and low 60s for the rest of us. reggie, jobina. >> thank you, mike. now to the latest on the coronavirus pandemic. we may have to shelter in place for longer in order to flatten the curve. our media partner, bay area news

group, reports public health officials in bay area counties are planning to extend the shelter in place order to may 1st. the official announcement could be made some time this week. at last check, there were close to 2,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the bay area. 49 people have died. starting today in san francisco, muni is stopping light rail service and closed all of its subway stations and replaced trains with buses. this just in, a new opening date has been set for the tokyo summer olympics. the opening ceremony is expected to take place july 23rd next year. that's 2021. so, big news for that, reggie. and relief is coming here for health care workers on the front lines of covid-19. today governor newsom is expected to announce an initiative to boost the workforce. right now health care workers are working very long hours as we know. starting this week governor newsom is scheduled to take up an update on the pandemic and he will do this every day at noon

going forward. a second patient at laguna honda hospital has tested positive for coronavirus. that brings the total cases at that hospital to nine. seven of them are staff members. all those who test positive are in good condition. the department of public health says the hospital and its patients are under a quarantine order. don't expect the nation to recover any time soon. president trump says people should continue social distancing for at least another month. that u.s. now has more than 143,000 cases of coronavirus. more than 2,500 people have died. abc news reporter ines de la cuetara has more on the president's response from washington. >> good morning. withnation's top infectious disease expert warning the u.s. could see a million cases of covid-19, the president is now recommending people stay home for another month. after suggesting he could ease restrictions by easter, president trump announcing he is extending social distancing guidelines until april 30th.

>> nothing is worse than declaring victory before the victory is won. >> reporter: this as dr. anthony fauci warns the u.s. could get as many as 200,000 deaths and up to a million confirmed cases of covid-19. >> what we're trying to do is not let that happen. >> reporter: new york city is leading the nation in the number of confirmed cases and in california, the number of cases surging past 5,000. this as many hospitals around the country still face mask and ventilator shortages. >> i have nurses that call me on a daily basis to tell me that they're scared. >> reporter: but president trump seeming to blame the hospitals. >> 10 to 20,000 masks to 300,000 even though this is different. something's going on. where are the masks going? >> reporter: meanwhile, financial relief for americans is on the way. >> within three weeks, we'll

have direct deposit into people's accounts. >> those checks could be as much as $1,200 per person, plus $500 per child. the president predicts the country will be on its way to recovery by june. ines de la cuetara, abc news, washington. we're beginning to see the real statistics on how badly this pandemic is hurting the economy. the latest unemployment figure shows 3.3 million people have filed for unemployment since the outbreak began. the $2 trillion stimulus package president trump signed on friday promises to help everyday workers and small businesses, but those small businesses are still very worried. >> we were pretty much set up to have our biggest year ever in 2020 and now we're at $0 in gross receipts. >> we're going to need some forgiveness on some bills. it's going to take a lot of money for us to get running again. >> and what about those stimulus checks included in the relief package. the trump administration says they'll hit most americans bank

accounts within three weeks. we set up an easy way for you to see if you're getting money and how much. this calculator can figure it out with just three questions. you can find the resource on our website, abc7news.com. in san jose, santa clara county is depending on the fair grounds. right now operating a drive-through covid-19 testing center six days a week. exhibit hall and other buildings are being used to house homeless people who were staying in more cramped conditions at shelters. supervisor cindy chavez explained how a place designed to entertain and amuse can be vital. >> we're using it to save and protect families now by having opportunities to house homeless folks, by having opportunities to isolate people who need to be isolate. this is one of the assets we're using to make sure we're supporting our families. >> these trailers will soon provide a safe place for people

to live who are homeless, but still need to be quarantined. in san jose, moving to this. california state parks have started new measures to stop the spread of coronavirus. cars and other vehicles can no longer enter any of the parking lots there. so what they're telling you is to continue to work out and enjoy the outdoors, take a hike. just do it in your neighborhood. don't drive to these locations. and happening now. a local east bay restaurant is switching things up this morning. instead of serving regular customers, it's cooking up meals to deliver to local ambulance crews. amy hollyfield is live in concord where food is about to be dropped off. good morning, amy. >> we can't go to the restaurant, so they set up a mini crews to get a warm breakfast. we're here in concord they're grabbing coffee and a breakfast

sandwich or a burrito a family-owned business that opened 38 years ago. the family has always been community minded and realized they needed to feed front line workers during this pandemic. the cooks have been getting to work at 3:00 in the morning and then they head out and start feeding people around 5:00. we talked to one paramedic who told us they're all holding up okay during all of this, but say this gesture really helps. >> it's very sweet. it's very much appreciated. you know a stressful time for us and it's very nice of them to reach out and do this for us. >> we were the favorite breakfast spot in walnut creek and the doors would be packed on saturday and sunday and people would complain about that and love us. but now we can't have people in the restaurant so we'll come to the people who can take the food. >> the restaurant is taking donations to pay for this. the donations to pay for the food and pay the employees to keep them working. they have also fed hospitals.

