that will filter into our neighborhoods and take our temperatures down just a little bit today. san jose where it's clearer this morning about 49 degrees and 40 to 49 at 7:00. notice the mid up toer 50s at noon and a whole lot of sun mid 50s to low 60s as we head towards 4:00 and how about some low to mid-50s at 7:00. so, if you're going out for an evening stroll, make sure you take that coat. let's get over to jobina and find out what is going on with the commute. >> now, abc 7 news live desk update. >> a new shelter in place order is in effect for much of the bay area right now. here at the live desk, i'm breaking down those new restrictions that come along with it. health officials in seven bay area counties made the announcement yesterday. the extengdz for tsion for shel place orders until may 3rd. sonoma, marin, san francisco, san matoe and sonoma counties. so, playgrounds and dog parks are closed. ts, pools and

rock climbing walls are also closed. we spoke with people who are not happy about this. >> closing the dog park seems draconian. do we need to do that? you think when you're walking on a trail, how often do you get within six feet of people? >> i would support it, i'm not happy about it. >> i assume it's based on valid data. >> essential businesses like grocery stores can stay open, but they must have social distancing protocols. there are limits to how much you can buy of some items and you cannot bring reusable bags. also, most construction has been called off right now. and we're also learning right now that the shelter in place order was supposed to remain in place until april 7th. obviously, we'll have to stay at home much longer than we expected. back to you guys in the studio. >> all right, thanks so much, jobina. we are still several weeks away from the peak of the pandemic here in the u.s.

john hopkins university reports close to 190,000 confirmed cases in the u.s. more than 4,000 people have died. about 7,000 have recovered. yesterday the nation's leading expert on the virus admittd that up to 100,000 to 240,000 people could die by the time this is all over. >> is it going to be that much? i hope not. and i think the more we push on the mitigation, the less likelihood it would be that number. but as being realistic, we need to prepare ourselves that that is a possibility that that is what we will see. >> here in the bay area, there have been more than 2,400 confirmed cases and 63 deaths. cardenas market in san j is expected to reopen today. an employee tested for coronavirus. a lot of people are hearing about shortages of comm prescription drugs at pharmacies everything from antibiotics to blood pressure medications. new at 6:00, abc 7 special

correspondent dr. patel addresses the concerns. >> i'm hearing the same thing. both officially and off the record. so, we have all already heard a week ago reports of shortages of hydr hydroxy chlorquine and two that are game changers in this. hydroxychloroquine is in trials and i heard of people who take this for autoimmune disease and they can't fill their order because the pharmacies are out. >> there is also a shortage of albutterol inhalers. it's april 1st, so your rent and mortgage is due. that is pretty painful for so many of us. what do you do if you just lost your job? amy hollyfield is live in walnut creek with your options.

amy? >> hi, reggie. rent is due today if you can pay it. although, there are some city leaders who are having a press conference today calling for rent and mortgages to be canceled. now, right now, there is an eviction moratorium in place in california. and cities and counties also have their own moratoriums in place. so, look up your city specifically, but most, if not all, say if you can pay rent, you need to pay. if you can't, send a letter to your landlord. and make sure you have documentation showing that you lost your job because of this pandemic. paying rent for homes, also for business space has been very stressful for people during this crisis. >> my student loans are just a bunch of expenses catching up and it's hard when you don't have a job. >> now, two san francisco supervisors are hosting an online press conference today with leade t country like new

orleans, l.a. and new york. they are calling on state and federal legislators to cancel rent payments and impose a moratorium on morgue tgage paym during the coronavirus. we're still looking at being sheltered at home when may rent will be due. reporting live in walnut creek, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy thank you. just to continue on what amy is saying. if you cannot pay your rent, michael finny talked to the housing rights committee and the hotline received a record 75 calls in one day. most of those calls were from people who have no income right now. ma, do not ignore your landlord. instead, contact them as amy has been suggesting and work out a payment plan. >> our recommendation is basically that youte the landlord. write the landlord and let the landlord know what the situation is. i mean, it's really about all

