residents continue to follow physical distancing orders, the state will face a shortage of 16,000 hospital beds. >> and california now nearing 10,000 confirmed total deaths. >> and the bay area has at least 2700 cases with 68 deaths. and santa clara county is the hot spot in our area, now nearing at least 1,000 cases. san francisco also jumpeding 10 just the past 24 hours. a lot happening. good evening. >> and thanks for joining us. so with that as backdrop, new shelter in place restrictions in effect for the first time today. the bay area extension now reaches may 3, earlier today london breed said there is a possibility that it may extend even further for the city. you are seeing what is off-limits as of today, no more

playgrounds, golf courses, tennis or back courts. and no more dog parks. some experts believe that the social distancing is helping stem the trajectory of the coronavirus. but the city's health director says that it is too early to know if that is the case. >> the extension and the expansion of the shelter in placed on, essential businesses like grocery stores and takeout restaurants are being told to implement social distancing protocols in a strict chris nguyen is live to explain. >> reporter: many businesses had already put measures in place to help reduce the spread, but the shelter in placed on now, you know, defines what businesses have to do in order to stay open with social distancing now mandatory. as the bay area shelters in place, essential businesses are community gathering points, a

any given time. >> the first week we had to do only takeout, things got a little backed up. >> reporter: but now down to a science, managers quickly adapting to the changes. >> as far as sales, we're not doing as we usually do, but i'll take whatever i can get and i'm grateful for all my customers that are supporting us. >> reporter: and customers express appreciation for those on the frontlines. >> some things might change for us, working at home and how we greet each other and we may see some social norms change on the other side of this. >> reporter: employees now taking it all day by day hoping to stay safe. >> it is reassuring that we're doing what we need to do to make sure that everyone stays safe that comes in our store. >> reporter: businesses now have until the end of the week to come up with a protocol if they haven't already, also if you haven't heard, when you go shopping, reusable bags are prohibiteded, so leave them at

home. i'm chris nguyen, abc 7 news. the new restrictions also mean instruction projects like this one in san francisco's design district could grind for a halt, that means tens of thousands of workers will be off the job for at least one month. eric thomas is live with how some projects are exempt. >> reporter: the scope of businesses involved in these new guidelines for safety is expanding, but the issue at the core of it remains the same, what constitutes essential and nonessential. >> use soap and water for at least 20 seconds. >> reporter: first in english and then in spanish. this workday started with a lecture to make sure that even on this construction project knew about covid-19 best safety practices. >> we are trying to for him the guidelines as they are being adjusted daily.for him the

>> reporter: so brown construction working on that bay point project is allowed to continue because it is affordable housing. and this project behind me, we saw them knock off about 3:00 this afternoon. but they were working before that. so enforcement of these guidelines about what project should continue and what should not, apparently is being left up to local municipalities even though the county health department has issued the order and they would rather use persuasion than actual enforcement action. that is probably true in the rest of the bay area counties as well. eric thomas, abc 7 news. and in just two days, 34,000 licensed health care professionals have signed with the state's covid-19 response part of governorgovernorso health corps. and one answering the call is a part-time emt worker and she spoke with melody woodrow in a

story you will see only on 7. >> reporter: allison crawford is a second generation first responder. her father a retired fire captain. two years ago crawford got certified as an emt. >> i remember when i told him, he was just over the moon. he is like you've always had this in you, you've always been someone who has run towards, you know, people in need. >> reporter: in addition to her full-time job, crawford typically works one 12 hour shift per week. >> a level of intensity and focus with my partners. >> reporter: she said they is definitely in contact with people suspected of having the virus. >> anytime swomeone has flu-lik symptoms, we treat them as if they had covid-19. >> reporter: and the she took video of something that you don't typically see. >> and one of the first things that we have a mask that is fitted specifically for us. and where they put a hood over

after a call for help. >> reporter: hospitals say they are using up 15 sets of protective devices as each patient arrives with a suspected case of covid-19. valley medical center says it has received 1.2 donated items as they propose for a surge. but the one thing they immediate more are face shields. that need has mobilized a small army of volunteers who have 3d printers. >> we have about 300 people signed up that are active at home sheltering in place and volunteering to print for us. >> reporter: at first they use a define created in the czech republic that was improved. >> they got us a few different prototypes and made adjustments based on the field back from our medical staff and on monday they sdifr delivered the first 500 units.