a green screen and this south bay couple also has a green screen. they used photoshop to celebrate their anniversary. pat and ray burlleigh just celebrated 28 years of marriage. they travel a lot and planned trips to santa cruz and wanted to go to italy for pat's 70th birthday. the shelter in place made that not possible so they dressed up and grabbed some champagne and set up this green screen and they went places, sort of. >> ray used some photos we took during our vacations over the last five years and using photoshop, he took us on a virtual dream trip around the world to some of our favorite places. >> the couple says this is an anniversary they won't soon forget. as soon as they are able to travel, their first destination, europe. a pair of house mates in australia came up with some creative fitness hacks during the coronavirus shut down. the two girls from sydney posted these videos online showing them

doing fit to stay online. reggie running around san francisco and taking pictures. i love it. a look down in san jose. mostly cloudy sky and temperature of about 54 degrees. let's talk about what will happen as we move deeper into the forecast. partly sunny today and an umbrella mainly across the north bay. drier and brighter as we head from tomorrow through at least friday and an unsettled weekend as possible. a chance of showers. not enough for a storm impact scale. we'll keep an eye on it. temperatures in the upper 50s along the coast into the north bay. 60 to 64 degrees in other parts of the bay area. and then tonight you can see the clouds will hang around and so will temperatures in the mid-40s to even a 53 in oakland for the warm spot. so, you can see the direction of the jet stream. the storm track, if you will. those clouds that are coming at us. the thickest of the clouds will be across the north bay and that's where we a chance of a scattered showers. initially lake and mendocino counties and napa, northern marin county as we head into the

afternoon and early evening hours. overnight kind of quit and then tomorrow just a rogue shower as we still have that strong onshore breeze and most of us will see more sunshine tomorrow and we'll feel just a touch warmer. maybe a degree or two. here's a look at your potential rainfall. you can see it's just a couple hundredth of an inch of rain and not much and mainly, again, in the north bay. let's talk about the seven-day forecast. tomorrow is the last day of march and temperatures a lot like today after that. and then you can see april a little more sunshine and we try to reach the 60 to 70 degree range by friday. >> jobina and i were talking about how ginger zee has something special coming up today. we saw your instagram and you're going to be doing a workout. >> yes. get my stretch on. do a workout at 1:00 p.m. that is going to be on "gma's" instagram. i have the responsibility of

"new york times" reports that more people are buying baby chickens to start a flock. the aim is to collect the eggs when the chicks are fully grown. an iowa achry told "the times" it is sold out of chicks for the next month. buyers also say now that they have more time, why not raise chickens. chick sales have historically gone up during times of uncertainty. >> all right. costco is changing its hours at all u.s. stores starting today. abc 7 news was at the warehouse in san jose yesterday afternoon. starting today, warehouses will close at 6:30 on week days. gas stations will close at 7:00. weekend hours will remain the same. costco has set aside the 8:00 a.m. tuesday through thursday for members 60 and up or for people with physical impairment. can't find toilet paper in

"the chronicle" announce santa clara county and north bay county as it comes after president trump announced he was extending the social distancing guidelines for the nation until the end of april. the san francisco chamber of commerce is talking with all small business owners to prepare them. >> on one day, we had over $1 million in cancellations. it's basically our entire business. and all my life savings. and all my employees' jobs. >> now we're talking about how to get your business through a period of two to three months. how do you bring workers back and fastest way to brick cung

customers back to the door? >> we contacted governor newm is's office to see how this affects the current shelter in place guidelines and we have not yet received a response. new at 6:00, one of the leading experts on coronavirus is going in depth into president trump's decision to extend social distancing guidelines through the end of april. dr. anthony fauci spoke on "gma" this morning. >> to pull back the mitigation methods before you reach the peak and turn the corner, i think really would have nearly regenerated the spike to go up. so, we had some intensive conversations with him and we convinced him. he listened and we said the better part would be to extend them until the end of april when we think it would peak and start coming down. >> you can watch the full interview with dr. fauci coming up on "gma" that starts at 7:00 right after "abc 7 mornings." many are rely on grocery store delivery service to get your food.