temperatures a little bite and some neighborhoods and we have some low 40shi ofs are in the mid to upper 40s. ha vallejo and half moon bay, we have about 50 degrees. this first day of april will be breezy along the coast. 51 in san francisco and low 60s around the bay and low to mid-60s in our inland neighborhoods. couple of dry days ahead before the weekend rain is on the way. i'll show you the newest numbers coming up in the accuweather seven-day forecast. stay in place orders are longer. alameda, contra costa, marin, san mateo and santa clara all extending the order until may 3rd. this order comes with new restrictions. that means playgrounds are closed, dog parks are closed and other recreational areas closed. golf courses, tennis and

basketball courts, pools and rock walls are also no longer allowed. essential businesses can stay open, like grocery stores, but they have to develop a social distancing protocol. and funerals are now limited to ten people or fewer. and most construction is prohibited during the pandemic. >> those new orders came with a new plea from leaders in the south bay. please stay home and take fewer trips to the grocery store. abc 7 news reporter julian glover is live in fremont with more on this. julian? >> kumasi, good morning. it is a lot to take in. but yesterday we heard what we all suspected, we will be in this for much longer than we originally thought. these stricter social distancing guidelines are all in an effort to help slow the spread and buy our hospitals some time so they don't get overwhelmed by the growing number of coronavirus patients. here is an overview of what has changed here. additional public areas like playgrounds and dog parks are w here in central park in fremont.

most construction is banned, as well. all essential businesses that have been allowed to stay open must come up with guidelines to keep customers spread out in stores to maintain that social distance and they have until friday to figure that out. >> for every person who is in the hospital right now that can't be comforted by somebody else because it's too infectious and too dangerous. these are really painful times and we have families that are feeling this very deeply. >> a grim and difficult reality for so many and another new restriction underscoring how difficult these times are. funerals, we know so many are having tough times planning those. now being limited to just ten people. we've heard in recent days of many services being streamed online. again, we realize these are tough things to hear and have to talk about, but those leaders across the bay area, particularly those in the south bay we heard from yesterday stressing that this is our one and only shot to try and cut down on the spread of the so, we can keep these numbers

down and try and lessen the burden put on our hospitals across the bay area. reporting live in fremont this morning, i'm julian glover, abc 7 news. school campuses might be closed until the end of the school year and this is according to a letter that the state superintendent sent out yesterday. tony thurmond writes that due to the current safety concerns and needs for ongoing social distancing, it currently appears that our students will not be able to return to school campuses before the end of the year. it is not an order and san francisco unified school district said they have not made a decision to close through the academic year. yesterday sfusd passed out chrome books to help the students 4,000 students that don't have access to the electronic devices they need at home. oakland unified school district is still troubleshooting how to equip all of its students with devices and internet access. most bay area public schools have been closed since march 16th. this morning the number of coronavirus cases in the bay

area and santa cruz county has surpassed 2,400. santa clara county continues to have the most cases. they are getting very close to 900. two more people passed away from covid-19 in the south bay and that brings the total number of deaths there to 30. in the entire bay area, 64 people have died. alameda, san francisco and san mateo counties now all have more than 300 cases each. go north and you'll see mendocino county has reported four cases of coronavirus. lake county still reporting no cases. balloons and flowers have popped up outside the santa rosa police headquarters to honor an officer who died from covid-19. marylou armer had been with the frce for more than 20 years. she was 42 ye3 years old. eight santa rosa police officers tested positive for coronavirus. jobina. >> thank you. at the live desk i'm tracking the federal government's response to the pandemic. the trump administration tells all of us that we should prepare

for, quote, very tough two weeks. dr. anthony fauci warned yesterday that as many as 240,000 americans could die from covid-19. states are calling all the trump administration to do more while the administration says testing issues have been resolved. the states say that is not the case. >> so they are out. they are in the states. they are not being run and not utilized. >> that's just not true. i know they have taken some steps to create new tests, but they're not actually produced and distributed out to the state. >> new york governor andrew cuomo has begged the federal government for more ventilators, but he's having to compete with bids from other states like california and illinois despite calls for social distancing, some states still do not have restrictions. florida is only limiting activity in the southern part of the state and in mississippi, there is only one county with a shelter in place order there. back to you all in the studio. >> jobina, thank you.