instacart. workers are demanding more protections against coronavirus. abc 7 news reporter julian glover is live in fremont with more on this. julian? >> hey, good morning, reggie. really convenient for us. we open up an app and place an order and our groceries are delivered to us. someone is doing the shopping. but these gig workers who work for instacart are complaining these large crowds are making it dangerous for them to do their jobs and shopping in the stores. i want you to listen to the concerns of two instacart workers. >> every time i go out there i'm playing russian roulette. >> they don't have access to sick pay. the shoppers aren't provided with necessary equipment to shop safely. customers are absolutely at risk. >> so, what are the shoppers demanding from the san francisco-based instacart? they're looking for hand sanitizers, disinfectant wipes and hazard pay of $5 an order

and extended sick pay policy. now, if not, these workers plan to stay home today. the demand for instacart grocery service has absolutely boom in the middle of this pandemic. according to the associated press, 50,000 gig workers were hired last week alone for the company. now, with this strike planned for today, it is unclear if any of the orders that you placed at supermarkets like lucky where we're live from this morning will be fulfilled with so many of these instacart workers threatening to strike and stay home. i'm julian glover, abc 7 news. >> thank you, julian. happening now, muni is closing light rail and subway stations. service is suspended started this morning. muni buses will still run and act as a replacement on all muni metro lines. even with those buses, essential workers have to rethink how they get to work. we spoke to one man who still has to travel to his job as a house cleaner. >> i hope they have more buses on market street to get people

around better. hopefully this virus will pass in a couple weeks and get things back to normal. >> golden gate transit is suspending 12 more bus routes starting today. now down to a total of 60. in the south bay, vta is suspending its light rail service today replaced by a reduced schedule with no fare collection. cal train is making service reduction today and run even fewer trains. the daily schedule down to 42 trains a day. usually there are 92. since the shelter in place, daily ticket sales are down 95%. the number of coronavirus cases in the bay area continues to go up. right now there are 1,951 confirmed cases. 49 people have died. santa clara county still has the most. 175 cases and san mateo county reports 277 cases and six deaths.

alameda county has 270 confirmed cases and seven deaths. contra costa county has seen 175 cases and three people have died there. as you can see, there are fewer cases in the north bay. coronavirus has had even less of an impact so far if you go north of there. so, mendocino county four cases and lake county still reports zero. santa cruz county is reporting its first coronavirus death. the victim was a man in his 70s who had an underlying health condition. he worked in both santa cruz and santa clara counties. he was hospitalized on march 19th and died on saturday. the county has 44 cases so far. the santa cruz police chief has released a video with a warning to people violating the shelter in place order. >> we have extra patrols out there and a lot of police officers out there roaming the streets looking for people who are trying to take advantage of everybody else. we will find you. we will arrest you. we will prosecute you. >> the chief also reiterated to

only call 911 if it's a true emergency. the fda has issued an emergency reauthorization for a decade's old malaria drug used to treat covid-19. the drug company donated 1 million doses and bayer donated 1 million doses of chloquine. doctors will be able to provide the drugs as needed. the drugs have been championed by president trump, despite minimal evidence that they work. this morning, strong accusations from president trump as u.s. hospitals beg for more medical supplies. he's claiming that some hospitals are hoarding ventilators. the president didn't back up the claims. didn't provide evidence or name any particular facility. and later he doubled down on this questioning the true reason behind a surge in masks, especially new york. >> new york hospital is packed all the time. how do you go from 10 to 20 to 300,000. 10,000 to 20,000 masks to

overnight and the work by the dutch master is titled "spring garden" and taken from a museum east of amsterdam. closed for the time being due to the coronavirus. police are investigating the museum was showcasing master pieces with the ranks museum. the value of van gogh's spring garden piece is not known immediately. another cruise ship nightmare this morning. four people have died on a holland cruise ship heading towards florida and at least 189 people are suffering flu-like symptoms. nearly 2,000 passenges have been stranded at sea for more than two weeks. the ship embarked on a south american voyage on march 7. that was only six days before the u.s. asked all major cruise lines to suspend theircaptain is test kits. >> he didn't want to jeopardize the operation and have test kits on the ship.

they needed to serve the community during this time. they started a go fund me last tuesday to pay for meals and pay employees to keep them paid during all of this. they started making deliveries on thursday. so far they have made 500 meals for those who are helping in the fight against the coronavirus. >> because we have to push through. i know a lot of other restaurants have hit tough times like we have. but we've been feeding this community for 40 years. my mother and father started it in 1981 and we continue it today and now in the face of this adversity, we have to find out how to be useful to our community. >> today they will be donating 150 meals to ambulance drivers and paramedics. they have also fed hospital workers. wednesday they plan to feed the walnut creek police department. paramedics we talked to this morning say they're hanging in and okay through all of this but