many americans are wearing masks when they leave their homes and now the trump administration is considering whether that should be recommended for everyone. abc 7 special correspondent patel says that makes sense because some people may not know they're care s i carriers of the virus. >> if you're sick and coughing out droplets it will pass to someone else. how much you can protect yourself if someone else is sick and people are saying anything is better than nothing. here's the issue, if we just kind of have no guidelines and let people run out and get masks, we're concerned aboutt te supply for hospital workers. >> yeah, so, basically a cough mask or something that is not n95 grade is what the recommendation is by some. part of any guide lance that co be issued is steps on how to properly take them off after wearing them around other people. i want to take note that we do

have the dow up right now and when i say up, i really mean down because we are down 711 points and it looks like it's going to be another very rocky day for investors on wall street. >> thanks, reggie. california is seeing another jump in coronavirus cases. the state now has 8,553 confirmed cases. and that's from data from john hopkins, which is keeping count nationwide. the state says the number of patients in icu increased 10% in just one day yesterday. the economic fallout from the pandemic could leave san francisco with a shortfall of $1.7 billion. this is according to city leaders. their field assembly man jim fraser wants a suspension of bay area bridge tolls until the shelter at home is lifted. >> b.a.r.t. just said a new record for ridership loss. it's down 93%. fewer than 30,000 people road b.a.r.t. on monday.

let's take a look at your commute. look at the essential people going through the bay bridge toll plaza without stopping. it's going to be good. the commute is nothing weather wise to worry about. let's jump into the south bay where we have more cloud cover this morning than anywhere else. but it's going away faster today and that means we'll jump into the low 60s this afternoon. for the east bay valleys, no such cloud cover or at least not as thick if it's out there and that means faster warming because of the sunshine and from noon on low to mid 60s and for the peninsula, 47 this morning and up to near 60 during the afternoon hours and we'll have a little bit of a breeze shooting through the san bruno gap and that will hold your temperature down a little buiit compared to other people. this is what we're going to talk about rounds of rain and more than a half inch of rain. so, get outside the next couple days. i'll show you that coming up in the accuweather seven-day forecast. good morning, jobina. >> good morning, mike. thank you very much. hello, everyone.

so, a note for our essential workers here. you may have noticed that you are paying less at the pump. well, yes, that is true. let's get right to the story here. so, we have now learned that gas for the average price nationally for a gallon has dropped to under $2 for the first time in four years. and aaa expects prices to keep going down. california statewide average is now $3.04. not only because of the pandemic, a price war between saudi arabia and russia has pushed crude oil prices down. and look at how much prices have dropped locally. in san francisco down 40 cents this month to $3.17 per gallon. it's about the same drop in oakland, as well, where the average price has dropped to $3.09. and san jose could be the big, the first big city in the bay area to break through the $3 mark there.

us in the low to mid-40s with a clear sky. you can see a couple swirling storms out over the pacific and up around the illusion islands and those are still making their way towards us one saturday and one sunday. here's saturday and when it comes through and little longer in the duration of rain. starts as light rain in the morning and light to moderate in the afternoon hours. tapers overnight as we get between storms and the storm sunday is going to be a little bit stronger with some moderate showers and also with some cooler conditions and breezier conditions. but notice it doesn't last quite as long. in fact, as we head into monday, we'll have a few leftover showers and then drying conditions monday evening. rainfall as you would expect moving northwest to southeast. will leave most of its contents in the north bay with an inch to third of an inch in the south bay. temperatures very nice with the sunshine tomorrow and friday and look at that, mainly 50s to low 60s over the weekend. reggie, kumasi, have a great day. >> thanks, mike.

uber is pledging 10 million free rides as well as senior citizens and others in need because of the covid-19 outbreak. this is an expansion of the s oo and rides to first responders. walmart is making changes to keep people safe including checking workers' temperatures when coming to work. they will offer workers gloves and masks. walmart will create one-way aisles to encourage social distancing among shoppers and it will make regular announcements reminding people to back up. it won't say that. it will say keep a six-foot space between each uthper. >> backup works, too. this is so sad, "hamilton" officially ended its run in san francisco. it was scheduled to resume productions through may 31st, but "hamilton's" producer said they'll have to cancer tl those shows and now prohibits live
